W
e are really happy to welcome Laura back! Laura has done some awe-
some work with our team and she brings lots of fun energy to our programming. Laura will be working with the After School group and on special events and filming permits. Welcome
back Laura!
T
he team at the community school/gym office has been really busy with afternoon
and evening programs. The turn out to the drop in gym sports has been fantastic, great to see everyone getting out and getting active! We recently conducted a survey of a variety of users, and it was clear our evening gym users want more access. While we were pretty sure this was the case, we thank each of you for providing your input. We’re working on it.

REGISTRATION INFO
To register for a program drop-in to Tofino’s Municipal Hall or the Community School gym office, or register by phone at 725-3229.
DID YOU KNOW?? You can now register for programs at the District Office, or at the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Office. Both locations will have all of the necessary registration information you may need. While the District Office is open from 9am – 4pm Monday to Friday, the Gym Office will also be open well into the evenings Monday to Friday, when it opens later in September. We hope this makes it convenient for you to register in advance of our programs. Registering in advance allows us time to consider implementing an extra class if the course is full, to ensure adequate materials and supplies are available, and to implement staff/instructor changes should we need to expand the program. Sorry, the course is full: Some classes fill quickly. If the class you want is full, please ask to be placed on the waitlist. You will be contacted if space becomes available or if we add additional classes. Changed your plans? A full credit or refund will be issued if we receive withdrawal information prior to the course start date unless specified otherwise during registration. There is a form available at the District Office to
apply for credits/refunds. It is extremely helpful if you have a copy of your receipt to attach to your application. What?! You had to cancel it? Sometimes excellent courses with excellent instructors are cancelled if everyone waits until the last minute to register (think “Tofino time”). Register early to avoid disappointment for yourself and others. New Program Idea? Tofino Parks and Recreation is always looking for new programs. If you have a skill you’d like to share please give us a call or stop by the District Office. We always have a need for instructors, coaches and volunteers! Program Minimum Ages For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the correct age prior to the first class of the program. Exceptions may apply for program-specific reasons. Accessibility We believe that recreation programs should be accessible to all children in our community regardless of ability to pay. If you find it difficult to participate in any program because of financial limitations, please speak with one of our staff.
This Spring Program Guide contains program and event information for March, April, May and June 2010.

Helmets for Skiers and Boarders Skiing has evolved into a faster sport than it was 10 years ago, and snowboarding has become very popular. As a result, more skiers and boarders protect themselves by wearing a helmet. During the mid to late1990s, ski helmet sales increased 10-fold in six years. It is no longer as rare to see people wearing helmets on the slopes as it was even a couple of years ago. Serious head injuries account for less than three per cent of total injuries among skiers and snowboarders, yet they are the leading cause of death, and the injuries can have lifelong consequences. A study of skiers treated for head injuries at a Colorado trauma centre was published in the October 2002 issue of The Journal of Trauma. It found that collisions with trees were the most common cause of head injury and were responsible for the most severe injuries. Snowboarders were three times more likely to suer a head injury than skiers.

“HEARTWORKS” TRADITIONAL LOMI LOMI
Heartworks is a old style lomilomi massage traditionally used by the bone setters (Chiropractors) of Hawaii. Passed down through generations, this particular “old style” linage is the teachings of Sherman Dudoit. The flowing style of Hawaiian bodywork includes long rhythmic stokes, creating a dance like movement that release energy blockages, increases circulation and oxygen flow to bring balance in spirit, mind and body. Working with the breath (Ha), we will open the sacred space of the Pu’u wai (heart) bringing true Aloha spirit into this beautiful form bodywork. No previous massage experience required. For the seasoned massage therapist this course will introduce full body massage strokes along with deepen a heart/ breathe work realignment to your existing therapies. Friday May 15th 6:00pm to 9:00pm Saturday May. 16th 9:00pm to 6:00pm Sunday May. 17th 9:00pm to 6:00pm Signy Cohen @ Wickaninnish Community School $350.00

Tonquin Beach Tree Planting Workbee
Tonquin Beach
Multi Use Path (MUP)
Big thanks to a group of hard working volunteers who planted shore pines on the small island in front of Tonquin Beach! There was significant damage done to the foliage over the course of 2009, and the new trees will help improve the stability of the remaining foliage. Please take care to not damage these new seedlings if you visit the island. A suggestion from a local resident is that if you do visit the island, to take a handful of sand with you to help with the erosion issue.
Our much loved multi use path is getting some upgrades this year! The first phase will be to improve the safety of the MUP at Sharp Road where the Dolphin Motel is located. Some trees have been removed to make way for the MUP to move off the highway, improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians. Some site prep work has begun and we look forward to having this section completed this spring. Survey work has been completed on the section between Bay St, near the
Pacific Breeze, and Olsen Road. This is a particularly challenging area for MUP location and we will be looking at a number of options to address the safety issues in this area.

Tofino Streamkeepers in restoring this park feature. Our next steps are to create a raingarden to catch the storm water runoff from First Street. This has been a great stewardship program for the school students, and we look forward to the day when the stream is fully restored and functioning as a stream should.
Downtown Planters and Signage The Development Services department has been working on redesigning our directional signage with input from downtown merchants. Together, we have identified the signage area at the corner of Second St and Campbell St as our first project. While Development Services will work on the signage aspect, we will be working on replacing and renewing the planter and bus shelter. This project will be a great showcase for other directional signage in our community.

Community Garden Working with the Tofino Community Food Initiative and School District 70, we have identified a site at the school for a possible community garden. The good folks at the Food Initiative table are now tasked with the details on exactly what this could look like. Meanwhile, we have been busy in the Bottom Weeders garden at the school, with lots of welcome help from the students and our volunteer consultant extraordinaire Miriam Turner. We have acquired some mason bee cocoons which classes will hatch and deliver to a hive near the garden.

Some classes will be starting in class composting, which will be transferred to a larger composter in the under cover area. Kelly has been working hard on encouraging the composting program at the school and we want to say a big thank you to the school community for supporting this initiative.
Youth Room Through funding from Union of BC Municipalities and the BC School Trustees Association, we are working to transform the mezzanine area into a welcoming usable space for our youth. Included in this transformation is a lounge area with large screen tv, WII Sports, Rockband and computers. Youth input is welcomed and encouraged! Chat with Evan or Doug if you have any ideas New Bearproof Bin welcomed to the Community Children’s Centre or suggestions.
Community Hall Beautification Community Hall After a particularly destructive break in at the hall over Christmas, the hall is now alarmed. You must have a code to access the hall. Through funding from BC Hydro through the Tree Canada program, we have planted a number of trees and shrubs in the area that will add some colour and much needed greenery to the surrounds. We have had reports that people are driving too fast up to the hall. Please remember that children are using this facility throughout the week and please drive carefully!
Thanks to a $5000 grant from Tree Canada, the Tofino Community Hall site received some much needed
beautification in the form of landscaping. Trina from Ordinary Corner Nursary worked with Parks Staff Theo Fadden to select vegetation suitable for the site. Theo worked in some chilly weather, digging in some not too friendly ground to get this project wrapped up before Christmas. A mix of evergreen and deciduous plants were used, and while some of the deciduous plants and trees don’t look like much now, they promise to look great come spring. Still to be planted on the site once the weather warms up are several rugosa roses.

“COMMUNITY IN THE SCHOOL, SCHOOL IN THE COMMUNITY” A partnership between the Wickaninnish Community School Society and the Tofino Recreation Commission
As we continue to streamline our service delivery, we are also working on some internal restructuring. Tara Taggart has been busy evaluating the results of our first survey and will be reporting back in mid March. We will also be surveying different factions of our community over the next month in order to identify any gaps in service delivery, and to hear what’s working and what needs improvement. Please help us to be the best we can be, and give us your input as the opportunities arise. From the research Tara has done to date, it would appear that there is some confusion as to what exactly we are doing. Essentially, we have combined the operations of the parks and recreation department with the operations of the Wickaninnish Community School Society (WCSS). The society was running programs such as the After School Program, pottery classes, Bottom Weeders garden, and other programs based out of the school. By combining the two organizations, we eliminate much of the duplication (eg. 1 volunteer organization instead of two, one set of payroll, one set of basketball
equipment, etc), and can better share resources (eg Rec van, office supplies and equipment, venue space, etc), while we also improve service delivery (eg registration at two venues instead of one, endeavouring to look at all programming to reduce conflicts, allocation of staffing to better address the needs, etc). And since we began the initiative in 2008, we have obtained outside funding so that there has been NO additional cost to the tax payer. As we move forward, we are looking at identifying what our community needs to be truly healthy; physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually healthy. So we need you to think about what your needs are in all of these areas as we approach you for your ideas in helping us move forward. Thank you to those of you who completed the first survey!!

Our own Kelly Alexander has been leading the Tuff Girls program every Thursday after school. Each session starts with a healthy snack, chatting, laughing and a question that is put in the special girl club box. Its a time where girls can be girls and just have a laugh or discuss topics that are important to them. After that it is on to the focus event of the day. Some of our events so far have been a DIY Spa day, A Studio Art / Fashion Tour, Surfing with Surf Sister Surf School, and Yoga.Upcoming activities will include Pottery, Photography, Sports Day and lots, lots more! To get involved with the Tuff Girls program stop by the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Office.

Got Cleats?
Do you have old cleats that won’t fit your child next season? Please consider giving them to our Soccer Cleat Exchange Program. In order to make our children’s soccer programs as accessible as possible, we have a collection of used soccer cleats and shin pads that we both loan out and give away. If you child has outgrown their cleats or pads, please consider giving them to this program. If we have a larger size that fits your child, you are welcome to take them. If not you can rest assured that the equipment will find a deserving home. You can drop equipment off at the Wickaninnish Community School Gym Office or at Tofino’s Municipal Hall.

Remembering John John Bradford served on the Tofino Recreation Commission in the late ‘80s/early 90s. He was very much involved in our community and had his hand in innumerable projects and initiatives. His sense of humour, fair and calm demeanour, and the fact he could always be counted on, are all very much missed. Our hearts go out to Dianne, Roz, Josh, Chris and Clarissa.
