ordy, lordy, look who’s 40! That’s right, Canyon Creek Life turns 40! They say that age is just a number and you’re only as old as you feel, but how does that work in magazine years? I don’t know the answer to that question, but it’s safe to say, like many things, magazines also get better with age. And as you’re holding the 40th issue of your friendly neighborhood magazine, we hope you feel that’s true for Canyon Creek Life. The team here at Canyon Creek Life feels honored to have shared forty issues of stories about your neighbors, their families, their pets, their student-athletes, their businesses and so much more. You’ve met families who are new to the neighborhood, families that have been here for years, and families that have been here since the first houses were built in Canyon Creek. That’s a lot of history to pack into 36 pages. And to think, when we started this magazine six years ago, we thought it would be a challenge to fill the pages of each issue. Boy were we wrong! There is so much to share about this awesome neighborhood and we love being a tiny part of it all. We thank you, Canyon Creek, for sharing, reading, and supporting your neighbors through a little happy piece of mail that comes to your mailboxes every other month. Pets of the Month shelter reached out to me for help. I am still trying to decide if she is rehabable or if I need to find a sanctuary for her. I also rehab baby squirrels so at any one time, I have varying numbers of bottle baby squirrels, currently I have 8 that are about to be released. Tell us about your pet: fun tricks, unique talents, quirky personality, etc. Our pets are all quirky, Lola knows one trick and that is how to spin. She is very proud of it and shows of to anyone that will watch. Ryder isn’t really smart enough to know tricks, he is scared of water and grass so he can be challenging at times. Ryder has never met a stranger and thinks everyone/dog is his best friend.

Tell us your names and your pet’s name. My name is Relle, I am an animal lover a pet rescuer, a rehabber and I generally enjoy helping out have all kinds of animals. I have two dogs, Lola is a 10 year old Basset hound mix and Ryder is a 5 year old Bloodhound mix. Lola and Ryder are both rescues and have been foster siblings to a great many animals. Lola was adopted from a local rescue soon after we moved to Canyon Creek. Lola was 8 weeks old when she came to live with us, she had ears that droops into the water bowl and the saddest droopy eyes. Ryder was born to a momma dog that was living on the streets and was taken in to a local rescue where I sat with her during the birth. At 5 weeks old, Ryder had his eye hurt playing with one of his siblings. He came to 4
stay with me whilst he recovered and never left. We have a little tabby cat called Skittles that I picked up at a vaccination clinic my rescue (DSDA.org) was hosting in far south Dallas. A little girl arrived with a box full of kittens and after talking to her and realizing she had no homes for the kittens to go to, I brought them home to foster and we found homes for the others. My daughter, Tilly fell in love with Skittles and she never left. Our tortoise, Titan is a Russian (desert) tortoise, he enjoys running around our backyard and eating dandelions. He also loves to harvest our strawberries. We also have three foster dogs that came from feral dog packs in South Dallas. Susie has been with us for about 3 years, she was lucky enough to have a Dodo movie made about her rescue and we are very proud of the rescue of her and her 28 other family members. Susie is a stunning great pyr mix and when she is rehabbed, she will be looking for a forever home. Redwood is a yellow lab mix and was rescued from a feral pack down south of Wilmer, he spent his first month terrified but is slowly starting to realize humans are pretty good. Red is currently undergoing heartworm treatment and will be ready for adoption sometime in the future. Foxy is a GSD mix and has been with us for a few weeks, she was rescued from a drainpipe by some firemen in Ellis County. Being feral, her options were limited so the www.CanyonCreekLife.com
How long have you lived in Canyon Creek? My family moved to Canyon Creek 13 years ago. We are Australians that weren’t born here but got here as fast as we could. What do you love most about living in the Canyon Creek? I love the trees, the people, the pets and that everything I need is in the neighborhood. I honestly only leave the neighborhood to rescue animals, everything one needs can be sourced locally in our little corner of Richardson. Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in Canyon Creek? One thing that’s awesome about this neighborhood is that we all have each other’s back (kids and pets). One time, when I first moved here, my dog, Lola escaped from my yard and she was “rescued” by my back neighbor who I hadn’t had the pleasure of meeting yet. She didn’t get more than two houses away. One day my son fell off his bike riding home from school and one of the amazing moms from Aldridge threw him and his bike into the car and brought him home. You couldn’t find another neighborhood like this. It’s one of a kind. Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about your pets? My pets aren’t pets, they’re family, and they make me happy.

omeowners can benefit from replacing their windows. New windows can enhance the visual look of the home, reduce energy use, and add resale value for owners looking to sell. There are many window designs available that will add to the curb appeal of any home. New windows can also improve home security with better latching systems. An owner can replace their own windows, but a fair amount of aptitude with tools and home construction is needed to prevent damage to the home. And, in Texas you need to make sure windows have some give to move with shifting soils. Selecting a good contractor can be a cost-effective way to obtain new windows and quality installation. The contractor can supply necessary permits and schedule inspection, and the installation team can often complete the job in one day or less 6
depending on the size of the home. Prior to signing a contract, homeowners should check reviews of local contractors, contact the Better Business Bureau, and obtain multiple estimates. To provide an accurate estimate, the existing windows will be measured, and the contractor should discuss window design options. Many styles are available for replacement windows, and the homeowner should also consider using “low E” glass, which reflects heat back outdoors and reduces ultraviolet radiation into the home to protect furnishings. Windows can be single hung, which open only from the bottom with a fixed top pane, or double hung, that allows both panes to be opened. Double hung windows can normally be tilted in by moving latches at the top, allowing the windows to be cleaned from inside the home. When installation begins, the crew will first remove the old windows and inspect the window frame for unexpected damage www.CanyonCreekLife.com
requiring additional repair. The new window, custom measured for the opening, will be set in place and screwed into the window frame in accordance with local building codes. Frames and trim will be added as needed, and the inside and outside of the windows are caulked as a last step. Once installed, replacement windows can provide years of energy efficient service. Homeowners should inspect the new window installation prior to signing a contract completion or providing final payment. Reputable contractors often provide warranties that an owner can use for repairs or installation issues that are found later. Some national window companies provide serial numbers for each window they manufacture. This can be an advantage if an owner needs to replace or repair a window later due to storm or other damage. And, there are city rebate programs available for home improvement projects which could help with the project cost.

Tell us about your family. My husband Steve and I have been married for nearly 14 years and have raised three beautiful children. Steve is a senior marketing representative for Federated Insurance Company providing life, disability and commercial insurance and risk management services to locally owned businesses for the last 19 years. The oldest Micaela, age 26, graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2017 and now lives and works in Dallas. Megan, age 24, graduated from Texas A&M University in 2019 and now lives and works in Chicago. Ethan, age 21, is in his junior year at Texas A&M University as a Finance Major. They all graduated from John Paul II High School. Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in Canyon Creek. One of our first Halloween nights in the neighborhood, we ventured to the other side of the creek. We walked up to the door with the kids and little did we know, adults got “treats,” too! As the kids were handed candy, the gentleman, who introduced himself as a distributor for Jose Cuervo, handed us our “treat” of spirits. We knew this was the neighborhood for us! Anything else you’d love for your neighbors to know about your business or you? I love facilitating all types of events - yoga for beginners, couple’s partner yoga, wine & chocolate yoga, corporate yoga for both large and small groups as well as yoga for all types of athletes. Stefan Stahl 3rd grade and through participation in an advanced math class, called Math Rocks, my interest continued to grow. I have always really enjoyed my math classes throughout my school years. Tell us about your plans after graduation. After Pearce, I want to attend college, but I don’t have a specific college or university in mind yet. I would love to play baseball in college, so that will be a big deciding factor on where I attend. As for academic pursuits, I currently want to major in Actuarial Science because of my natural ability in math but I still remain open to other options.

Tell us your name, what school you currently attend (or recently attended), and what year you are in school. My name is Stefan Stahl, I am currently a Junior at J.J. Pearce High School. What other schools have you attended? I attended Andrews Elementary and Rice Middle School, both in Plano. I moved to Canyon Creek the summer before my freshman year of high school, so my first year in Richardson ISD was at Pearce. Tell us what sports or activities you were involved in and why you enjoy it. I play Baseball for Pearce High School during the school year, and I also play on a summer team for United Baseball Club. Brag on yourself: Tell us your honors and awards in school. I am in the top 10% of my class at Pearce. I have also taken 8 AP level classes across my first three years of high school. What’s your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school is definitely math. I discovered my aptitude for it in the 10
Outside of schools and sports, what do you do for fun, hobbies, work, etc.? I am a member of the Young Men's Service League, a service organization where mothers and sons serve together to make an impact on our local communities. Other things I enjoy during my free time include working out, playing other sports like football with friends, as well as solving puzzles with my grandparents. How long have you lived in Canyon Creek? I am relatively new to Canyon Creek, I have only lived here for three years now. My family moved into this neighborhood from Plano during the summer before my freshman year. What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? My favorite part of living in Canyon Creek is the people here. I have yet to meet someone that isn’t incredibly friendly; everybody either waves or smiles when passing each other. I love it here and the friends I have met since moving to the area. There is definitely something special about this area. Tells us a favorite story or two about a big moment or fun moment playing your sport. One of my favorite memories in baseball happened right before the pandemic ended our season. Every year, the Pearce baseball team would travel to Round Rock before the official season started to play some teams www.CanyonCreekLife.com
from another area before beginning our district matchups. Our first day down there, we played Round Rock highschool, who were ranked top 15 in the state at the time. I was just a sophomore on varsity but I got the chance to start on the mound that game. I got off to a rough start, giving up two runs over the first two innings, but eventually settled in for the rest of the game. Towards the end of the game, a teammate, Nick Greaney, hit a three run homerun to give us the lead. We ended up winning that game 3-2, even though we were the definite underdogs. It was so memorable because it was one of the last games before the pandemic ended the season and it was definitely the main highlight of my short sophomore season. Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in Canyon Creek. One of my favorite memories of living in Canyon Creek happened on one of the first days after I moved here. My house backs to the creek and I was fishing in my backyard when my neighbor, another boy who was also the same age as me, came up and asked me if I wanted to go fishing with him the next day. We ended up going, and continued to go throughout that summer which made me feel very welcome to the new neighborhood. Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about you? My dad is Swedish and my mom is from the midwest. I think that has shaped me having parents from two different countries. I am one of three children. I have two older sisters. My oldest sister Sophia graduated from Penn State last year and my other sister Linnea just completed her junior year at UTD.

O
ne of Kari and Colin Sims’ first dates was like many other couples - at a sporting event. They enjoyed the game and spent time with friends at a bar afterwards. The only difference was the sporting event was Super Bowl XLVII, they watched Beyoncé perform, and the bar was Channing Tatum’s bar on Bourbon Street with Channing Tatum there himself, as well as Scott Porter from Friday Night Lights and Hart of Dixie. A super typical first date to say the least. Colin and Kari worked for an event planning company that is contracted by the NFL to plan and organize each Super Bowl. About seven months before the big game in February, Kari would fly out to the city where the game was hosted. She would work in the stadium every day, learning the complete layout and planning all of the logistics of many moving parts leading up to the famed Sunday. Colin was in a different department, so he would usually fly out a month in advance, but because they didn’t work in the same department it took some time before they met. When Dallas hosted Super Bowl XLV in 2011, Kari and Colin were put on the same team working together. There was an immediate attraction, (on Colin’s end), and they got to know each other very quickly from the long hours working together.
Kari fell in love with Dallas and decided to stick around and move to Uptown, but she knew there was still something missing. While she was working her last Super Bowl in New Orleans before changing careers, Colin took a chance and asked Kari out. They went out on Bourbon Street that night and went their separate ways after the weekend. Just 90 days after doing long distance dating, with Colin in Phoenix and Kari in Dallas, he packed his bags and relocated to Dallas to be with her. Kari now works for a local frozen food company and Colin is with a software company, and while the inwww.CanyonCreekLife.com
dustries are extremely different from the exciting NFL experience, they are happy with their career changes and the slower pace of life they bring. Kari is originally from Illinois and Colin from Michigan, and without a single family member here for either of them, they heavily relied on each other’s company to make it through the first year. They got married in 2014 in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, exactly four hours away from each of their families, but they still wanted to live and start a family in Dallas. They lived in Lakewood for a few years, but at the end of 2019 they were 13
looking for a place they could grow into with their second daughter on the way. In February of 2020, they put their house on the market and it sold immediately. They now needed to find a place to move to, and fast. After many awkward socially-distanced, hand-sanitized tours, they still weren’t finding the house they had in mind. It wasn’t until Tim and Caroline Neagle, parents of a classmate of Kari and Colin’s three-year-old daughter, Kennedy, recommended Canyon Creek that they even discovered the little hidden gem, and Kari was instantly awe-struck. The Sims’ only looked at two houses and made an offer on one the next day. “We just couldn’t get over the landscape and the houses didn’t look the same like in other neighborhoods. When I stumbled across Two Creeks I just thought it was the cutest little neighborhood village I had ever seen,” Kari describes of her first encounter of the neighborhood, “We just got so lucky.” The honeymoon phase of the new home purchase quickly faded after moving in. It was still in the middle of the pandemic, after all, and Kari and Colin were growing increasingly concerned as weeks were going by and there wasn’t any sign of life outside. “We were so nervous about where we had ended
up and what we had done!” Kari and Colin laughed, reflecting on the first three weeks. “Slowly but surely, we met all sorts of people and now we wouldn’t trade anything to be anywhere else. We really love the people that’s the best part about it here.” Kari was eight months pregnant when they moved into the home, and a neighbor recommended that she look into joining the Canyon Creek Moms Club. She gave birth to their second daughter, Annabel, at the beginning of June and it was truly at that moment that Kari was grateful they moved into Canyon Creek. The Canyon Creek Moms Club stepped up and became her family away from family, delivering enough meals to last the family more than a week and providing Kari with any item she needed to make her comfortable. “It was the perfect way to find community quickly. As a newer, younger mom, it was so great to have those resources,” she said. Both Kari and Colin’s parents were able to safely travel down soon after to see the newest family member, and later that summer the Sims traveled up to Illinois and Lake Geneva to see the place they said their vows - a summer tradition they are excited to share with their daughters.

Now a year later, recently celebrating Annabel’s first birthday, the Sims have settled into the neighborhood nicely and feel right at home. During the snowstorm in February the Sims’ neighbors lost power, and without hesitation, like any neighbor you would want to have, the Sims opened up their home and welcomed in the neighbors to stay until they could safely return home. Now with the sun warming up the streets, you can most likely find the family at Two Creeks on a Friday night - eating dinner at Dos Arroyos, grabbing an ice cream cone from Sweet Firefly, and enjoying the live music from Four Empty Spaces while watching Kennedy dance around. “She absolutely loves Four Empty Spaces! She lives for them - she asks weekly ‘When are we going to the band next? What's the band doing?’ That is her favorite part of the neighborhood...and counting the golf carts when we drive past the course on the way to school.” Kari and Colin laughed, cuddled up on the couch during a Zoom call after putting their two daughters to bed. With exciting experiences behind them and a lifetime of stories ahead, the two midwestern football fans are proud to be self-declared Texans and call Canyon Creek their home.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Echoes From The Canyon Summer! 2021
G
raduation. Seeing so many of our no-longer-youth transition in such a powerful and positive manner ignites simultaneous embers of nostalgia and of hopes for the future. The mental soundtrack that is annually summoned is that of The Byrds’ version of Pete Seeger’s song, Turn, Turn, Turn which may be the most ancient popular song lyrics ever written having been derived from Ecclesiastes. But I digress. Let’s now observe it from the Graduates’ perspective. Do you remember? Back when the world was an ocean of possibility yet was no tangible promise at all. When you would very occasionally hear the inaudible click of a metaphorical closing door but were blissfully unaware of what it actually meant. When you forgot there was a rearview mirror looking back because your gaze was so enthusiastically riveted on the shiny fun new things approaching in the windshield. When the shadows were filled with mystery and the streetlights hummed in anticipation of the evening’s adventure. When the end of a glorious endless summer was so far away it couldn’t be seen with telescope or calendar. Well, they are out front, engines idling, honking the horn for you to join them. It’s time for a road trip. Pack light, be present and embrace the moment of the now in this journey of the mind and spirit and o’ the places you’ll go. During those parental moments when the nostalgia threatens to overtake the hope, view it through their eyes. And rejoice. Kudos to our HOA Crime Watch Director, Sharon Odell and our Canyon Creek Crime Watch Patrol Director, Gary Henderson. We are the 1970’s and 1990’s Dallas Cowboys of Crime Watch but we can always use more cornerbacks patrolling our secondary. A new manner of engaging is the Dog Watch Program which provides a spiffy bandana for you and your fourlegged friend to both stroll and deter criminality. The whole idea is to make the ne’er-do-wells calculate that Canyon Creek is not the place to ply their wicked trade. 20

Moms Club
T
he Canyon Creek Moms Club is a neighborhood-based group of moms established in 2005 who have come together to provide one another friendship and support. We are a diverse group that includes a mix of moms who live in the Canyon Creek, Prairie Creek, or Cottonwood Creek neighborhoods, work outside of the home, in the home, or stay at home, and have children of all ages. We have a wide range of annual events and activities including playdates, a monthly Moms Night Out, community service opportunities, and seasonal family parties including a Fall Festival, Holiday Party, Spring Fling, and more! Despite the many challenges presented by COVID-19, we have been able to continue supporting our community by coordinating meals for new moms in the neighborhood, clothing and backpack
drives for the RISD Clothes Closet, and a toy drive for Toys for Tots Collin County. We have also come up with some creative ideas to stay connected including outdoor movie nights, a neighborhood wine walk, and many other outdoor, socially-distanced events! There really is a place for all neighborhood moms in the Canyon Creek Moms Club. Our goal is to help ALL moms on their journey through motherhood, and we hope you will join us if you haven’t already! Does Car Insurance Cover Pothole Damage?

otholes are a fact of life on the road, especially during the winter and early spring months. Harsh weather conditions (particularly freeze and thaw cycles) increase the likelihood of potholes, according to AccuWeather.com. If you have collision coverage, you may be able to make a claim on your car insurance policy to help cover sudden, accidental damage to your car from hitting a pothole. HOW CAN HITTING A POTHOLE DAMAGE YOUR CAR? The Car Care Council says that potholes can damage your steering, suspension and alignment systems. Driving over a pothole can also cause damage to your vehicle's tires and rims. Some signs of pothole-related damage may include loss of control of the car, pulling in one direction, uneven tire wear, low tire pressure, bulges in the sidewalls and dents in the tire rims, adds the organization. HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM INSURED FOR POTHOLE DAMAGE? Hitting a pothole with your car may be considered a single-vehicle accident. So, you may be able to make an insurance claim for pothole damage with your insurance company if you have collision coverage. Keep in mind that if you file a collision coverage claim for pothole damage, that claim will go on

your insurance record. Claim frequency may affect your auto insurance rates, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. Read your policy documents carefully or ask your agent to understand the coverages in your auto insurance policy and whether pothole damage is covered. Some cities, like Chicago and New York, may also offer limited compensation for pothole damage that happened within certain jurisdictions, according to the Insurance Information Institute. HOW DOES COLLISION COVERAGE WORK FOR POTHOLE DAMAGE? Collision coverage helps pay to repair damage to your car if you collide with another vehicle or object. If you hit a pothole big enough to cause front-end damage, your collision coverage may help pay for repairs. But remember, you'd be responsible for your deductible first — the amount you must pay before your insurer will pay for a covered claim. You can typically choose your own deductible when you buy collision coverage. If your car is damaged after hitting a pothole, it's a good idea to get a few estimates for repairs. If the cost to repair the damage is less than your auto policy's deductible, it would make more sense to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket. Also keep in mind that your insurer will only pay up to the coverage limit
