Locals from all over the Santiam Canyon School District packed the high school gymnasium this past Dec 16 for the K-12 Holiday Program. This annual event brings forth community members to catch up & enjoy the voices of local children—and spread the holiday cheer!

Denise’s 7th Annual Elkhorn Christmas Party Left: Sophie Widmer enjoys a holiday cupcake with a friend.

This year, 44 friends gathered in Elkhorn to celebrate the holidays.

The theme for the night was Santa Clause, and the guests were challenged to count how many of the 169 figurines were placed around the grounds by host Denise Collins. Final results: the adults found 163, the kids found 168, and everyone had a good time.

Tornado Cancels Two Programs The Mari-Linn Elementary Holiday Christmas Program was cancelled due to power outages associated with the Aumsville tornado this past Dec 15. The program has been rescheduled to a yet to be determined date sometime in January.

Mill City High School Slam Dunk Hunger Night was also cancelled due to the power outages; a new date has not been confirmed to The Canyon Weekly.

Low Interest Disaster Loans Available For Marion County Businesses Press Release—Small, non-farm businesses in Marion and surrounding counties are now eligible to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). ―These loans offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by excessive rain and below normal temperatures that occurred from April 1 through July 4, 2010,‖ announced Alfred E. Judd, Director of SBA‘s Disaster Field Operations Center West.

The loans are available to those who have suffered losses by direct impact of the agricultural disaster. Small, non-farm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives and most private, non-profit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred.

The interest rate of the loans ranges from 3-4%, for a maximum term of 30 years. Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance. The deadline to apply for these loans is August 8, 2011. Mari-Linn Cookie Dough Fundraiser Limousine Ride

The first annual Cookie Dough Fundraiser at Mari-Linn brought in $4000 for the school. It seems that no matter where we look, the staff at The Canyon Weekly keeps coming across people who are helping our community become a better place to live. Here’s a few more that top our list...

North Santiam Eagles Lodge, Area #3384 Started in 1969 by local charter members, the Eagles are all about giving back to residents, while at the same time founding an establishment for them to gather. Their current project is a fundraising raffle for local community centers, like the Mill City Library and Food Bank— where a $1 ticket could win you a rafting trip for four, some bark dust from Frank Lumber, or a gift certificate to Gene‟s Meat Market.

Located in Mill City, the Eagles lodge currently has 350 active members ranging all over the Santiam Canyon and beyond, with a definite trend toward the younger generation in the past few years. “We‟re all about the community,” said Justin Merrill. “I like it because I can take my son down there and don‟t have to worry about him.” Membership costs $50 for men, including the first years application fee. Meals on Wheels Six different community groups help with this project that delivers to 13 local residents and feeds another 25 restaurant style at Mill City Presbyterian Church twice a week. Ruth Higgs organizes the 35 volunteers who distribute to Lyons, Mehama, Mill City and Gates. Joyce & Virgil Trout are two volunteers who work hard for the cause by helping distribute the primarily community donation funded meals. To volunteer (or donate) call 503-897-2204.

While the chances of another tornado coming through the canyon may be slim, the threat of another winter power outage is something no one should ignore.

Here‘s some tips from the Mill City Fire Department on how to keep your family safe.

Avoid Candles These dainty and often fun lights can create more problems if left unattended, especially with kids.

Turn Off Your Stove It‘s an easy one to forget when you can‘t see anything, but that pot of pasta you were cooking won‘t stay off when the power comes back, regardless if you‘re there or not. This one goes for any other electrical equipment that needs supervision, too.

Keep The Generator & BBQ Outside Yeah, we all know the stories where someone tries to warm up or cook in these unorthodox ways, then doesn‘t survive to tell the tale.

Local Firefighter Rescues Puppy

Lt. Dan Houston of the Stayton Fire District rescued a female pit bull puppy from a burning house in Lyons this past Dec 16.

An electrical fault was the cause of the fire on Main St, according to local officials.

The lucky three month old dog named „Lady‟ was found under the bed in a back bedroom. She suffered from smoke inhalation that was helped with an oxygen mask at the scene, and has since been cleared by her veterinarian, said owner Stephen Harwood. Lady and her owners are currently staying with friends.

As a result of the rescue, Lt. Dan Houston has now been officially nicknamed „the dog whisperer‟ by his department.

River Report December 22, 2010 503-897-3301 The river will be high next week.

Temperature is good for fish and wildlife, and clarity is okay. Trees and rootwads move around in the high water, so when the river level drops it will be interesting to see which river channels have changed. Some channels are probably going to be blocked so boaters need to be able to deal with unexpected situations.

Temps range around 43 degrees F. Steelhead will move a little and will bite at those temperatures, but will be in different water than when the river is lower. The islands on the lower river are a good place to look.

Detroit Lake trapped all that rain and snowmelt we had last week, and the lake rose fifty feet during the week. The valley towns did not flood because of the function of the dam. Now that the rain has abated a little, the lake needs to drop again so it can provide flood control for the next big storm.

The North Santiam will be artificially high during this process. The river may be too high for comfortable trips but good for seasoned boaters who want a challenge.
