The Santiam Wolverine Girls Basketball team won three games to take first place at the Bandon Dunes Holiday Tournament on December 19-21. The Lady Wolverines defeated teams from Myrtle Point, Blanchett Catholic and Jefferson High School. This is the 2nd year the team has participated; in 2010, the team placed 4th. In the first game, on Monday, the Wolverines faced a tough Myrtle Point defense, but were able to pull out a 35-30 victory. JJ Halemeier led the team in scoring with 12
points. She also had 9 rebounds. Freshman Hannah Thompson also scored 9 points for the Wolverines. OnTuesday, the Lady Wolverines faced the highly rated Blanchett Catholic from Salem. They held the lead from start to finish and beat Blanchett 48-33. Brittney Thompson went six for six from the field and led all scorers with 13 points and hauled in 7 rebounds. JJ Halemeier had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Harley Davidson, Olivia Santos and Hannah Thompson each scored 7 points in the win. Wednesday’s Championship game featured Santiam vs. the Lions of Jefferson High School. In this exciting game, Jefferson led the contest at the end of the third quarter by 10 points. A determined fourth quarter by the Lady Wolverines led to a comeback. Santiam out-scored Jefferson 16 to 4 to steal the victory and the championship. Hannah Thompson led the team in scor-
ing with 19 points including 4 three point baskets. JJ Halemeier had 7 points. Harley Davidson and Brittney Thompson each had 5 rebounds for the team. Santiam players selected for the All Tournament team were JJ Halemeier and Brittney Thompson. In addition, Santiam High School was also awarded the 2011 Sportsmanship Award. This was the first year the Bandon Tournament presented this award. The Bandon Booster club decided to present this award as a part of the tournament because they were so impressed by sportsmanship of the Santiam teams in 2010. In presenting the award the Bandon Booster Club recognized Santiam High School students for their enthusiasm, manners and conduct throughout the tournament.

High speed pursuit leads to 2 arrests Two Lebanon residents take a stolen Volkswagen for a Chirstmas Eve, 110 mile per hour ride on Hwy 226
Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller reports his deputies and other officers from several mid-valley agencies were involved in a high speed car chase in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve. On December 24 at 2:56 a.m. a Linn County Deputy on routine patrol interrupted a car prowl in progress on Highway 20, just east of Goldfish Farm Road. The Deputy noticed an occupied 2003 silver Volkswagen Passat parked near a disabled car on the shoulder of the road. When the deputy approached to investigate further, the Passat drove away from the area. The deputy noticed there was a car dealership placard in place of the license plate on the car. When the occupants of the Volkswagen realized the deputy was following them, they drove at a high rate of speed northbound on Goldfish Farm Road toward Knox Butte Road. The vehicle slowed down and an unidentified male passenger was able to exit it and run from the vehicle. Assisting officers from Albany Police Department searched the area, but the man was not found. The pursuit continued east on Knox Butte Road, then east on Highway 226 into the Scio, Lyons and Kingston Jordan area. At 3:08 a.m. the Corvallis police department received a report of a stolen 2003 Volkswagen Passat matching the description of the vehicle involved in the pursuit. At 3:27 a.m. a second Linn County Deputy was able to deploy spike strips on Kingston-Lyons Drive and successfully deflate all the
tires on the Passat. The driver refused to stop even after the front tires on the car disintegrated over several miles. Additional officers, troopers, and deputies from the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, Albany Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Stayton Police Department responded to the area for assistance. At 3:33 a.m. an officer from the Albany Police Department trained in the Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT) was able to safely forcibly stop the Passat using the PIT. The pursuit covered approximately 40 miles and reached speeds of 110 mph. Corvallis Police confirmed the Passat was the vehicle stolen out of a residential driveway in Corvallis. The driver was identified as 34 yr old Shyanna Ridinger of Lebanon. Ridinger was taken into custody and transported to the Linn County Jail. She was lodged on charges of Attempt to Elude, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Unauthorized Entry to a Motor Vehicle and Theft II. Also in the vehicle was 46 year old Randy Edward Drake of Lebanon. Drake was arrested and transported to the Linn County Jail where he was lodged on a felony probation violation warrant. Drake faces additional charges of Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Unauthorized Entry to a Motor Vehicle and Theft II. Suspected stolen personal property was recovered from the vehicle. The investigation continues.

Grocery store reopens in Detroit
Lyndia and Terry Basl recently reopened Detroit Market (formerly Detroit Lake Market) so that the community could have a place to get their grocery staples. “The community needs something other than a convenience store,” said Lyndia Basl, who bought the temporarily closed business last November and reopened the store on December 2. It’s now filling up fast, with plans to
carry frozen meats & veggies, plus staples like laundry soap and baby food. “I grew up here - it was like of one big happy family,” said Basl. And family will play a big part in the store’s operations, with Basl’s daughter Alys Ammon pulling clerk duty, her mom Jean Hinkley as the store manager and her dad Don Hinkley holding down the “gopher” position. The Detroit Market is located at 100 Forest Avenue, near Hwy 22 on the south side of town. They’ll be open 7 days from 7am-7pm, with extended hours in the summer.
New chief joins Idanha-Detroit fire Jim Trett is no stranger to jumping into the deep end. “You have to be an adrenaline junkie to be a firefighter,” said Trett, who was recently asked to be the new fire chief for the struggling Idanha-Detroit Rural Fire Protection District (RFPD). The department is recovering from a recent embezzlement and the loss of a major Idanha employer - both of which led to a steep decline in volunteer firefighters. But other factors, like sheer demographics, have made it hard for the department to return to its former glory. “A lot of families moved when the school system moved. It’s become kind of a retirement community,” said Trett. He said that a lot of Idanha and Detroit residents are willing volunteers, but
who just can’t do the job because of the often physical demands. So Jim Trett is using his 35 years as a volunteer with the Keizer Fire Department to create partnerships with other communities. “The RFPD board really wants to do it - and they want to do it right. Let’s see if we can make it work.” Right now, volunteer firefighters are paid $5-10 per call and receive trainings, like an upcoming extrication class to prepare them for the many motor vehicle accidents in their district. Volunteers are not required to live in the Idanha/Detroit area. “We may have to look beyond this area. Some people need training and want to come up here just to learn. We help them and they help us,” said Trett. “Hopefully, we’ll get some positive melding going on. I’m excited to be here.” Info: 503-854-3494

The Santiam Canyon Youth & Families Alliance (SCYFA) met last week to ask the community how to use a potential $18,000 grant from Marion County Children & Families Commission. Several members of the public spoke with the SCYFA board to suggest literacy programs, student-to-student mentoring programs, public computer literacy classes and homework, skillbuilding and academic programs. One suggestions was a oral story telling club. “When (kids) are telling a story, they really come alive,” said Renate Medley, a SCYFA board member. Others suggested a clay animated mov-
ie project that incorporates art, writing and computer skills. The $18,000 grant is still in the application process; members of SCYFA will meet Jan 9 to finalize the request. Funded programs must be resource based, with numbers and guidelines that show success. “We have to show that something is happening as a result of (the programs),” said Nichole Cooper, a SCYFA board member. The funding is part of Marion County’s Community Investment Strategy, which will award grants to 11 areas. The Santiam Canyon Youth and Families Alliance’s misson is to bring together community efforts and resources to ensure an equal opportunity for all children and families in Marion County to attain their full potential. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office Cadet Academy is currently seeking applicants, with a particular interest in those from the Stayton/Sublimity area.
