The long warm late summer and early autumn days are ideal for hiking in the North Santiam Canyon. The area boasts an abundance of trails for all levels of hiking experience, many just a few miles from home. Mount Jefferson, the second tallest mountain in Oregon is the mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s also the treasure of locals. The Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area is home to over 150 lakes and 90 miles of trails. In the midst of all this is Jefferson Park, a stunning expanse of alpine meadow dotted with pristine lakes and crystal clear glacial streams .
The Nasty Fire near Nasty Rock in the Opal Creak Wilderness Area continues about 2-3 miles NW of Jaw Bone Flats involving approximately 8 acres. Rappellers , firefighters who rappel down from helicopters in impenetrable terrain, are camping out nearby to assure it remains contained. According to Paul Hiebert, Fire Management Officer for the Detroit Ranger District on the Willamette National Forest the rappellers will have to hike out. Paul said “We really appreciate the work done by the firefighters working on the aptly named “Nasty” fire. That country is incredibly steep and brushy; the rhododendrons are over 10’ high in places. Firefighters literally had to cut
One classic approach into the wilderness is the Whitewater trail. Here, you will gain 1800” in elevation on the 5.1 mile trek of mostly tree lined, gently sloping uphill path. Be sure to consult a guide book or map before setting out. From Detroit: take Hwy 22 ten miles east to Whitewater Rd (left), then 7+ miles to park. From the trailhead, the climb is steady and mostly shaded. At the 1.5 mile marker stay to the right and the slope evens out a bit and opens up to
a path to get their feet on the ground. They built over 2 miles of fire-line and now have the fire nearly out.” Meanwhile, another fire started by lightening continues to burn on Mother Lode Mountain in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness and several trails are closed to ensure public safety. The affected trails include: Bagby Trail # 544 from its beginning at Elk Lake to the intersection with the Marion/ Clackamas County line. Pansy Lake Trail # 551 form the Marion/Clackamas Line to the Mother Lode Trail # 558. Mother Lode Trail from the Pansy Lake Trail junction to the junction with Elk Lake Creek Trail # 559. The Elk Lake Creek Trail is closed in its entirety.
jaw dropping views of Mount Jefferson. A couple miles past at the Pacific Crest Trail marker stay left and the path will lead you over some of the dozens of tiny tributaries that feed the North Santiam River. As you approach the park the meadows become more expansive, and the wildflower show explodes in color. Once there the trails zig zag about, leading to sandy little lakes just begging to be swam in.Stay right along the north side of the mountain to a breathtaking array of blossoms. Highly recommended - Bug spray!
