FALL 2010 Welcome to our new Parks & Recreation ANNUAL GUIDE We have reformatted and updated our guide to better serve the community. The Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Department will now be producing an Annual Guide which will come out in the fall, plus a number of supplements that will come out at additional times throughout the year. We hope you enjoy this new format as we work towards providing you with our most current information, up-to-date information.

The Annual Guide will feature a variety of annual activities, special event calendar, contact information, facility offerings, registration information, Parks & Recreation information and of course exciting programs for all ages!

The Seasonal Supplements will be produced an additional four times a year, providing information on current upcoming programs, camps, and special events.

The Ucluelet Parks & Recreation Department will be focusing on a number of different aspects of recreation and community services over the next year. Some of our objectives will be: • • • •

Ucluelet’s Recreation Access Program (RAP) is designed to provide support through coupons, team scholarships, and reduction of program fees.

KIDSPORT FUND - SO ALL KIDS CAN PLAY!

We believe that no child should be left on the sidelines and all should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sport. KidSport provides support to children in order to remove financial barriers that prevent them from playing organized sport.

CHILDRENS FITNESS TAX CREDIT

The Government of Canada now allows parents to claim a maximum of $500 per year for eligible fees paid for each child who is under 16 at any time during the year to participate in an eligible sports/fitness program. A number of programs offered by the Recreation Department will fit into this criterion.

In order to qualify for the tax credit a program must be: • Ongoing: either a minimum of eight weeks duration

with a minimum of one session per week, or in the case

of children’s camps, five consecutive days, • Supervised, • Suitable for children, and • All of the activities must include a significant amount

of physical activity that contributes to cardio-res

piratory endurance plus one or more of: muscular

strength, muscular endurance, flexibility or balance.

UCLUELET COMMUNITY CENTRE 500 Matterson Drive

Providing a home to recreation & conference services for Ucluelet, this flagship facility opened in April 2010. The UCC provides Ucluelet and the surrounding area with a comprehensive recreation and support facility, which caters to the universal approach of providing services for all ages with a focus on family. It offers a wide variety of programs such as cultural, educational, fitness, sports, crafts, art, lectures, and workshops. Larger events such as weddings, funerals, fundraisers, theatre performances, movie viewings and art shows can also take place in the facility.

Multi Purpose Activity Rooms With one as a dedicated arts and crafts room, these three rooms are rented out for events, meetings, and classes, as well as used for Parks and Recreation programs.

Teen Room This room is dedicated to providing youth a safe productive environment to “hang out� and socialize with friends as well as to offer teen specific programming.

Fitness Studio With a wood sprung floor, this studio can be rented out for fitness classes and workshops, as well as small events.

Main Hall This room can be rented out for larger events and performances, or used for general programming when a larger space is required. It has a sprung wood floor, change rooms which come equipped with showers, and a full stage.

Kitchen Attached to the Main Hall is a full kitchen featuring two gas ranges which is used for both teaching and catering.

Community Room Set up with sloped fixed seating and full audio visual, this room is used for lecture series, council meetings, court, small musical performances, Toast Masters and movies.

The UAC hall provides a more intimate space for smaller events or activities.

Small kitchen facility and stage are also highlights of this space.

PARKS

Ucluelet boasts a number of parks throughout the District. We are currently conducting an inventory of our parks, playgrounds, trails and green spaces.

From this we will be creating an overall Parks Plan to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the community and further providing quality parks services. Plans include a new tot park, finalizing the BMX track and upgrading the skateboard park.

Cancellations

Sometimes excellent courses with talented instructors are cancelled if you wait until the last minute to register. We like to give our instructors as much notice as possible so that they can be properly prepared for their classes. *Register at least one week in advance of the start date to avoid disappointment. Seriously.

Refunds

We will be more than happy to give you a full refund or immediate credit if we have to cancel a course. If you cancel your spot prior to the course we will refund or immediately credit you less 10%. However, if you miss a course altogether and do not give us 48 hours notice, no refund will be issued.

Swimming Programs

Swim Lesson Descriptions Parent & Tot Program 4mo-3yrs Learn with a parent or caregiver activities taught through songs and play.

STARFISH - About facility orientation, active supervision, safe entries and exits, staying warm, choking prevention, supports and holds for the caregiver, buoyancy and movement 4-18 months DUCK - Active supervision, Stop Look Ask!, shallow water entries and exits, PFD and me, when and how to get help, choking response, rhythmic breathing, buoyancy and movement, submersion (optional). 18-30 months SEA TURTLE - Stop Look Ask!, jumping into chest deep water, PFD and me, assisted front and back floats, assisted front swims. 30-36 months

Preschool Program 4-5yrs SALAMANDER - Learn about active supervision, Stop Look Ask an adult, jump into chest deep water, buoyant objects, rhythmic breathing, front float and recovery, front glides with kick, and a distance swim of 2m.

SUNFISH - Learn about safe entries, surface support, floats and recovery in deep water, front and back and side glides with kick, roll over glides, and a distance swim of 5 metres.

CROCODILE - Learn about changing direction in deep water, jumping into deep water, surface support, calling for help, glides with kick, front and back swims for 5 metres, and a distance swim of 10 metres.

WHALE - Learn about when and where it is safe to swim, jump into deep water and tread water for 20 seconds, stop throw and call for help, front and back swims for 7m, as well as a 10 metre continuous swim.

Swim Kids Program 6yrs+ SWIM KIDS LEVEL 1 - Comfort in the water through basic floatation, movement and breathing skills, basic knowledge skills and attitudes necessary to prepare, stay safe and survive in, on, and around the water.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 2 - Site rules, intro to PFD, assisted deep water activities, unassisted floats and glides, 10 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 3 - When and where to swim, deep end floats, surface support for 20 seconds, sitting dives, front, back and side glides, front crawl and a 15 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 4 - Self-safety, how to contact EMS, safe diving, kneeling dives, surface support for 45 seconds, front crawl and a 25 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 5 - How to be a safe boater, staying warm, cold water safety, treading water for 1 minute, stride dives, front and back crawl, intro to whip kick and a 50 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 6 - Causes of boating accidents, outdoor ice safety, victim recognition and simulation, throwing assists, tread water for 90 seconds, front dives, front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, and a distance swim of 75 metres.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 7 - Airway obstruction, choking rescues, reaching and throwing assists, sculling, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and whip kick on your front, as well as a 150 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 8 - Hypothermia, dangers of open water, rescue breathing, surface dives, stride entries, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, and a distance swim of 300 metres.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 9 - Wise choices and peer influence, boating regulations, self ice rescue, surface dives, shallow dives, front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke, as well as a 400 metre distance swim.

SWIM KIDS LEVEL 10 - Introduction to butterfly and scissor kick, fitness, sun safety, rescue of others from the ice, surface dives, as well as a 500 metre endurance swim.

FALL 2010 Our preschool programs aim to provide safe and fun learning experiences through play. They offer an opportunity for your child to participate in a variety of teacher-led and child initiated activities. Emphasis on socialization, creativity and fun!

LITTLE PURPLE DRAGONS

Age: 4+ Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu is a martial art, modern in concept yet ancient in origin. Don Jitsu Ryu blends Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, and Kung Fu. Children will learn discipline, confidence, and respect while learning basic punching and kicking techniques.

PRESCHOOL DANCE CLASSES

Participants will explore basic movement skills through all sounds of music! Fine and large motor skills, from hand and feet co-ordination to skipping, bouncing, jumping, hopping, galloping, rolling and twirling. Preschool classes develop musical awareness, expression and creativity. Themed classes encourage class participation, focus and confidence that prepare students for entry to the Pre-Primary and primary dance levels. Students will explore with the use of scarves, streamers, wands, balls, bean bags, hoops and instruments. All preschool dance classes taught by Gabby Springett.

PARENT & TOT MOVEMENT KIDS KALEID! Age: 3-5 This class uses imagination and simple techniques to create your tot’s masterpiece. Age: 3-5 This popular playtime program will allow your tot to explore, create, learn and have fun in a safe and nurturing environment. Lisa and Yvonne will help children establish a daily routine consisting of story-time, show n’ tell, Morning Circle, and free play. Children will take advantage of different “play centres”, each designed to build and enhance fine motor skills as well as establish group dynamics.

Parents will receive a monthly newsletter with Playschool updates including upcoming field trips, special events and monthly birthday parties.

This is an ideal environment for your tot to build confidence, be creative and prepare for Kindergarten.

We have lots of equipment and space to contribute: We have balls to kick, bikes to ride, lego to build and much more! The program is completely free play for preschoolers and visiting time for parents or caregivers. A great opportunity for your child to socialize and play with other pre-school kids.

Ages: 14-18 Pete Ashbee, one of the featured local artists at this year’s Carving on the Edge Festival, is offering this one-day carving workshop for youth ages 14-18. This is a hands-on workshop in which students will learn how to use basic carving tools and will work on a project.

Instructor Ian Shu has been train-

ing in Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu since 1996, Prior to that having studied Shotokan Karate, boxing and gymnastics.

He received his 1st degree blackbelt in 2002, and Instructor certification in 2003.

He has trained, taught and competed in Canada, the USA, and Trinidad and Tobago. Instructor Ian just returned from Trinidad where he was inducted into the Caribbean Martial Arts Hall Of Fame as Instructor of the year. In 2011 he plans to test for his next black belt as well as travel to Japan with Professor Don Jacob and Master Billy Blanks.

Ancient in origin yet modern in concept, Don Jitsu Ryu is one of the most practical, effective and complete martial arts fighting systems in the world today. It blends Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Aikido and weaponry. In May, Purple Dragon founder Don Jacob visited Ucluelet for Grading and a training seminar.

Shortly afterward, Instructor Ian accompanied 3 of his students to the Purple Dragon World Headquarters in Trinidad for the 40th Anniversary tournament and Hall of Fame Awards.

There, Instructor Ian was inducted into the Purple Dragon Hall of Fame for his work and committment to the organization. He and student Skyla Witt brought home silver & bronze medals .

Ballet

classes will cover the basics of ballet following the Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus. In all ballet classes, students will work on strengthening their flexibility, co-ordinate steps, patterns, and changes of direction. In the more advanced classes we will continue to work on mastering the technique of more challenging ballet steps, and continue to improve on progressive dance movements.

GABRIELLE SPRINGETT is a Royal Academy of Dance certified teacher and has been dancing for the past 27 years. She has danced with such studios as Les Grandes Ballets Canadien Co in Montreal, the George Randolf School in Toronto and Centre State Perfmance Co. in Vancovuer. She started out with ballet at a young age and soon branched out into modern dance and jazz. In 1995, Gabrielle moved from Cambridge, Ont. to Vancouver where she earned her teacher training certificate and began her career as a dance instructor.

She has been teaching in Ucluelet since moving here in 2003.

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) is a non-profit organization based out of London, England. It is known worldwide for its solid structure in developing the fundamentals of classical ballet.

and levels, develop students' physical skills, stamina, creativity, expression and musicality using a range of sounds and musical styles. This strong foundation prepares students for a successful transition to ballet and other dance genres.

These levels are appropriate for girls and boys 5-8 years old.

Graded Syllabi, Royal Academy of Dance Grades 1 - 6 Award, provide a broad practical dance education, progressively developing the technical, musical and performance skills of the student. They incorporate Classical Ballet, Free Movement and Character.

Classical ballet is the core of the syllabus. Free Movement incorporates movements in common with dance genres such as Natural Movement, Contemporary and Classical Greek. Character is the theatrical presentation of national dance using ethnic dance and music, which has been freely adapted for the theatre. Three styles have been selected for study: Hungarian, Russian and Polish. These levels are appropriate for students from the age of six years and upwards, and can provide challenging and rewarding training to the end of high school.

Bobby Lax moved across the country to Tofino, B.C. five years ago where he began an unconventional culinary path working on a gourmet food truck.

Cooking directly under the watchful eye of CIA grad Lisa Ahier at SoBo, he had the privilege of working with some of B.C.'s best ingredients while in a very fun environment. Bobby's desire to work with new fresh and regional products then led him to the Bountiful Okanagan where he found Joy Road Catering.

This fall, he will split his time between teaching cooking classes, working on an oyster farm, helping out with the newly formed Ucluelet and Tofino Culinary Guild & cooking for friends at any opportunity.

Our Bears

NEVER store garbage outside - store indoors in a bear-proof facility.

NEVER store fish/meat or other food in outdoor fridges or freezers.

Bring pet food and feeding dishes inside.

Dispose of all fish offal in a bear resistant container.

Burn barbeques clean after each use. Clean and store them covered out of the wind, preferably indoors (without propane tank).

Do not use any type of birdfeeder in bear country. As an alternative, plant red or pink native flowers known to appeal to birds or use birdbaths to attract birds without attracting bears.

Do not leave garbage, groceries, animal feed, coolers, or any odorous item in your vehicle or in the back of a pick-up truck. Bears can easily pry open car/truck windows and doors to access food.

Do not feed bears; feeding wildlife in BC is illegal and subject to fines up to $50,000.

Do not yell, throw objects or otherwise harass bears in their natual setting.

Do not stop your vehicle to view roadside bears.

Our Learn to Skate Programs are a fun-filled way to introduce your child to the basics of ice skating.

Our instructors are qualified to teach all levels of the Premier’s Sport Awards Program.

Friday night lesson package consist of five (5), 30 minute instructional periods. Cost is $37.50. Registration fee includes admission to the skating session for lesson participant only. Skate rentals extra - $2.50 pair.

Participants must wear safety helmets during the lessons.

TIM BITS Hockey Program Preschoolers 3 - 5 years old

This program offers a great opportunity for preschoolers 3 to 5 years old to experience a fun and exciting introduction to ice hockey. The program will be held during the Tot’s Hockey session on Monday afternoons. Eight, 45 minute sessions will focus on hockey basics and our instructors will present the program in a “fun and games” format.

Ucluelet Family Ties is a program open to all expectant parents

and new parents in Ucluelet and area. We're located in the Coastal Communities Services Hub, part of the new Ucluelet Community Centre!

Family Ties runs a weekly drop in at the Hub, where parents can gather to chat, visit and participate in a discussion on a topic of interest. There's snacks, toys for little ones, an outreach worker and the Public Health Nurse is also on hand. Got a question? There's an answer; from the nurse, the outreach worker, or an experienced parent in the group. Got a concern? The outreach worker can help gather information, attend appointments, follow up with you. Celebrating a milestone? Baby's first smile, rolling over, first tooth? Come share with the group!

Expectant parents have an added challenge living on the coast, because birth services must be accessed outside our communities. Family Ties can be a source of support before and after your little one arrives. Prenatal classes are arranged as needed; if you're expecting please let us know if you'd like to attend a series. Information is tailored to west coast parents' needs.

Experienced parents are welcome too; come visit, chat, share your wisdom!
