School District To Hold Tax Levy Meeting By Michelle Gates
The Santiam Canyon School District will be holding a meeting for residents of the district to determine how voters might respond to a new property tax. The tax would benefit Gates Elementary, Mill City Middle School and Santiam High School and is proposed to help with programs like art, music, athletics, physical education or after school activities and building repairs. ―We really offer nothing in the arts right now,‖ said Ross Miller, Santiam High School English teacher. ―There’s a strong correlation between music education and success in areas like math. Right now, we have a gaping hole in our school curriculum.‖ The district has received a 90 percent positive response from staff surveys and is looking for input from local voters, according to Steve Neilsen, the

Mill City Middle School Commons school district business manager. Neilson indicated that they have received unanimous support for music programs, but need community input on where else the money would go. ―We really want people to come and give their two cents worth,‖ said Neilsen. ―We know that there are a lot of people out there who would support it. If not, we want to know why.‖ The tax levy, proposed for the March, 2011 elections, would range from 25 cents to one dollar per $1,000 of assessed property value. Current property taxes are shared throughout the state. A tax at this level would go directly to programs that support local students and families.
Local Fans Gather For Ducks Game The Mill City Eagles Lodge hosted the Oregon vs Auburn football game this past Jan 10 and many locals joined in the support of the Ducks (including a few Beaver fans). The Ducks were tied at the final two minutes, but Auburn stole the game to the dismay of many attendees. Final score was 22-19. Local Landmark Gets New Sign
A new sign was installed at Rosie’s Mountain Coffee House this past Jan 4. ―Everyone has said it’s a big improvement,‖ said Beth Chatleain, co-owner of the coffee house that’s known around the world for their famous scones. The sign was designed and installed by White Water Signs and Graphics of Detroit, who worked with the Chatleains to develop a cost-effective match to the existing sign on the side of the building. The sign is made of easy to maintain PVC fencing product. ―It made such an immediate difference,‖ said Dave Shelton, White Water Signs & Graphics. This movie may be slightly dark (and is rated for those over 14) but the place locals go to find this kind of entertainment is full of good cheer—and beer and snacks and 750 other titles that range from Mrs. Doubtfire on VHS to the newest DVD releases that won’t make it to nonretail outlets for weeks to come. Broadway Video, owned by Lyons resident Brenda Lukenbaugh, reinvented the former dollar store building across from the pharmacy because ―one of her dreams is to have her own store.‖ Open 10am-6pm, closed Sunday. NSCEDC Board Gets New Members Three new board members were voted in to the North Santiam Canyon Economic Development Corporation this past December, according to a recent press release. The new members are: Nancy Hendricks of Fresh To You Produce in Stayton, Sue Nichols, the Community Development Director of Travel Salem, and John McGinn of AllPro Webworks in Stayton.

Elkhorn Golf Course Seeks Youth Grant Recipients The 10th annual Youth Benefit Golf Tournament at Elkhorn Valley Golf Course generated funds that will go directly to those in the greater Santiam Canyon area, including Lyons, Mehama, Elkhorn, Mill City, Gates, Niagara, Detroit and Idanha. Past projects funded include libraries, theater, sports, and recreation associations. Aumsville Tornado Relief Concert & Auction Jan. 15, 6pm at Cascade High School (Marion Rd between Turner & Aumsville) AM 1460 KCKX will present a fundraiser concert and auction for the uninsured victims of the tornado in Aumsville this past December 14. The goal is to raise $10,000 to help pay for needed repairs. Admission is suggested at $5 or more per person. River Report January 12, 2011 503-897-3301 The weekly river volume forecast changed dramatically this morning. The Army Engineers make their forecast on Mondays, and do not revise them until the following Monday. Since conditions may change dramatically in a seven day period, the forecasts may change dramatically this time of year. That happened this week! Early on January 10, river volume at Packsaddle was 1,450 cubic feet per second. That was increased in the early morning up to 2,500 cfs or more, and the new projection is for about 2,200 cfs at Packsaddle and about 3,100 cfs at Mehama for the next four or five days. The increase in volume changes the character of the rapids from moderate to substantial. A different kind of fun is involved with the higher flow. All sections are still navigable, and there is something delightful about each of the drifts. Fish are running slowly. The weather is cold with a few dry days. Good planning makes for good river trips.

GENE’S MEAT MARKET Update on Gates Fire Hall ―The building is progressing very nicely,‖ said Fire Chief Gary Swanson. ―Everything seems to fit into our community.‖ They have received an additional $105,000 in grants and are still seeking $120,000 to finish the building. The scheduled official opening is May 14 and the Dept will be holding a concert on May 21 with local musicians. Correction: In Dec 30 issue ―Wolverette Saves Detroit Woman From Fire‖ it was omitted that fire departments from Lyons, Mill City, Gates and Sublimity provided primary assistance in putting out the fire. Nicole Miller of Gates, Oregon will begin teaching Zumba Fitness® classes at Santiam High School in the commons area on Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The first class session will be held Jan. 20 through March 17; two free demo classes are available beforehand on January 13 at 6:30 p.m. and January 15 at 5 p.m. Zumba Fitness is the only Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends red-hot international music and contagious steps to form a "fitness party" that is downright addictive.
