Detroit first in canyon to get electric vehicle charging station
As part of a statewide electric vehicle (EV) program, the Oregon Department of Transportation selected Detroit to host the Santiam Canyon’s first electric charging station. The new station is located on Detroit Avenue, across from Cedars Restaurant and Mountain High Grocery, on property owned
by Bob and David Layman. Construction of the EV station only took 2 days. “It went up really quickly,” said project liaison Lee Layman, who said that contractors approached her with the idea last year. The actual electric supply service won’t start for a few weeks, said Art James, Project Director of the Oregon Innovative Partnerships Program, a division of ODOT. It will start supplying power at the same time as a new station in Sisters becomes operational. The stations have a pay-at-the-pump feature, and two types of chargers that can serve two cars at a time: a 480 volt charger for allelectric vehicles (gives an 80% charge in 20-30 minutes) and a smaller Level II charger which gives a 240 volt charge similar to those used for dryers and refrigerators, and typically takes 45 minutes.
Oregon’s ban on self-service fueling does not extend to electric chargers, which motorists can operate themselves. The Detroit station was funded by a $2 million grant from the TIGER II program of the U.S. Department of Transportation, which was awarded to develop up to 20 EV fastcharging stations in Oregon. “Detroit is a good stepping stone for people coming out of the Willamette Valley,” said ODOT representative Art James. The majority of new cars are now scheduled to have electric plug-ins compatible with one of these types of chargers. Last month, one Southern Oregon charging station saw 124 customers - and by 2020, plug-in cars could account for as much as 20 percent of new vehicles sold in Oregon, according to ODOT.
Searchers find seven missing hikers It was an unlucky week for seven recreation enthusiasts in the Santiam Canyon. Two groups of hikers - three people near Elkhorn and four people near Detroit - were both lost, then found again, thanks to search and rescue groups. Jason Bisbee, 21, Dan Bisbee, 26, Dave Bisbee, 50, and Mark Hibdon, 21, all from the Salem/Keizer area, took a very long stroll Sunday from French Creek Road SE near Detroit - to where they were found in the Willamette National Forest near Dome Rock later that night. The hikers had texted a friend about 8pm, reporting they were lost. Oregon State Troopers found two of the hikers at 9:30pm and the other two hikers about 30 minutes later. Two days later, searchers were out again. This time, looking for a group of three missing hikers near Opal Creek.

Jack Thompson, the Mill City Middle School Principal who has worked in the Santiam Canyon School District since 2007, announced that he has accepted a position as principal of Melrose Elementary School in Roseburg for the 2013 school year. Thompson had received a letter from the Santiam Canyon School District Board on June 7, indicating that they were giving him “notice of layoff due to shortfalls in revenue experienced by the district.” The current proposed budget has eliminated the principal positions that serve Mill City Middle School and Gates Elementary. David Plotts, the principal of Santiam High school, will oversee the entire district as principal with back-up from a contracted superintendent from the LinnBenton Educational Service District when needed. Mill City Middle School staff Thompson’s attributes as a leader were praised, and the staff pleaded their case to reconsider the cut of his position in a letter dated May 29 to the Santiam Canyon School Board. It reads, in part: “Well defined rules and enforced consequences help children understand the cause and effect of their behavior. Security comes when fair, consistent leadership is offered. Students from (the Gates and Mill
City schools) will benefit from Jack’s calm, steady approach. He is well versed in communicating expectations to staff, as well as students and parents, which makes teaching environment more effective....in recent years, (Jack Thompson) helped create an atmosphere of inclusion. He has represented us well, kept us informed, and allowed for all to make building decisions.” “When we voiced concerns about needed improvements to the building or programs, he was quick to work the problem out - whether it was installing shelves, finding funds for new football helmets or individualizing learning settings for students,” the letter continued. “As you continue in the difficult decisions facing you, know that we feel very strongly about having a principal, and we know that Jack Thompson would be the best person for that position.” Thompson states, ”I am saddened by the budget issues that are taking place in this district, and the elimination of my position, yet I am looking forward to my next chapter in life in Roseburg. I have absolutely enjoyed working with the staff at both the elementary and middle schools, and am so very happy to know I have made some lifelong friends.” Thompson’s position with Mill City Middle School will end June 30, 2012.

USFS free fishing clinic at Detroit Lake
In partnership with Oregon Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Oregon Department of Fish and Widlife, the United States Forest Service, Detroit Ranger Distric hosted this year’s free fishing clinic at Hoover Campground on the south shore of Detroit Lake last weekend. Visitors had a great time despite cool temperatures in the mid to low 50’s and occasional rain showers. Activities included an aquatic invasive species round up, gyotaku fish art, visits from Smokey Bear, benthic macroinvertebrate identification (large bottom dwelling invertebrates), a traditional wood carving and net making demonstration by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, and, of course, lots of fishing. Take a Hike Exploring the canyon and beyond with Teri Ottosen to Breitenbush Gorge Trail #3366
This quiet trail winds through tall stands of timber next to the Breitenbush River. Over the years, storms have toppled trees which are cut away to allow easy trail access to this beautiful area. Spring runoff makes the trail soggy in some areas but it’s easy to maneuver around without getting your feet wet. The gorge itself is beautiful, but the real treasure here is Roaring Creek which flows across the trail and dumps into the Breitenbush River. Rest on the bench and enjoy the area before crossing the foot bridge to continue your hike. Getting There: Take Hwy 22 east to the town of Detroit. Turn left at the gas station onto Hwy 46 (Breitenbush Rd). 2012 Santiam High School Graduation The Class of 2012 graduation was held at Santiam High School gymnasium last week, where 34 seniors and a packed audience enjoyed speaker Nicole Scholz’s refreshingly educational biographies of Mother Teresa and Lance Armstrong and how they dealt with triumphs and struggles, and life before they became well known. Valedictorian Natazha Howard and Salutatorian Christine Morreira, both co-ASB presidents, hosted as Rick Posekany handed out diplomas. Wanda L. Hatt
October 23, 1934 – May 25, 2012 Lyons – Wanda, 77, died May 25 in Stayton. She was born in Chickasha, OK. Wanda was a wonderful seamstress and made beautiful dolls, and was a great cook. She was a member of the Coast Guard Auxillary. Wanda married William “Bill” Hatt on February 3, 1971 in Las Vegas, NV. , he preceded her on February 6, 2006. She was the “Mayor’s Wife”, at the time her husband Bill died, he was serving as the Mayor of Lyons. Wanda is survived by children: James Estes of Las Vegas, NV., Bonnie Owens of Turlock,
CA., Dewayne Hatt of Austin, TX., and Dawn Ellen Hatt of Lyons; brothers: Tairl Parks of Pollock Pines, CA., Tex Parks of Sacramento, CA., and Ricky Parks of Cottonwood, CA.; sisters: Jo Ann Whittaker of Oklahoma City, OK., Imojene Rand of Beatty, CA., and Lois McKenzie of Oklahoma City, OK.; 7 – grandchildren and 5 – great –grandchildren. Lyons Library starts summer reading program

Hey all you Aliens, Astronauts, and Night Owls, fly on over to the Lyons Public Library for the Dream Big-Read Summer Reading Program. This year’s program starts June 14 and runs through August 9, with engaging, educational and interactive fun for everyone. Periodical Postage The location is either the Lyons City Park or the Lyons City Council Paid Meeting Room (old Library) at Cedar and 5th Streets; are on every Thursday at 3pm; and are FREE to all!
