A Christmas with clarity Pair of ‘shining stars’ in Surrey have much to celebrate this year
A
fter years of struggling on the Marisa BABIC Staff Reporter streets, Marilyn Peters and James Norburn have a home for Christmas. The couple, both recovering alcoholics, will celebrate Christmas morning in a nice new basement suite in the Fleetwood area of Surrey, complete with hardwood floors and a granite countertop in the kitchen. There will be presents under the Christmas tree but the couple’s best gift already arrived five weeks ago, their baby boy, Daneil. “It’s totally different than last year, last Christmas was a blur,” says Peters, who admits to the alcoholic haze. “I look at myself now, and I can’t believe I’m here right now. Last year, I didn’t think I would ever be in this position where I would have Daneil and I’d be in a great relationship and have so much support around me. It’s awesome.” The road to recovery was a tough one. Both Peters and Norburn come from troubled backgrounds. Norburn, 26, comes from a family of nine children, all of them adopted. He considers himself lucky in that he was able to stay together with his sister, and be adopted into the same home. He left home at the age of 18 and ended up on the streets of Surrey a year later. For a time, he crashed in various shelters in Surrey and downtown Vancouver, in between bouts of “drinking and partying.” In 2006, Norburn checked into rehab to dry out. “I stayed clean for almost six months then I feel off the wagon again and kept drinking,” he says. Peters, 23, comes from a family where alcohol has ruined lives. The death of three family members in the same year, her father and both grandmothers, was a devastating blow and she took frequent solace in alcohol to cope with her staggering loss. Two years ago, she enrolled in college and received a secretarial certificate but never got a chance to make use of it. Peters and her mother lost their place and sought refuge in a series of homeless shelters. Peters and Norburn, who met in New Westminster, have been coming to the Surrey Urban Mission in Whalley for the past four years where they have received mats for the night and many meals. They’ll be sharing Christmas dinner with about 300 other guests at the mission.

Things are looking up for former Surrey Urban Mission clients Marilyn Peters and James Norburn who now stop by three times a week to help others. While they serve meals, staff and volunteers compete to see who gets to hold their five-week-old son, Daneil.

Rebuilding a life is easier when you have five-week-old inspiration, dad says continued from page 1 Despite failed previous attempts to stay sober, they finally found the strength to quit drinking after they found out that Peters was pregnant. “When we found out we were having a
baby, we stopped drinking,” Peters says. “We’ve been clean for 10 months,” adds Norburn. The couple found their basement suite with the help of Jonquil Halgate, manager of Surrey Urban Missions, who managed to convince a sympathetic landlord to give
them a chance. Halgate says Peters and Norburn have overcome monumental obstacles and “done brilliantly” in building a new life for their little family. “They’re shining stars,” she says. Though he’s slipped before, Norburn is
confident that fatherhood will keep him on the straight and narrow this time. He knows their tiny bundle of joy will see to it. “It’s a big inspiration in our life,” he says. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – Victims’ Tom ZYTARUK rights activists are slamStaff Reporter ming the Salvation Army of Canada for giving federal convicts “Sunshine Bags” for Christmas that are funded in part by court-ordered fines. “That shouldn’t go back to the offenders in any way, shape or form,” said David Toner, president of Families Against Crime and Trauma. “It should go to the victims,” he said. “Charitable dollars should be spent on those who have suffered at the hands of criminals, not those who perpetrate the crime.” Andrew Burditt, a spokesman for the Salvation Army, said it has been incorrectly reported across that the source of the cash is court-ordered restitution funds. “That is not the case,” he said. Burditt said the money for the “Sunshine Bags” comes either from the Sally Ann’s administrative budget or “in large part” from court-ordered donations to charities. If someone is convicted of a “petty” crime, he said, a judge might give the offender the option of donating cash to a charity of their choice in lieu of being sentenced, with “the Salvation Army being one of those options.” Still, Toner finds no comfort in that. “It doesn’t change much. “It’s still cash coming from a court-levied fine,” he said. “Either way, it’s ordered by a court.”
Toner advises crime victims who are thinking about donating cash to the Sally Ann to “ask where it’s being spent, but don’t necessarily stop.” He and his wife, Sandra Martins-Toner, launched F.A.C.T. – a victims’ rights advocacy organization – after their teenaged son Matthew was murdered at the Surrey Central SkyTrain station in 2005. They have been working for the past five years to ensure there’s adequate funding for victims programs. “These programs are constantly short-funded as more money is spent on Legal Aid and other offender-serving programs,” Toner said. “The victims’ surcharge fee, which is supposed to be levied against offenders at sentencing to pay for victims’ programs is more often that not waived by the judge. We have a difficult time tracking where this money goes and have long suspected that it is diverted into general government revenue, rather than to victims.” The goodie bags reportedly contain candies, magazines and hygiene products. These “Sunshine Bags” for criminals, Toner said, confirm that victims of crimes “are once again being snubbed” by the justice system. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

MARTIAL ARTS
Anti-gang cops have hectic weekend
Martial Arts
SURREY – A Surrey Tom ZYTARUK man whose brother was Staff Reporter shot dead in Burnaby in October was arrested on Saturday and charged with counseling to commit aggravated assault. The Gang Task Force arrested Sukhveer Dhak, 26, near 136th Street and 58th Avenue. He’d been on bail in connection with Project Gateway, a drug trafficking investigation conducted by the Delta Police, Surrey RCMP and the Gang Task Force. Saturday’s arrest was related to an incident that was to take place on Nov. 15 in Surrey. Police would not release details. Dhak’s brother, Gurmit Dhak, 32, was murdered at the Metrotown shopping mall on Oct. 16 in what police say was a targeted shooting. In another investigation, Christopher Chand, 38, of Vancouver was arrested on Friday and has been charged with assault

causing bodily harm, breach of bail and auto theft. Police had also arrested him in July after seizing two handguns that were stashed in a secret compartment in his car. B.C.’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit arrested both men as part of its ongoing gang disruption and suppression. The Surrey RCMP’s Gang Enforcement Team was also busy on the weekend, arresting a 46-year-old man and 30-yearold woman in Langley. Both are facing numerous firearms and drug charges. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said police seized two high-powered rifles, numerous prohibited rifle magazines and some small arms ammo. Police also found evidence of a methamphetamine lab - red phosphorus, acetone, methyl hydrate and laboratory glassware. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
DELTA – Delta council has approved a study that will assess the impact of the Vancouver Landfill on Burns Bog. Concerns were raised earlier this year about the double ditch leachate containment system at the landfill in East Ladner, which is adjacent to Burns Bog. Leachate is liquid that moves through, or drains from, a landfill. It can be created when rainwater mixes with chemical
waste or it may already exist in the landfill. Leachate can be virtually harmless or toxic, depending on the material in the landfill. Delta’s civic politicians have approved up to $30,000 for a water chemistry monitoring study. Water sampling will begin in early 2011 and will include samples from winter, spring and summer. – Jessica Kerr

Interfaith service set for tonight
Four girls pepper-sprayed during brawl
Cold weather brings spike in car thefts
NORTH DELTA – Crossroads United Church in North Delta is hosting an “interfaith celebration of hope” Tuesday night, the longest night of the year. Reverend Cari Copeman-Haynes said it’s a chance for people to come together “against the darkness. “Rather than giving in to despair, or being shadowed by fear, we can choose the light - and choose it together despite our differences.” The “spiritual oasis of healing and openness” will begin at 7 p.m. at the church, at 7655 Scott Road. – The Now
NORTH DELTA – Police mopped up two brawls between teens at Chalmers Park and Delview Park on Friday. Four girls were pepper-sprayed during a fight between a large group of teenagers at Chalmers Park, at 114th Street and 76th Avenue. Police are still looking for their suspect, an South Asian male, 17 or 18 years old, who is six feet tall and wore a black sweater, black ball cap and was carrying a black canister. Meantime, a group of drunk teens – again, both boys and girls – fought it out in Delview Park, in the 9000-block of 116th Street. One 17-year-old girl with a swollen eye claimed a boy had hit her. Police called her parents to come get her, acting Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said. “All were uncooperative with police at the scene.” – Tom Zytaruk
SURREY – When the weather gets chilly, the car thieves get busy. People who leave their car in their driveway, with the keys in the ignition, to warm them up in the morning are presenting an irresistible temptation to thieves. Every winter, Surrey Mounties see a sharp increase in auto theft – by as much as 150 per cent – thanks to this. “This is a trend we see every winter,” said Cpl. Mike Spencer, of the Surrey RCMP. “It is also very common to see with every theft of this nature that the victim will indicate that he or she ‘had just run inside to grab something,’ only to come back out and see their car driving away.” Police suggest that a vehicle’s engine will warm up “a lot quicker” if you start the engine, wait 30 seconds and then drive away. – Tom Zytaruk

Potential NDP leaders face huge challenges Now that the NDP has picked a date to choose its new leader, you can expect candidates to start declaring themselves fairly Keith soon, and I BALDREY expect the field will be at least as crowded as the B.C. Liberal leadership race. Of course, given the serious divide that has fractured the NDP, it’s hard to see why anyone would even want the job of leader. And now that the party may have fumbled a good chance of winning the next election, there’s a good possibility that whoever wins the race will simply look at years of Opposition status, rather than a move into the premier’s office. But someone has to take over from Carole James, and already a number of names have surfaced as potential successors. It’s a little early to handicap the race, given that the vote is not until April 17 and whomever the B.C. Liberals choose as their leader will have a big impact on which candidate the New Democrats eventually choose. Still, let’s look at a few of the potential aspirants:
InTheHouse
ViewPoint
now
❚POLITICS
MIKE FARNWORTH: According to a couple of polls, he has a decided edge with the public and ranks among the highest with NDP voters. Definitely a front-runner if he decides to run, Farnworth is a likeable, respected MLA who has served in government as a cabinet minister and has performed well as the NDP’s house leader. But Farnworth is also very much a political centrist, whose views are identical to those held by the outgoing James. Once this fact dawns on the NDP members, support for Farnworth may dissipate rather quickly. The party’s members are likely to be more left-wing, and may
strong speech-making. I have to wonder whether Dix and Horgan, who are good friends, may decide that only one of them would run, with the other backing him. GEORGE HEYMAN: The former head of the B.C. Government Employees Union, Heyman is a good orator who performed well when the BCGEU was dealing with big cutbacks during the B.C. Liberals’ first term. He’s currently executive director of the Sierra Club, which cuts him some street cred with the environmentalists in the party. But he’s still a bit of an outsider, and private sector union members in the NDP can’t be counted on to necessarily support a former public sector union boss. HARRY LALI: While at first blush it would seem Lali is at best a long-shot, keep in mind that the NDP will pick its next leader using the one member/one vote system, which makes the ability of signing up new members a critical strength. The Indo-Canadian community, for example, is passionate about politics and getting involved in campaigns, which may give Lali a significant advantage over the other candidates. He’s known for his aggressive manner, which can be a turn-off
for some members, and he was also one of the notorious Baker’s Dozen of dissidents, which will alienate him from some people. But he’s also fairly popular in the legislature, and he may be the only candidate from outside the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, which would give regional strength others may lack. So that’s the early assessment. Other candidates will no doubt step forward in the coming weeks, but don’t assume anyone has the magic touch when it comes to healing the internal strife in the party. have a hard time embracing yet another James-like centrist. As well, the notorious Gang of 13 dissidents – who do not abide by democratic rule, remember – may turn on Farnworth simply for his strong support of the woman they knocked off. And this may be a problem plaguing other would-be candidates, such as: JOHN HORGAN: A former aide in the NDP government of the 1990s, Horgan is one of the strongest MLAs in the NDP caucus. He can be quite aggressive, particularly with those who don’t see things his way, and that may make it difficult for him to broaden any support he may have in the party. Horgan is a good communicator (better than Farnworth) and can be counted on to rally the troops. Whether enough of them would rally around him remains to be seen. ADRIAN DIX: Like Horgan, he was also a former aide in the NDP government (he was Glen Clark’s chief of staff) and is another strong performer in the caucus. His enemies will try to use his close association with Clark against him, but I don’t think that will have much traction with party members. Dix’s biggest weakness, though, is that he is not a great communicator and isn’t known for

‘Happy Holidays’ works fine The Editor, Re: “Readers applaud young defender of Christmas,” the Now letters, Dec. 17. It was disheartening to read so many responses published in the Now from fellow Canadians supporting Chelsea Phelps’ letter about discrimination against Christmas and enlarging the divide between “other cultures” and Canadians. Chelsea openly acknowledged that the school had made efforts to create a bulletin board to celebrate the season as well as put a Christmas tree in the foyer. Perhaps, it would be advisable
for Chelsea to think about not just Hanukkah and Christmas but other holidays during this season that are celebrated by fellow Canadians such as Kwanzaa and Winter Solstice. It was probably because of this that the Global Unity Club decided to go with a generic “Happy Holidays” rather than change to a different greeting every few days for the two weeks in December that students go to school. One reader wrote in about “Canadian” holidays. I would like to say that any holiday celebrated by a Canadian citizen is a Canadian holiday and it should not matter how long that Canadian has been on Canadian soil. I am not a Christian nor a Jew nor a Muslim. However, when I come across fellow Canadians who celebrate these holidays, I will say “Merry Christmas,” “Happy Hanukkah,” or “Eid Mubarak” and go to events to which I am invited out of respect to all Canadians’ celebrations, without feeling like any of them is being “shoved down my throat” as claimed by another writer. If I come across a diverse group like you would find in a school, “Happy Holidays” should be a perfectly acceptable alternative that acknowledges everyone.

Christmas is my holiday The Editor, Re: “How dare schools discriminate against Christmas,” the Now letters, Dec. 14. Christmas is not gone, it is here to stay like it or not. I recently visited Guildford Town Centre to buy chocolates for our neighbourhood children. I spotted a nice box with chocolate inside suitable for the kids so decided to buy eight boxes. Looking at the cover, it read “Happy Holidays” so I immediately got the clerk and asked for something with “Merry Christmas.” I was told they did not have anything with “Merry Christmas.” I then asked the clerk what was the purpose of celebrating happy holidays, as Dec. 25th was a Christian
holiday and celebrates the birth of Christ, the poorest of the poor? Christmas is about two things – Christ and mass. It is not about selling or buying expensive gifts. It is about peace, love, family, friends and giving to those in need. It is appropriate to exchange gifts, but not the outlandish way we are doing things today. Anyone who wants to celebrate happy holidays can do so, but leave Christmas alone. If store personnel cannot wish us “Merry Christmas” or sell items with “Merry Christmas” written on it, then we are surely heading in the wrong direction. Christmas is my holiday, and any store suggesting that it is merely a “Happy Holiday” occasion will not get my business now or in the future. Merry Christmas everyone, and to those who do not celebrate the Christmas season, call your holiday what it really is, just time off work. No need to celebrate or try to change our Christian values and beliefs by discriminating against us by having the term “Happy Holidays” replace “Merry Christmas.” It is time all Christians who believe in Christmas stand up and be counted.
Pat Cecchetto, Surrey
Thanks for Christmas letter The Editor, Re: “How dare schools discriminate against Christmas,” the Now letters, Dec. 14. It’s time to let our politicians, public schools, and business community know that Christians will not stand for double standards. Let’s follow the example of this courageous Grade 11 student from Delta. A big thank you also to Harvinder Sandhu for her column in the Now.
Deanne Fernandes, Surrey
Borrowing strategies work The Editor, Re: “Surrey residents not convinced that $200M debt is a good idea,” the Now, Dec. 14.
Debt for the acquisition of a valuable asset is the basis of all strong economies. It allows us the use of the asset while we reduce the debt. The cost of the debt can be looked at as a rental payment for the use of the asset while we pay for it. Without an intelligent, wellplanned borrowing strategy that is being used by all business as well as government, it is doubtful we would enjoy the growth and vigorous economy that we have.
Letters
The Editor, Re: “Readers applaud young defender of Christmas,” the Now letters, Dec. 17. This holiday season wouldn’t be complete without the ringing of hands and moaning about the attack on Christmas. So what I’d like to know is, where are the “holiday police” who force stores to greet customers for the holidays? Where are the anti-Christmas protestors burning Christmas trees on Christian’s lawns? Who is knocking on doorways telling families how shameful their Christmas pride is and to keep it to themselves? It is not the case that Christmas is under attack but that Christmas does not mean the same thing to everyone. Christians are demanding to call the holiday what they want while denying everyone else that same thing. Christians claim that their manner of celebration is somehow denied to them by denying everyone else the celebration method of their choice – commercially and as a secular family holiday. Christians need to stop taking it so personally that other people don’t have to do as Christians do. We all have a choice and some mutual respect for each other’s choices would go a long way to making the season bright and merry.

Thank you, Watts and team
The Editor, We have come to the end of the year – it is time to say goodbye to 2010. I would like to say a big thank you to Surrey’s mayor and councillors for all the work that they have done for the improvement of our city. I know some people will agree with me and some will not – that’s OK. Lets look at all the great work that has been done and is being done in our city, which we can proudly say “The Future Lives Here.” Yes. there are some issues but I myself am proud of my city, the mayor and look at all the good that has been achieved. I applaud Dianne Watts and her team and wish them all a very Merry Christmas and a successful 2011.

How about ‘Canadian?’ Re: “Labelling people is practice I could do without,” the Now, Dec. 10. With respect to Harvinder Sandhu’s column on labelling, I have a suggestion on changing labels – call yourself Canadian!

A few of my favourite things... Homes
This year, I used a bright pink bowl, filled with large and medium-sized glass-chipped turquoise balls, for the dining room centrepiece — an example of my desire to use less traditional colours of Christmas in the home. BELOW: Stockings hung with care. I was given these glass textured tree ornaments and have managed to hold on to them after all these years. I placed them (carefully) in an old-fashioned metal container and put it on the side table in the living room. My grandparents would have been proud.
some and perfect for the informal space. Last, but not least, the third tree is in the dining room. It is the more whimsical tree of the bunch; this one is, heaven forbid, also fake, and sports only wooden, colourful ornaments. I love the flying monkeys and the girl upside down on a trapeze. It is a rather thin tree, (bordering on emaciated), with wiry, Dr. Seuss-like branches, and offers an interesting contrast to the formal room. The living room and den mantles are kept simple this year, with long strands of heavy greenery. The living room has three large pillar candles (deep purple in colour), two elongated
brass horns for fun and strands of berries casting down either ends of the mantle. The den mantle has three whimsical characters situated in the greenery that suit the colours and atmosphere of the room. Every year, as I begin this long process of decorating for the Christmas season, I think, “Oh, the work,” but it all comes together surprisingly fast, and I can sit back and enjoy. Merry Christmas. Every year, Christmas seems to come up a little quicker than the last. All the boxes filled with Christmas décor must come up from the basement and carefully be put into place. Whether it’s the crystal beaded Santa, Karly the glass bowl filled with PAUL-MORRIS oversized pears or the classic manger scene, I like to put everything in a different location in the home than the previous year. Flexibility and creativity are a must! I remember my grandparents’ Christmas tree was filled with bright silver tinsel and different coloured, round glass light bulbs that appeared to have been heavily dipped in sugar. I always liked the look of their tree, probably just because it was theirs! I enjoy using sentimental pieces when accessorizing, and that goes for Christmas too. As luck would have it, I was given these glass textured tree ornaments and have managed to hold on to them after all these years. I placed them (carefully) in an old-fashioned metal container and put it on the side table in the living room. My grandparents would have been proud. I like the unusual when it comes to decorating my home for the holidays. Using less of the traditional colours (kelly green and apple red), I am attracted to the unexpected shades and tones. This year, I used a bright pink bowl, filled with large and medium-sized glass-chipped turquoise balls, for the dining room centrepiece. A beautiful beaded wreath is underneath the bowl, lifting it slightly off the table to create a little more presence to the look. There are three Christmas trees in my house. I have a synthetic (fake) tree in the living room and I must say, I love it. It’s what you might call the “feminine” tree in the house, and is decorated with old-fashioned cloth dolls and every shape and size of crystal glass ornaments imaginable. Strands of pearls lace the tree and the fiber-optic lighting is mesmerizing. By description, it may sound like something suited for Disneyland, but it is quite elegant. The den is the home of the second tree in our house. For years, a tradition in our family is traveling with everyone in tow and cutting down our own, real tree — at a place in Langley where it’s all on the up and up! The biggest challenge here is agreeing on one tree. This year it was actually not raining and was quite sunny with crisp fresh air. This tree is filled with all the homemade decorations that my two sons made growing up, and interesting ornaments that have been given to me over the years. Red and green wood beads (the colours I mentioned above that I don’t use much) circle the tree and, when it’s all said and done, it’s very hand-

The 2011 shortlist for the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction has been announced. The BC Award is the richest non-fiction book prize in the country, and is the non-fiction counterpart to the Giller Prize for fiction and the Griffin Poetry Prize. The finalists for the $40,000 prize are Stevie Cameron for On the Farm: Robert William Pickton and the Tragic Story of Vancouver’s Missing Women, James FitzGerald for What Disturbs Our Blood: A Son’s Quest to Redeem the Past, Charles Foran for Mordecai: The Life & Times and John Vaillant for The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. Jury members read the 151 submitted books, narrowed the submissions to a list of 10 and then decided on the shortlist. The winner will be announced Jan. 31 at a special presentation ceremony in Vancouver. “The finalists award demonstrate the talent and diversity of non-fiction writing in Canada today,” said Keith Campbell, a director of the B.C. Achievement Foundation, in announcing the nominees. “This award is B.C.’s opportunity to highlight the important contribution Canada’s best non-fiction writers make to our nation’s culture and discourse.” The short list was chosen by jury mem-
bers Alma Lee, founder of the Vancouver Writers and Readers Festival and Writers’ Union of Canada; Philip Marchand, author, book columnist, and magazine writer; and Noah Richler, author and broadcaster.

The Book of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks, by Bethany Keeley. Published by Chronicle Books, $16.95. Does bad grammar drive you crazy or poor spelling get your temperature up? For Bethany Keeley, it is the misuse of quotation marks that puts her over the edge. She has collected a gallery of signs, which boldly display their abuse of the English language. Keeley interprets what the message is actually conveyed by these quotation marks to often hilarious results. The Ultimate Metallica, by Ross Halfin. Published by Chronicle Books, $40. Metallica’s rise to super-stardom is captured in photographs spanning their career. Photographer Ross Halfin has covered them right from the beginning and enjoys complete access to the band and it shows in his pictures. A great mix of colour and black and white photographs fill the pages, showing their shaggy-haired early days through to the massive stage shows that they now command.
James Hetfield and his band are the subject of photographer Ross Halfin’s The Ultimate Metallica.
Canadian Voices, distributed by Inspired by Holdings, $23.95. This collection of stories by some of our best-known Canadians offers their accounts of who has inspired them. Prime Minister Stephen Harper opens the book with his nod to the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. Others give more personal tales like David Suzuki who speaks of the inspiration he has gained from his young daughter. Or there is gold medalist Alexandre
Gary Goldschneiders’s Everyday Astrology, Published by Quirk Books, $27.95. Astrologer Gary Goldschneider looks at each of the zodiac signs and explains how they should interact with the other signs. He looks at each one from a wide range of perspectives. What may be good advice for Aries to get along with your Pisces lover may be terrible for your Pisces boss and Goldschneider helps you make these distinctions. Each sign is divided into three groups; Work, Love, Friends and Family. Inside those categories are more specific ones, such as coworkers, spouse, roommate, parent and more. The Field Guide to Natural Phenomena, by Keith Heidorn and Ian Whitelaw. Published by Firefly Books, 224 pages, $24.95. What is an eclipse? How are dust devils created? What makes a geyser work? Questions like these concerning natural phenomena have been around as look as mankind. What were once attributed to the work of ancient gods are now known to be naturally occurring events. With easy to understand explanations authors Heidorn and Whitelaw guide us through these wonders.
For author Bethany Keeley, it is the misuse of quotation marks that puts her over the edge.

Seven trends you will regret. Seriously In 1978, I wore a Joanne LAUCIUS crinkle-cotton empire- Postmedia News waist dress with a flounced skirt to my Grade 8 graduation, accessorized with strappy platform sandals. For my high school formal, it was a Dynasty-inspired concoction. Four years later, my convocation ensemble was memorable for the breadth of the shoulder pads and the garishness of the floral print. The horror! History alone qualifies me to warn you about fashion trends you will regret:

Skinny jeans Total misnomer. Whoever came up with this term should be sued for false advertising. Unless you are a member of a punk band whose sole sustenance is cigarettes and heroin, a woman with the figure of a 12-year-old boy or a 12-year-old boy, skinny jeans will not make you look skinny. The skinniness of the leg portion emphasizes the expansiveness of the butt portion.

If you try to counteract this effect by adding a pair of heels, it creates the footwear equivalent of wearing a plunging neckline and a short skirt. Tawdry. Running shoes are even worse. Dowdy. If you must wear skinny jeans, wear them with ballerina flats, but not the flattest flats. You will need a half-inch heel to add some elevation to your over-emphasized butt.

Leggings I have been through three iterations of the leggings fad and fervently hope it does not descend into stirrup pants. Leggings start off innocently. Sylphlike models wear leggings on runway, usually paired with a tunic top. So far, so good. Sylphlike models look good in just about everything. It’s their job. Then the inevitable happens. People in the general population are convinced leggings are like roomy track pants, only slimming. Before long, people who should be wearing roomy track pants are wearing leggings. Enough said.

Shboots Of all of the most inexplicable trends of the past two years, this hybrid of the ankle bootie and the peep-toed pump is the most perplexing. Don’t get me wrong. Somewhere circa 1982, I bought a pair of high-heeled lace-up oxfords, which I thought had a certain naughty librarian je ne sais quoi when worn with tweed, Elvis Costello glasses and a chignon. The effect was formidable. The shboot is formidable only in its unrelenting ugliness. The point of wearing high-heeled footwear is to elongate your legs. Ankle booties just make them look stumpy. The same goes for ankle socks worn with heels, which designers are trying to foist on us this fall. Don’t be fooled. Only cheerleaders and tennis players should wear ankle socks, and never with heels.
Ugg boots make even the daintiest feet seem gigantic, and the look is worse in late winter when the boots have acquired a high-water mark of salt stains.

but excess knitwear. It looks especially bad from behind. None of your friends will tell you this, so I am. Skinny belt, wide belt — it doesn’t matter. Not flattering. Balloon skirt Behold the fashion travesty that is the dirndl skirt. The waistband sits above the natural waist, where metres of voluminous fabric are gathered. The dirndl’s only redeeming quality is that it is suitable for Oktoberfest or a square dance, as long as it’s worn with a crinoline. Now, take this travesty and multiply the insult by gathering at the hem as well, resulting in a bell-shaped skirt you can’t even wear to a square dance.
Keira Knightley in the 2005 movie Pride & Prejudice.
❚FASHION continued from page 16 Category B: You are the star of a film set in the Regency period. It is no coincidence that Jane Austen films usually star willowy, flat-chested actresses such as Keira Knightley or Gwyneth Paltrow. When a fashion succeeds in making Paltrow look matronly, then you know it’s not for the hoi polloi. Sweater with belt Remember the muffin top? This is similar, except that the offending bit isn’t billows of pale skin ballooning over the top of the belt,
Ugg boots I don’t know if shlumping is a word. If it isn’t, it needs to be. To shlump: (verb) the clumsy, joyless trudge of a teenaged girl wearing oversized flat-heeled shearling boots suitable only for apres ski wear in a public place. Uggs make even the daintiest feet seem gigantic. Because of the non-shape of the soles and the softness of the sheepskin, the boots wear in such a way that they emphasize the wearer’s every podiatric idiosyncrasy. The look is worse in late winter when the boots have acquired a high-water mark of salt stains. Uggs have been part of the North American fashion landscape since 2004. The shlumping shows no signs of abating. The looks are getting a refresher this year with the addition of faux fur. Fans argue that Uggs are comfortable. What they really mean is: “This footwear is so expensive that I can justify wearing something so ugly by claiming that it is comfortable.” You want comfortable and Australian? Get a pair of Blundstones. At least you’ll look capable of farming.
POWER LINE TREE PRUNING AND HAZARD TREE REMOVALS IN SOUTH SURREY When: December 9, 2010 to March 31, 2011 Time: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm Trees are a significant cause of power interruptions. Contact between trees and power lines can also create a severe danger. Over the next few months we will be pruning and removing trees in the South Surrey area. Boundaries: Crescent Beach-Ocean Park West of 128th Street South from Mud Bay, South of 16th Avenue East to 144th and out to Boundary Bay Waterfront. Trees are pruned using the best arboriculture (tree care) practices. Skilled workers employed by BC Hydro are trained in both electrical safety and tree care. Only correct and proper techniques are used to eliminate any safety hazards. O.Noir, what a trip dining in the dark! Mom’sLife
Last week I was lucky enough to tag along on my husband’s trip to Montreal for his office Christmas party. We decided to make a trip of it and Kelley stayed for five glori- SCARSBROOK ous days. Despite the winter weather, which dipped to a frosty minus 12C, the city was warm and welcoming. One night, we decided to have an evening out at a unique restaurant that we had heard many people rave about in the city. It was called O.Noir, which is an entire dining experience in the dark — pitch dark. It’s a concept that was devised to heighten the senses, intensify the dining experience and, most of all, to truly understand what it is like to live in a world of darkness. The servers are sight impaired, and they are the diners’ guide for the night. Before entering the dining area, we had to remove our watches, cellphones and virtually anything that may shed light in the room, and put them in a locker. We were shown a menu to select our dinner and drinks in a dimly-lit room. We then stood in front of a black door, waiting for our server to guide us in to the ink-black room. I stared at my husband nervously waiting for the inevitable. I had no idea what it was going to be like, but

Celebrate the holidays. Get home safe.
I knew it was a chance to do something that not many people will ever get to experience. Keep in mind, even when we lose electricity, we have fireplaces, candles and flashlights to help us see. Our server, who expertly took us in, had us put our hands on each other’s shoulders as we entered the room. I had to stop once before we got to our table. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My brain instantly went in to panic mode. After a few tense moments, we continued to our table, where we were seated and instructed on where we could find our utensils, plate and glass. Sitting there, listening to the conversations around me, I felt a bit awkward. I recalled one person at my husband’s work telling us not to try and see; if you do, it strains the eyes. So I resigned myself to keeping my eyes at half-mast, and looking downwards (at least I think that’s what I was doing). I tried to make idle chit-chat with my husband, but every so often my brain would scream out, “You can’t see, you can’t see, you can’t see!” And I’d have to pause and acknowledge the fact that I couldn’t see, and then continue on with the conversation. I tried to visualize what my husband was doing across from me. Between courses, we would try and guess what colour the room was, how we were sitting and how far other
diners were apart from us. I actually stretched my arm out as far as I could to get an idea where the person behind me was sitting; my hand touched their chair and I must admit, I felt a bit more grounded. The food was delicious but I cheated a few times by reaching out with my hand to touch the food on my plate before using utensils. When we were guided out of the restaurant and we were back out in the well-lit street, my husband and I were silent. What could be said for an experience that literally put us in the shoes of someone without sight? How do you put into words what is an everyday experience for someone who has expertly learned to adapt to our world? The sheer magnitude of it was a bit overwhelming. Many of us will never truly understand what it is like to have our sight taken away from us. But for those 90 minutes, I did. Although I couldn’t see anything in that room that night, what I took with me from that experience made me see more than I ever have in my life. ❚ LIVING Colours and shapes dazzle in Lower Antelope Canyon, near Page, Arizona.
❚TRAVEL/Arizona
Two canyons and a crater
I carefully Karoline CULLEN lower myself Now contributor into the crack in the earth’s crust. I can barely fit, and had the guide not said this was the entrance, we would have walked right past it. My husband Gary and I are in northern Arizona. The famous Grand Canyon is on our itinerary but first on our list are lesser known, but no less intriguing, vents and dents in the earth’s crust. Meteor Crater, near Winslow, is an impact site. Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons, by Page, are cathedrals of red sandstone. The vastness of the crater makes its size difficult to comprehend. The narrowness of the latter two canyons calls for some fancy maneuvering to navigate their sinuous corridors of stone. As we approach Meteor Crater, walls of rocky rubble rise above the vast desert plateau. They surround a gigantic bowlshaped cavity that was created in a matter of seconds 50,000 years ago. A meteorite, about 50 metres across and weighing several hundred thousand tons, crashed into the rocky plain. The impact sent a shockwave over the desert, spread a blanket of debris for over a mile and tossed limestone blocks the size of small houses onto the rim. It is a desolate, wind-swept big hole — almost 1.5 kilometres across and deep enough to swallow a 60-storey building.
I can barely see, even with a telescope, a life-size cutout of an astronaut on the crater floor. It is a nod to when NASA’s Apollo astronauts trained here for their geological studies on the moon. Fortunately for ongoing scientific studies, erosion is not taking a huge toll, and this crater is the best preserved impact site on Earth. The unexpectedly large visitor centre provides interactive lessons in astronomy, geology and history. The crater’s story starts in the early 1900s, when D. Barringer thought he could mine iron here, but because the meteor fragmented on contact, a lode of ore was not found. Proving a meteor impact had, in fact, created the crater was a long, convoluted process and finally completed in 1960. The crater continues to be a site for multi-disciplined scientific research. That astrogeologists estimate an impact-caused crater of this size should occur about once every 50,000 years gives us pause. In contrast to the millennia-old crater, Page, Arizona dates from the late 1950s, when the Glen Canyon Dam was constructed. Perched above Lake Powell, its vibrant blue water rimmed with barren red sandstone, Page makes an ideal base for visiting the Antelope Canyons. Both are on Navajo lands and can only be entered with a guide. For Upper Antelope

walls contrast magnificently with the clear blue Arizona sky, but we do not linger long. It is too intriguing inside. At Lower Antelope Canyon, known as Hasdestwazi, or “spiral rock arches,” the guide pauses at a plaque near the entrance. Eleven people were drowned in a flash flood in August 1997 when water, 15 metres deep from a thunderstorm in the hills, swept through the canyon. Glad there are no flash flood warnings today, we wiggle ourselves down into a subterranean cathedral. Ladders take us further down into narrowing passages. Frozen waves of coppercoloured sandstone rise straight up. It is brighter in here than in the Upper Canyon, and the walls shine with more colours. Every sensual curve leads to another vista of undulating rock striations. A dry tumbleweed perches on a ledge. A sunbeam passes through a sandstone eye. No wonder the Navajo feel it is a sacred place. It is well worth the squeeze it took to get in here. Canyon, we board open trucks for a bouncy drive across a dusty wash to the entrance. The Navajo name for the Upper Canyon is Tse’bighanilini, meaning “the place where water runs through rocks.” And what a sculptor water can be, wearing away sandstone, grain by grain, in swirling, mesmerizing patterns. It is as dim as a gothic church inside the canyon. The 40-metre walls all but block out light from the sky. At certain times, sun-
beams pierce the dust-filled air to spotlight the sand floor. Weaving our way along the wavy walls, each turn brings a new vista of flowing sandstone and elaborate shapes. Our guide points out the outline of an eagle and a face. I am glad I do not suffer from claustrophobia; passing people in the narrowest spots is a funny dance negotiation. The canyon is not very long and we pop out the other end into brilliant sunshine. The orange

❚JUNIOR A HOCKEY
Two wins have Eagles feeling jolly
The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles are in Sports Editor a happy mood after posting a pair of wins in their final two games before heading into the B.C. Hockey League’s Christmas break. The Eagles edged the archrival Langley Chiefs 3-2 at South Surrey Arena Friday night before hammering the sad-sack Prince George Spruce Kings 7-1 at the same venue the following evening. Surrey has posted a record of six wins, one loss, and one overtime loss in the month of December
to move to within one point of Langley in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference standings. Surrey currently has four games in hand over the Chiefs. On Friday night, Surrey trailed 2-1 after two periods before bagging two goals less than three minutes apart early in the final frame to wrest control of the contest. Eagles’ forward Dale Hunt scored once and set up another to earn first star honours. Richard Vanderhoek and Scott Holm scored the other goals for Surrey. On Saturday night, backup
goalie Andrew Hunt came within five seconds of posting his first BCHL shutout in the lopsided win over the visiting Spruce Kings. The Eagles’ rookie made 18 stops before Lyndon Martell spoiled his shutout bid in the dying seconds of the third period. Surrey special teams dominated the game as the Eagles collected three goals on five power-play chances and added three more tallies while playing shorthanded including two by captain Tyler Morley. Daniel Gentzler scored the
other shorthanded goal for Surrey while Vanderhoek, Dale Hunt and Michael Stenerson netted powerplay goals. Tyler Morley completed his hat trick with Surrey’s lone even strength goal of the evening while his brother Brandon collected four assists in the win. Surrey is now idle until December 29 when the Eagles take on Alberni Valley in Richmond during the annual bantam showcase tournament in that city. The Eagles then close out 2010 by hosting the Nanaimo Clippers on Dec. 30. Game time is 7 p.m.

Phil Reimer’s
golf report
❚ SPORTS
Birds of a feather
Qualifying School for golfers is their major. At that point in their career they will probably not face anything tougher. Stephanie Sherlock of Oakville bore down on the final day of qualifying for the LPGA Tour and with a 72 jumped from 27th to 14th and just made the cut for the tour. Now that’s crunch time golf. Sherlock, sadly, was the only Canadian to make it through. B.C. pros missing the golden ring were Sue Kim of Langley and Kirby Dreher of Fort St. John. **************************************************************************** This should encourage a lot of Lower Mainland kids to take up golf: Eugene Wong of North Vancouver, who is starting his second year at the University of Oregon with the Oregon Ducks, is Canada’s top amateur golfer as selected by Golf Canada. Just look at his record: second in the Canadian Men’s Amateur, tied for fourth in the World Amateur and eighth at the Pacific Coast Amateur. Not only that, he won the Jack Nicklaus award for his play in the NCAA college circuit this past year. A leader at Oregon, he was also a winner during the year. He is currently eighth in the world amateur standings. **************************************************************************** This is like a marriage you expected to go on forever. Mike Weir and his longtime caddie Brennan Little have split, with Little wasting no time finding a new mate. Little will hook up with Sean O’Hair next season on the PGA Tour. Weir and Little have been together 12 years, including wins on the Canadian Tour, the Air Canada Championship, the Masters; it has been a long successful partnership. This might tell us where Weir is as far as his comeback after injuries are concerned. Most importantly, Little has a young family and a caddy is only as financially successful as his player. Little apparently told Weir of his decision after the Shark Shootout a few weeks ago. Weir has a lot of decisions to make in the next few weeks as to how many tournaments he will play this year with his medical exemption. As he pointed out, can he play two weeks in a row without any pain? With all that and now Little’s decision to move on, it’s going to be a tough start for Weir. **************************************************************************** When you think of Wayne Gretzky, you think of gold, as in everything he touches turns to gold. Not so this year. The Nationwide Tour, second only to the PGA Tour in status on this side of the Atlantic, has cancelled Gretzky’s Nationwide event, held the last three years in Ontario. Three fewer tournaments are in the works for next season. Also eliminated was the Australian-New Zealand swing of that tour. Looks like Panama and Colombia are more important than the Canadian market. Wayne Gretzky! Hey Nationwide, don’t you guys realize this is Canada’s Male Athlete of the Century you’re snubbing? Oh well, Gretzky can just go out and buy his own course.
Accompanied by mascot Winger, members of the Surrey Eagles (from left: Bradley McGowan, Jeff Vanderlugt, Daniel Gentzler and Richard Vanderhoek) generated broad smiles from sick children at Surrey Memorial Hospital last week. The Eagles dropped by with more than 300 stuffed toys after the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss promotion on Dec. 10. The event reaped over 600 stuffed toys, which ❚PHOTO/Submitted were then delivered to the kids at Surrey Memorial Hospital and the Salvation Army.
❚HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Warriors second in Edmonton tourney
The White Rock Christian Academy Warriors were no match for Dallas’s Woodrow Wilson High School in the championship game of the annual REB Jasper Place Tournament in Edmonton last week. After battling through a tough draw to reach the final, the Warriors were walloped 117-65 by the Texas class 4A basketball powerhouse. White Rock opened the tournament with a 101-71 win over Medicine Hat. In the semifinal, the
Warriors silenced a boisterous home crowd with an impressive 87-64 win over the Jasper Park Rebels. White Rock’s Jake Newman and Will Ondrik were both selected to the tournament all-star team. ❚ Closer to home, the North Delta Huskies took top spot in the 2010 Ed Terris Memorial Basketball Tournament Dec. 2-5 in North Delta. The Huskies topped St. Patrick’s 71-61 in their tournament opener and then dispatched New Westminster
70-56 in the semifinal round. North Delta then capped the weekend by beating South Delta 75-72 in the title game as Noman Saleem hit the game-winning threepoint shot with 12 seconds remaining in the contest. North Delta’s Jotpal Atwal was named the tournament MVP while Saleem was selected to the first allstar team. The Huskies’ Bavan Phool made the second team along with Richard Bos of Holly Cross.

**************************************************************************** Word has slipped out from several sources that Davis Love and Jose Maria Olazabal will be named team captains for the next Ryder Cup in 2012. The Ryder Cup will swing back to North America, to be played at Medinah. The media had better get ready to work hard. These guys are two of the most stoic on and off the course and with Olazabal, an interpreter will be required. Regardless, both have the credentials to hold down the job. Finally let me wish you all a Merry Christmas and the best of the holiday season. I hope Santa has a sleigh full of golf gear for you, and in my case, please, please some ability to enjoy it all. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

How you drive says a lot about you and how you perceive things like safety, fuel efficiency, the cost of fuel and the role you play in helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The bottom line is we all want to save money and help the environment, right? See if you can see yourself in any of these four driving styles, recently identified by Natural Resources Canada at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca: ❚ Aggressive driver: Accelerates quickly, brakes hard, drives significantly over the speed limit, makes frequent lane changes, passes other drivers whenever possible, tailgates, and is focused on being first; ❚ Rushed driver: Drives and accelerates a little faster than most and sometimes passes other drivers. Always in a rush and is focused on saving time; ❚ Average driver: Drives with the flow of traffic, reacts to other traffic, looking ahead but is not really engaged by the driving task and is more focused on the destination than the drive; ❚ Eco-driver: Accelerates gently, follows the speed limit, anticipates traffic flow, and coasts to decelerate. Considers alternatives to driving, combines trips, monitors fuel consumption, reduces idling, maintains proper tire pressure, and reduces air conditioning use. Focused on safety and saving fuel, the fuel-efficient driver will probably also have more money in his or her wallet! www.newscanada.com

The joy of spark plug maintenance
SERIES
BLOWOUT SALE
Understanding the essential maintenance practices that keep your car running smoothly doesn’t require an extensive automotive background. If you can’t perform the work yourself, knowing when your car needs a visit to your friendly professional technician is just as valuable. One of the primary practices of engine care is spark plug maintenance. The function of spark plugs in a gasoline engine is to ignite the air-fuel mixture that the engine pumps out, thus starting the ignition. But, if one or more of the plugs is malfunctioning or worn out, the engine will misfire. So, to keep your engine functioning properly, changing old, worn or dirty spark plugs should be a priority. Regular spark plugs typically last up to 48,000 km, whereas platinum plugs can last up to 160,000 km. In order to help with optimum fuel efficiency and durability, the Autolite team has provided consumers with three

different sets of spark plugs to choose from. Autolite platinum plugs are designed to reduce gap erosion, decrease engine misfires and have increased durability over the standard copper core plug. Autolite double platinum plugs virtually eliminate gap erosion, also reduce misfires and provide up to 160,000 km of durability. Autolite XP Xtreme Performance iridium enhanced spark plugs have a more focused ignition for better overall ignitability over standard, copper core plugs and optimum performance. “We understand that money is tight these days, but if drivers delay basic auto maintenance it’s going to end up costing them more down the road. That’s why we’ve created three top-of-the-line spark plugs that are designed to provide optimum performance , and we guarantee it!” said Megan Currie for Honeywell Consumer Products Group. Autolite is currently run-
ning the Autolite challenge national consumer promotion that gives do-it-yourselfers the opportunity to put Autolite spark plugs to the test. From March – August, 2010, consumers that purchase four or more Autolite plugs will receive a tear sheet provided by participating retail outlets. Once they register online, consumers are entered for a chance to win a Grand Prize of free gas for a year (Approximate Value: $5,000) and they could even be the daily instant winner of a $50 gas card. Plus, they’ll be covered by the OE-quality performance and the Autolite money-back guarantee. Full contest rules and regulations and details of the guarantee can be found online at www.autolitechallenge.com. More information on spark plugs or instructional videos on how to change your spark plugs are available at www.autolite. com. www.newscanada.com
