Hoodoo Ski Resort Opens Hoodoo Ski Resort opened this past Thanksgiving weekend to the glee of many a snow hound…

“We got the call to open last Monday,” said Brynne Beverly, the office manager.

“We normally open on December 2nd.”

Skier and snowboarder visits hit 2300 for the first weekend of the season. The resort opened on Friday a er Thanksgiving at 9am, with most li s running including the Manzanita, Ed Thurson and Easy Rider chairs. Hoodoo also opened the Autobahn, the tubing area with 800 (cont’d on back pg.)

Cabin fever is going to be epidemic if the weather doesn't dry up for a couple of days so we can get some quality me in the outdoors.

More trees have moved between Shelburn and Green's Bridge. Will High will take several of us through the area on Thursday, Dec. 16. We will meet at the Stayton Donut Shop at 8a.m. and launch at 9a.m. Other boaters are welcome to tag along.

North San am River volume at Packsaddle last week started at 7,250 cubic feet per second and started to drop down to 3,100 cfs today. At Mehama last week, volume varied from 8,810 cfs down to 5540, and this corresponds to 6.9 feet deep at Mehama down to 5.3 feet.

Ducks and geese were very busy on the lower river last week when their ponds were frozen and they came to the running water near the farmlands.

Hun ng was good from boats or from blinds near the river. Cabin fever may have a cure. This is a great me to organize river dates and get gi cer ficates for trips.

Got Fleas?

Have you been surprised at the number of fleas on your pets this year? Anxious for winter when they will all go away?

Sorry to disappoint you, but unless there is a very prolonged and hard freeze, it is unlikely that the flea burden will let up any time soon.

The humidity and temperatures this fall have created the perfect storm for the fleas to continue uninterrupted right into next spring.

Not sure if your dog/cat has fleas? Try this: take a flea comb or a fine toothed man’s comb and comb through the hair on your pet’s back side right above the tail. Shake it out onto a moistened white paper towel.

Let it sit for 5 minutes. If you see little red or pink specks developing, that is flea dirt (more accurately flea poop). If you see this you need to adjust your flea prevention plan.

Fleas have developed resistance to many over the counter products and many of these products, though labeled safe, can be very toxic to cats and small dogs. Safer alternatives are available. Whatever method you choose to ward of these pesky blood suckers, it will take three months of consecutive treatment before you can break their lifecycle and see a reduction in their numbers.

Upcoming Performing Arts

Dance Competition Saturday Twelve time State Champions, the Santiam Wolverettes will be hosting their 33rd annual dance competition on Dec 4th at Santiam High School in Mill City.

First round starts at 12pm, second at 3:30pm with doors opening 1/2 hour prior.

There will be ten teams attending as well as exhibitions from the Santiam Wolverettes, Valley Starlights Jr Dance teams, Alumni, and Sweeperboys. Admission is $6 per person per round (2 rounds) with children 5 & under free.

Santiam Drama Club Presents

“The Little Theater’s Production of Hamlet”, a coming of age story about a small town with big dreams to put on Shakespeare’s most famous play. Director and Drama club Advisor, Bill Brown (pictured here with student/actor Natazha Johnson) calls the play “delightful” and is “impressed by it’s humor and depth of character.”

Showtime is at 7:30 on December 8 & 9, at the recently renovated Santiam Performing Arts Auditorium at the High School. Tickets are $5, children under 5 are free.

San am Canyon Community Chorus Started in 2004, the Santiam Canyon Community Chorus will be performing at the Historical Society’s Christmas meeting this coming December 2 at 7pm, at the Mill City Middle school. Joining the ensemble will be many members of Santiam High School’s American Pop Culture class. The Chorus was founded by Director Joanne Hebing, and always welcomes new members. The Mill City Moose Lodge hosted the Canyon Pool League this past November 28. The home team played against the Silver Dollar Team from Scio on their freshly re-covered pool table.

“You have three opponents in pool,” said Charles Follis, the Moose Lodge administrator. “Yourself, the other person, and the pool table. The pool table fights with me all the time.”

Proceeds from the event go to support local charities, including Mill City food bank, the local firefighters, and school supplies for local kids.

The Frolov family of four went to Hoodoo to tube the Autobahn and snowboard the mountain this past weekend. “There was a very good crowd...the snow was really nice, very soft and powdery. My son fell down and said it reminded him of cotton.”

Many locals, including the Frolovs, like the ski area because it’s close to home. The weekend started with a 28” base and finished with an additional five inches. Hoodoo will be open Thursday thru Sunday until the season is in full swing on December 9.

“I think we had a better than average turnout,” said Brynne Beverly.
