The long warm late summer and early autumn days are ideal for hiking in the North Santiam Canyon. The area boasts an abundance of trails for all levels of hiking experience, many just a few miles from home.

Mount Jefferson, the second tallest mountain in Oregon is the mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. It’s also the treasure of locals.

The Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area is home to over 150 lakes and 90 miles of trails. In the midst of all this is Jefferson Park, a stunning expanse of alpine meadow dotted with pristine lakes and crystal clear glacial streams .

The Nasty Fire near Nasty Rock in the Opal Creak Wilderness Area continues about 2-3 miles NW of Jaw Bone Flats involving approximately 8 acres. Rappellers , firefighters who rappel down from helicopters in impenetrable terrain, are camping out nearby to assure it remains contained.

According to Paul Hiebert, Fire Management Officer for the Detroit Ranger District on the Willamette National Forest the rappellers will have to hike out.

Pansy Lake Trail # 551 form the Marion/Clackamas Line to the Mother Lode Trail # 558. Mother Lode Trail from the Pansy Lake Trail junction to the junction with Elk Lake Creek Trail # 559. The Elk Lake Creek Trail is closed in its entirety.

A couple miles past at the Pacific Crest Trail marker stay left and the path will lead you over some of the dozens of tiny tributaries that feed the North Santiam River.

As you approach the park the meadows become more expansive, and the wildflower show explodes in color. Once there the trails zig zag about, leading to sandy little lakes just begging to be swam in.Stay right along the north side of the mountain to a breathtaking array of blossoms.

Log truck side swipes pick-up/horse trailer

A log truck with a full load of logs veered off Highway 22 just west of the Breitenbush bridge at Detroit last Tuesday morning, sideswiped a pick-up pulling a loaded horse trailer, crashed through the guard rail, then spilled it’s entire load down the embankment to the lake, before finally being stopped by colliding with a tree.

Luckily no one was reported injured, including the horses. Both drivers of the vehicles were wearing their safety restraints.

Making the right choices for Fall planting

Fall in the Santiam Canyon is a great time for planting trees, shrubs and perennials, but which trees and shrubs to plant? The folks at Fresh to You Garden Center are here to help!

Try to think about year round interest in the garden. Choose trees with decorative bark, fall color or eye-catching silhouettes that will enhance your view of the winter sky.

Local dog trainer offers AKC S.T.A.R. puppy kindergarten

The American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. Puppy kindergarten is designed to get puppies and their owners off to a great start. Certified trainer and evaluator Linda Grace, owner of Social Graces Dog Training, will teach this positive, educational & fun class starting Sept 26.

S.T.A.R. stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsible owners.

Puppies will learn walking and greeting skills, how to come when called, sit, down, stay, to accept proper handling by owner and other persons and to react appropriately to distractions.

The puppy class will also include information on handler responsibilities, keeping dogs healthy, clean, active and

cared for properly.

Open to all dogs, mixed breeds and purebreds ages four months to one year and must be friendly/non-aggressive with current vaccination records.

Puppies who pass all of the 20 S.T.A.R. skills covered throughout the 8 week class may be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records.

Lyons Library summer reading program ends with International Ball Photos and story by Brenda Harris

Forty-one “International” readers completed the “One World, Many Stories” Summer Reading Program at the Lyons Public Library. 1,348 hours were reported by readers - in addition to the young and “old” who participated in the weekly programs. The International Ball had children sampling many delicious pastries from all over the world, in addition to playing games that have crossed countries and timelines. Crafts were made and a drawing was held, and the following children were the lucky winners of the themed bags. Aubrie Cross won the Cooking bag; Alexis Stinnett won the Summer bag; Cassidy Rook won the Games bag; Samantha Norris won the Reading bag; Gavin Groah won the Kids bag; Bethany Voth won the Movies bag; and Kassidy Schumacher won the Crafts bag. We had one lucky winner of a bike, provided by the Friends of the Family & Friends of Lyons Library. Morgan Fredricks is the lucky winner.

Children also shopped at the “World Market” using “book bucks” (hours) they earned by reading. Many wonderful items were available, and many thanks go out to those who donated.

Saturday afternoon, young guests were treated to an interactive treasure hunt that wound through the park, leading the adventures through map reading math equations to their goal of a buried cache, a chest full of school supplies.

“Ranger Dan and Khrystyl are phenomenal hosts,” exclaimed Vicky Henesy of Salem. “I’ve brought my family to this park every summer for the past thirteen years, and this last three with them have been the absolute best.”
