School Board budget decisions create controversy Meeting scheduled May 2 to discuss impending $700,000 budget shortfall and cuts to facilities

Local parents have been concerned about upcoming budget decisions from the Santiam Canyon School District. So concerned, in fact, that the school district changed the date and location of the May 3 board meeting to allow for anticipated bigger crowds. At the same time, members of the school district board have been reaching out to parents to find out what they would prefer the district to do - in light of the impending $700,000 budget shortfall for next year, which will cause program, facility and staff cuts. So far, 12 school district staff have been notified that their jobs are in jeopardy for the 2012-13 school year, said Superintendent Brad Yates. The district is also considering closing one of their three campuses, although this remains uncertain, and if so, which campus should be closed. Interested parties should attend the Santiam Canyon

School Board meeting on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:30pm at the Mill City Middle School Multipurpose Room. *Please note change in day and location.* Proposed budget cuts at the last school district meeting, held April 23, left many unanswered questions. Cost saving measures, like closing a school campus and eliminating teacher positions, have yet to be decided on - they are merely considerations for the school board, said Superintendent Brad Yates. The district is facing a multitude of challenges and several factors are contributing to the financial crisis. Continued declining enrollment, reduced state funding, disappearance of stimulus funding, and overall increased costs of goods are part of the problem. The school district currently receives fewer dollars per student through state funding than they (cont’d on page 3)

Volunteers go door-to-door for Lyons fire bond Lyons resident Terry Sears (r) talks with volunteer Michael Rogers (l) about the upcoming fire equipment bond. Sears was an 8 year volunteer with Stayton fire. “I’ll help these boys any way I can.”

A group of Lyons volunteer firefighters gave up their Saturday morning last weekend to raise awareness about the upcoming $1.45 million fire equipment bond on the May 15 ballot. The Lyons Rural Fire Protection District has proposed the bond to replace four vehicles that are between two and three decades old. The current fleet compromises the safety of firefighters and the public, said Byron Brown of the People for the Lyons Rural Fire District (PLRFD). Volunteers Bob Bivans, Steve Walker, Michael Rogers, Ryan Orr and Byron Brown all went door-to-door last weekend - on their own time, and on behalf of PLRFD - to answer questions about Measure 22-114. “We want to make sure (the pub-

lic) knows as much as they can, so they can make an informed decision,” said volunteer Steve Walker. “I wish people wanted to know more.” The bond will cost the median Lyons homeowner under $16 a month ($7.90 per month for $100,000 of assessed property value) for the next ten years. It’s needed to purchase 3 vehicles for the district: a fire engine, a combination fire/rescue vehicle and a water transporting vehicle. So far, the district has received a positive response from the community, said Captain Bob Bivans. The People for the Lyons Rural Fire District will be holding 2 info sessions to answer questions on May 3 and May 10 from 7pm9pm at the Lyons Fire Hall meeting room. Info: 503-991-1035
