Mt. Edge Cafe welcomes new owners

Mary and Dale Kirsch had been ready to retire from the restaurant business for quite some time. They held the position of landlord for many years at 320 NW Santiam Blvd. and leased it out to a series of entrepreneurs who developed it into the popular Mill City breakfast spot.

In recent years, by default, the Kirsches became restaurateurs themselves after prospective buyers found the task of taking over too daunting.

Now, much in thanks to their daughter Cindy (Kirsch) Zosel, Mt. Edge has a new adoptive family, Lanora and Tony Dienstel of Vancouver.

Zosel really wanted to see her parents enjoy their retirement years, not work cradle to grave. So she took it upon herself to search for prospective buyers of her parents’ restaurant via a Facebook last May posting photos and pleading, “Help my nearly 80 year old parents retire!”

Lanora Dienstel saw that post. Her and Zosel were acquaintances as their children belonged to the same marching band. Lanora, a nurse, talked it over with Tony, a Western Culinary Institute trained chef, and before long

they were on the phone with the Kirsches.

Both Tony and Lanora are not strangers to the North Santiam Canyon. Tony has been camping out at Fisherman’s Bend with his family every year since he was 4, and Lanora frequented family property at Taylor Park.

The Dienstels purchased a home in Mill City in February. In March they started training with the staff at Mt. Edge, and now in April, they are full fledged restaurant owners, and ready to serve.

“Our plan is to basically keep the old menu with a few change, mostly additions,” said Tony, “Such as build your own homemade mac-n-cheese where you choose add-ons such as jalapenos or bacon. Plus we’ll have rice bowls with your choice of meat and veggie toppings, and barbecue and fresh fruit milk shakes in the summer.”

On the day of my visit I was tempted by the Banana’s Foster French Toast listed on the specials board!

Future plans also include extended summer hours and Friday and Saturday night dinners. They will continue to host special events such as the Lions Club meetings, and they welcome more. Current hours are

6am to 2pm, 7 days a week, featuring daily specials, homemade soups, and of course, breakfast will be served all day.

Record number of kids participate in childrens theatre

Again, without a hitch, the MCT pulled off the amazing feat of taking a group of average school kids with little or no acting experience, trained them for less than a week, put them on stage and created a most enjoyable theater experience.

Dear Readers, I’d like to thank all of our readers and advertisers for their patience and understanding these past several months. I had taken on the role of caregiver for my mother during the last year of her life.

This, of course, distracted me from keeping up with the day to day chores of the newspaper business. Typos became more prevalent, events were often missed, and the billing and subscriptions became a bit of a mess. Yet, over all, I found, as usual, a huge amount of support and understanding from our beautiful community.

Lyons Fire recognizes crew Firefighter of the Year, Support Team Member of the Year among those who were recognized at March 15th ceremony

The Lyons Fire District held their annual Firemen’s Banquet on March 15 at Spirit Mountain, said event organizers.

Several members who came wore bow ties, in memory of Dustin Campbell, a team member who passed away.

Awards were presented as follows: Support Team Member of the Year: Melony Raines, Firefighter of the Year: Michael Rogers, Outstanding Firefighter of the Year: Matt Bentz, Officer of the Year: Bob Bivans, Chief’s Award (for going above and beyond): Kira Grover, Jason Hall and Michael Rogers.

The award for the Most Calls went to Adam Wilson, and the award for the Most Drills went to Bob Johnston.

The Santiam High School Grad Night committee hosted another hilarious year of Donkey Basketball last week, raising $1137 for their annual student event in Lincoln City.

The Championship game was between the BuhDonkeyDonks (winners) and the Thinking Troubled Donkey Riding Machines.

Deadline for health ins. extended to Oregonians now have an additional month to apply for private health insurance, according to the state developed registration website at Cover Oregon.

The new deadline to apply is April 30. The Oregon Insurance Division and Cover Oregon “urges people to apply now to get coverage as soon as possible and avoid potential end-ofmonth rush.”

Starting in 2014, everyone must have the minimum coverage as allowed by law, or pay a federal tax penalty, unless they have a recognized reason why they shouldn’t have to pay.

Some recognized reasons include being incarcerated or a non-citizen. Low income families and members of a recognized tribe are exempt. Religious reasons also qualify.

Here is a list of some common questions about the process and the extended deadline: What is Oregon’s extended application period?

Oregon will be opening an extended application period that allows Oregonians to apply for private individual health insurance through Cover Oregon and directly with insurance companies through April 30, 2014.

Is this just for people who want to apply through Cover Oregon?

No, this applies to any individual who wants to buy health insurance in 2014, including those who want to buy coverage directly from an insurance company.

What if people do not apply

by April 30?

If you do not apply by April 30, you will have to wait until the next open enrollment period and you could be subject to a federal penalty. The start of the next open enrollment period is Nov. 15, 2014, and the soonest coverage could start is January 1, 2015. The only exception is if you experience certain quali6

fying events, such as becoming a parent or a change in your marital status, in which case you may be able to enroll later in 2014.

How much is the federal penalty?

The federal penalty for not having health insurance in 2014 is either 1 percent of your family household income, or a maximum $95 per person ($47.50 per child under 18), whichever is greater (note: penalty is calculated on number of months uninsured and is prorated). The penalty amount increases every year until 2016 when it reaches $695/per adult, or 2.5 percent of income. From then it will be adjusted by inflation (there is an overall cap each year). In

essence, the options for each month are (1) get insurance, (2) claim an exemption or (3) pay the penalty. There are hardship exemptions for the penalty and those can be found at www. coveroregon.com/learn-more/ exemptions.

How does this differ from the federal extension that was announced recently?

The federal announcement was for states that use healthcare. gov. States with state-based marketplaces, like Oregon, are able to take their own approaches to reflect their unique markets and circumstances.

I have been waiting to hear from Cover Oregon because I already submitted an application. Will my application get processed in time for me to avoid a federal penalty?

If you have already submitted your application and you enroll in coverage through Cover Oregon, you will not be subject to a potential federal penalty.

I enrolled in a plan directly with an insurance company before April 1. Will I have to pay a federal penalty?

No. If you enrolled in a plan directly with an insurance company on or before March 31, you will not be subject to a federal penalty. If you wait to buy coverage directly from an insurance company between April 1 and April 30, you may have to pay a partial federal penalty.

I have filled out an application and am eligible for a private plan, but have not yet selected a plan. What’s the last day to enroll?

Once people have applied by April 30 and then qualified for private coverage through Cover Oregon, they will have a reasonable period of time to enroll. The final enrollment date has not yet been set.

What is the difference between applying and enrolling?

Exemptions for religious reasons and members of Indian Tribes are ongoing, meaning the people who receive these exemptions are not required to annually renew the exemption. However, if a person under the age of 21 is granted a religious conscience exemption, he or she must submit a new application for an exemption upon reaching the age of 21. The duration of hardship exemptions varies based on individual circumstances. Exemptions for being incarcerated and for being a member of a health care sharing ministry apply only for months when the individual was actually incarcerated or actually a member of the health care sharing ministry. All other exemptions are good for the calendar year in which an applicant submitted an application for such exemption.

Santiam High students awarded free tuition at Chemeketa

Gates Fire Easter Egg Hunt

The public is invited to join the Gates Fire Department at their annual Easter Egg Hunt at Gates Elementary School at 40151 Gates School Rd. on Easter Sunday (April 20) at 1pm. There will 6 different age groups: 0 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, 7 to 8, 9 to 10, and 11 to 12, and the Easter Bunny will be there.

Three Santiam High School students were selected for a free two year college tuition program at Chemeketa Community College: Alisha Clark, Sirafima Frolov and Bailey Tank.

For the 2014-15 academic year, 512 high school students were selected for the Chemeketa Scholars program.

“That is more than we've ever had,” said James McNicholas, the Public Information representative for Chemeketa Community College. This two-year scholarship has an approximate maximum value of $10,000 and average value of $7,500.

Chemeketa Scholars receive a full tuition scholarship for up to two years in any field of study, including technical programs. It’s awarded to applicants who earn a cumulative, unweighted GPA of 3.5 or better (as of first semester/quarter grades of final year in high school), earn minimum COMPASS placement test scores of 80 in reading, 75 in writing and placement into Math 095 or higher, on track to earn a regular high school diploma, and enroll full-time (12-18 credits) at Chemeketa the fall that immediately follows high school graduation. Other requirements apply to home schooled and military students.

The property is located behind 264 NW 5th Avenue and will be accessed via a 25’ wide driveway easement from NW 5th Avenue.

The mini-storage units will abut Hwy 22 but will not have driveway access to Hwy 22. Ministorage units are a permitted use in the Highway Commercial (CH) zone but must comply with the site plan review criteria for commercial buildings. The Mill City Zoning Code requires submittal of a site plan for any new commercial building in the CH zone to the Planning Commission for review and approval before a building permit may be issued. Marion County Assessor’s Map T09S R3E Section 30DA, Tax Lot 02701.

The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 during the regularly scheduled planning commission meeting at the City Hall, 444 S. First Avenue, 10

Volunteers needed for 13th annual Breitenbush Wildlife Habitat Restoration Project

Want to help improve and restore the land they need to survive? The Willamette National Forest, and several of its partners, hope you will join us on Saturday, May 3 in the Breitenbush and North Santiam watersheds. Organizers would like to have 75 volunteers help remove noxious weeds, fertilize, seed, prune, and collect litter.

The project is part of a longterm effort to create and improve food sources for big game species, such as elk, deer and bear that live in the Breitenbush River area. Big game benefits from the increased production of berries and tender leaves found in young forest stands.

Window Fall Safety Week: April 6-12

The Mill City Volunteer Firemen would like to remind every one that every year 40 to 50 children fall from windows in Oregon.

Windows play a vital role in home safety, serving as a secondary escape route in the event of a fire or other emergency, but they can also pose a risk for a fall if safety measures are not followed.

National Window Fall Safety Week is designed to increase awareness of what parents and caregivers can do to help keep their home and family safer from the risk of accidental falls from unlocked or open windows. Visit the website STOPat4, National Safety Council or the Safety Center at Randall Children’s Hospital for more information. The STOP at 4 website gives you a lot of options on how to lock your windows open at no more than 4” to keep children safe, but also they are easily open in case of a emergency.
