BOAT SHOW: Special section starts on page 19 ❚SURREY/Old SET slate is reunited – and it feels so good

HUNT HANGS WITH ‘FRIENDS’ AGAIN SURREY – And Ted COLLEY then there was one. Staff Reporter Coun. Bob Bose is the lone holdout on Surrey city council as colleague Marvin Hunt confirmed Monday he has joined Mayor Dianne Watts’ Surrey First civic slate. Surrey First now has eight of nine council seats with Bose holding the sole remaining spot for the left-wing Surrey Civic Coalition. Hunt agreed he’s moved a long way from 2005 when Watts was first elected mayor and he was a senior member of the Surrey Electors Team slate that dominated council then. “It’s absolutely true, a long way. I think it was just watching council work-

ing together to get things accomplished without acrimony. It’s all been very good for the city and its residents.” Most members of Surrey First once belonged to SET, including Watts her-

self, and Hunt said that played a part in his decision to move. “You reach a point where you say, ‘Why am I not with my friends?’ I helped most of those people get elected.” Beset by internal strife and Watts’ landslide 2005 victory over its mayoral candidate, incumbent Doug McCallum, SET eventually bowed out of Surrey civic politics after several of its elected councillors defected to Surrey First in 2007. That left Hunt, a councillor since 1987 and a SET member since 1990, with no slate to back him. He was reelected as an independent in 2008. Hunt expects the upcoming campaign

in November will be a somewhat easier road now that he’s part of a machine once again. “Will it be less stressful? I have a sneaking suspicion it will be so,” Hunt said. There has been similar activity over on school board, a newly minted slate called Surrey First Education now holds all but two seats. Two SCC trustees, Terry Allen and Laurie Larsen, defected to SFE last month, joining with former SET trustees in the new slate modelled after Surrey First. One of the remaining places belongs to board chair Laurae McNally and the other to the SCC’s Ijaz Chatha. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com
