Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul. ~John Muir Tucked into a private corner of the Little North Fork of the Santiam there is a summer camp, Upward Bound, that has been introducing alter-abled people to the great outdoors for over 36 years. The camp looks like any typical summer camp with arts and crafts, a swimming hole and fishing, camp tents, fire pits, sing-alongs and a stage for talent shows. The camp counsellors sport nicknames such as Bug, Muskrat and Nurse Stitch, and grinning campers mill about in shorts and summer tans and with stories to share for the rest of the year. What’s different is that most of the space is wheelchair accessible and adaptive sporting equipment is plentiful. In 1978, Laura Pierce and two others founded Upward Bound Camp. Her husband Jerry joined them in 1980, volunteering for the year as a camp cook, motivated to serve by his experience working with war (Continued on page 12) orphans in Vietnam. Positive changes ahead for the view on Highway 22 OSCYC Grand Opening: Notice some BIG changes on the south side of the Highway near the flashing yellow light in Mehama? It’s been a year in the making: the Old School Community & Youth Center (OSCYC) will be celebrating their Grand Opening Saturday, August 30th, 12 noon to 4pm. Festivities include official flag raising, selfguided tour, classic family-friendly games, a lunch of hot dogs or pulled pork sandwiches
that starts at 1pm and plenty of musical presentations. The OSCYC mission is to be “a place for fun, instruction, conversation, and crossgenerational learning opportunities, “ said Colleen Gulstrom. To get there turn south at the Gingerbread House Restaurant on Hwy 22, then east on Emma St. “You’ll see a party going on!” Follow them on Facebook: The Old School Community and Youth Center
Clean up in Mill City near the US Bank: Tom Blaylock of Gates purchased 2 lots on the South side of Hwy 22 just west of the US Bank with the intention of business development. “We took out old sheds, scrub brush, piles of tires and loads and loads of old furniture from that site,” said Blaylock. The plan is for 50 mini storage units to be built and ready to rent out there by this fall. One set back Blaylock found was when planning in Mill City (cont on page 4)
