Lyons Fire votes to purchase new engine, welcomes new board members By Michelle Gates
The Lyons Rural Fire Protection District voted to purchase a new fire engine at the January 17 board meeting, said Captain Bob Bivans. The new engine will come at a cost of $308,000, which they will finance through a flex-lease program. The district is still deciding on how long that lease should be - options range from 5 to 15 years for repayment; the term length will be decided at the next board meeting. Three new volunteer board members were also welcomed last week: Gary Ninman, who brings his firefighting background to the board, Denny Hoop, who brings his business experience to the group and Shannon Waddle, a former office employee for the district, who will serve on the budget committee. “It’s exciting times this year,” said Captain Bob Bivans. “We have full board now and we’ll soon replace our older vehicles with the purchase of the new rescue vehicle and the new fire engine. It’s all coming together.” A recent $100,000 donation from Freres Lumber Company went to purchase a F550 rescue vehicle, which is now paid off and ready to be used for incidents like water rescues and extrications.

Detroit friends and family spent last Saturday feasting in the great outdoors at the 9th annual Cowboy Thanksgiving. The tradition was started almost a decade ago by local legend Maverick, who passed away last year. This year, the tradition continued in his honor with BBQ pulled pork and a “very successful” potluck, said at-
tendee Steve Chittenden. It was held at Ron and Michelle Quintero’s place and “was a great get together for all of us,” said Chittenden. About 70 people came to the Cowboy Thanksgiving - which follows the tradition of celebrating the holiday when the cowboy’s were able to - in January, after the calving season. Popular Pastor moving to Pennsylvania: Bruce Sexton Known to many in the area simply as “The-Preacher”, Bruce Sexton has become a fixture in the Santiam Canyon community. His larger than life persona with his “let-get-this-done” attitude has got a lot done over the past 16 years serving as pastor for the Mill City Presbyte-
rian Church. We catch up with Bruce as he’s busy training a new wave of volunteers to take over the task of the day to day workings of the Mill City food bank. With Sunday being his last day on the local pulpit, Bruce has (cont’d on page 3)
