Joan and Lee Reynolds 50th Anniversary

tually became the local landmark “Frontier Country”. It was also best known as “The Bird House” featuring an aviary of colorful exotic birds to view while dining on their full service menu, or dancing to a local band.

Joan and Lee worked together “16 hours a day, 7 days a week” according to Joan, eventually closing the doors for retirement just last year in February, 2010. “We were second only to Kwan’s in Salem, in continuous longevity in ordering from United Grocers,” said Lee. “Over 30 years in one place is quite an accomplishment.”

Now living in Mill City, the couple agrees they’re not going anywhere, except perhaps to travel a bit and finally see the state. “We went to Timberline Lodge for the first time just the other day,” said Lee. “It was beautiful.

And we’ve bought our plots up at Fairview on the hill!”

When asked the secret to a long and successful marriage, Joan offers one word—patience. “We couldn’t have done it without our kids,” she adds.

They are blessed with three children, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild, so far.

Joan and Lee Reynolds celebrated their Golden Anniversary this past Saturday, Jan 29 with the help of about 75 friends and family at Mountain Edge Café in Mill City.

The couple met while working in an aircraft factory in San Diego and began carpooling to work. Soon they started crossing the border regularly to go to bull fights in Tijuana with friends. From there, they recall, their love evolved.

Married January 25th, 1961 in San Diego, the Reynolds stayed in So. California raising their three children, Debbie, Jim, and Linda while Lee tended bar, and Joan worked for the Salk Institute.

In 1977 they came to Oregon on vacation to visit their good friends, Glen and Tammy Kent, and decided they had to stay. In 1978 they purchased the Frontier Inn in Reynolds Gates, which even-

Renovations Continue on Former Bank Building For the North Santiam Historical Society, renovating the recently purchased Mill City State Bank building on NE Wall St is a layer by layer process.

So far, they’ve uncovered two layers of ceiling—and have spotted at least one more that may have to come down.

They’ve also uncovered bridge -style rod and beam support systems, plenty of square nails and a Reddy Kilowatt sign.

The original building, built before the turn of the twentieth century, was three stories high and is believed to have housed the original railroad depot.

Now, it will be used for museum displays and Historical Society meetings.

3rd Annual SpringFest at Fresh to You Produce

The Stayton area local produce grower will be hosting their third annual SpringFest this coming Thursday, February 24 from 5pm-8pm.

The event will include speakers on topics such as how to choose garden seeds, drip irrigation systems, raised bed gardening and planting annuals, shrubs and trees. Wine and food will also be sampled.

“We’re going to celebrate spring fever,” said Fresh to You owner Nancy Hendricks, part of the fifth generation of farming in the Stayton area.

Husband and wife team Nancy and Carl Hendricks started Fresh to You Produce eleven years ago with one acre and an “honor box” stand at the end of their driveway. Now, they’ve grown into a full retail produce store that sells seasonally local fruits, berries and vegetables— much of it grown right on their ten acres.

“I want to show people that it’s easy to eat healthy,” said Nancy Hendricks.

1st-2nd Grade Recreation Association Basketball The Mill City/Gates Recreation Association organized an in-league game this past Jan 29 at Mill City Middle School for two of its 1st-2nd grade teams. “At this age, it’s just organized keep away,” said volunteer Michelle Meader. “If you can get them to bounce the ball, that’s fabulous.”

The revitalized non-profit organization serves kids from age four to 6th grade and has grown from one baseball team to 150 kids playing six different sports in just a year. They’ve been helped by local sponsors Hardwood Components, Kelly Lumber and Mill City Pharmacy and are looking for one more board member, volunteer coaches and always welcome new kids ($30, family discounts). Teen Movie Night At First Christian

Local teens and tweens now have a free, safe and positive place to spend their Thursday evenings thanks to the congregation of Mill City First Christian Church.

About 25 kids attended the event this past Jan 27, which included two movies (The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan and The Pacifier with Vin Diesel) plus an Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader Wii intermission.

Organized by Pastor Brian & wife Cindy Byers, Jeanne White and Lauretta Benjamin, the night also included free sodas and snacks, as well as questions about how the movies tied into Christian themes.

“The community needs more for these kids,” said Pastor Brian Byers. “Sometimes they're reluctant to leave—they just need a place to be.” Teen movie night is held every Thursday at 6pm and ends around 10:30pm on 3rd St in Mill City. River Report February 2, 2011 503-897-3301 The North Santiam was still flooded last week, and the drier weather is allowing the river to slowly drop back to more normal levels. Now, we need to scout all the channels between Packsaddle and the Willamette to make sure they are safe.

The projection from the Army Engineers is that a good fishing level will occur the morning of February 6. On that date and continuing until heavy rainfall happens, the North Santiam will be at 1,100 cubic feet per second flow at Packsaddle and the Mehama depth gauge should be a little over 3 feet.

Fish passage has been slow because of the poor river conditions, and the timing of the North Santiam fish runs is that they start the New Year slowly.

Detroit Lake is at a very low level now and the Engineers will fill the lake until it reaches the summer full level the first week of May. Rainfall will cause variances during this process. Some great river trips happen on the spur of the moment, but the odds are that well planned trips are the most successful.

But they’re going fast! This one night only, special event is presented in conjunction by Santiam Hearts to Arts and the Kroc Center Theater in Salem, February 9th at 7pm.

Director David Berrier explained, “We’ve never attempted something like this before. In mid-production at the Kroc Theater we’ll dismantle our entire set, load it onto trucks, then reassemble at the Santiam Auditorium in Mill City. We’ll then have to do it all over again, in reverse, to bring the play back to Salem that night.” He adds, “Our goal is to bring good theater to the Santiam Canyon, hopefully we will be back with each of our productions.”

“Sarah Plain and Tall” written by Patricia MacLachen and based on a true story in the author’s life, is a well loved children’s book and winner of the esteemed Newberry Medal.

General Admission: $6, children free with paid adult. Doors open at Santiam Auditorium on SW Evergreen in Mill City at 6:30pm. Two dollars of each ticket goes back to the local schools.

Salem Fisherman Presumed Dead in N. Santiam Troy J. "TJ" Topper, 46, of Salem lost his footing and slipped into the North Santiam River while fishing under the south end of the Gates bridge this past Jan 27.
