Detroit Lake holds classic cruise-in car rally Annual event also served as memorial for local car accident victim

Close to 60 classic vehicles graced the sidelines of Detroit Ave on September 17 at the Detroit Lake Cruise-In Car Rally. Organized the the Detroit Lake Recreation and Business Association, the event serves as a fundraiser for their annual fireworks events. It also gives locals and visitors a chance to network with other serious car owners. This year, it gave one family the opportunity to remember a life taken too early. Dannie Lee Park, the past owner of Detroit Market, was honored by his family and local residents at the Detroit Lake Cruise-In September 17. The local car enthusiast was recently killed in an auto accident on Hwy 22. In his memory, eleven family members organized a five-car entry at the show - and all wore t-shirts with a photo of Dan and

his 1966 Ford Galaxy Convertible. “We, as a family, decided that was what we wanted to do to honor dad,” said Shannon Waddle, Dan Park’s daughter. “It was something he loved to do...especially with my brothers. He was always there for me. We thought that would be a great way to spend the day.” Dan Park’s 1966 Ford Galaxy Convertible won first place in the convertible category, as well as took Best in Show - a category that is chosen by the car participants themselves. His son Bob Parks won first place in the muscle car division for his 1973 Challenger and daughter-in-law Jeannie Park took second place in the convertible division with her 1965 GTO.

The family was also presented with a plaque to honor Dan Park’s community dedication as former Detroit mayor and for his active citizenship. After the car show, the family met at a close friends house to remember him. Toni Park, Dan’s wife who was also involved in the car accident, is “doing well.” The family has set up a memorial Facebook page: Memorial Site for Dannie Lee Park

Top right: The family gathers in memory of Dannie Lee Park, who was killed in a car accident August 23. His 1966 Ford Galaxy Convertible (pictured) took Best in Show. Right: Kelly Kirkland brought her 1968 kelly green Dodge Charger from Bend for the event. Kirkland has spent the past seven years restoring the ‘68 440 block police interceptor after finding it in Burns, OR. Left: Jim and Melba Davidson of Detroit entered their 1965 Chevy Impala in the convertible category. They found the car in Stayton - it’s almost all original, with the exception of a rebuilt engine. “We like to come because it supports our local events like Fireworks Over the Lake,” said Melba Davidson.
