Deputies recover three sunken boats in two days High wakes and submerged rocks cause a trio of vessels to go under last weekend at Detroit Lake

It was a busy weekend for Marion County Sheriff’s Marine Deputies. They’re used to dealing with the normal weekend boating and recreational activities at Detroit Lake, but last weekend was more than unusual as they helped recover three sunken vessels from the lake floor. All of the boats had sunk, in part, by the high wakes of other boaters. One of the boats had also hit some submerged rocks earlier that day, according to officials. The first boat was found on Saturday afternoon, when deputies came upon the bow of a 14’ Hydroswift boat about 200 feet from shore, by Detroit Lake Campground. The bow was the only part of the boat visible above water. It belongs to Jason Henry, 34, of Timber, Oregon, who didn’t realize that his boat had a leak until he and two friends were out on the lake. Once off shore, it became obvious that there was a hole in the hull when the

bilge started filling with water. The high wakes from other boaters didn’t help the situation. It began sinking. Turns out, the hole was made by submerged rocks while the boat was tied to its moorage. It was towed to shore, with the help of other boaters. The next morning, deputies came across another submerged boat near Mongold Boat Dock. This one was an older 16’ model, made of Fiberglas. Witnesses said the boat had been tied to rocks near the boat ramp for several days. Wakes from passing boats apparently sunk it. The boat’s gas can and the motor cover were floating nearby. It was last registered in 2004 to a Salem resident and was recovered from the lake and is being stored at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office until its current owner is found. Later Sunday afternoon, deputies were called to the Hoover arm of the lake to assist

with another sunken boat. There, they found a 1989 17’ Anza boat completely submerged in about 20’ of water. The owner, Doug Keil, of Stayton, told deputies he’d secured the boat with ropes at the bow and stern while he and his granddaughter camped overnight. Wakes from passing boats apparently swamped the boat, sinking it. Using pulleys, cables and the Sheriff’s Marine boat, the deputies and off-duty Sublimity Fire Chief were able to raise the boat to the surface. It was ultimately towed to the dock.
