Deputies issue 24 speeding tickets over weekend during safety campaign Press Release - Deputies from the Marion County Traffic Safety Team conducted a safety campaign on Highway 22 east of Salem on Friday afternoon. Sergeant Craig Cunningham supervised the effort that included three traffic safety cars and a motorcycle. The focus of the campaign was on speeders and those who were following too closely. Highway 22 is a divided four-lane roadway that’s posted for 55mph. It’s a major thoroughfare for travelers from the valley to Detroit Lake or
central Oregon. It’s heavily traveled during the summer. the road is filled with loaded 18-wheelers and cars with boats in tow; all presenting additional hazards to motorists. Between 2pm and 3:30pm, a total of forty vehicles were stopped. 32 citations and 8 warnings were issued. 24 of the citations were for speeding, with 8 drivers cited for speeds in excess of 80mph. Eight citations were issued for following too closely. Sergeant Cunningham commented, “The summer driving season is just around the
corner. We want to encourage drivers to drive at speeds that are safe for the conditions, and to follow at a distance that will allow them to stop when traffic demands it. Our focus is to reduce injuries and deaths from motor vehicle crashes. We know that these violations increase a driver’s chance of being hurt or killed.” Additional TST safety campaigns will be scheduled throughout the summer. Drivers are encouraged to drive safely and to buckle up.
