Candles help families face emotional Christmas
❚PHOTO/Beau Simpson
SURREY – This will be the first Christmas without a loved one for hundreds of families in our community. The first holiday season after a death in the family is an emotional roller coaster, to be sure. That’s why for more than a decade, the South Surrey’s Victory Memorial Park Funeral Home has held a candlelight vigil to give families hope and courage to get through their first Christmas without their loved ones.
This year’s vigil packed the chapel on Thursday night. While it’s an emotional event, it’s not all about being sad. “I think it’s a mixture of emotions,” said Christine Pattison, who lost her son several years ago. “I think it’s a mixture of sadness, of hope and acceptance. It’s nice and lovely, actually. It gives you a good feeling.” ❚ Read more about the emotional candlelight vigil and what it means to families at thenownewspaper.com.

Man arrested for arson in apartment fire Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter
SURREY – A 28-year-old Surrey man was in police custody Monday, a suspect in what police say was an arson fire in a Guildford apartment block Sunday morning. Surrey RCMP had not released the man’s name before the Now went to press as they waited for Crown counsel to approve charges. One person was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Tenant Cindy Ransom shook her head in disbelief Monday as she surveyed the damage. Halfa-dozen suites at the front of the Bon-Terra Apartments were gutted and melted vinyl siding drooped down the walls looking like icing on a gingerbread house. Ransom recalled the morning the fire broke out in the building at 10736 150th St.
“It was just before 8 o’clock when we heard the bell go off. We were all evacuated, they just told us go get out,” the 14-year tenant said. “The response was really quick. It only took a couple of minutes and we had everything here, fire trucks, police, ambulance.” PHOTO, thenownewspaper.com Deputy Fire Chief John Caviglia said 34 firefighters and an even dozen fire trucks were dispatched to battle the blaze that burned six apartments and caused smoke damage to 11 more. Thirty-eight people had registered for emergency aid by 2 p.m. Monday. Ransom said Coast Mountain provided buses to shelter evacuees and to shuttle them over to an emergency response centre set up in the nearby Guildford Rec Centre. She was taken there and was
given a voucher for a three-day stay at a local hotel. “I just checked in. I was only there for about 10 minutes when I got a call that I could go home.” Her apartment was far enough away from the fire that it sustained no damage, “I was one of the lucky ones who came home to everything intact. Some of these people have nothing now.” Feeling fortunate to escape the effects of the fire, Ransom went to work finding items to donate to her less fortunate neighbours. “I went through everything. I don’t need that, my husband doesn’t need this – everything. I’ve got five bags of clothing, blankets and dishes for people who need them.” Surrey fire officials said anyone wishing to make a donation to help the victims of this fire can drop items at the property manager’s office at the BonTerra.
SURREY – The Mukhtiar Panghali murder trial wrapped up in New Westminster Friday with Justice Heather Holmes expected to deliver her verdict on Jan. 14. The former Surrey teacher is accused of murdering his pregnant wife, Manjit Panghali, and then burning her body. The Crown finished its final arguments on Thursday and the defence’s were heard Friday. Meanwhile, arguments will be heard Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court concerning applications from media outlets, including the Now, seeking access to court exhibits including Panghali’s videotaped interviews with the Delta Police and Surrey RCMP. On Friday defence lawyer Michael Tammen urged Holmes not to let the assumption of his client’s innocence be outweighed by the Crown’s inference of his guilt. Tammen argued that the Crown’s evidence is silent on the exact circumstances of the victim’s death. The Crown’s case, he said, relies only on the evidence of the pathologist who performed the autopsy that she died by manual strangulation. “That is the only evidence in this case as to the cause of death,” he told the judge. Tammen said it would be difficult for her to conclude that the accused had any intention to kill, if she indeed finds Panghali was in any way involved with his wife’s death, and a manslaughter conviction would have to be the “default.” “Whatever the event was that caused death could’ve been started and over in a matter of 30 seconds,” he said. “The fallback is manslaughter.” But on the issue of Panghali being found guilty or not guilty, Tammen argued that
the Crown’s case is founded exclusively on circumstantial evidence, is “highly ambiguous,” and that there are “all kinds of rational and more plausible inferences to be drawn from the evidence.” The defence lawyer addressed the Crown’s presentation of his client’s alleged “post-offence conduct” as “somehow consistent with guilt.” For example, Panghali having waited 26 hours before calling police about his wife’s disappearance, not to mention not contacting many or her friends and relatives. Tammen noted that Manjit Panghali had left home before, and his client would have looked foolish had she checked into a hotel and came back, after he’d called all her friends and relatives. “Imagine how foolish he’d feel?” Tammen said. “Of course he’s not going to make all those calls.” His only refuge would have been to shut off his telephone, Tammen said, as “so many people wanted to be kept in the loop.” Tammen argued that Panghali’s conduct was “quite consistent” with “showing the appropriate level of concern and worry.” He also noted that Panghali had been on prescription medicine at the time that could have affected the way he reacted to people. Tammen also charged that some of the Crown’s witnesses demonstrated “palpable bias” in their testimony, as they were “understandably upset” by the tragic death. It would be “pure folly,” he warned, to think witnesses’ recitation of what Panghali allegedly said to them four years ago was accurate, given memory loss and “bias.” “All that evidence comes with it’s own discrete set of dangers in this court,” he said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey man pleads guilty to child-porn

Delta unveils state-of-the-art fire truck
SURREY – A Surrey man has admitted in court to possessing child pornography. Douglas Wayne Bowers, 61, entered a guilty plea on the first day of his B.C. Provincial Court trial in Surrey Monday. A plea was not entered on a second charge of accessing child porn. The trial was scheduled to last three days. On June 24, 2009, the Integrated Child Exploitation Unit and Surrey RCMP searched Bowers’s south Surrey home and recovered evidence that allowed them to identify a teenage victim residing in B.C. At the time, ICE alleged that Bowers was “another prolific distributor of child sexual abuse images and video online.” A sentencing hearing will take place next year. – Postmedia News
SURREY – A finance company is spearheading a campaign to benefit the Surrey Christmas Bureau that offers donors a chance to double their donation dollars. iFinance president Gord Bylo and company founder Jonathan Mara are challenging Surrey businesses and individuals to make a donation to the bureau, which iFinance will match up to $20,000. The fundraising target this year is $40,000. Surrey Christmas Bureau president Jas Brar says the agency expects to help 1,800 low-income families with hampers and toys. For more information on how you can contribute, call 604-538-5875. You can also donate online at www.ifinancechristmas.ca – The Now
DELTA – A new state-of-the-art fire truck was unveiled Monday at Fire Hall No. 3 in North Delta. The 100-foot aerial platform provides enhanced protection for Delta’s firefighters with its advanced safety specifications, including a cascade air system that supplies breathing air to the platform. With the addition of this truck to Delta’s fleet, firefighters are better equipped to fight fires effectively, said Mayor Lois Jackson. “The addition of this fire truck to Delta’s fleet enhances our ability to effectively serve all residents and businesses of Delta,” Jackson said. The fire truck cost $962,000. It was built in Nebraska and supplied by Safetek Emergency Vehicles Ltd. in Abbotsford.

School days in Surrey may be made longer to cope with growth SURREY – Faced with Marisa BABIC growing student enrollStaff Reporter ment and no money to build new schools, the Surrey school district is looking at extending the school day and developing online learning to cope with the challenges. The options were contained in a report presented to Surrey school trustees by superintendent Mike McKay at the Dec. 9 board meeting. “We can’t create instant school spaces so we must use the space and class time we do have as efficiently as possible,” McKay said. In schools where overcrowding is a critical issue, extended school day timetables could go into force as early as September 2011. Despite declining enrollment in the province, school board chair Laurae McNally noted that the Surrey school district continues to grapple with the pressures that come with robust growth. “With district enrollment increases of more than 1,000 students each year equivalent to one secondary or three medium elementary schools full of students – and no new schools on the horizon for at least another three to five more years, our board must consider ways to manage the classroom spaces as best we can while ensuring a quality education for our stu-
dents,” McNally said. McKay’s recommendations reflect feedback from parents who strongly support the preservation of neighbourhood schools and choice programs. The board also supports McKay’s recommendation to put a cap on expansion and introduction of new programs for the foreseeable future, until the school district is able to support their stability. McKay’s report was released in conjunction with a consultant’s report summarizing five district public forums and an online survey, conducted this fall. In his report, Dr. Bruce Beairsto, a retired Richmond school district superintendent, notes that online learning could alleviate some overcrowding in high schools. Allowing senior students to take some courses online would free up space for new students but Beairsto warns that this option would require “staff who are proficient” in this form of instruction. He also cautions that this type of learning isn’t suitable for all students. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

All residents and business owners are responsible under City By-Laws to treat/clear any accumulated snow and or ice from sidewalks located adjacent to their property as soon as possible to ensure the safety of pedestrians. When clearing sidewalks of snow please do not push snow onto the street as snow ploughs may end up pushing the snow onto the sidewalk area. This may also present a hazard to motorists or cause vehicle access issues. It’s usually best to shovel the snow towards or onto your property if possible.

Surrey residents not convinced that $200M debt is a good idea
BOB RAINEY/ “Sometimes you need to borrow to make things happen, you need to spend money to make money.” The list adds up to a total of $283 million with $83 million coming from city accounts, grants from senior governments and other sources. Most of it, however, will be borrowed. The majority of city council and city finance staff believe the debt can be managed. Guildford resident Donna Westin isn’t so sure. “All you hear is how the economy is bad. I think it was last week I heard
that Ireland had to be bailed out and the Americans are in trouble, too, so how come those guys think Surrey’s different?” Bob Rainey lives in South Surrey. He said it’s not necessarily wrong to borrow for such projects as long as the plan is based on realistic assessment of the city’s ability to repay the debt. “Sometimes you need to borrow to make things happen, you need to spend money to make money. That’s alright as long as they don’t raise taxes too much,” he said. Coun. Tom Gill chairs the city’s finance committee and is a Certified Chartered Accountant. Surrey, he said, has to make these investments now to provide proper services, now and in the future, for the city’s growing population. It was his committee that recommended borrowing the $200 million. “The plan we are putting forward is prudent and fiscally responsible and we will not be increasing property taxes to pay for this new infrastructure.” Westin isn’t convinced. “Yeah, well, let’s wait and see.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

❚ROADBLOCKS
DOUGLAS FIR TREES
Drivers not getting message, police say SURREY – Lower Tom Mainland drivers need to get ZYTARUK Staff Reporter their act together. That’s the word from RCMP traffic cops after launching a CounterAttack campaign during the first week of December. Police have been setting up CounterAttack roadblocks since 1977 in B.C. Still, plenty of booze-addled drivers abound. “The public is not getting the message,” said Supt. Norm Gaumont, responsible for RCMP traffic enforcement in the Lower Mainland. “We focused on the four main issues that cause fatalities and serious injuries – alcohol impairment, speed, seatbelts and intersections,” Gaumont said, “and frankly, the number of charges and violations is disturbingly high.” In three days, 394 speeding tickets were handed out and the vehicles of 17 motorists who were busted for excessive speeding were impounded. Police also handed out 165 tickets for seatbelt infractions.

“Approximately 40 per cent of our fatalities are the result of not wearing a seatbelt or using a child restraint device,” Gaumont noted. Sixty-six drivers were also slapped with driving suspensions or prohibitions for being liquored up. Twenty-four received three-day driving prohibitions, 24 received 90-day prohibitions and three drivers were charged with impaired driving. The RCMP handed out 114 tickets at Lower Mainland intersections for disobeying traffic lights, failing to stop, and turning infractions. Nevertheless, while the RCMP logged plenty of bad driving behavior at the beginning of December, Delta police Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said her force recorded some encouraging results this past weekend. “We don’t see the same number of warns or fails,” she said of impaired driving tests. “More people are passing...we’d like to believe the legislation is deterring people.” tzytaruk@thenownewpaper.com

‘Monster’ arrested for string of sex assaults Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter
VANCOUVER – Police believe they’ve taken a “monster” off the streets after arresting a Vancouver man for a series of sexual assaults in Surrey, North Delta and Vancouver dating back as far as 15 years. Last year, a six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Newton when a man came up to her, her brother and her friend, asking for directions. He pulled out a knife, forced her into some woods and told the boys to follow or he would stab her. They were forced on the ground and told to look away while he molested her. In North Delta, two 14-year-old girls were sexually assaulted at knifepoint in 2007 when a man came asking for directions. He forced them into some woods and molested them, saying he would kill them if they didn’t stay put. In 1995, a 13-year-old Vancouver girl was dragged into a school stairwell and molested at knife point. Chief Const. Jim Chu, of the Vancouver Police, said that victim
has been waiting for justice ever since. Today, she’s 28. “Today, I want to tell her the wait is over,” Chu said Monday. “The monster who committed these crimes left DNA evidence behind at all three scenes. We have tied that DNA evidence to a 42-yearold Vancouver resident. The chances that the DNA doesn’t belong to him are one in a quadrillion.”
JIM CHU/ “The monster who committed these crimes left DNA evidence behind at all three scenes.”
Ibata Noric Hexamer is charged with 23 crimes involving unlawful confinement, sexual assault with a weapon, sexually touching a minor, robbery and uttering threats. Eleven are related to the Surrey victims, eight are related to the Delta case and four to the Vancouver assault. Surrey Mounties and Delta Police helped the Vancouver Police investigate the case over the past 18
months. Vancouver Police Detective Dan Murphy was the lead investigator of “Project Scourge.” “The strength of the victims has inspired us all to continue to press forward toward this successful conclusion,” Murphy said. The special task force was formed after DNA from the Surrey case was linked to the others. “At this point we realized this was a situation that was every parent’s worst nightmare – the realization that this was a serial child sex predator and that he was unidentified, at large and free to re-offend at will,” Murphy recalled. Police had more than 500 “persons of interest” to sift through before finding a match between Hexamer and DNA from the crime scenes. Insp. Bob Usui, of the Vancouver Police special investigation unit, said that while Project Scourge was a “very lengthy and difficult investigation” for police, “nothing compares” to what the victims have gone through. “Our thoughts are with them today as we make this important announcement and we hope they will find a small measure of comfort,” he said.

Hold on – this crazy political ride is not over yet The two coalition parties that have run this province for more than 50 years are at a political crossKeith roads. BALDREY Both the B.C. Liberals and the New Democratic Party face serious challenges when it comes to holding themselves together in order to have a real shot at either keeping power or gaining it. The two parties are now in the process of changing leaders, a situation that can create both positive and negative scenarios for political parties. It can be a chance for renewal, but also a threat to walk down a path of internal destruction. It must be remembered that both parties represent a coalition of interests. The B.C. Liberals inherited the Social Credit party’s “free enterprise” coalition, in which conservatives and liberals put their differences aside to achieve a mutual goal: obtaining, and keeping, political power. The NDP is a looser coalition that combines elements of classic trade unionism, social activism and socialism. The party has long been known for infighting (see: Kwan vs. James) yet has been able to maintain its status as the number two party in the province, always close to gaining power but rarely achieving that goal. The extraordinary events of the past few weeks (where, in unprecedented fashion, both parties took down their leaders at roughly the same time) suggest the leadership races themselves may have a bigger impact on the parties than during a normal state of affairs. Let’s examine the B.C. Liberals first. Of the leadership candidates,
only one – Kevin Falcon – is strongly identified on the conservative side of the spectrum. The rest are aligned on the liberal side, most notably Christy Clark, who has strong ties to the federal Liberal party. Both Falcon and Clark are considered the front-runners, yet both have the most potential of being a divisive force. They are both aggressive, brash politicians who can turn people off as easily as they attract them.
“If the leadership races create a lot of infighting, it may be like a dam breaking, with MLAs suddenly leaving the parties that got them elected.” It’s hard to imagine the party’s right-wing elements working under a Clark leadership with any great enthusiasm. It’s almost equally difficult to imagine the true liberals embracing a Falcon victory. Nevertheless, the free enterprise coalition’s historic ability to rally around a leader who can deliver power cannot be discounted. However, were Falcon or Clark to become the next premier, the party would be facing internal strains not felt since the dying days of the old Socred regime (I’m discounting Gordon Wilson’s few years in power since the party never really became the free
enterprise coalition until Gordon Campbell took over). On the NDP side, emotions will likely remain raw for some time and it’s hard to see the rift that now exists healing anytime soon. Throw in the simmering tensions between those who want to push the party further to the left and those wanting it to be more appealing to mainstream, middleof-the-road voters, and it can be a toxic mess. As well, various factions have been fighting over control of the party for decades and it will likely continue (I note, for example, that NDP mainstay Bob Williams, who was active behind the scenes in getting rid of James, has already declared the next leader cannot come from Vancouver Island. Potential candidate John Horgan, who is from the Island, is therefore already facing a tough enemy.) Mike Farnworth is the supposed front-runner (should he run) but he may be the most centrist of any candidate. This raises an interesting scenario: will the left-wing of the party – which drove James from office – mount an attack on Farnworth, arguably the most popular NDP politician with the voting public? And that brings us to the key question facing both parties: will their members put ideological differences aside in order to pick a new leader who has the best chance of winning an election? History shows the centre-right
side of the political spectrum has been able to do that most often. It is the NDP that more often than not puts self-interests ahead of winning elections. I wrote in this space a few weeks back that the time is ripe for some MLAs to become Independents or join together to create a new political party. The challenge for the two established coalitions is to keep that from happening. If the leadership races create a lot of infighting, it may be like a dam breaking, with MLAs suddenly leaving the parties that got them elected. The political events of the past six weeks have been crazy and unprecedented. But these extraordinary times are by no means over just yet. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC. ite one by far, “not everyone celebrates Christmas.” If those really were the reasons, why can’t the bulletin board say “Happy Hanukkah” one week and “Merry Christmas” the next? It is completely unfair to say, “not everyone celebrates Christmas” because I for one do not celebrate either Eid or Diwali. I am not trying to start a war or create a struggle. I would appreciate it if we did not discriminate against anyone’s traditions or beliefs, including mine.

Christmas wish is for justice The Editor, I read recently that one good way for Christians to prepare for Christmas is to recognize that we are in need of a Saviour. We examine our lives and admit that certain things are beyond our control — that we need help. The hopes of many Delta residents (myself included) that the police would be able to quickly bring to justice the killer of Laura Szendrei have come to nought. It seems to me that our community (not just Christians, but all people of good will) would benefit by acknowledging that we are in need of some help. We wish to feel safe in our community again, and we wish
some degree of consolation for the Szendrei family. Let’s try asking God for help. And let’s get our children to ask, too.

Label of ‘Canadian’ suits me The Editor, Re: “Labelling people is practice I could do without,” the Now, Dec. 10. Columnist Harvinder Sandhu stated she is confused by whether to label herself as Indian, Punjabi or Sikh. At no point did she suggest another label: Canadian. She says she could do without the practice of labelling but is quick to list many different labels that are used for people of Asian origin. The people she is speaking of chose to move to Canada and raise families here. What’s wrong with using “Canadian” as their label? It’s a label I am proud to use. It’s really too bad there aren’t more people who feel the same.

French is fine, thank you The Editor, Re: “RCMP ordered to also post releases in French,” Now, Dec. 3. Canada is a bilingual country,
English and French are our official languages. Canada is one of 52 countries in the world where French is spoken and/or is an official language. Many Canadians speak French and many people from the other French-speaking countries live in Canada. The RCMP is a National organization, it should be able to provide the public, media and other groups with press releases in both official languages in a timely fashion.

Stop dumping on Harper
The Editor, Re: “Harper’s ambush democracy,” the Now letters, Dec. 10. I enjoy reading all the letters sent to you and decided to comment on Phil Harrison’s letter. His letters are always negative about Stephen Harper. I find the prime minister to be a strong leader and family man. My taxes have been reduced for the past five years. I am a veteran of the Second World War and look for the good in people. Mr. Harrison needs to look in the mirror once in a while. Thanks for allowing me to say my piece.

The Editor, I am a Grade 11 student at North Delta Secondary school. When I walked into school Monday morning, I couldn’t help but notice that the bulletin board just outside of our counselor’s office did not say Merry Christmas, but rather Happy Holidays. This bothered me and I will tell you why. Earlier this year the global unity club, which is in charge of this board, had put up displays for Eid, a Muslim tradition, and Diwali, a Hindu and Sikh tradition. That’s not the problem – the problem for me is that they are trying to support global unity and diversity, which I will admit our school is very good at. However, they are not willing to recognize Christmas, a once religious holiday now celebrated world wide by every almost every culture. Christmas is one of Canada’s national holidays and, may I remind you that without it, we wouldn’t be having “winter break” as it is now known. Why are we allowed to have a Christmas tree in the foyer of our school but the board can’t post a simple message of “Merry Christmas?” When I asked the sponsor teachers in charge of the group, I was given nothing but endless excuses such as “it is the students’ idea; there are many holidays around this time” and, my favour-

When baking pies, it’s also important to keep the water and butter very cold a texture much like tender shortbread. This is because the flour particles are more coated with fat, meaning less gluten is formed. Once you have decided on the type of crust to make, it is time to decide on the filling. Basically, there are four choices: fruit, custard, cream or chiffon. All fillings require the existence of a starch or stabilizer to ensure that it holds together when sliced. Fruit and cream fillings use starches, such as cornstarch, for their stability, while custard filling uses the stabilization of eggs coagulation for firmness. Examples of custard pies are pumpkin, pecan and key lime pies. Chiffon pies usually use a combination of starch or gelatin, with whipped eggs whites folded in. Baking is a science and recipes are the formulas. For the reasons listed here and for many others, it is important to follow these recipes exactly in order to have a successful outcome. Whatever pie or other dessert you choose to finish your holiday meals with, I wish you, your families, friends and loved ones all the best in health and happiness this holiday season.
Dear Douglas, The best way of doing this is to first focus on your ingredients. Make sure you are using ice water instead of cold water, and frozen butter grated into the flour mixture is ideal. The frozen butter particles are already the required size from the grater and will not suffer from

the warm friction of too much mixing, or “cutting” it in. Secondly, try not to touch the dough with your hands, as the warmth from them will melt the butter. It is best to form the dough by folding it over consistently with a metal dough cutter (bench scraper). Once the dough is formed, wrap and place it in the refrigerator until thoroughly chilled. Remove and proceed with rolling, ideally on a chilled marble surface. Once shaped,
refrigerate it for approximately 10 minutes before baking. I have even heard that using vodka from the freezer (instead of ice water) will produce a flakier crust! Dear Chef Dez, I have heard and known that it is best to keep pie pastry as cold as possible to prevent melting the butter and shortening pieces. What is the best way of doing this? Douglas C., Langley

The fondest memory I have from my childhood is one that I hold dear to my heart. Fitted with an oversized apron and Chef DEZ a smile from ear to ear, I was six years old, standing on a stool and rolling out pie pastry alongside my mom. While she made the large pies for the family, I rolled out pastry for miniature imitations formed to the confines of empty, metal chip-dip containers. I was very proud and happy to be a part of the preparation for such a wonderful treat. Pies are a very traditional way to end a meal on certain holidays throughout the year, especially at Christmas. For many, pumpkin is always a favourite pie during the holidays, but many different pies can, and will, be made and enjoyed. Pies are basically made of a shell or crust with a flavourful filling, and can be divided into two groups: baked or unbaked. Baked pies are ones with raw pie shells that are filled and then baked. The unbaked category represents pre-baked pie shells filled with a prepared filling and then chilled to set before serving. The pie dough that makes up these shells can also be divided into two categories: flaky dough or mealy dough. Flaky dough is usually a pastry that has a mixture of shortening and butter that is “cut in,” so that there are small chunks still left in the finished product. This aids in creating steam, which helps with the leavening process and, thus, creating the flaky texture. Mealy dough is one that is usually made with butter that is mixed in more thoroughly and, when baked, has

Christmas
Fresh seasonal sounds from Hendrix, Boyle and more ‘Tis the season for holiday music. Of course, a number of high-profile artists have released collections of Christmas music this season. Here are a few of the new releases, plus some favourites from the past, courtesy Sony Music Entertainment Canada: ❚ The cast of TV’s Glee gets into the act with the new Glee, The Christmas Album, released back on Nov. 16. It’s the first collection of holiday recordings from the hit TV show, featuring 12 songs “guaranteed to fill your holidays with glee, including songs from the Glee Christmas episode, which airs Dec. 14 on the FOX network. ❚ Jimi Hendrix’s name is on the new Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year release, which features the celebrated 1969 medley of “Little Drummer Boy,” “Silent Night,” and “Auld Lang Syne” backed with “Three Little Bears.” ❚ Christina Aguilera’s My Kind of Christmas was released 10 years ago, and it still sizzles with a wide variety of styles that more than showcase the artist’s amazing range. The album features hip-hop influenced tracks like “Christmas Time,” spiritually charged songs like, “Angels We Have Heard On High,” and the classic “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” ❚ Back in 2008, A Swingin’ Christmas was sold as Tony Bennett’s first holiday album in 40 years. Recorded live on the stage of Bergen PAC in Englewood, New Jersey, it includes classic holiday tracks like “Silver Bells” and “O Christmas Tree.” ❚ New this year is Susan Boyle’ The Gift, her second album. It sees Boyle and acclaimed producer Steve Mac reunited to present “a breathtaking seasonal album” featuring yuletide favourites “The First Noel” and “O Holy Night.” The talent show-winning Brit also fearlessly takes on iconic
pop songs, including “Don’t Dream It’s Over”and “Perfect Day.” Also consider adding Boyle’s rendition of “Silent Night,” from her first hit album, I Dreamed A Dream, to your holiday celebrations. ❚ Elvis Presley Christmas Duets was the first Presley duet recordings album of its kind when released back in 2008. The CD features many successful female artists, including Carrie Underwood, Anne Murray, and Martina McBride, singing classic Elvis holiday songs with The King himself. ❚ Grammy Award-winning band Train has been heating up the charts and airwaves with its great new album, Save
Me, San Francisco. After the worldwide success of the smash song “Hey, Soul Sister” and recent single “If It’s Love,” Train adds several new tracks on the Save Me, San Francisco deluxe edition, including a live recording of “Hey, Soul Sister,” an intimate piano version of “Parachute,” a brand new Christmas song, plus a live cover of Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella. ❚ Sarah McLachlan’s Grammy-nominated Wintersong holiday album, released in 2006, features the title track and a cover of John Lennon’s classic “Happy Xmas (War is Over).” To date, the album has sold more than 1.1 million copies worldwide. ❚ For the country-mus i c f a n o n yo u r l i s t , consider the Country Heat Christmas 3 compilation, released in 2008. The album is a great collection of Christmas music, with renditions of classics like “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town,” performed by Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Brooks & Dunn and more. ❚ Last year, Bob Dylan released Christmas in the Heart, his very first Christmas release (after 46 other albums). All of Dylan’s current and future royalties from Christmas in the Heart will be donated to the Feeding America organization. ❚ A Cherry Cherry Christmas, also released in 2009, represents Neil Diamond’s third album of Christmas songs, this one featuring old and new classics such as “Joy To The World,” “Winter Wonderland” and the album’s title track.

Christmas
Stop dreaming of a green Christmas – just do it! Consider subverting overconsumption this Christmas by bestowing handcrafted gifts and wrap made with recycled, repurposed or reclaimed materials. With some basic tools, a sewing machine or a well-buttered cookie sheet, you can create unique presents without compromising the holiday spirit. Check out these inexpensive eco-friendly options: VIP’s (vouchers for important people) Print up a booklet of coupons that can be redeemed for time and services. Be creative and include significant bequeaths such as “Four hours of peace and quiet,” “Control of the TV remote for a day,” A promise to be on time for a week, clean doggy-doo in the yard for a month, etc.
glossy upscale wrapping paper by machine-basting pages to create a large sheet. Use bits of tape on back of seams to secure sections while basting. If sewing isn’t your thing, adhere pages together with double-sided tape. Shredded Evidence Shredded newsprint, envelopes, bills or flyers can be used in baskets as filler or cushion for delicate gifts while shipping. Use wider strips of paper to create bows or as an added trim on simply wrapped gifts.
Old magazines can be re-purposed into glossy, upscale wrapping paper.
Thrift Gift Re-gifting gives new lives to gently used objects. Repurpose a book you have read and gift it to someone who shares your taste in literature. Revamp that old chair in the basement with a coat of paint and fresh upholstery for the niece that has just moved into her first apartment. Ho-Ho-Homemade Arrange an afternoon or weekend with friends, family and/or the kids to craft handmade gifts. Recruit materials gathering dust in your cupboards — gently used clothing, sheets, or towels are inexpensive sources of fabric for sewn projects. Think outside the box by using your blue-bag of recyclables or leftover building materials as a source of supplies for various craft undertakings. From home decor elements, to Christmas ornaments, to outdoor embellishments – a handcrafted gift is gift-giving at its best. Season’s Greenings Cookies and chocolates, jams and jellies, nuts and nibblies all add up to happy, smiley faces. Jazz up your gourmet goodies with creative packaging by reusing tins, boxes or bags and embellishing them with kitchen accoutrements or favorite recipes. Assemble seed and feed jars for bird enthusiasts or bake up a batch of yappetizers for pet owners. Stir up some spicy mulled wine parceled in recycled, personalized crates or whip up a cluster of honey lolly-pops for teetotallers and present in monogrammed tea towels. Don’t undo your labours by finishing your gift in traditional wrap. Waste stream volume increases by 25 per cent during the festive season, much of which is recyclable packaging and wrapping paper. Here are five upcycled alternatives: Material World Sew cloth bags from fabric scraps or gently used apparel to present presents. These totes can later play double-duty as reusable shopping bags. Wrap gifts with functional items such as scarves, wraps or tea towels. Simply place gift in center of fabric, then gather the four corners and tie securely.
Sew MAGnificent You’ve been saving all those magazines because you just don’t have the heart to toss them out. Re-purpose them into

B3: Bottles, Bags and Bubble pack Create transparent labels from plastic drinking bottles. Remove top and bottom of bottle and slit remainder of bottle in half. Cut desired shape for label and bore with hole puncher for attachment. Fashion ornate bows from bottle bottoms by shaping with scissors and gently heating edges with a candle or heat gun in a well ventilated area. The plastic will melt into organic silhouettes — perfect for embellishing gifts. Craft bows from shredded shopping bags using the pom-pom technique or use bubble pack to wrap gifts or create gift bags.

It’s mid-winter in British Columbia, time to slip into a warm and cosy suit, grab a board and head for . . . the beach! If surfing giant rollers isn’t your thing when the temperature drops, meander instead through landscapes where tropical-coloured blossoms sway as wildlife peers wide-eyed from between the fronds of a lush garden . . . underwater! OK, so you’re bundled into a dry suit, but who says winter has to be all about ice and snow? In coastal southern BC, temperatures hint at Mediterranean balminess and lavender and rosemary thrive in window boxes year round, so it’s almost possible to forget it’s December, or January, or February . . . Just because BC is rippled with snow-capped ranges doesn’t mean everybody loves to snap into skis – skinny, fat or single board – and challenge their vertical vertigo. That’s not a problem. Either head outside and pretend it’s spring or go play in the snow: virtually every mountain resort offers a varied and growing menu of winter things to do, from tubing - whizzing down a track on an inner tube - to outdoor ice skating, romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides, even ice fishing. Unleashing an inner coureurs des bois is as simple as strapping on a pair of snowshoes, a quintessentially Canadian mode of winter travel; most mountain resorts rent them for a mid-winter stroll amid a forest of alpine trees or to mountain peaks. In the Okanagan, the abandoned Kettle Valley Railway is a country trail where you cross wooden trestle bridges with spectacular views. In the same region, go multi-day snow stomping with Wells Gray Adventures who provide everything from snowshoes to guides on cabin-to-cabin treks through the snowy wilderness of Wells Gray Provincial Park, north of Kamloops. Vancouver’s proximity to the outdoors offers the chance to snowshoe in the woods, with the lights of downtown twinkling in the distance, on Cypress, Grouse and Seymour mountains. In a forest clearing or backcountry lodge at the end of a vigorous walk, adventurists can even opt for a bit of indulgence, with plump strawberries primed for a luscious chocolate fondue. Mt. Seymour also provides twilight tours through the forest, gentle Baby and Me excursions for moms and dads and a chance to crank your cardio on 90-minute snowshoe fitness hikes. Snowshoeing has even gone upmarket amid the Selkirk and Monashee mountains around Revelstoke where Heli Canada Adventures zooms trekkers in a helicopter onto high mountain ridges for a day of heli-snowshoeing, complete with views across glaciers and endless rows of jagged peaks. Or let the dogs do the driving. The traditional northern transport method of dog sledding is making a comeback as a hot new sport; it’s relaxing to sit on a comfy sled and glide through snow-covered forest trails. The folks at Cold Fire Creek Dogsledding in the Kootenay Rockies setting of Valemount even offer mushing by moonlight. Learn to run the reins yourself by joining Canadian Outback Adventures who teach newcomers how to harness and hitch up a troupe of eager

canines before hitting the trails in Whistler’s surrounding Callaghan and Soo valleys. For a rush onboard a sled of a different kind, try snowmobiling. This distinctly Canadian invention - the brainchild of Quebecker Joseph-Armand Bombardier - is perfect for exploring BC’s vast landscapes. Slide into boots, strap on a helmet and hop on board to soar across a glacier near Pemberton or carve tracks in the powder-packed alpine with Totally Awesome Adventures. Take a guided ride – or snow-cat trip – with Canadian Snowmobile Adventures atop Blackcomb Mountain and finish up with chefs serving a three-course candle-lit fondue dinner in the Crystal Hut, a rustic lodge cabin perched at 6,000 feet. Skipping the snow altogether is another option. For scuba buffs, winter on BC’s coast is the time of highest visibility along 27,000 kilometres (17,000 miles) of coastal waters Jacques Cousteau called “the best temperate water diving in the world.” Suncoast Diving, a National Geographic dive centre in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast, allows you to commune with octopi. Drift above colourful sea life at a leisurely pace, poke around the wrecks off Powell River or feel yourself tugged along by the surging current of Skookumchuk Narrows, a tidal channel renowned for sea life on steroids. More fun on the water awaits in Squamish, north of Vancouver. Here, take a wildlife safari aboard a Canadian Outback Adventures’ raft to watch one of the highest concentrations of bald eagles in the world - hundreds of them – gathering from November through February. Watch the birds plunge from treetop perches to pluck migrating salmon from the river. Further north, you can do the flying yourself by soaring above snowy treetops and across streams securely harnessed to a steel cable: Ziptrek Ecotours has made zip-lining a yearround sport at Whistler. The surf goes up as the thermometer drops on the west coast of Vancouver Island where the small town of Tofino has become Canada’s surfing capital. Rollers six-metres (20-feet) high pound long, empty beaches to the delight of surfers seeking the thrill of riding big waves. Guests at Long Beach Lodge Resort can learn the tricks of the trade from the lodge’s dedicated pros at the Surf Club. Additionally, the Pacific Surf School has camps to provide know-how and the female instructor-led Surf Sister Surfing School is dedicated to getting girls onto boards (boys can join, too). Counter-intuitively, keeping your fingers crossed for a storm has become a winter tradition in Tofino for those addicted to that coast’s spectator sport of storm-watching (Official Season: November through March). Enthusiasts head to the west coast, don rain gear and prowl beaches in search of the biggest and loudest thundering waves. Idyllic spots for storm ogling here are as varied as the landscape: curl up in front of a fireplace and watch the raging action from the toasty side of a picture window at the Pacific Sands Beach Resort, nosh on local fare in the fabulously scenic Great Room at the Long Beach Lodge Resort, or be lulled into bliss, courtesy of the pounding surf, during a luxurious hot stone massage at the Wickanninish Inn. After all, après activities are an integral part of winter and they’re as varied as the sports they follow – after a day on the trail, slip into a year round spa in one of BC’s many northern guest ranches like the Williston Lake Resort that shift gears from riding to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Or slide into a natural hot pool surrounded by the Kootenay wilderness at Radium Hot Springs, all fringed in snow and ice and steaming temptingly into the frosty winter sky. At Rockwater, you come first… The Winter Coastal Escape Package is perfect for the two of you to enjoy many beautiful views the coast has to offer while either cross country skiing or snowshoeing on the manicured trails at Dakota Ridge. Former NBA player Michael Dickerson, a one-time member of Vancouver Grizzlies, plans to take one for the team — a pie, that is. This Saturday, Dec. 18, Dickerson (pictured) is putting himself on the pie block for the Pie in the Face of Cancer event, benefiting the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay For Life to help raise awareness in the fight against cancer. The pie-ing takes place at the inaugural Relay For Life Skate with Santa event at Langley Events Centre. Doors open at 10 a.m. and the pie-ing begins at 11:30 a.m. Dickerson will be joined by a number local notables, including mayors, a fire chief, musicians and more. “This exciting partnership with the Langley Events Centre is a great opportunity to bring the community together for a fun, meaningful morning of fundraising and fighting back against cancer,” said Howie Vickberg, volunteer chair of Langley’s Relay For Life. “We encourage members of the public to come and join us for the Santa breakfast and to watch our Pie in the Face Cancer event.” After breakfast, the Pie in the Face of Cancer will begin, each participant will receive one pie in the face and, for every $1,000 they raise leading up to the event-day deadline of 11:30

❚ LIVING ❚TRAVEL/India
Merrymaking in Mamallapuram, ‘Butterball’ and all A small herd of goats has the best view. Irene BUTLER Each evening they assemble at the top of Now Contributor the 12-metre-high bas relief that forms the backdrop to this outdoor stage. The sculptured form of Shiva, a powerful Hindu deity, peers down from near the middle of the relief’s 30-metre width, seemingly amused at the humans twirling to the rhythm of drums and melody of ancient wooden horns. From our stage-level seating we too are captivated. Vibrant orange and gold silk flutters with the exotic movements of winsome young women. Others dip and dive as they balance large clay pots on their heads. Most novel is a machismo display of agile men with bull-horn headdresses who leap into mid-air and butt heads with resounding cracks. My husband Rick and I are among the spectators for the first three days of the annual National Dance Festival in Mamallapuram (aka Mahabalipuram), a village in India’s southern state of Tamil Nadu. Beginning Christmas Day, and over the next four weeks, 1,000 classical and folk artistes entertain international visitors, as well as vacationing Indian families taking advantage of the school break. With performances engaging our attention in the evenings, our days are spent exploring the village. Although a predominantly Hindu country, it’s apparent that Yuletide is joyfully celebrated here. The hotels and markets are elaborately decked out with garlands, wreaths, lights strung on imitation pine trees, nativity scenes, and the occasional Santa. Seeing the exquisite bas relief in the light of day is a must. It is known as Arjuna’s Penance or Descent of the Ganges (depending on who you talk to). Our guide, Dharma, points out the key figure. “Arjuna is balanced on one leg with arms upraised in ‘penance’, which in the Hindu religion does not mean repentance, but rather a gaining of power over the gods.” Arjuna’s motive was to garner the sword from the towering figure of Shiva beside him, in order to kill his enemies. The second name of this relief, Descent of the Ganges,

stems from the huge furrow in the middle of rock that is believed to be where the god Shiva brought the holy river down to earth. Our imaginations soar as Dharma spins tales of the 100 sculptured forms surrounding the central figures, depicting lesser gods, humans, flying creatures, and animals — including two life-sized elephants. It is then on to the temple ruins, which are within walking distance. En route I stop abruptly and gasp at the sight of a giant hilltop boulder that looks as if it might tumble any minute. Children are sitting tucked under the base for the shade it provides, while others gleefully slide down the hillside in line with the boulder. “This is called Krishna’s Butterball, and don’t worry, several elephants were once used in an attempt to dislodge it, to no avail, it is immovable,” Dharma says reassuringly. He then leads us to a spot where we can see the boulder’s slight backward tilt; but regardless of physics’ laws I would not
entertain being beneath its gigantic looming bulk. The Shore Temple is weathered by wind and sea, yet a remarkable amount of carvings remain, especially inside the shrines for Shiva and Vishnu. Its two pagoda-style towers are now protected from further erosion by a rock wall. “Most of the rock-carved temples in Mamallapuram were completed in the 7th century, when this was a major port for the ruling Pallava dynasty,” Dharma says, upon entering the next site, the Five Rathas. Lions and a life-sized elephant are regally poised to guard the entrance of these monolithic temples resembling chariots. Numerous deities, as well as scenes of everyday life, such as women weaving, young girls primping and pompous dignitaries are sculpted on the stone walls. We are awed by the preservation of these spectacular monuments, which were hidden in sand until excavated by the British 200 years ago. Over a thousand years later, the tapping of hammer and chisel still goes on along the dusty streets of this village that is renowned for its stone carving. We stand riveted watching artisans chip granite blocks into animal forms and gods destined for temples around the world. On our last evening Dharma, our hotel manager, along with their families surprise us with a farewell supper in the restaurant. The extraordinary sights, sounds and activities of this Holiday Season swirl through my mind, along with the good will and friendship of the people we have encountered during this memorable Mamallapuram Christmas.

Eagles bow to Kings’ power play
Sports
For the third time in as many Michael BOOTH outings, the Surrey Eagles held Sports Editor their own with the team many consider to be not only the best in the B.C. Hockey League, but the best junior A squad in the country. The Powell River Kings visited South Surrey Arena Friday night and for the first time this season, the Sunshine Coast crew left town with a win at the expense of the Birds. Powell River struck for two goals during a third period power-play and skated away with a 3-1 win. “It was a really good test for us because they are ranked No. 1 in Canada right now,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “We played shot-for-shot with them, especially when it was five-on-five. The game had almost a playoff-type feel to it with the tight checking and the intensity. Apparently we were the only team in the Coastal Conference they hadn’t beaten this year until Friday. “We’re right there with them, we just have to figure out how to take the next step and getting the wins in these games.” Powell River held a 1-0 lead late in the second period when Surrey’s Colton Mackie was handed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for a hit from behind. The lengthy Powell River power play carried over into the third period and for a moment, it looked like Surrey would actually come out ahead thanks to a shorthanded goal by Brandon Morley. The Kings were unaffected by the turn of events, however, and netted a pair of goals two minutes apart to reassert their control of the proceedings. Despite the loss, Erhart said the game was encouraging for the Eagles as it only leveled the overall season record between the two sides at one win, one loss and tie each. “Our team seems to play well against the top teams,” Erhart said. “I guess when it’s a tighter checking game, we seem to play better. Teams like Powell River are a good measuring stick for where we’re at and where we want to be. We play them two more times in January so we’re going to take care of business before then but we’re looking forward to going into Powell River and see what we can do there.”

Mountford passes away at 67 Lower Mainland). Mountford was honoured as a builder with Football B.C. and in 2009, he was feted as a pioneer of the game at the Orange Helmet Awards. “I was at the Orange Helmet Awards when he got his award and I was pretty proud of him, as I’m sure many people were,” Swartz recalled. “For 1,000 people who were in that room that night to give him a standing ovation, it was amazing. Rob was so proud and happy and humble, all at the same time. He was basically speechless. It was a pretty emotional moment for anybody who knew Rob and he deserved the recognition. He fit the bill for the description of the award.” A memorial for Mountford will be held in January.
Let’s face it: They both deserve it. Both won one of the world’s majors and both were on the successful European Ryder Cup team. Both rank in the top three in the world.
Eagles work OT to beat Express Surrey opened the week with a 5-4 overtime win on home ice Wednesday against the pesky Coquitlam Express. The Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the first period before rallying with four straight goals to take a two-goal lead early in the third. This time it was Coquitlam’s turn to rally
with two goals of their own to force overtime. Riley Sweeney’s second power-play goal of the game on the only shot of the extra session finally secured the win for the Eagles. Robert Lindores, Richard Vanderhoek and Michael Stenerson scored the other Surrey goals. The Eagles close out the pre-Christmas sched-
ule with two more home games this weekend. Surrey currently trails second-place Langley by one point in the BCHL’s Coastal Conference standings but can make that up Friday night when the Chiefs visit South Surrey. The Eagles then host Prince George the following evening. Game time both nights is 7 p.m.
With prize money improving in Europe and with the Europeans moving first into Asia, there is really no reason for European players to join the PGA Tour. While many feel they need to win once on the PGA Tour, as Colin Montgomerie tried so hard to do and failed, in this day and age do they really have something to prove? I remember when Greg Norman proposed a World Tour some 10 years ago and was virtually blackballed by golf’s U.S. power elite. Turns out that Greg was right on when he came up with the concept. The two tours will be fighting for plum tournaments outside their respective regions, but when it comes to equality it has been reached and the Europeans, at least for now, are defending more majors in 2011 than the Americans. For the first time in golf history, six golfers will represent this country on the PGA Tour. We ran out of time last week to tell you that Chris Baryla and Matt McQuillan got in the hard way through Qualifying School and are now the proud possessors of that all-important PGA card. While its difficult to obtain the card, it’s even more difficult to hang on to it once you’re there. Joining Baryla and McQuillan will be veterans Mike Weir (who is just coming back from injuries after playing in only 19 tournaments this year), Stephen Ames (same story here: injuries ended his season early), Graham de Laet (starting his second year on tour and was the best of the Canadians last year) and David Hearn (who won his card by finishing in the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour).

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

If the average fuel consumption of a vehicle in Canada is 10.6 litres/100 km - at $1.00/litre it costs $10.60 to travel 100 kilometres. Increasing your speed to 120 km/hr will use 12.72 litres/100 km or $12.72 to travel 100 kilometres. That’s like throwing a toonie out the window every 100 kilometres or every hour! If your trip takes you 10 hours each way, there’s $40 you could be spending on something else. EcoDriving is a smart, safe and fuelefficient way to drive because it saves you money, it’s easy to do and it reduces greenhouse gas emissions. NRCan has more EcoDriving tips and tools on its website at www.vehicles.nrcan. gc.ca. www.newscanada. com

If you’re planning a road trip this holiday season, try to avoid the temptation of speeding to get you there faster. Experts have proven that driving over the speed limit, even by as little as 10 to 20 kilometres an hour, is like throwing money out the window and results in minimal time saved. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), a 100-kilometre trip will take you 60 minutes at 100 km/hr and 50 minutes at 120 km/hr.

Christmas is upon us and Canon has revealed its new line-up The 60D provides speed, quality and versatility in a compact well made SLR. The 60D provides superb image quality and doubles as a HD video camera! The SX30IS may make vacations obsolete. Instead of flying to Hawaii just point the SX30IS across the ocean and zoom in! Maybe I exaggerate but the 35X optical zoom lens is truly remarkable. Image stabilized too! For those looking for the best image quality from a compact camera, I suggest the S95IS. Well made, big sensor, fast lens and great pictures. HD video too!
