Santiam Canyon Jackknifed trailer Schools seek $200,000 stops traffic on snow covered pass

Members of the Santiam Canyon School district board met with the public last week in a school board session with a big issue to tackle, an ongoing $200,000 in deficit that exisits for this current school year. The goal is to reduce or eliminate this seemingly overwhelming number. An open discussion was held inviting the community to give their input, and many viable ideas were tossed about the room. With a number as great as that, there appeared to be not one easy answer, but perhaps a combination of answers. As we had already cut staff positioons and closed an entire school, the people in the audience started looking outside the box. (cont’d on page 7)

On Saturday, Jerry Korson and Liz Cutler, both of Gates, were travelling back from Bend when they came upon this semi-truck that had jackknifed on the ice and gotten stuck, completely stopping both lanes of traffic near milepost 60 on Hwy 22. According to Ms. Cutler, the driver was okay and it took just an hour to move the truck to the side of the road thanks to our friendly ODOT guys. The Canyon Weekly thanks Ms. Cutler and welcomes all local roaming reporters!

Firearm Federation to hold gun rights rally at state capital The Oregon Firearms Federation, the National Rifle Association and the Gun Owners of America are organizing a gun rights rally for this weekend at the State Capital Building in Salem, said event organizers. The “Guns Across America” Rally will be held on Saturday, January 19 from 10am-2pm. “Bring signs, family, and friends. We have strength in numbers,” said organizer Tom Tharp. This event is part of a nationwide rally day, anticipated to be held in 42 states on the same day, at the same

time, to support 2nd Amendment Rights and protest gun bans, restrictive laws, or magazine bans. “We have the Salem Capitol step reserved and are asking everyone to arrive and assemble on the front steps before noon,” said Tharp. “All political parties are being represented and this will be a respectful, peaceful, and well behaved gathering.” Participants are reminded that Salem is an Open Carry UNLOADED City unless you possess a concealed carry permit.
