Celtic music draws visitors to Cayon Arts Center The Canyon Arts Center was a fun place to be this past Sunday afternoon in Mill City. The celtic group Story Road came to perform for a near full house, and what a show it was. The group showcased Stuart Mason on guitar, mandola and vocals, Colleen Raney on Bodhran, guitar and vocals, Johnny B. Connolly on button accordion and vocals and John Weed on fiddle and vocals. This west coast band is on a

west coast tour and are friends of Ken Cartwright and were looking forward to bringing their show to the Arts Center. Most in the audience had never seen this group perform and all the comments from them were positive, and said with smiles on their faces. Ken said this group is welcome back and will book them again for next season's concert series. Story Road, a celtic group, brought an acoustic Irish spirit to the Canyon This coming Saturday nights Arts Center in Mill City last Sunday. The next show (featuring Jacob show with Jacob Jolliff and Jolliff and Wes Corbett) is already sold out, said event organizers. Wes Corbett (cont’d on page 2)

Volunteers work to build Dental relief van helps eight press box at Santiam By Michelle Gates The Santiam Canyon School District football field has an infrastructure problem, and a group of coaches and community members are on the quest to solve it. The problem is that the football field is missing a press box, which is a covered area where officials and coaches can get a better view of the action. It’s something that nearly every other school has, said Head Football Coach Brad Emmert. Without it, SCSD athletic students are at a disadvantage. “With football, as well as in track and field, vantage point and perspective are vital. Coaches sit in the press box and watch for tendencies and play specifics of other teams,” said Emmert. These observations could help them win a game. “By not having this, we are not set up

for optimum success. It’s like trying to run with one eye closed.” The project plans call for a 480 sq ft covered area, which will be built 16 feet above the ground and located just behind the existing bleachers Davis Field. It will have 4 rooms: 2 rooms for coaches, 1 room for the announcer and scorekeeper, and 1 room for boosters. The press box will also have room for support staff. Currently, volunteers scorekeepers often deal with the October rains by huddling under a small outdoor canopy, which provides little shelter from the weather. “People don’t want to do that, and we shouldn’t have to ask them to.” Emmert said that the group is planning to build the press box without any funds from the school district and that it should be completed by fall of 2014. “This project is big- (cont’d on page 5)

By Michelle Gates For some, it can be hard to find the cash to get that dental filling they really need. For a few lucky patients in the Santiam Canyon, those services came to them last week at no charge. Eight local residents were able to get care through the Mobile Dental Program and their travelling 38 foot converted motor home full of dentistry tools on March 7. It was all thanks to the organizing efforts of Wende Thomas and the dental assisting skills of Heather Aerni.

“The dental van was a huge success. We had many extractions and fillings,” said Wende Thomas, who said they saw people from as far as Stayton and Idanha. “So many people were helped and so much pain was relieved. One young man even had his wisdom teeth pulled.” While the program is free to patients, the cost of the van is supposed to be supplemented by the hosting group. In this case, that was Mill City Christian Church. It costs $700 to get the van to a location, and so far the church has r a i s e d (cont’d on page 4) 1
