Lyons-Mehama Water Board Recall Goes to Ballot

Residents of Lyons and Mehama are faced with a tough decision: recall or hold the four elected Lyons-Mehama Water District (LMWD) board members on the Linn and Marion County special election ballots. The recall was organized by Concerned Citizens for Safe Water (CCSW). The cost of the recall election will be paid by the Lyons-Mehama Water District. As of April 4, 35% of ballots mailed to Marion County residents have been returned. Ballots are due April 12 by 8pm and can be dropped at Lyons City Hall or US Bank in Mill City in addition to mailing. Postmarks do not count. Regardless of the recall decision, two positions are up for re-election this coming May 17. Officials said the results of the recall will not change the May 17 election. Officials will not comment on how the two remaining positions will be filled, if the recall of all four board members is successful. The four LMWD members up for recall are Terry Tegg, Bruce J Matthis, George L Geddes and Gene Coles. Each received 118-122 voter signatures in favor of the recall in a petition, based on the following regulatory concerns: August, 2010 Public Health Division of DHS Drinking Water Program cited these LMWD deficiencies: • Since 1988: No cross-connection control program, monitoring requirements not complete • Since 2002: Pressure less than 20 PSI at some locations, no written coliform (bacteria) sampling plan, master plan older than 20 years, no emergency response plan, no storage tank inspection/cleaning schedule or records, no record of daily chlorine and caustic soda dose, tracer study not conducted • Since 2007: Consumer confidence report missing or late, operation and maintenance manual incomplete, turbi- Continued on back page
