About noon on September 11, the Stayton Fire District responded to report of a manufactured home on fire in the 21200 block of Ferry Rd. in Mehama. The fire was accidental and caused by embers from a metal fire pit adjacent to the home, said officials. By the time that the first unit from the Stayton Fire District arrived, half the home was involved in flames and the fire was spreading quickly due to strong east winds. Restoration of BB River salmon runs continues
Last week we began talking about the return of the salmon to the Breitenbush River for the first time since the 1950’s. This week even more fish were trucked upstream from the Minto Fish Collecting Facility and released into the wild waters of the Breitenbush near the Hot Springs Community. According to Greg Grenbemer, manager of the Minto Facility, the goals are to release several hundred adult spawning salmon this season. The fish should set to spawning immediately, laying an approximate average of 4,500 eggs each. The adults will then die off naturally in the stream while their eggs mature. Of those eggs very few survive to adulthood. “The hopes are that 1% might find their way back here as adults,” said Grenbemer. Grenbemer has had a hand in the lives of each of these salmon, playing a significant role in their life cycle. Each of the adults released last week were spawned by his team at the Minto facility 4-5 years ago. Their eggs were trucked to the Marion Forks fish hatchery on the upper Santiam where they were hatched and then grew for 16 months. The adolescent fish were then taken back to Minto were they were released to begin their journey to the ocean. The word for the week is: Fecunidy--the measurement of how many eggs layed by each female, or the quality of being able to reproduce in great numbers. More next week on the fish restoration.
