Each home has a dual bin system built into the kitchen layout to ensure that recyclable and nonrecyclable wastes are separated at source. Each house is also provided with a composting bin. Construction rubble is crushed and reused and waste separation is done on-site, decreasing the impact on landfills.

GARDEN Cities has a more than 100 yearold tradition of creating quality living environments that embody advanced planning and construction principles, and pay respect to their surroundings. The company has been responsible for 14 major suburbs in the Cape Peninsula and surrounds, with its newest project - the approximately 429-home Northridge Coastal Estate (NCE), a residential development in Sunningdale, on the western seaboard of Cape Town.
NCE has been designed to incorporate all the essentials of sustainable development that include: preserving the local biodiversity; planning for climate change; conserving energy, water and materials; enhancing community interaction and espousing smart city features.
It was awarded the first 4-star Green Star (Sustainable Precincts v1.1) by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA).
The estate has been shortlisted for the CIOB Big 5 Southern Africa Construction Impact Awards to be announced on June 27.
