Officials: Bingham Complex Fire is now 45% contained

Detroit, OR – Seven fire crews are now working to construct a 10.9-mile contingency fire line that improves and connects existing roads, approximately ½ mile away from the Mt. Jefferson Wilderness area.

Depending on the terrain and fuels, building a contingency line involves using a combination of heavy equipment (dozer, masticator, chipper) and hand tools. One mile of dozer line has been completed. by Shannon Stinnett On Sunday, July 13, the Stayton Commanders Junior Baseball Organization clinched Midget American League State title with a win of their 7th and final game in the State Tournament at Williams Field in Corvallis. This group of ten 3rd-4th grade boys from Lyons, Stayton and Scio, coached by Brian Stinnett and Tim Manning, worked their way to this title by playing 42 games this season.

The tournament started with Lyons resident, Brandon Stinnett, hitting an in-the-park homerun. With a one game win the Commanders lost the second, sending them into the loser’s bracket.

There are still interior fuels that continue to burn and smolder, with occasional tree torching despite rainy weather. One crew is patrolling it.

Why Mill City needs a skate park...

The skatepark will be a place to go after school. For skaters, the skatepark provides a third place in their lives. For the most dedicated skaters, they will spend most of their free time at the park. The skatepark will have the amenities necessary for providing a comfortable place for its visitors, including secure places to drop a backpack, set a bottle of water, or

just sit and relax.

Neighborhood skateparks allow younger skaters to recreate safely close to home. As a matter of public safety, we prefer to have our children recreating close to home or in places that are safe in the public eye. That is why our skatepark should be near where the skaters live.

School district moves out of former Gates Elem., readies property for Upward Bound The former Gates Elementary School has been mostly emptied of district possessions and is now ready for the non-profit group Upward Bound to move in, said Santiam Canyon School District Superintendent Todd Miller.

It took nearly two weeks, and 15 staff and volunteers, to move items like classroom furniture, musical instruments and office supplies to their storage locations in Mill City.

“The buyers are eager to get the property ready for their use, which meant that we had to get our stuff out quickly,” said Miller.

The final move was a large task that happened over two days, said Miller. “There were some heavy and awkward items to move…. (like) a very heavy pottery kiln, 2 portable full size basketball hoops and several banks of large lockers. We also had to remove all of our grounds and maintenance supplies into Mill City.”

Upward Bound is a non-profit, Christian based recreational and educational camping program for persons over 12 years old with developmental disabilities.

The former Gates Elementary School property was purchased from the Santiam Canyon School District earlier this year and will be used to support those goals.

Detroit resident gets lost in Jefferson Wilderness Beacon device helped rescuers find Michael Smilenski quickly

Press Release - Last Friday, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received information from The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center that there was an activation from a Personal Locator Beacon near Mt. Jefferson. A Personal Locator Beacon is similar to locating devices which are used on aircraft, but for personal use.

The Center was able to find out the beacon was registered to 56 year old Michael Smilenski out of the Detroit, Oregon area.

Deputies received information from friends that Mr Smilenski left yesterday to hike up to Mt Jefferson but they did not know the trail he was taking.

Deputies attempted to locate Mr Smilenski’s vehicle and began activating Search and Rescue units from Marion County and Linn County. The sheriff’s office also requested a helicopter from the Oregon National Guard.

The National Guard activated staff and sent a helicopter into the area to locate Mr

Smilenski.

Mr Smilenski was located by the helicopter just after 10pm as he was flashing some kind of light to signal rescuers. The helicopter that located Mr Smilenski was not equipped to conduct a rescue operation and they requested an additional helicopter for the rescue.

Once the rescue helicopter was on scene overhead, they were able to use a hoist to lower down, load up Mr Smilenski and lift him up into the helicopter where he was flown to Salem and then taken by ambulance Salem Hospital for medical treatment. Mr Smilenski was hoisted into the rescue helicopter just before 2:30am.

Mr. Smilenski is an experienced hiker and had hiking equipment with him for the different conditions he might face. Information from Mr Smilenski indicates he fell approximately 100 feet and was unable to hike out on his own due to the injuries he sustained. The sheriff’s Office will not be releasing further details about his injuries.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank The Linn County Sheriff’s Office for the assistance of deputies and Search and Rescue Crews, The Oregon National Guard as well as Members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and

Rescue Teams. We would also like to thank the United States Air Force Rescue Coordination Center for the information and resources throughout this rescue mission .Smilenski had been skiing down Mount Jefferson regularly the past nine months. He had the training and the experience to safely enjoy Oregon’s second highest mountain.

But on Friday, a last-second, uncharacteristic route decision left him stranded along the tree line with a broken femur. And of all the equipment he had on him, he didn’t expect the personal locator beacon he had bought to calm his friends’ concerns would be the one to save his life. “I said, ‘I got this thing — I don’t want you guys to worry about me but know this,’” Smilenski said during a press conference Sunday at Salem Hospital.

Private firefighters partner with agencies to help extinguish the blazes throughout NW

Press Release Lyons, OR--As hundreds of acres are going up in smoke in the Western United States, a State of Emergency has been declared in Oregon and Washington.

National Wildfire Suppression Association member companies have been called up to provide fire resources to assist in the battles in the west.

As many as 4000 private firefighters and the equipment they can provide are on the lines now, and thousands more are trained and ready to respond when the call comes in.

Records show that in 2012 private industry could provide up to 4500 pieces of equipment and 11,000 firefighters on an as needed basis. “Our role is to supplement our agency partners resources when fires are

That can translate into an additional workforce of up to 12,000 trained firefighters along with all the equipment including heavy equipment, crews, water handling, faller modules and many other specialized pieces of equipment.

There are also challenges that face all firefighters on the line: long days on the line, sleeping on the hard ground, and days away from family. But the rewards are great— helping people, seeing their gratitude, getting the opportunity to see nature in a way most people don’t, and helping save our environment are some of the greatest benefits for those people that choose this profession.

not sufficient funds to provide any local law enforcement services. Marion County has curtailed its budget following a reduction in federal funding and will not provide any specific dedicated police coverage for the city of Detroit without a paid contract for said services.

If approved, the tax would apply to all properties within the city limits, and would generate $80,039 the first year, and rising incrementally (assuming a 3% increase in assessed value) to approximately $90,085 in fiscal year 2019-2020.

The cost of this levy to a taxpayer owning a home assessed at $150,000 would be $246 per year.

Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley announces the next Linn County Sheriff’s Office Citizens Academy will be held this fall starting September 9th and concluding on November 18th. The academy will be on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Sheriff Riley is excited to start the next installment of this valuable program. The academy will touch on all aspects of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office. Students will receive approximately 30 hours of training.

Applications for Citizens Academy can be located on the Linn Sheriff’s Office website (Linnsheriff.org) under volunteer programs. Applications will need to be returned by August 22nd.

Bingham Fire

(cont. from pg 1) the Wilderness is being put in place for long term management of the Lizard Fire, as it continues to burn in the Wilderness. A modified suppression strategy will provide the greatest safety and least amount of exposure to firefighters. A series of management action points (trigger points) have been identified to implement suppression actions if need to confine the fire to its current vicinity and protect values at risk such as private land, Hunts Cove, Marion Forks Fish Hatchery, and the drinking water source for Salem. The 10-person fire module assigned to the Lizard Fire is installing two cameras that will supplement other monitoring efforts for the rest of the summer.

The second of two remaining spike camps will be closing today with crews returning to the Bingham Complex Incident Command Post fire camp. Crews will require approximately three days to complete assigned segments of the contingency line. The Detroit Ranger District plans to construct the remaining 4.8 miles if needed at a future date.

Bridge update: Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center has installed a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Battle Ax Creek to restore access through Jawbone Flats deeper into the watershed. They are granting permission to the public to use this bridge for recreational purposes only at their own risk. Hike on!
