Happy New Year! Wolverette Saves Detroit Woman From Fire A local Santiam Canyon High School student was getting ready to leave for dance class this past Nov 5 when she spotted smoke and an orange glow surrounding her neighbors mobile home in Detroit. Brittany Foster (center) shares a moment At 6:30am, Brittany Foster, 15, didn‘t hesitate with an appreciative Sandy Bowers (left) and landowner Dave Shelton (right). to run and pound on the door, where neighbor Sandy Bower was unaware of the sparks coming from an adjoining travel trailer, very close to her bedroom. ―I could hear somebody screaming,‖ said Bower, who was about to take a shower when the fire erupted, and who went outside to see if someone had been hurt. In reality, it was the fifteen year old trying to alert Bower that she was the one in danger. ―I‘m just so proud of her,‖ said Deanne Foster, Brittany‘s mother. ―She didn‘t stand around—she just went in there and helped.‖ The rest of the family helped, too—like her brother Joseph Foster, who rescued a cat named Faddle and mother Deanne who tried to ex- Cont. on back page

Holiday Dance Competition The skit competition was held at Santiam High School. This year, the freshman class won with the “Evolution of Dance” which had them doing moves like The Twist, Michael Jackson’s Thriller Zombies and John Travolta’s infamous crowd point. Pet Exercise: Getting Fit With Fido As you begin to make your New Year‘s resolutions in 2011, don‘t forget to set some healthy and realistic goals for your four legged friends. Obesity is one of the largest problems we see in our companion animals. It can lead to other problems that decrease the quality and quantity of our pets‘ lives. Things such as osteoarthritis, diabetes, asthma, pulmonary disease and even some tumors are all linked to obesity in pets. As a rule of thumb, you should not have to press firmly to feel your pets‘ back bone or ribs. In dogs, there should be a waist line, if you will— and you should be able to see the last rib from across the room. There may be many underlying causes to a pet‘s inclining weight. It may be too many calories in and not enough exercise to burn them off. Your pet may need an exam to assess their body condition score and to determine if a ―diet‖ alone would help, or whether other conditions, like a low thyroid may be at play. The Wolverines survived a second half comeback from Jefferson, and clinched the winning point, with a well executed fade away jumper with two seconds left on the clock.

Lyons School, Library Tackle Youth Literacy Lyons Library and Mari-Linn Elementary School have partnered to expose kids to reading before they ever get to the classroom. ―We don‘t have a Head Start or other program to get kids started reading,‖ said Brenda Harris, the Librarian at the Lyons Public Library. ―We need to go to them. We want to make reading fun.‖ The two public entities are targeting pre-school and younger kids—with totes filled with reading an educational materials—and are trying to overcome the challenge of identifying exactly who they are, mostly because this age group has yet to register in the public educational system. Mari-Linn Elementary donated replaced curriculum books and Marion Polk County ―Reading for All‖ grant donated 100 tote bags and 200 free books, but the organizers are still in need of new and gently used books that appeal to kids from birth to age 6. The goal is to hand out 500 books around January 6, just one week prior to the Literacy Night at Mari-Linn on January 13. ―So much happens before they get to school,‖ said teacher Connie Franklin. First Habitat House Coming To Mill City A new family will soon call Mill City home, thanks to a local division of Habitat For Humanity. The Samuell family, which includes parents Joseph, Tanya and five children ages one to thirteen, will be moving into their new house near Kingwood Ave. sometime next summer. They‘ll also help build the house, earning some of the 500 hours of Habitat for Humanity service hours required by the organization. ―It was so hard to find a house to rent that was big enough for all of us—especially one in a good neighborhood," said Tanya Samuell, who currently lives in Sublimity with her family. ―We‘re so happy to be homeowners.‖ The family will be responsible for paying the 30 year zero interest mortgage and will be required to take ongoing classes. They will be helped by the sponsoring organization SLAMMS (Stayton, Lyons, Aumsville, Mill City, Mehama, & Sublimity), the local division of Habitat for Humanity. ―This is a house that the kids will be able to grow up in,‖ said SLAMMS organizer Doug Doornick. Local Churches Help 100 Families The Ministerial Association of Mill City and Gates helped 100 families this Christmas season with 100 food boxes and 93 families who received gifts from local Giving Trees. The donations were given out this past Dec 22 at Mill City Presbyterian Church and Mill City First Christian Church. Several of the food boxes were given to last minute applicants, said Pastor Brian Byers of First Christian. Donated items came from church and community members, as well as Mill City Marketplace and Mill City Pharmacy. Other churches involved include Gates Community Church and Living Water Church of God. “You can’t even begin to put a dollar amount on it,” said volunteer Terri Crall. Correction: In Dec 22 issue ―Gates Neighborhood Watch Lighting Contest‖ it was incorrectly stated that the Gates Fire Dept donated prizes. The Gates Post Office was the actual donor. The Canyon Weekly apologizes for the error.

River Report December 30, 2010 503-897-3301 River levels last week provided huge waves and whirlpools in the upper river and fast trips on lower river levels. The flow at Packsaddle was up to 10,800 cubic feet per second, and the flow at Mehama was up to 11,300 cfs and was 7.5 feet deep. Detroit Lake has been dropping back down toward the low level and the flow into the North Santiam will drop again soon. When that happens, there will be a good chance of finding steelhead (and maybe Coho) in most of the river. The high water was capable of moving big trees around, so scouting needs to be done to make sure all the drifts are clear. Large lures and smelly baits are good this week. Scenic trips will enable people to see more of the riverbank that is normally covered by trees and bushes that are now bare. Lots can be learned and enjoyed in the off season.

Mari-Linn School Sign Approved
The Lyons Planning Commission approved a plan to install a new sign at Mari-Linn Elementary School this past Dec 14. The sign will be similar to the one at the Lyons Fire Hall, with changeable reader board to help the school keep in touch with the community. The new sign will replace the existing sign that faces 5th St, according to the staff report. Funding will be partially covered by a PTA fundraiser.

tinguish the fire with a garden hose. The Idanha/Detroit Rural Fire Dept put out the fire, managing to save most of the house, with the exception of the bedroom where Sandy Bowers used to sleep. Residents believe the cause of the fire to be the electrical connection between the travel trailer and the mobile home, although this was unconfirmed by the local fire department. The travel trailer was completely destroyed, except for two propane tanks that somehow survived the heat. Brittany Foster was given a Hero Award this past Dec 22 by property owner Dave Shelton—the mirror plaque now sits on a china cabinet in Foster‘s kitchen. ―I just hope someone will do the same thing for me,‖ said Foster, who thinks the award should go to everyone in her family. ―I‘m glad no one got hurt. It feels like I did something really good.‖ Fire victim Sandy Bowers has been helped by many community members since the loss of her home, including receiving some back rent from her landlord and by a donation can at River‘s Run Café in Detroit. She is currently seeking a 2 bedroom for herself, three cats and two dogs.
