Construction starts at Mill City City Hall
Design team taking bids from local contractors, needing “everything from concrete on up” It’s official. After months of planning, re-planning and quite a bit of scrutiny, the security fence is now up, the build team trailer is parked, and the ground officially broken at the site of Mill City’s new City Hall on the corner of 1st and Fairview. Council members, citizens, donors and builders gathered Tuesday afternoon to witness what is no-less than a momentous occasion. Adam Thomas, the team leader from Precision Construction was there, shovel in hand. “I’m just happy to be able to get started on this project,” he said, reporting that excavation will begin this Thursday by Z Excavation of Silverton. The entire build process will take roughly 5 ½ to 6 months to finish, weather permitting, according to the design build team. As the crowd milled around in the frosty mud the word “finally” was echoed repeatedly. “I’m quite pleased to be finally underway,” said city councilor Ann Holaday. “It’s exciting for the community. I’m really looking forward to the ribbon cutting!” “I’m just glad it’s finally getting started,” said councilor Justin Merrill.

“The turn out, at such a short notice, shows the strong support from the community,” said Mayor Tim Kirsch. “ I too am happy to see it finally get going, and I’m happy we took our time to get it done right.” The short ceremony with photo ops was scheduled just prior to the evening’s city council meeting, where community members again mentioned concerns about the costs, and the choice of design team. Bill Downer, a former mayor and current business owner, voiced his opinion to the council. “Almost ½ million dollars and the new one doesn’t look a lot better than the one that burnt down. I’m disappointed we didn’t go with a local builder, I know a local framer who wanted the job, but he wasn’t contacted,” Downer said. Mayor Kirsch replied,” The local contractors can put in bids. We welcome the

bids, so send them over!” Kirsch further explained that the Precision Construction design team is still looking for “everything from concrete on up” including framing, sheet-rocking and roofing. Potential subcontractors can visit the on-site trailer for information, and the council members stressed at the meeting to please pass the word to neighbors and friends who might be qualified and interested. The city of Mill City has a new up-to date website also, and can be viewed at www.ci.mill-city.or.us. The plans for the city hall, with projected costs and updated information is located under “News and Events.”
