W

e start the fall season with a renewed energy, given the number of changes that have happened within our organization. While we know there will be challenges, and issues will arise, we have regained our positive outlook, and are moving forward with smiles on our faces!

April celebrated her official 10 year anniversary with the District in June this year! Although that is her “official” anniversary, April worked for the department in temporary positions from 1998 and at one time worked for the community school. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, though it’s doubly hard to remember how we made do without her beforehand.

April is such a huge asset to our department, we will miss her (again) when she leaves for a maternity leave in November. We wish her all the best, and know she will enjoy some quality time with daughter Citra and the new baby. Oh, and Jean-Paul! Laura Lunty will be filling April’s big shoes, and we know she’ll do a super job.

I did a quick scan through the photographs of April 10 years ago, which was quite nostalgic. Ten years ago, we did not have a digital camera.

Ten years ago, we were just finishing up the new playground at the Village Green, and the section of MUP across from the Esso was being constructed.

Ten years ago we were copying, hand folding and stapling our brochures.

Ten years ago, our Skatepark was still a paved eyesore and there was no Community Hall. Ten years ago, Klee Wyck Day Care had closed its doors.

Then I started thinking about what it was like when I first started working as the Recreation Coordinator – 15 hours a week, $500 a month, way back in 1992. With no real budget. In fact, because we had no budget, we built our very first soccer goals out of plumbing pipe and fish netting…

Scattered throughout the brochure are a few of the pictures we stumbled across in our search. We hope you enjoy them. We’ve come a long way!

You can register for programs at the District Office. The District Office is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our programs.

Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff/instructor changes should we need to expand the program.

Sorry, the Course is Full Some classes fill quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes.

Changed your plans?

A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal information prior to the course start date unless specified otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Office to apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application.

Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofino time”).

Tofino Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Office. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers!

Healthy Babies Program Family Ties is a program that offers information and support to help you have the healthiest baby possible. Weekly drop-in sessions provide topics and guest speakers of interest to families. Everything from nutrition to childbirth to adjusting to parenthood, to infant massage. STRONG START Do you have a young child that is not yet in Kindergarten? School District #70 offers free parent and child StrongStart programs in Ucluelet, Tofino, Esowista and Opitsaht. StrongStart is a drop in program that stresses fun and learning together. Please contact Wickaninnish Elementary School 250.725.3254 for for info on our Tofino program. Participants need to provide a birth certificate upon registration with SD70 at the school. Program runs in Room 105.

Helmets for Skiers and Boarders Skiing has evolved into a faster sport than it was 10 years ago, and snowboarding has become very popular. As a result, more skiers and boarders protect themselves by wearing a helmet.

During the mid to late 1990s, ski helmet sales increased 10-fold in six years. It is no longer as rare to see people wearing helmets on the slopes as it was even a couple of years ago.

Serious head injuries account for less than three per cent of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the leading cause of death, and the injuries can have lifelong consequences.

A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre was published in the October 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma. It found that collisions with trees were the most common cause of head injury and were responsible for the most severe injuries. Snowboarders were three times more likely to suffer a head injury than skiers.

Roots of EmpathyPROGRAM Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown dramatic effect in reducing levels of aggression among schoolchildren by raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy.

At the heart of the program are a neighbourhood infant and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks over the school year.

A trained ROE Instructor coaches students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. In this experiential learning, the baby is the “Teacher” and a lever, which the instructor uses to help children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others.

This “emotional literacy” taught in the program lays the foundation for more safe and caring classrooms, where children are the “Changers”.

They are more competent in understanding their own feelings and the feelings of others (empathy) and are therefore less likely to physically, psychologically and emotionally hurt each other through bullying and other cruelties.

In the ROE program children learn how to challenge cruelty and injustice. Messages of social inclusion and activities that are consensus building contribute to a culture of caring that changes the tone of the classroom. The ROE Instructor also visits before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. Research results from national and international evaluations of ROE indicate significant reductions in aggression and increases in pro-social behaviour.

Tofino Parks & Recreation is looking for Roots of Empathy Families for the 2010/2011 school year. Babies should be between 4-6 months in October 2010.

Introductory diving program for kids! Ocean Planet dive school instructors will walk your child through the basics of diving in the safety and comfort of a swimming pool setting. Participants will learn about scuba diving safety, diving equipment and diving practices and experience firsthand the thrill of breathing underwater. Dive class takes place in West Coast Motel Pool. We are partnering with our friends at Ucluelet Parks & Recreation on this program, so the program will be filled with a mix of Tofino and Ucluelet kids. Tuff Boys Club is just for boys, grades 5-7.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a new sport or physical activity each week.

This strong foundation prepares students for a successful transition to ballet and other dance genres. Children should have completed previous dance training before enrolling in this level. First time dancers should complete the Preprimary class first.

Ready, set, tap! This is a fun new class for children aged 7 and up. Tap shoes are provided for the tap class. A nonrefundable $10 rental fee for the 2010/2011 dance season is due on the first day of classes.

Grade 3 Ballet 9 YEARS & UP

Blaze, Andrea and Katie in an early Whalefest Parade.

Class will cover the basics of ballet following the Royal Academy of Dance ballet Syllabus. Students will work on strengthening their flexibility, co-ordinate of steps, patterns, and changes of direction. In this more advanced classes we will continue to work on mastering the technique of more challenging ballet steps, and continue to improve on progressive dance movements. **This year students will have the opportunity to take part in Royal Academy of dace evaluations which will take place in Late November. Ian Shu Instructor Ian Shu has been training in Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu since 1996, prior to that having studied Shotokan Karate, boxing and gymnastics. He received his 1st degree blackbelt in 2002, and Instructor certification in 2003. He has trained, taught and competed in Canada, the USA, and Trinidad and Tobago. Instructor Ian just returned from Trinidad where he was inducted into the Caribbean Martial Arts Hall Of Fame as Instructor of the year. In 2011 he plans to test for his next black belt as well as travel to Japan with Professor Don Jacob and Master Billy Blanks.

Bobby Lax Bobby Lax moved across the country to the beautiful village of Tofino, B.C. five years ago where he began his unconventional culinary path by working on a gourmet food truck. Cooking directly under the watchful eye of CIA (Culinary Institute of America) grad Lisa Ahier at SoBo, he had the privilege of working with some of B.C.’s best ingredients while in a very fun environment. Bobby’s desire to work with fresh and regional products then led him to the Bountiful Okanagan where he found Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart of Joy Road Catering.

Twice a week they would cook an alfresco five course dinner for up to 30 people at one long table, overlooking a vineyard.

After seeing the inextricable link between food and wine in the Okanagan he began working in the vineyard and winery at JoieFarm, where he gained a wealth of practical wine knowledge. This fall he will split his time between teaching Coastal Cooking Classes, sourcing honest food for the newly formed Tofino and Ucluelet Culinary Guild (TUCG) and cooking for friends or strangers at any given opportunity.

Bobby runs his Coastal Cooking Classes just about every Friday Night in the Tofino Community Hall kitchen from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. His classes have included many mouthwatering themes, including For the Love of Shellfish, A Season’s Feast, Grapes and Grub, Five Easy Ways with BC Fish and even a parent-child cooking class, The Apple & the Tree. Prices for classes vary depending on cost of supplies, but usually range between $40-$60 per person. COPS FOR CANCER – TOUR DE ROCK

OCTOBER

The tour is a team of police officers who gather from up and down Vancouver Island volunteering their time, cycling as a team, from one end of the Vancouver Island to the other, over 15 days. They stop in just about every community to raise money for childhood cancers. Last year, the tour collected $1.8 million, making it a record year for the Island as well as the second largest fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. Tour de Rock will be in Tofino and Ucluelet Saturday, September 25th. Locals are invited to join the cyclists as they ride into town. Watch for details and anticipated Tour arrival times posted around town this September.

Constable Andy Rickaby was stationed in Tofino in the mid ‘90s. During his time here, Andy served on the Recreation Commission, was a dedicated soccer coach, and all round good guy. Let’s be sure to give Andy and the riders a big Tofino welcome!

WINTER COAT EXCHANGE

Kids grown out of their winter coats? Need a winter coat? The Winter Coat Exchange will give families and friends a chance to recycle their gently worn coats, and/or pick up a coat for the upcoming season. District staff are volunteering their time to sort and distribute coats. Drop off your clean coats at the District Office during the week of October 10, or at the Community Hall on Friday, October 15 between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Coat distribution will take place October 16, 2pm – 4pm at the Community Hall.

YOUTH MOVIE NIGHTS NOVEMBER THRU

Tofino Parks and Recreation is excited to offer teen movie nights throughout the winter.

Films will be featured monthly, starting in November and running until the end of February. Laura Lunty will be the projectionist for this series, and is open to youth input on film selections. Look for posters around town and at the high school in November!

Surfrider is an international environmental foundation dedicated to the “protection and enjoyment of the oceans, beaches and waves for all people.”

Jae Lazar Jae Lazar has been living in and loving Tofino for 18 years. She has been certified as a Personal Trainer through the provincial governing body, British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association. She has studied and practiced natural healing, in a variety of orientations for many years and also has a Reiki Master certification. Jae is passionate about ‘living’ fitness, and making exercise relevant and sustainable in a balanced and personal way. She is happy staying active outside in the fresh air most of her time with a variety of sports and activities. It is easy for Jae to get you stoked on adding more healthy activity to your life as well.

Nordic Walking involves walking with specialized poles both on and off road. The Nordic Walking Poles reduce stress on joints in the lower body by 30% and promote greater stability and balance and improve posture while walking. Create beautiful handmade cards that will be sure to impress everyone on your Christmas card list. All supplies provided. Card making guru Holly Cameron will show you how easy it is to make these cards. Three separate classes are offered this Fall. Take one class or all three.

In each class participants will make 12 cards, with 3-4 different designs each night. Participants taking all three classes should have 36 cards by December. To ensure your dog isn’t causing problems, please follow these guidelines: Do not allow your dog off-leash until you have a reliable recall; Keep your dog in sight and call it back when you see people approaching; Do not allow your dog to jump on people; Keep your dog on the trail; Don’t let your dog chase wildlife; Pick up after your dog; If you sense someone might be fearful, step to the edge of the trail and have your dog sit quietly while they walk by; If your dog is aggressive, keep it on a leash; Leave your dog at home if it’s in heat.

Centennial Park Raingarden

We’d really like to thank the many members of our community who have taken the time to bring our attention to an area of our parks that needs attention.

Summer is a time when our parks and public spaces need extra attention and we just can’t be everywhere at once. From letting us know about overflowing garbage, a broken flying fox, an unkempt cemetery, missing basketball nets, and more, THANK YOU for your help in managing our parks!

Working with Tofino Streamkeepers and our Public Works crew, a raingarden has been installed at Centennial Park!

This little garden will work to treat the street storm water runoff before it gets into the stream that we have been busy working to restore. Essentially, the rain will enter the garden through a culvert where it then gets directed around the garden which has been planted with plants and layered with soil and varying kinds of rock, thereby filtering the water before it enters the stream. Next steps are to install a bridge through the garden, establish a trail, and provide signage. The school students, who are such a big part of this project, will be thrilled at the progress we have made over the summer.

MUP We hope that by the time we go to press, the sharp corner issue at the Dolphin will have been addressed, with work scheduled to start last week of August or first week of September. We’ve heard a number of concerns about the yellow curbs. This was a requirement of Highways, and we will continue to try and work with them to remedy the situation. While this section of MUP should have been a simple project, a number of factors convened to make it the most challenging section of MUP we have experienced building. As a result, we are looking for MUP lovers to join us to create a MUP Advisory Committee. We know there are dedicated cyclists out there who could really assist us when it comes to handling some of these challenges, and we’d love to have you behind us! We are currently working on a grant to develop the MUP between Draeder Rd where the MUP currently ends, and Olson Rd. Basketball/Tennis Courts The lines on each court have been painted and look fantastic, particularly the basketball court! We’ve had great feedback on what a difference it has made. The practice board at the tennis court is overdue for replacement, scheduled to happen this fall.

And though we know we need new net winders, they just don’t fit into this year’s budget.

1431 Solar Shower We are excited to report that the new solar hot water shower at the 1431 Cox Bay washrooms has been a huge success. We have collected over $600 to date. We will soon be installing a privacy screen for your showering comfort.

Lighthouse Trail We are thrilled to announce that construction on the Lighthouse Trail will begin this fall! With funding through Service Canada’s Job Creation Program, and Resort Municipality Program, the trail will be a spectacular addition to our infrastructure. The trail was first mapped in 2002 and a competition was held to name the new trail.

Local girl Hayley Clarkson was the winner, and the Lighthouse Trail was born.

The Tofino Streamkeepers Society is a not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to conserving and restoring watersheds within and around the community of Tofino. We help to train local people who want to take responsibility for our streams, creeks and wetlands and we often work cooperatively with government agencies, fisheries biologists, local businesses and residents to make the best decisions in protecting fish habitat and restoration. Some of our projects have been on Mackenzie Creek (Tofinoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest creek), Hot Springs Creek and Centennial Creek.

The Raincoast Education Society (RES) is an independent non-profit society and registered Canadian charity. The RES was established in August 2000 with a mission to help shape an environmentally sensitive future for the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region through education and community stewardship. Our aim is to enable citizens within and beyond the Clayoquot and Barkley Sound region to participate knowledgeably, effectively and responsibly in the work of shaping this future for our region and for our planet.

For many people the most difficult holiday of the year is Christmas. This day more than any other, can mean “family together”. It’s hard to be surͲ rounded with the sounds and preparations of Christmas when the person you want to share it with is no longer around to enjoy it.

Suggestions for coping with the holidays

ͼ Talk to your family about how you are all feeling.

ͼ Decide together what you want to do and not do for the holiday season. Accept help with preparaͲ tions, decorating, Christmas dinner and shopͲ ping. Shop by phone or catalogue. ͼ

ͼ Eliminate pressures as much as possible. It’s ok to change family traditions and not to do the things you don’t enjoy or have energy for. There is no right or wrong way to handle the day. It may be helpful to do things a little differently if this is your first Christmas since the death of your loved one. ͼ

ͼ Get lots of rest and be careful of “shoulds”. ͼ

ͼ Be gentle with yourself and don’t expect too much. ͼ

ͼ Take time to remember your loved one. Maybe light a candle, put your loved one’s name on the Hospice Celebrate a Life tree, or create a family or personal ritual of remembrance. ͼ

ͼ As the holiday approaches, share your concerns, feelings and apprehension with someone; accept offers of help; allow yourself to experience the sadness that comes.

Remembrance Trees

The Hospice Society invites you to remember a loved one you are missing this holiday season by placing their name and a message on a “Celebrate a Life” tree. Trees will be in the Ucluelet First Nations Health Clinic, Tofino Post Office and the Ucluelet Post Office.

The “Ceremony of Remembrance” to honour our loved ones will be 10am, Jan. 11 on Sobo’s patio in Tofino.

3rd Annual Longbeach Radio Hospice Radioathon

On December 10th Long Beach Radio hosts the Pacific Rim Hospice Society fundraising Radioathon. Tune in for live entertainment, interviews, amazing auction items proͲ vided by local businesses and to learn about Hospice’s role in the community and how you can help hospice through donations or volunteering.

Who? Anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, and would like support to walk through the pain.

What? 7 weekly meetings. No cost. First meeting at Hospice Centre 240 Neill St. Where? Group will alternate meetings in home communities of majority of participants How? Please call 250Ͳ725Ͳ1240 to put your name on a confidential interest list.

Everyone of us has experienced or will experience a loss due to death. It is not uncommon to wonder if our despair and loneliness is unusual. It’s not. Come and participate in a group of people dealing with their own losses and you will find that others are experiencing similar feelings.

Being together in a safe setting can be deeply healing.

The Tonquin Foundation is a nonprofit, British Columbia-based organization dedicated to the exploration, preservation and interpretation of the rich and diverse maritime heritage of North Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Westcoast.

The KidSport Fund is the charitable arm of Sport BC designed to remove financial obstacles that prevent some children from playing sports. Grants are given to INDIVIDUAL ATHLETES whose families cannot afford sport registration fees and who would otherwise not be able to participate in a season of sport.
