Upward Bound seeks to purchase former Gates Elementary School

Thirty three members of the graduating class of 2014 walked into the journey of adulthood Friday evening at Santiam Jr/Sr High Gym. The evening was highlighted by a video of snapshots of the graduates in different stages of their lives.

Teachers Bob Zauner and Jason Saari both gave their sage advice and inspiration freely to the listening students, one last time. Many local scholarships were awarded that night, with a large percentage of the grads

seeking post high school education.

Class president Sirafima Frolov announced the graduates as Superintendent Todd Miller and School Board Chair Richard Moore handed out the diplomas.

At the end of the evening the joyous new Santiam Alumnus threw their hats into the air to the cheers of crowd. Shortly after receiving their congratulations, they were off for the traditional senior skip party to the Oregon Coast.

The following letter from SCSD Superintendent Todd Miller outlines the plan: Dear Santiam Canyon Residents, I am pleased to announce that we have reached a tentative deal on the sale of the former Gates School property. This is wonderful news for the school district and the community.

The tentative deal is with the wellregarded local non-profit of Upward Bound. Upward Bound has big plans to reclaim this wonderful property to provide year round recreational and educational programs for persons with developmental disabilities, More information about Upward Bound and the future campus plans

Upward Bound has a thirty-five year history of providing quality accredited programs.

The Gates School property has been closed down for two years and it was vital to get someone in there soon.

Local matron explains why Mill City needs a skate park

Joanne Hebing of Mill City is a mother and a grandmother an active proponent of developing a skate park in Mill City.

Each week, Mrs. Hebing has been submitting reasons why she believes a skate park would be a good thing for any community.

The Mill City Skate Park Committee meets at least each month which are announced on their Facebook page: Mill City Skate Park Project: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/59714118193/ Skate parks can displace other less desirable activities in an area. Skaters love skateboarding. That’s what they’re into.

For the dedicated skater, any activity that disrupts their time skateboarding is going

to be a problem...and few obstacles will prevent the skater from pursuing it.

When skateparks are built in places where there are existing problems--criminal activity, vandalism, and so on--the skaters will serve to displace those people who prefer a remote, secluded environment.

The skatepark can be an attraction for family outings. It is increasingly common to see families skating together.

Often, a mother or father who skated in their youth has their interest rekindled when their children get into it. It’s a great way for a family to spend time together, without requiring a lot of planning, expense, or preparation.

The property has been a liability to the school district, with high maintenance costs and little or no use.

Over time, without an occupant, the property would have deteriorated more and become less desirable for possible buyers and for Gates community members. We also saw a wonderful opportunity to add a great community resource and partner.

Upward Bound has agreed to allow us to keep our school buses housed on the site for the next few years and continue to work with other local non-profits or other groups as a community partner. They are civic-minded and a great asset to our community.

In the coming weeks, we will be moving the last of our items from the Gates property into Mill City. The historic murals in the halls of Gates Elementary School will also be carefully moved to Mill City and put back up at Santiam Elementary

School.

Lots of work needs to be done and a work party is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26. If interested, please contact the district office at 503-897-2321 for details. We welcome all help!

Originally, the idea of selling the historic property was difficult to think about without some nostalgic remorse, but I have come to see that this is the best move for this property, our school district and the community. I am thrilled to see the property come back to life again and continue to offer great memories to all those who get the opportunity to enjoy it.

As the remaining paperwork is completed and plans are made, a new era is beginning in our area as opportunities are formed. I am thrilled to help make this happen and see their efforts succeed. So, please join me in welcoming our new community organization, Upward Bound, as they begin a new chapter in the work they do.

Community Chorus seeks new director

Group offers monthly stipend for talented organizer The Santiam Canyon Community Chorus, based in Mill City, is looking for a director to begin after July 1, 2014.

The Chorus is presently comprised of 11 women and 10 men, all experienced singers and has been in existence for 10 years.

The group performs throughout the Santiam Canyon and the Willamette Valley and rehearses September through June each year.

The Chorus Director is responsible for guiding the selection of music, coordinating performance details, directing one rehearsal and one sectional a week

and working with the Chorus Council.

The director and chorus have the support of Santiam Hearts to Arts, a 501c3 non-profit organization, which is offering the individual who will be contracted as the chorus director a small stipend of $350 a month for a probationary period of 6 months, renewable at $500 a month thereafter.

OSU: Early summer is prime time for planting fall and winter gardens

By Tiffany Woods at the OSU Extension Office Have you always wanted to harvest vegetables from your garden through the fall and into the winter? With a little extra planning and care, you can enjoy fresh vegetables from your garden most of the year.

Early to mid-summer is the time to plant seeds for a fall and winter garden, said Pat Patterson, a winter gardening expert and Master Gardener volunteer with the Oregon State University Extension Service.

Many cool-season crops such as broccoli, lettuce, spinach, chard, kale and carrots produce well in the fall and, in mild-winter areas of the Pacific Northwest, hold through the winter if protected.

“A good strategy is to plant these vegetables in mid- to late

summer after you harvest spring crops and as space is available,” advised Patterson. “To be successful, you need to plan ahead, choose varieties wisely and give proper care to your plants.”

Choose varieties that are suited to fall and winter harvest. Some are designated specifically for fall planting, while others perform well only in the spring.

Some good varietal selections for several vegetables appropriate for fall and winter gardens include: Beets: Winterkeeper, Albina Verdura, plant around July 15 Broccoli: Purple Sprouting, White Sprouting Late, Rudolph, plant in June through July Cabbage: Danish Ballhead, Excel, Gloria, Melissa, plant June or July. The Oregon State University Extension Service – Linn County is hosting a free summer garden program for children ages 8 – 11.

It is a fun, learning environment that incorporates garden-related games, activities and craft projects. Participants will also make delicious, healthy snacks using produce. Parents will be responsible for transportation.

Septic tank: Is danger lurking in your backyard?

A preventable tragedy, far from home, hits close to a former resident’s heart

By Karen Widmer Isaiah Orr was a typical seven year old boy. Happy go lucky, precocious and known in the neighborhood to hold a deep spiritual conviction.

On June 6 he was playing outside his home in rural southern Arizona, less that 30 feet from his front door, when he disappeared. He had fallen into a septic tank that service his mobile home park. It was covered only with a rotting piece of plywood that had been pushed to the side.

Isaiah died that day. His frantic mom found him after an elderly neighbor reported seeing him fall. By the time the rescue crew pulled him out it was essentially too late.

This story was brought to our attention by Dan and Khrystyl Best, former residents of Mill City and popular volunteer rangers at Fishermen’s Bend Park.

The Bests moved to Arizona last year, and lived nearby Isaiah’s family. Khrystyl is best friends with Isaiah’s mother, Beth, and was holding the little boy’s hand when he died.

“It’s such a horrible and preventable tragedy, Dan and I are really trying to get the word out that this is an unknown danger.

There are laws out there about septic tanks, but that doesn’t mean that people follow them,” said Khrystyl Best, voicing concern about her friends back home in Mill City.

Surprisingly accidents and

deaths related to falling into septic systems is not all that rare. A quick internet search brings up pages full of people and animals unwittingly taking their last step on earth in their own backyard.

These are events that happened in the past 10-15 years in urban, sub-urban and rural settings.

Many of the victims have been children as the fluid levels of the septic system are often higher than the child is tall.

The tragedies reach across the nation, and every local government has laws concerning safe capping of septic systems. The landowners of Isaiah’s trailer park reported the tank was deemed safe by an inspection in January.

Mill City previously was served exclusively by individual septic systems on each property. When the public septic system was installed the regulations stated that all septic systems no longer in use must be crushed and filled in.

However it is unclear if individual properties were inspected for compliance.

Other canyon communities remain on septic systems only.

Homeowners and renters alike are encouraged to thoroughly check their properties for any sign of an old septic that may not be sufficiently protected.

One popular way of covering old systems has been a decorative windmill or a garden bed.

Officals: The bag limit on trout has increased to five adipose fin-clipped fish in the Santiam River basin, and there is no restriction on the size of fish kept.

Flows have hardly changed at all since last week at the Mehama gague.

Fish can be found throughout the river, but are more concentrated in the lower sections, where new summer steelhead and spring Chinook are staging. Counts at Willamette Falls as of June 10 show over 23,000 spring Chinook and about 10,000 summer steelhead have entered the upper basin. Of those, about 3,000 spring Chinook and 1,300 summer steelhead have made it above Stayton on the North Santiam through June 14.

Warming water temperatures should make fish more active. When the ‘bite’ is on, bobbers and jigs are the preferred angling method with spoons, spinners and egg clusters also being effective. Currently the entire river

below the Minto Fish Facility is open to salmon and steelhead fishing.

River levels best for fishing are below 3,000 cfs at the Mehama gauge (currently the gauge is around 2040.)

CAUTION: The section between Shelburn and Green’s Bridge remains hazardous for boaters because of downed trees and multiple side channels. Better bets are the floats below Green’s Bridge and above Stayton.

UPDATE: The new boat slide at Upper Bennett Dam will be closed starting June 20 in order to perform routine maintenance on the dam. It is scheduled to re-open around Labor Day. Boaters can use the boat slide at Lower Bennett dam on the north channel around Green Island in order to reach the Stayton boat ramp.
