7 Essential Tasks to Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Tell us your names and your pet’s name.
Ken, Sally, Connor, & Shadow Finley is our pet.
What breed is your pet?
Sheltie
How did you get your pet and how long have you had him or her?
She was born on October 9, 2017. Her sister (Chloe Koen) lives two streets over and when her new family posted pictures we asked if she had any siblings and they said she had one left. We contacted the family in West, Texas and drove down that weekend to pick her up. Connor had been asking for a dog every day for years and we surprised him by telling him we were driving to meet some friends. He asked to pull over at the gas station for a break and it just so happened we were meeting our new fur baby. Santa Claus got out of the car and gave him a box and told him to open it and Shadow was inside. Connor wasn’t quite sure she belonged to him and how Santa knew we were there and to bring a puppy. He was in shock most of the ride home and we had to remind him that he needed to go take his restroom break.
Tell us about your pet: fun tricks, unique talents, quirky personality, etc.
Shadow loves other animals and people. If you are near the waterfall, you’ve probably caught her running to play with your dog or give you kisses. She is a herding dog so she loves chasing animals and kids. She chases Connor and his friends around the couch every day. She loves to play hide and seek. Connor will hide and she will sniff him out and bark to let him know he is caught. She loves to watch animal movies like Homeward Bound. She will sit and watch and entire show like she knows what they are saying and doing. Shadow is also an OU football fan. We think she is barking at the players because they look like animals that need to be herded on screen. She loves to play ball and is always bringing a ball or a baby of hers over to us to make us play. Every night, she tucks Connor into bed. If he covers his head with a blanket, she attacks until he is found under the covers and then stares at him until he is still and quiet so she can go to bed.
How long have you lived in Canyon Creek?
We moved into Canyon Creek in 2003 from Dallas, because we loved the neighborhood. We knew when we had kids we wanted to be near the trees, the waterfall, and walking distance to donuts and (then) sno-cone stand.
What do you love most about living in the Canyon Creek?
Being in the city without feeling like you are in the city. Once you are home, you don’t have to leave the neighborhood -- great schools, good restaurants, outdoor activities, and nice people.
Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about your pet?
Her favorite book is Shadow’s Adventures in Petlandia where she runs away to be a YouChew star in Hollywoof. She will sit next to Connor and listen if he reads it to her.

CROSSFIT 1310

What is your name and the name of your business? How long have you been in business?
We are the Clasby Family; Dwight, Brooklyn, Frog and KK. We own CrossFit 1310 (not related to 1310 the ticket!). Turns out coming up with a CrossFit name is quite the challenge – so we resorted to our old garage code. We started in our garage YEARS ago, but officially began 1310 out of our garage in 2016.
Tell us about your business.
We are a family CrossFit gym that focuses on driving community, wellness, and longevity. We provide a fun, safe, and encouraging place to workout in a group, while getting in shape, meeting goals, meeting neighbors, and building community. Not all CrossFit gyms are the same – and when we started this gym, we wanted to focus on families and all ages while providing a fun place to come work out as a group. While we offer personal training and sport specific training, our core focus is our group classes. You warm up together, you focus on skill/strength together, and you complete a workout of the day together as a class. No workout is ever the same – the goal is “functional fitness” – meaning we want you to be able to pick up your grand kids and play on the floor with them as you get older. We also love to do social events, happy hours, and family outings together. Our favorite community events are our free family workouts every Saturday at 9:15 am and our community Thanksgiving Family Sportsball at Canyon Creek Park the Friday after Thanksgiving!
While we currently operate CrossFit 1310 out of our location in the heart of the “wine and donut district” (the suite between The Wine Authority and Bunkies Donuts), starting in our garage here in the neighborhood has helped build our largest clientele. Most days we have 4-5 classes that are made up mostly of members that live in the ‘hood!
When we were graciously given the opportunity to open this gym, we wanted to be very deliberate to create an atmosphere that challenges our members to go beyond their limits, while focusing on the community. We incorporate our core values into every aspect of our business – strength, community, faith and fun!
What inspired you to do what you do?
Brooklyn started CrossFit in 2010 to lose weight and gain strength back after a horrible car accident. While I refused to join initially, I soon jumped in and fell in love with it. We both started at CrossFit Richardson and their love for others is what really inspired us to open 1310 in our neighborhood. There isn’t anything better than a true community and we were blessed to have that (and still do) at CFR. Everyone needs a community that they can workout with, backpack with, vacation with, raise kids with and just live life with.
While living in East Richardson and even when we moved to Canyon Creek, we’ve always had friends in the neighborhood work out with us. At one point, we had friends move back to Plano to open CrossFit 972 and asked us to coach and help them open it up – and we did! Between the impact that CFR had on us personally, the passion we found in coaching at CrossFit 972, and the community we saw growing in our own garage - it made sense! We love coaching and encouraging, and starting a gym seemed like the next step.

Tells us a favorite story or two about your business.
We love our members! Our 5:30 am class is quite the treat if you can ever check it out. Our members become family – hosting baby showers for each other, helping them move, helping them promote and grow their businesses, and just helping each other out. But when we abruptly had to move out of our garage – our members rallied around us. Without us knowing, Christian painted our new space, and they all surprised us on the last day of our last garage workout with a trailer to go pick up the equipment for the new space (we thought we were going to have to do it all our selves). They helped us move all the equipment, install the flooring, rig and more!
This past Christmas we weren’t able to get together for a Christmas party for our members. We ended up hosting a New Years Day Brunch at our house and it was absolutely epic. We fed over 130 people, including spouses and kids. It was truly an amazing day being able to spend time together! And we’re doing it again this year- its open to the community!!
How long have you lived in Canyon Creek?
We moved to Canyon Creek in 2014 from east Richardson – Yale Park. We quickly got plugged in and rarely leave Canyon Creek. Well, Dwight might not even go further than a 400m radius of the house/gym. In fact, you’ve probably seen him crossing Lookout five or six times a day with a cup of coffee. Brooklyn travels for work, so she goes a little further than 800m. But when we are in town, we do not venture too far. Everything we need is right here!
What brought you to Canyon Creek?
Bad financial advice. Kidding. Kind of. We put our house in Yale Park up for sale and it sold in a day. We originally had plans to move Colorado, which obviously changed. We then met a couple we really liked and thought were really cool. Next thing you know, we bought our current home, which is four houses down from said couple! It worked out and here we are. Added bonus, so many friends from our church, Watermark, live in the neighborhood too. We cannot imagine living anywhere else.
What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek?
Our community is truly amazing. Not just the people, but the whole area. People really care about one another and we have made the most amazing friendships in such a short time. We love that people casually stop by our house and that we can walk everywhere. We have an open invite for anyone to come hang out at our Turquoise Table! Our favorite places to go in the ‘hood are Frankie’s, Canyon Creek Country Club, Sweet Fire Fly, Shady’s, and Pearl Cup. We also frequent Catalyst Sport and Spine, The Wine Authority and Barton Howell is our dry cleaner! We have four huskies that you’ve probably seen us with, so we are also frequent visitors at Canyon Creek Animal Clinic. We love Dino – he helps us all the time. We have no reason to go further than a golf cart will take us! Literally, no wonder Dwight does not travel further than 400 meters. Oh, and we LOVE HALLOWEEN in the ‘hood!
Tell us about your family.
If Dwight is not at the gym coaching or working out, he’s at home making coffee and taking care of the four fur babies.
Brooklyn handles PR for the gym. She also has worked for Kronos for 6 years, currently as the Director of Sales for Food Service. When not on the road for work, she is busy helping with the gym, the dogs and planning vacations for the family.
Frog, 19, is wrapping up his first semester at Collin and applied at several Fire Departments in the area. You might have had him as a server at the Country Club or ringing you up at the checkout line at Tom Thumb. Currently, Frog is working at Fat Straws on Campbell.
KK, 14, is a Freshman at North Dallas Adventist Academy. She just wrapped up her first semester at this new school and she couldn’t be happier with the amazing kids and families there! She loves dogs, tennis, volleyball, serving and her friends. She is also an excellent babysitter!
And don’t forget our fur kids– Snickers, Skittles, Sota and Drizzle.
Anything else you’d love for your neighbors to know about your business or you?
Saturdays at 9:15, we host our free community class. We’d love for anyone to come check it out. Bring the family – all ages; everything is TRULY scalable. We talk to people everyday about CrossFit – encouraging all skill levels and all ages to give it a try. Whether you just want mobility or to better your golf game, there is a fit for you! Anything you’ve seen on TV? Forget it – and come check us out!
Makenzie Rogers

Tell us your name, what school you currently attend, and what year you are in school.
I am Makenzie Rogers, I am a senior year at JJ Pearce High School
What other schools have you attended?
I went to Canyon Creek Elementary and North Junior High.
Tell us what sports or activities you were involved in and why you enjoy it.
I enjoy volleyball because it is a team sport. It has allowed me over the years to build great relationships, develop skills that both enhanced my physical abilities and social abilities, and taught me the importance of working alongside others with one common goal.
Tell us your honors and awards in school.
First Team All District , Academic All District, RISD First Team All City, Academic All City, MVP for JV year, NHS, and Health Science club.
What’s your favorite subject in school (your sport doesn’t count!)? Tell us about your plans after graduation.
My favorite subject in school is a nontraditional one. I am currently in a practicum of Health Science and will earn a certification as a Patient Care Technician. My class is two periods long and is at Methodist Hospital on Campbell. This ties into my plans after graduation. I plan on attending a four year college to get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing and becoming a Labor and delivery nurse or a Newborn Nursery
Nurse.
Outside of schools and sports, what do you do for fun, hobbies, work, etc.?
Outside of school I love to be around family and friends, go to my aunt and uncle's ranch, hang around in a hammock reading a good book, baking, babysitting for families around the neighborhood.
How long have you lived in Canyon Creek?
I have lived in Canyon Creek since the third grade, so about 9 years now.
Canyon Creek?
Canyon Creek is such a friendly neighborhood with people always outside walking or riding their bikes. I also love that we have restaurants and an ice cream shop right in the middle of it
Tells us a favorite story or two about a big moment or fun moment playing your sport.
This year we beat our long-time rival, Lake Highlands, which secured us 1st in District. My junior year we went to Disney World for a tournament which was so incredible. The days we weren't playing we were at Disney having the time of our lives. It's always fun to get to bond with teammates off the court.
Share with us a funny or awesome story of living in Canyon Creek.
Well as people who live here know, near Fall Creek and Collins there is a very steep hill, especially for an 8 year old...on a bike...going as fast as she can. You can imagine what might have happened next and I may or may not still have the scars from where my arms met the sidewalk
pavement after I lost control.
Anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about you?
I appreciate that people in the neighborhood come and support our team at games and they
