Canyon Creek Wine Society –Fine Wines and Fine Times! by Micah Scrogginthorpe
In our second series on clubs and organizations here in Canyon Creek, we are pleased to present ‘The Canyon Creek Wine Society’! Please don’t let the name fool you! Society is not pronounced with
As the evening progresses, the host will bring out and serve a featured wine typically with a higher price point ($50) than what has been served earlier in the evening. Guests are given some background one’s nose in the air and an ascot to match their favorite grape. In other words, you won’t find any sour grapes in this bunch!
On the contrary, the group is comprised of friends and neighbors here in Canyon Creek, and surrounding neighborhoods, who hold monthly meet and greet wine parties on the second Saturday of every month at a pre-selected host’s home. Each attendee brings a moderately priced bottle of wine and perhaps a complimentary dish. Guests are asked to put a five dollar donation in the kitty for the next month’s host. Hosting is entirely voluntary and is funded by the collection of donations from the previous month.
The parties are often themed, and guests sample a variety of wines paired with theme centric foods. Some previous themes have included Chocolate Lovers Night, The Best of Texas, the Mad Hatter Wine Party, and parties centric to the host’s ancestral country. At some events there may be a special fundraiser held to help with neighbors in need. Past fundraisers have included helping last year’s victims of house fires and unexpected events. There are often games, plenty of food, taste tests, and of course a lot of fermented grape juice!
No prior knowledge about wine is necessary and no one is scolded for using the wrong glass! information about the featured wine as an introduction as everyone shares a toast and enjoys.
The founders of the Wine Society, Zech and Kim Lumpkin, started the Canyon Creek Wine Society in the fall of 2014 with a small group of friends. Since that time, the number has grown to over 250 members but don’t worry, the monthly parties typically have an average of 40 members and thus there are no Roman Banquets!
Every one is welcomed regardless of your knowledge, or lack thereof, related to wine. Zech says, “The Wine Society is more about meeting your neighbors and making new friends. There’s just something nice about bonding with friends over a glass of wine.” Many great friendships have indeed been made and that alone is as fine as the wine that brought them about!
