Sara Sansone, Executive Director, also introduced the students to the various special population work teams that clean and perform maintenance and food service activities for Cape Coral. The next stop was Lifeline Family Center where Kathy Miller, President, and her team explained how they help young, single mothers become successful heads of households through education, discipline, respect, and responsibility. Students toured this 18,000 square foot facility’s nursery, study room, kitchen, stores, and living quarters. This faithbased organization does amazing things in our community

The Chamber of Commerce of Cape Coral could not provide this opportunity without the help of the Cape Coral Community Foundation, Jacque Lawson, and Michael Chatman. We also appreciate the financial support of Jones, Haber, & Rollings, PA and Prime Communication AT&T who donated the funds for the bus transportation. Lastly, we appreciate the participating service agencies for sharing their vision and mission with us as we help our youth be aware of the wonderful things happening in our community and the opportunities to serve their fellow men and women.

HEALTHY TRENDS Lending a Helping Hand Salvatore Lacagnina, D.O. Vice President of Health & Wellness, Lee Memorial Health System

Recently I had the honor of participating in a charity event for Gigi’s Playhouse which is a worldwide network of Down’s syndrome (DS) achievement centers helping individuals with DS to achieve all they can through free, results-driven programs for all ages, their families and communities. The charity event was a 10k (6.1) mile race which started at the beautiful downtown Centennial Park in Fort Myers. The route was across the Caloosahatchee Bridge, through a part of North Fort Myers and then back over the Edison Bridge with the race ending at Centennial Park. The race started at 8 am and I was in good shape until just before the one mile mark when my foot hit a divot in the road twisting my left ankle severely. I did all I could to stop myself from falling and was able to go on and finish the race with minimal pain. However, that did not last for long. Once the race ended, I started to feel more pain; and, by the time I drove home, the pain was so severe that I was unable to put weight on the ankle. At this point in the story you might be thinking -- what does this have to do with the title of the story and what does this have to do with health, which this article is supposed to be about? So, let me explain. First, Down’s syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 (normally there are only two copies of each chromosome). DS typically is associated with physical growth delays, characteristic facial features and a wide range of intellectual abilities. I know about

this health condition as much personally as professionally since my uncle, cousin and niece all have DS. What I can tell you from being around many other DS adults and children for many years is that they are the most loving, gentle and kind hearted people you can ever enjoy. I actually began my career in medicine because of a beautiful DS boy I worked with in NY named Andy. Many people will call individuals with DS handicapped, disabled or other terms but I believe they have tremendous abilities which enable them to lend a helping hand. When you encounter a person with DS they immediately remind you of what is important in life: kindness, gentleness, hugs and smiles. Initially, meeting a person with DS will brighten your mood and make your day better. Then getting to know them will teach you about this genetic disorder which affects them physically and intellectually, but despite these conditions they personally do not let it affect them. What this has taught me is that disability can often times be overcome. It is the mental fortitude that allows a soldier returning from the war missing a limb or suffering from the effects of head trauma to achieve more than he/she could ever have imagined. Disabled people many times become more able-bodied (physically, mentally and emotionally) and end up not only helping themselves, but also helping others. Personal injury or illness usually teaches us to become more sympathetic, empathetic and more helpful to those suffering from either a genetically inherited disorder or an acquired illness. During the few days after my ankle injury as I was hobbling around the house on crutches and understanding what life is like without full use of my legs, I thought more of how those with a similar but permanent disability deal with these challenges. You truly come to understand another when you are put in their shoes. This again is a reminder to me to look for every opportunity

to help others in need. Whether the individual is dealing with DS or loss of a limb, we all have the ability to lend a helping hand. When we do, we personally benefit from the help we give to others. Research has proved that volunteerism benefits the one who gives as much as the one who receives.

challenges but also starts to internalize what it might be like to have any of these challenges to deal with; and, then determines what they can do to make the life of another just a bit easier and happier. We are all on this earth to help one another and that is one of the goals of the thousands of professionals I have the pleasure of working with each day at Lee Health. It appears as if buyers can’t get enough of the lower priced units. There seems to be some resistance to higher prices here. Personally, I think the buying public are spoiled from the really low prices we had a few years ago; they haven’t adjusted to the simple reality that current prices here are still well below median prices in most of the cities they came from.

Isn’t this the time of year when we all reminisce about what happened during the past year? Some things were good, some not so good and some made us smile. The most remarkable thing is that we all made it through the year and we have the luxury of looking back and then looking forward. But For some strange reason, many visitors think that normal first, let’s take a look at where we are now to see if there is rules do not apply to them when they are here. The answers are simple. Ten years ago that loaf of bread in the market cost less than a dollar, now it costs $2.79; in ten more years it will probably cost $10.00 and the prices have not yet come down. Even in towns and cities, the pace of life is gentler here; people stop to chat in the streets, they are happy to give directions to tourists, they are glad you have come and they are sorry to see you go. Ireland has much to offer everyone. From storybook castles to magnificent gardens, wide open spaces to the bustle of international cities, breathtaking natural scenery to man made megalithic structures, Ireland opens her arms and welcomes you to explore her ancient sites, traverse her green fields and discover her treasures. The scenery is gorgeous, the weather is mild (though changeable), there is a rich cultural heritage to discover, and a wealth of music and stories to share. But the real joy of Ireland lies in the friendliness of the people, the warmth of their welcome, and the ease with which they make you feel at home.
