❚POLITICS/New Democrats thrown into disarray with infighting

James resigns as NDP leader

SURREY – The provinTom cial NDP is a house divided ZYTARUK after embattled party leader Staff Reporter Carole James resigned Monday, at the behest of 13 of the 34 MLAs in her caucus. Vancouver MLA Jenny Kwan led the charge for her resignation last week and James responded by defiantly refusing to step down. But after a weekend of negotiation, James conceded defeat Monday and resigned, she said, in the “best interests” of her party and British Columbians, saying her “time

and energy” had been consumed by the infighting. James has been NDP leader since Nov. 23, 2003, when the party had only two MLAs. “I’ll be stepping down pending the election of an interim leader,” she said. “That decision will be made in the new year.” Surrey’s NDP MLAs took her resignation badly. “I think it’s tragic,” said Sue Hammell, MLA for Surrey-Green Timbers. The veteran MLA called James

“an amazing leader” and is bewildered that some “malcontent” MLAs wanted her resignation after she’d taken the party to an approval rating of 49 per cent in the polls. “Somehow that’s not good enough?” an exasperated Hammell asked. Hammell said James demonstrated a tremendous capacity to lead under pressure, but “the burden of those sustained attacks, as erroneous as they were, the weight was too heavy.” “Exactly who will fill the void, I’m not sure.”

Harry Bains, NDP MLA for SurreyNewton, said there’s “no doubt” in his mind James “would’ve been a great premier.” “I’m actually more shocked than disappointed,” he said of her resignation. Bruce Ralston, NDP MLA for SurreyWhalley, said James’s “immense energy” had helped revive the party from its “near death” experience earlier this decade. Newton brawl puzzles Surrey police SURREY – Mounties are still trying to figure out what sparked a brawl in Newton Saturday night that involved 20 men and shots being fired. Remarkably, only one person – a 22-year-old Surrey man – was injured. He is recovering from facial injuries apparently from a beating, police said. The incident happened at about 8 p.m., near 128th Street and 84th Avenue. Shots were fired and Mounties found a few shell casings at the scene, but no evidence of anyone being hit by bullets. The victim’s name has not been released, but police say he’s “known to them.” No one had been arrested by press time. Anyone with information can call RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Abandoned car found but Johal still missing SURREY – Police found Sarabjit Johal’s Toyota Camry abandoned in New Westminster on Saturday night but at press time were still looking for the 21-year-old Surrey woman, who has been missing since Sunday, Nov. 28. Johal was last seen at about 3:30 a.m., driving away from her house near 126th Street and 91A Avenue in Newton. She was wearing white pajama bottoms, a pink T-shirt and green jacket. Police say her family is very worried about her as her disappearance is out of characSARABJIT JOHAL ter. They are reportedly offering a $10,000 reward. Johal is five feet six inches tall, 146 pounds and has her long brown hair most likely in a ponytail. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.

Police on the look-out for drunk drivers SURREY – ’Tis the season for cop roadblocks. The annual Winter CounterAttack impaired driving campaign is underway from now until New Year’s Eve. “Although the fatality and injury rates are decreasing, the ultimate goal is not to have any alcohol-related collisions,” said Cpl. James Chung, of the RCMP’s “E” Division Traffic Services. CounterAttack was first introduced in B.C. in 1977. According to RCMP statistics, 133 people are killed and 3,400 people are injured in roughly 5,600 impaired driving crashes each year.

Garbarge story requires correction A story in Tuesday, Nov. 30 issue of the Now contained incorrect information about changes to White Rock’s garbage collection services. The story should have stated that recycling, which is currently collected bi-weekly, will be collected weekly under the new scheme. Yard waste collection, which will include food scraps, will also be collected weekly in the new year. The Now apologizes for any inconvenience. – Compiled by staff

Nearly four hours after being called to the scene Monday morning, Delta firefighters were still putting water on a fire at 11440 95A Ave. where a grow-op was discovered just days earlier. ❚PHOTO/Ted Colley

House fire caused by former tenant after police bust grow-op NORTH DELTA – A Newton family Tom ZYTARUK is living a landlord’s nightmare after a Staff Reporter house they own in North Delta all but burned down on Monday morning. “I hope the government can help us on this issue, legally or emotionally, I don’t know,” Jason said, on behalf of his mother, who owns the house. He asked that their last name not be published. The Delta police drug section raided the house they were renting out, in the 11400-block of 95A Avenue, Wednesday. Police seized about 2,400 marijuana plants from the house, which had been rented just three months ago. A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s were arrested and are facing possession, production and trafficking charges, as well as charges for stealing electricity. Both were released on a promise to appear in court in the New Year. Their names have not been released. Delta bylaw officers posted a “no occupancy” order on the house after BC Hydro cut the electricity in response to the grow-op and power theft. Delta police say the accused man returned to the house on Sunday, despite the order, and finding the electricity

cut tried to heat the place by lighting a small charcoal fire. Delta firefighters put out the fire and told the man to amscray. Paul Eisenzimmer, an acting sergeant with the Delta police, said the woman “was not involved, to my knowledge.” Battalion Chief Bob Gillies of the Delta fire department said firefighters were called to the house for a second time, at about 7 a.m. Monday, after the accused returned and lit a larger fire, again with briquettes. This fire did severe damage, eating half the roof. Eisenzimmer said the man was arrested for arson by negligence. “This event gives both the Delta police department and the Delta fire and rescue services the opportunity to remind citizens that it is extremely unsafe to try to heat your home in colder weather or during a power outage by any means other than an approved and properly installed fire place or wood burning stove,” Eisenzimmer said. “The use of charcoal or propane barbecues can be lethal.” On Monday, the owners were reeling. Jason said they “did everything to make sure” they were renting the house to a good tenant. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Bargain hunters now have a new place to search with Thursday’s nationwide launch of daily deals website, Swarmjam.com. The freshly launched Postmedia Network Inc. website provides consumers with unique deals in 36 communities across Canada, including the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. “This is the fastest growing category online,” said Alvin Brouwer, President, Business Ventures, Postmedia Network, which owns this newspaper. He said Postmedia Network’s dozens of established newspapers and news websites put the company in the perfect position to

create a buzz among local shoppers, and its large sales force is capable of securing sweet deals from local vendors. “Consumers are always looking for a good deal, particularly at this time of year. And our advertisers are interested in new ways to engage customers. Swarmjam is the best of both worlds,” said Brouwer. “It’s also a great way for a consumer to try a new business for a lower price.”

Swarmjam will offer discounts on things like bowling, white water rafting, haircuts, manicures, fast food and massages, he said. “Swarmjam is all about local deals, from local business, in a safe trusted 24/7 ecommerce environment,” said Mike Rutigliano, Vice President of Advertising Sales and Digital Media for Postmedia Community Publishing. “We are very excited to demonstrate how print and online work together to drive results, and effectively match up the buyers and sellers with great local trusted deals.” Each publication day, members are emailed the deal — which will be available for a limited time. If they want in, they pay

for it on the site with a credit card. Once enough people have bought the deal, they receive their voucher. The site is powered by CityXpress, which has been live in Vancouver for a couple of months. Thursday’s launch takes the site national. “We think it’s good for consumers, we think it’s good for vendors and we think it’ll be good for Postmedia,” said Brouwer. “Our goal, longer term, is to be best in class.” To access Swarmjam, go to swarmjam. com, or enter the site via the Now’s home page at thenownewspaper.com. – Postmedia News

❚SURREY SCHOOL BOARD

Heather Stilwell loses cancer battle

SURREY – Former Marisa BABIC long-time Surrey school Staff Reporter trustee Heather Stilwell has died after losing a fight to cancer. Stilwell died at her Cloverdale home on Friday at the age of 66. Surrey school board chairwoman Laurae McNally said Monday she was deeply saddened to learn the news of Stilwell’s passing. McNally said she saw Stilwell just three weeks ago when she, along with district staff, gave her a tour of the new $29-million District Education Centre, a facility that Stilwell had strongly supported when she was at the board table. Although she was frail and in a wheelchair, McNally said Stilwell’s spirits soared when she set eyes on the gleaming new building which is slated to host its first school board meeting next September, without her there. “She loved it, she was just beaming,” McNally said. A polarizing figure, Stilwell had her fans and critics. For many people, she’s strictly identified with the highly controversial gay book ban more than a decade ago. Stilwell was on the Surrey school board in 1997 when the board banned the use of three books depicting same-sex parents from kindergarten and Grade 1 classes. Surrey teacher James Chamberlain and others launched a legal challenge of the board’s decision, and the lengthy legal wrangling eventually wound up in the Supreme Court of Canada. Mary Polak, Minister of Children and Family Development, served on school board with Stilwell for a number of years,

including during the gay book ban saga. Polak, also a close personal friend, said Stilwell leaves a rich legacy and that it would be an injustice to judge her solely on the gay book controversy. “It would be a disappointment to her if that was the main thing people remember of her time there,” Polak said. Polak said Stilwell was her mentor when she was a neophyte trustee. She also credits Stilwell’s influence for her later jump to provincial politics. “There is no question that without Heather’s influence I certainly would never have HEATHER STILWELL entered politics,” she said. Polak said Stilwell was a champion of parents’ rights in education. McNally noted that Stilwell was a strong supporter of building the Bell Centre for Performing Arts as part of Sullivan Heights Secondary school. She almost single-handedly introduced Traditional Schools to the district. She was also tagged as the “bag lady.” With her team of volunteers, Stilwell sewed book bags for Surrey school kids to promote literacy. Prayers for Heather Stilwell will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at Precious Blood Parish in Cloverdale. The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Precious Blood Parish at 17475 59th Ave. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

❚ NEWS ❚EDUCATION

Special needs challenge grows, teachers blame poor funding SURREY – Classes in Marisa BABIC the Surrey school district Staff Reporter with more than three special needs students are on the rise, according to a staff report. The report, which details class size and composition data for the 2010/11 school year, shows that the percentage of elementary classes with more than three students requiring an Individual Education Plan (IEP) was 13.3 per cent for the 2010/11 school year, compared to 10.9 per cent for 2009/10 and 8.9 per cent for 2008/09. Similarly, the percentage of high school classes with more than three IEPs has risen to 20.3 per cent, compared to 17.1 per cent in 2009/10 and 15.7 per cent in 2008/09. The figures are contained in a report on class size that school districts must file annually with the Ministry of Education. School board chairwoman Laurae McNally says meeting class size legislation is always a tough job in a school district with growing student enrolment. “It’s a real challenge for us in Surrey when we’re growing and adding new students every day,” McNally said. McNally said better assessment and classification of students with special needs is contributing to the rising figure.

Surrey Teachers’ Association president Denise Moffatt blames the provincial government for its failure to provide enough funding to meet the educational needs of these students. “Surrey has always spent more than allocated by the provincial government to provide special needs services but it’s not enough,” Moffatt said. “We want to see the level of support from the provincial government increase so that we can have appropriate learning conditions.” According to the Ministry of Education, the government has allocated $834 million for school districts next year to support students with special needs, an increase of 60 per cent since 2000/01. The report also shows that elementary classes comply with provincial class size legislation. The average kindergarten class size is 18.7 just under the legislated maximum of 19. The average for grades 1-3 is 20.8 students and the legislated maximum is 21, and the grades 4-7 average is 25.8, with the legislated maximum of 28. A total of 60 high school classes exceed the 30-student limit, although many of those are classes such as band and choir. mbabic@thenownewspaper.com

Guy Gentner, NDP MLA for Delta North, identified himself as one of the “baker’s dozen” that wanted James to step aside. All the same, he seemed shaken by her sudden resignation. “It is a difficult time for our party,” he said. “I’m in turmoil myself. The party’s fumbled the ball.” Gentner thanked James for her leader-

❚ NEWS ❚SURREY

SURREY – Surrey fire investigators still haven’t released the cause of Tuesday’s fatal house fire that killed two little girls, but say it doesn’t appear to be suspicious. Officials expect to wrap up their investigation this morning (Friday) and expect to announce the results later in the day. Despite the heroic efforts of neighbours, Sajel Saroya, 4, and her two-year-old sister, Priya, perished as flames engulfed the upper story of the family home in 9400block of 125th Street around 6:30 Tuesday morning. Cries for help alerted neighbours to the fire. As they came out onto the street to see what was happening, they saw the children’s parents up on the roof over a

veranda at the front of the house begging for help getting their daughters out of an upstairs bedroom. Neighbours rushed to help and were soon joined by firefighters as they tried in vain to rescue the girls who succumbed to their injuries. Another seven people were rescued from the flames with five suffering unspecified injuries. One firefighter was taken to hospital with serious injuries, suffering first-degree burns to 30 per cent of his body. Neighbours said the Saroyas lived in the upstairs portion of the house, while tenants lived in the basement. – Ted Colley

❚POLITICS

The palace coup against NDP leader Carole James may have succeeded in removing her from the leadership, but Keith BALDREY it has created a giant crack in the unity of the party. It also raises serious doubts about the party’s ability to govern. Make no mistake: the 13 socalled “dissident” MLAs have inflicted enormous damage on their party and on their colleagues. While there’s no question James’ weak leadership was a challenge for the NDP, the method used to take her out will leave scars that run deep within a party that prides itself on embracing, among other things, giving women real political power. The party has been trying to portray itself as the “government in waiting.” This is an important image to craft, as voters have to be sure they are putting a responsible, competent bunch of people in office, with control over everything from the health-care system to environmental protection to taxes. Instead, the internal meltdown has portrayed the party as a clownish bunch willing to bend to the will of a minority driven by self-interest rather than the greater good of the majority. Can you imagine behaving that way in government? Would an NDP premier give in to 13 dissidents in the caucus who were upset by a policy position agreed to by the majority? The dissidents have been described by some of their colleagues in the NDP caucus as behaving like “anarchists” and have proven impossible to deal with. One of the dissidents, Harry

now

NDP isn’t instilling voters with confidence

Lali, has said this whole episode shows it is the end of “party discipline.” Given that – and given that his dissident colleagues appear to agree with him – how does James’ successor fare any better dealing the caucus? Jenny Kwan’s suicide-bomber approach to forcing James out of office should give everyone in the caucus who is considering becoming interim leader serious pause for concern. What guarantee does anyone have that Kwan will not pull a similar stunt against them? Indeed, Kwan and her colleagues’ nuclear attack against James has wounded the credibility of those who backed James. The top talent of the NDP caucus (which does not include any of the dissidents, by the way) has been tainted by the anti-democratic actions of the minority. So how does the NDP get it together from here? Well, unless the Gang of 13 agrees to work within a caucus environment, the party has no chance of moving forward. Even if they do come back to the fold, the relations between them and their caucus colleagues have become toxic. One reason for the visceral relations is that a male-dominated

minority has forced a woman leader, who was supported by the majority, from office. Nine of the 13 dissidents are male. You can imagine the anger over this development that is now seething in certain quarters of the NDP, which was supposed to be a champion of feminist causes. To be sure, James’ leadership was dogged by questions about her ability to lead and her ability to win. But none of her detractors could point to any current evidence that there was no way she could win the next election. Poll after poll has the NDP well ahead of the B.C. Liberals. While James has long had trouble with her approval ratings, so did Gordon Campbell while he was winning three elections. In the end, this was all about a faction of the NDP unwilling to give up control of the party and resisting James’ attempts to modernize it and move it more to the political centre. The shame of this is that it may well cost the NDP the next election. There is no doubt many people out there who do not want to give the B.C. Liberals a fourth term are now forced to look in despair at an alternative that is broken and, for now anyway, somewhat discredited.

James may well have won the next election, as the centre-right coalition of the B.C. Liberals is showing its own signs of cracking. But now we’ll never know for sure. The NDP now has to go through a potentially agonizing leadership race of its own. How’s this for a scenario: the next B.C. Liberal leader calls a snap election in March, catching the NDP either leaderless or engulfed with bitter internal strife. If the NDP loses the next vote, the party can look back at the minority-led coup that took out its first female leader as it searches for the reason for the loss. RCMP’s new language policy is ‘absolutely insane’ for B.C.

Hans G. Schmidt, Surrey

Policing should be in English only The Editor, Re: “RCMP ordered to also post releases in French,” the Now, Dec. 3. The RCMP have an unprecedented host of major management and morale problems far more pressing than the French language police. Wake up Ottawa! Moreover, RCMP top

brass seem to have lost sight of the fact this once unique, much heralded police force recognized their first duty was to the people they serve and protect. In B.C., they are not French and we simply do not have the funds nor the time to include all Asian languages now forming large percentages of our populace. As in aviation, the universal language of policing should be English – full stop. It will be beneficial to have a more integrated police force responding to the international mix of our citizens, but all of Canada will be better off when all of its citizens are competent to read, write and speak English.

One word sums up RCMP policy The Editor, Re: “RCMP ordered to also post releases in French,” the Now, Dec. 3. Ridiculous!

L.E. Tapley, Surrey

I’m sorry for almost killing you The Editor, I am writing to apologize to an elderly South Asian couple I almost ran over and killed on Dec. 5. I just felt so guilty that I just had to write this letter. I was making a left turn on 128th Street and 80th Avenue in Surrey. I had come to a stop and I even waited for cars to pass. I was not in a hurry and I did not rush. There were no other cars coming but when I made that left turn, I did not check the crosswalks properly. The elderly couple was in my blind spot. My motherin-law’s screams brought my car to a stop mere centimetres from the couple. I was so shocked. I could not believe that I did not notice them. I was not under any influence of drugs or alcohol. I was not talking or texting on my cellphone. I was lost in my own thoughts – at that time I was praying to God and was on my way to the temple. I am so sorry not just to the elderly couple but to their family. I had become a stupid, foolish, idiotic (and any other name in the book) driver. I am sorry for not stopping and apologizing to you two

personally. I was just so shocked. I am sorry for frightening you. Thank you, God for saving their lives. Thank you, God for helping a young mother from committing a horrible sin. And thanks to my mother-in-law who was alert and yelled in time. I also want to apologize to my community for almost taking away precious lives and especially for my idiotic foolishness.

Mandy Sarai, Surrey

Falcon is nothing but a UFO The Editor, Thank you for reporting that Kevin Falcon is joining the Liberal leadership race, for many of his Cloverdale constituents were not sure that he existed. Like a phantom, he hovers over hospital diggings and flies into photo-ops but is impossible to see in the flesh. He is a new type of UFO, Unidentified Flying Officeholder – moving in higher circles, alien to the people on the street.

The Editor, Re: “RCMP ordered to also post releases in French,” the Now, Dec. 3. This is absolutely insane to have all the press releases in both languages. This is an English-speaking province and I wonder if they have all the RCMP press releases in English in Quebec. Who is going to pay for the extra translators that will be needed? Ottawa and the taxpayers? Forget about French here in B.C., there are not enough French-speaking people here – although they scream loud enough when it does not go their way.

A long road to success in fiction

Living

❚BOOKS/ ‘Gateway drug’ of Nancy Drew adventures led her to career in crime novels

Glass artist turns up heat Saturday at Port Kells studio

Author Hilary Davidson.

travel writer who has moved to Spain, in part to gain some distance from her drug-addict sister and only living relative, Claudia. But Lily is called back to New York to identify her sister’s body, who was found dead in the tub of Lily’s old apartment on the anniversary of their mother’s suicide years earlier. Things get very strange very quickly because at the morgue, Lily is shown the body, but it is not Claudia. Soon they discover an impostor seems to have taken over Claudia’s identity and moved into her apartment. The police, of course, are less than thrilled at the turn of events, particularly considering the real Claudia may have turned up at the apartment on the day of the impostor’s death, not that anyone can find her to ask. Lily, whose father died when she was 13, has had a lifetime of watching out for Claudia and covering up her unstable mother’s problems too. She can’t quite bring herself to trust the police, especially not when it begins to look

a lot like Claudia might be a suspect. Lily’s former fiancé, who she ditched before fleeing for Spain, suddenly shows up and insists on helping with the hunt for Claudia. Things are complicated by both Lily and Claudia’s pasts, and not made any easier when the ex-fiancé’s son seems to have more than a passing interest in Claudia’s whereabouts, too. All those years Davidson spent in travel journalism have paid off in her debut novel. The characters, who hail from around the globe, are each quite real in how they act, speak and in the cultural heritage they bring with them — an accomplishment that’s no small feat. Davidson said she did a whole draft focusing on getting the dialogue and details of each character’s culture just right. It may be a crime novel, but The Damage Done is as much about family ties, relationships and the pressure of change. Hopefully it’s the first of many from Davidson. ccooke@thenownewspaper.com

Hilary Davidson is one of Carolyn COOKE those overnight successes you Staff Reporter hear about — it being years in the making. The Canadian author, who now calls New York home, said she knew from a young age what she wanted to be. “Writing fiction is the very first thing I could ever remember wanting to do,” she said during a recent interview from Toronto. She was introduced to the mystery genre by her grandmother, who began buying her Nancy Drew novels when she was six. Davidson joked that Nancy Drew is the “gateway drug” because so many crime writers got their first taste of the genre there, before moving on to Agatha Christie and darker works as well as detective stories like Raymond Chandler or Robert B. Parker. But since penning fiction didn’t seem to be a solid career choice, after university Davidson went into editing, a career she gave up after three years. “I was working with lovely people,” she said, “but I did not enjoy the work at all.” What followed was 12 years of writing nonfiction, travel journalism in particular. She’s written for major magazines as well as writing 18 travel books, generally guides that don’t even have her name on the front. It did, however, give her the chance to travel and meet people from around the world and that, oddly enough, pushed her back to her first love of fiction. “I felt compelled to do it in part because I would find these amazing stories while I was on the road that would never work into these magazine pieces. I was always writing these very happy, shiny honeymoon stories or family travel stories or business travel stories, which are very practical, but nobody wants to hear about some cool burial ground that you found or some amazing piece of monster lore. “It threw me back into fiction and forced me to do what I’d always dreamed of doing.” At first she started with short stories, and eventually had some published. One, included in a best-of anthology of mystery short stories, was spotted by a literary agent who tracked her down and asked if she was working on a novel. Unlike most writers, Davidson had an eager agent awaiting her first manuscript, which is the newly published mystery The Damage Done. It tells the story of Lily Moore, a successful

ture called the Western Fair Story Tree. Already, I could see agricultural animals and birds, a clown and a Ferris wheel taking shape. Wenzoski’s work is part of an innovative program started in London, Ontario, in 2006. Instead of putting large trees that have reached the end of their life through the wood chipper, they are being transformed into beautiful pieces of art.

Wenzoski has turned a dead tree into a crusader knight in full battle armour, another into a blue jay beside a waterfall and more. With brochure in hand, I was on the Tree Trunk Tour, strolling from one inspirational tree sculpture to another. The tree carvings are helping to highlight the many identities of London. It’s a city of history, starting from when Lt.-Gov John Graves Simcoe picked it as the capital of Upper Canada (sadly, its position was usurped by Toronto) and is infused with museums of every ilk. The centerpiece, Museum London, sits on the banks of the Thames and houses not only a treasure trove of history but also a vibrant art gallery. Fanshawe Pioneer Village depicts the life of early settlers and holds War of 1812 reenactments. At Banting House National Historic Site you can see how Frederick Banting, the inventor of insulin, lived and worked. The Royal Canadian Regiment Military Museum is the oldest — and one of the best — military museums in the country. And at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology, you can watch the excavation and reconstruction of a prehistoric Iroquoian village. Culture thrives in London, centred around the Grand Theatre, which has operated since 1901 with a galaxy of stars, including W.C. Fields, Sarah Bernhardt and Sir John Gielgud, strutting the stage. London is also a university city with all the ebullience of youth, sports, pubs and lively nightclubs. Covent Garden Market and the annual Western Fair are reminders that London, surrounded by rich farmland, is the agricultural hub of southwestern Ontario. But the reason I love London is its greenery, the trees that eventually become the canvases for the carvers. The cityscape is softened by two meandering branches of the Thames River that bring a continuous swath of green space, parks and playgrounds into the heart of the city. You can hike or bike from one end of the city to the other on relatively flat ground and never have to battle with traffic. For these reasons, London is becoming a

popular biking destination. The tree-carving project demonstrates London’s love of trees and is enhancing its reputation as the “Forest City”. Two master woodcarvers (Wenzoski and Neil Cox) were hired to create sculptures that, instead of being confined to an art gallery, are out on public streets. The Tree Trunk Tour has been developed by a partnership of Tourism London, the City of London, STIHL Canada and Woodfield Community Association. At one street corner, I gazed in admiration at a majestic eagle; at another, a giant hand held a globe high in the air. Elsewhere, a castle turret soared into the sky. Fifteen carvings have been created and more will be added in the future. Cox explained that about 95 per cent of the carving is done with chainsaws ranging in size from large blocking saws to delicate carving saws. Finishing work is done with chisels and power rotary tools. The artwork is usually painted or stained and then finished with automotive polyurethane enamel to preserve the wood. “Designing the sculpture is the hardest part,” Cox explained. “It needs to fit the history and style of its location, and we need to get the approval of city officials as well as the people who will live next to it.” Each carving is a magical adventure, said Wenzoski. He described how passersby often stop to chat and admire his carving. Once, a blind lady asked to “see” the sculpture he was working on. She ran her hands over the carving, recognized the parts and was excited by its beauty. “London is full of great, friendly people,” said Wenzoski, “and encounters like that are priceless.”

We sit down at the table as Kelley a family and take turns SCARSBROOK with ideas or suggest options we can do — biking, walks, playground or maybe a movie. The point of this exercise is to make the children feel like they are really a part of the household decision-making. After everyone has suggested an idea, we go through each idea and vote on it. It’s simple and effective. There is never any yelling or upset feelings after we vote because we have all done it together. If there is a tie, we let the children talk about which one they think would work best for that particular day. And we opt to do the other activity another day (or combine them, if it works). I also have “mini” meetings each day with my son and daughter on things such as breakfast, lunch and snack time. The small decisions we make as parents each day can be vital to our children, as far as building blocks to their future and how they address decision-making. I believe my children both consider the fact that we allow them to assist in decision-making to be a sign that we respect their thoughts and their ideas. And we do. Sometimes my son, who is seven, and my daughter, who is four, will come up with the most surprising and unique activity ideas. Of course, sometimes it can involve a

trip to Disneyland that day, but other times they come up with ideas like a hike through Semiahmoo Trail as Indiana Jones or picking up leaves to press in an album. Our goal with having our children involved with some of the decision-making is that they will feel comfortable enough to bring future problems and concerns to the table when they arise, as well. That way, things can get discussed rationally and without judgment, which I’m praying they will utilize both now and when they become teenagers. As someone who was raised this way, I always felt comfortable talking things through with my parents. There were times that because they were open to discuss things with me, it kept me on track in my life. There was never a question or problem I couldn’t talk about with my parents, because they never made me feel embarrassed or made me feel that what I thought didn’t matter. They never just told me “no” or “because I said so.” I always felt like they listened and cared. I realize that my children will make their own mistakes — we’ve all had our share of regret. But, as parents, we have a responsibility to our children to help prepare them for those future decisions they will be making for themselves as young adults. So, after today’s team meeting, we decided to take a drive tonight to see the Christmas lights with hot chocolate and marshmallows in thermases (my daughter’s idea) along with donations for the food bank (my son’s idea). Best team meeting yet. Contact columnist Kelley Scarsbrook via www.thestayathomemother.com.

Christmas

Pressed for time? Try some of these gift ideas The Christmas countdown has begun, and the days are flying off the calendar like they do every year. Those who haven’t yet started shopping may feel pressed for time and worry that they will not be able to find gifts for everyone on their lists — at least, gifts that don’t look like they were afterthoughts. But good gifts can be found at the eleventh hour: ADULTS ❚ Visit the local liquor store for a bottle of wine in the price range desired. Wrap it in a wine bag or leave it as is with a nice bow. ❚ Pick up passes to a local attraction, such as an amusement park or a museum. Put to-

gether tickets for a play paired with a soundtrack of the production. ❚ Food is often appreciated. A box of fine chocolates or one of those edible fruit arrangements will be a tasteful, and tasty, gift. ❚ Fill a large bowl with a scooper, sprinkles, cherries, and other toppings for making ice cream sundaes. ❚ Pick a gift that embraces the holiday

spirit. Holiday music, ornaments or table decorations can be used this year or next. CHILDREN ❚ Pop into a toy store or a department store and pick up a cuddly stuffed animal. ❚ Buy an art set for older children, full of paints and markers. If a complete set can’t be found, make an art package with a bunch of supplies packed into a gift bag. ❚ Choose an educational gift that is still fun, like alphabet flash cards or puzzles. A subscription to a children’s magazine would also work, seeing as children love getting mail. ❚ Few kids will turn down a DVD of their

favorite television characters. The DVDs should feature an age-appropriateness rating to make choosing one even easier. TEENAGERS ❚ Teenagers can be finicky, so money is a one-size-fits-all option. ❚ Teenage girls may appreciate a gift basket of delicious scented lotions. ❚ Passes for movies can make date night less expensive. ❚ Consider a gift card or e-gift coupon for digital music downloads. ❚ Give a subscription to a teen magazine so that everyone can keep abreast of their favorite celebrities.

Foil, newspaper, comics, magazines, and even brown mailing paper are all good ideas — or skip the wrapping paper altogether. ❚ It’s OK to make gifts. Christmas is a holiday full of joy and celebration. It can also be a time of consumption and stress on the environment. However, holiday shoppers and celebrants can easily reduce their carbon footprint this holiday season. During a season in which more is often more, it can be a challenge to cut back in an effort to protect the planet. But scaling back gifts, food consumption and travel can be effective ways to go green this holiday season. ❚ Buy fewer gifts. Christmas gifts show others how much they are cared about. Some gifts are given out of necessity. Others are more of a sentimental statement. It’s easy to express how much you care without overdoing it. Set a limit on the number of gifts each recipient gets. ❚ Organize a “Secret Santa.” An easy way to cut down on gifts purchased is to organize a Secret Santa or holiday grab bag. Live Christmas trees are a renewable resource, unlike plastic trees made from petroleum. After the season, real trees can be turned into mulch.

❚ Use LED holiday lights. Limit the drain on energy by selecting lights that have the least impact. LEDs use less power and last longer than traditional bulbs. When possible, consider the use of solar-powered holiday lights. Also, don’t leave the lights on when nobody is home or everyone has gone to sleep. ❚ Decorate a live tree. Christmas tree farms are in the business of regularly planting and harvesting evergreen trees. That makes live trees a renewable resource instead of plastic trees made from petroleum. After the season, Christmas trees can be turned into mulch. ❚ Send recycled cards or ecards. Don’t send so many cards and choose materials around the house that can be turned into Christmas cards for those that you do send. Also, recycle last year’s cards into tags for gifts. ❚ Recycle leftover materials. Chances are large gifts will have enough wrapping paper remaining to wrap other gifts next year. Avoid metallic paper, which is more difficult to recycle. Be sure to break down all cardboard and paper so that it can be put out for recycling.

Walkie-Talkies win top toy award for 2011 Tobi Cohen

Postmedia News

NOTHING CAN STOP ME

Help us prevent children from falling behind.

That’s a big Christmas season 104, good buddy, for Walkie-Talkies. The toy for talkative tykes was given top honours by the Canadian Toy Testing Council, which on Nov. 19 released its 2011 list of can’tmiss gifts for parents looking for safe and reliable play things to put under the tree. The top award for 2011 — given to the best battery-operated toy — w a s V Te c h’s Te x t a n d C h a t Walkie-Talkies, a new twist on an old favourite, according to company president Gordon Chow. “We added a lot of features to the toy. We’re now able to send little text messages between the two walkie-talkies. Games (were) built into the walkie-talkies as well,” he said, noting the toy has a standard range of one kilometre and retails for about $44.99. “It just added those extra play values for the kids to have really a lot more fun than just talking to each other.” Of the 525 toys test-driven by about 1,000 Canadian children this year, 35 received top honours during the Hot Toys for 2011 awards event at Ottawa’s Brookstreet Hotel. Prizes were also awarded to 10 “Great Books” for children ages 0-12. “Best Bets” for 2011 include the Fisher Price Musical Croc Block Wagon, which allows babies to feed colourful blocks into the mouth of

VTech’s award-winning Text and Chat Walkie-Talkies, for talkative tykes.

a crocodile-shaped push toy, and the Playmobil Great Dragon Castle. A highlight of the event was the “Children’s Choice” awards, in which kid testers themselves were invited on stage to talk about their favourites. The Busy Life Perplexus 3-D puzzle and the seemingly timeless Star Wars Spinning Electronic Lightsaber by Hasbro were some of the biggest crowd pleasers among the dozens of babies, toddlers, preschoolers and preteens let loose inside the ballroom to play with the award-winning toys, games and books. “We tested the Star Wars spin-

ning Lightsaber, which was one of my favourites. It was really, really fun,” 12-year-old tester Rachel Tustin said. “It glows different colours when you press a button and it makes battle noises when you press a button also, and it spins around and it’s really fun.” Toy testing council chairwoman Liliane Benoit said while there don’t appear to be any new trends this year, toys that can grow with the child are par ticularly popular among parents, who appreciate not having to go out and buy new ones every time their wee ones’ tastes evolve.

Toys such as board games that appeal to the whole family also remain popular, she said. “We encourage the family interaction and you’ll see that with many of the games that we picked,” she said. “You’ll also see interactive play. For example, with the swords, they’re getting active play.” The toy council has been scrutinizing toys for safety, durability, design, function, battery consumption and play value since 1952. Volunteer toy testing families get to take the play things home for eight to 12 weeks, where they’re put through the rigours of everyday wear and tear. The council’s Toy Report 2011, which was also released on Nov. 19, offers complete ratings for every item tested by age group. Toy-testing parent Kim Cooper said it’s a good place for overwhelmed parents to start before hitting the mall in search of that perfect gift. “The more you know about a toy, the better I think you’ll feel about buying that toy and knowing that it will have a lot of play value for your children,” she said. “You are laying out, in some cases, a fair amount of money, so you want to make sure it’s a toy that’s going to last and that your kids are going to enjoy.” For more information about award winners and for a complete list of toy ratings in the 2011 Toy Report, visit www.toy-testing.org.

Wines for tough-to-buy-for people on your list that’s all about balance. Easy-drinking pinot noir is medium-bodied yet packed with flavour. Surprise him with a large-format bottle, like a magnum. Big thinking means big progress for you. This wine also works for psychologists, marriage counsellors and bartenders. THE BOSS: Pick too pricey a wine and your boss will think your last raise was too much; go cheap, and she’ll think you lack judgement. Focus on a label with a lot of white space since that makes the bottle look more expensive. A castle in the distance also works, but avoid fluffy animals. PERSONAL TRAINER: Think a muscular, robust red would work? Hold that position. Instead, try riesling: this light white wine pairs well with a health-nut diet of salad and seafood, plus it’s low in alcohol. You can also give it to Pilates instructors, yoga masters and Tai Chi coaches. FINANCIAL PLANNER: You and he (or she) both know it’s going to take decades before your portfolio recovers after the crash of 2008. With that long-term view, vintage port makes the perfect gift. This fortified wine from northern Portugal, with its long aging potential, will be around for both of you into your retirements.

Wine expert Natalie MacLean: “When you give wine, doubles are fine, there are no wrong sizes and you can always find something good in stock. Vintage gifts will get anyone into the holiday spirits.”

Wine is one of the few presents that makes both the giver and the receiver look good. So says Natalie MacLean, the so-called “esommelier” behind www.nataliemaclean. com, one of Canada’s largest wine web sites. “You look like you spent a bundle on the gift (even if you didn’t) and the recipients are happy that you think they know something about wine (even if they don’t).” This holiday season, anyone can tap into MacLean’s expertise via her free web site and mobile apps for iPhone, BlackBerry, Droid and other smartphones. They help consumers with a whole new type of pairing: wine with the people on your Christmas shopping list. The app and site also pair wines to thousands of dishes, including holiday favourites, such as turkey, goose, duck, and even partridge in a pear tree. “When you give wine, doubles are fine, there are no wrong sizes and you can always find something good in stock,” adds MacLean, who is based in Ottawa. “Vintage gifts will get anyone into the holiday spirits.” MacLean’s top 10 gift wines for your… HAIRDRESSER: For the person who combines humour and optimism every time she styles your mop. “Where White Rock Gets Italian”

TRAVEL AGENT: She’s been everywhere and seen everything, so go local with your choice of wine. Even better, if you live close to the winery, get the bottle signed by the winemaker. TEACHER: If you can’t find a suitably obscure wine with a Latin name, there’s always cream sherry. It’s the tipple of Oxford dons, not to mention the centerpiece of Edgar Allan Poe’s classic short story The Case of the Amontillado. MAIL DELIVERER: Go for a winery that’s consistent year after year in producing a wine that can be enjoyed in snow, rain, sleet or hail. Try an Australian shiraz or Argentine malbec. MECHANIC: Yes, there’s a wine called Red Truck, but try to be more imaginative. Why not give a wine made by Mario Andretti in California or Ferrari in Italy? ONLINE DATE: So you’re on your second or third rendezvous with the person you met on eHarmony or Dating.com. If you’re not sure yet whether marriage is a possibility, try something middle-of-the-road, like merlot. Yes, it’s the soft jazz of wine, but until you

know, play it safe. And after all that shopping, don’t forget yourself: even Santa’s little helpers need more than milk and cookies. Try something with high-alcohol like Italian Amarone or Rhone syrah: these big reds easily drown out tone-deaf carolling and pair beautifully with tired feet. Eagles battle foes, virus on road trip

The Surrey Eagles enjoyed a wellMichael BOOTH deserved day off Monday after turning Sports Editor a road trip from hell into a modified victory tour through the B.C. Hockey League’s Interior Conference. Building on a 4-3 overtime win over Coquitlam Wednesday, the Eagles managed to extend their winning ways with a comeback 4-3 win in Trail Friday, a 4-2 win over Salmon Arm Saturday and a gutsy, shorthanded 2-1 overtime loss to defending national champion Vernon Sunday. “We didn’t get all the wins but we knew we had to be pretty sharp against those teams,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “Every game was tight and we’re learning to win games like that, whether it’s coming back from being down a couple goals or protecting a one-goal lead. What was really impressive was the number of guys who stepped up in different areas just because of penalties or because we were missing so many guys.” The Eagles set out on the trip with modest injury issues only to have the team’s resilience tested to the max when an illness similar to the Norwalk Virus ravaged the roster. By Sunday afternoon, Surrey could only dress 13 skaters for their game in Vernon but the Eagles battled hard before falling in the second overtime period. Vernon launched 50 shots at Surrey netminder Karel St-Laurent but could only muster one goal in regulation before finally getting the win on their 10th shot of overtime. Dale Hunt scored the lone Surrey goal on a second period power play. “We were lucky that was our last game of the trip because so many guys were sick,” Erhart said. “We played pretty defensively and kept a lot of their shots to the outside. They had their fair share of quality chances, especially later in the game when everybody was tired, but it was a good result for us.” Saturday night in Salmon Arm was backup goalie Andrew Hunt’s turn to shine. Making his first start in more than a month, Hunt earned first star honours by turning aside 35 of 37 Salmon Arm shots to backstop Surrey to the win. Richard Vanderhoek, back in the Surrey lineup after a brief stint with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, netted a pair of goals for the Eagles while Brad McGowan and Scott Holm chipped in with unassisted markers in the second period. Surrey opened the road trip Friday in Trail where they were overwhelmed by the host Smoke Eaters early in the contest. Trail led 3-0 before the game was 10 minutes old but Surrey slowly battled back. Dale Hunt scored late in the opening frame and Vanderhoek bagged a pair in the middle period to knot the game at 3-3. Dale Hunt then completed the comeback with the lone goal of the third period. “Our first 10 minutes of that game reminded me of us in the preseason — we weren’t very good at all,” Erhart said. “Our second and third periods were really good though; we hemmed them in and in the third period they didn’t get a shot until there was five minutes left.” Surrey returns to action Wednesday when they host Coquitlam at South Surrey Arena (7 p.m. start). Leagueleading Powell River pays a visit Friday evening.

Volunteers honoured

Two long-time volMichael BOOTH unteers have been Sports Editor rewarded for their years of service to the Surrey and North Delta sporting scene. Ken Smith, 90, was honoured as the 2010 recipient of the Ed Henick Meritorious Service Award at the Canadian Junior Football League’s annual champions dinner in Saskatoon last month. Closer to home, North Delta resident Glenn Zwick (58) was inducted into the Canadian Recreational Hockey Association Hall of Fame at a dinner in Surrey Nov. 27. Along with his late wife Mary, Smith has been active in Surrey’s football community for 40 years working with the North Surrey community program and

the Surrey Rams junior team. Smith said his involvement began when he enrolled his sons in minor football in 1970. “Don Ross said he would do the coaching and teach the kids the game but he needed some help,” Smith recalled. “So the next thing I knew Mary was in the trailer selling hot dogs and pop and I was outside lining the field. That was how it started.” Smith and his son Craig flew to Saskatoon for the awards dinner - or at least they tried to. Ice fog at the airport forced the Smith’s plane to return to Calgary where they heard about the evening second hand through friends in

continued from page 29 attendance. “I didn’t even make it to the ceremony,” Smith said. “We had to fly back to Calgary and I missed the dinner and everything. I was told I got a standing ovation so it’s too bad I missed it.” He then added, “Mary and I put in a lot of years and a lot of time and effort. She was very active in football too and the part that bothers me is she isn’t here to enjoy it.” On Saturday night it was Zwick’s turn to take the spotlight when he was honoured for almost 30 years of work in men’s, minor and high school hockey. Zwick revived high school hockey in Surrey, watching the league grow from five teams in 1995 to today where there are 16 schools competing annually for the Zwick Cup. “It’s not a memorial trophy so I’m OK with that,” Zwick said with a laugh. Zwick is also a long-time organizer of the South Fraser Hockey League and one of the founding members of the Red Army Hockey Club. The team started 23 years ago to attend a tournament in the U.S. during the height of cold war paranoia. The players called themselves

How did that happen?” Zwick was coaxed out for a dinner invitation at the Kal-Mar Restaurant Saturday, Nov. 27, where he was surprised with his award in front of a large group of friends and supporters. “I was kind of embarrassed by all the attention,” Zwick said. “I never did it for attention. This is all very humbling.” Zwick then added with a mischievous grin: “It was great to see everybody there and I was surprised they all look so old. SUDOKU Fun By The Numbers

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

While buckling seatbelts is second nature when getting into a car – how many of us think to adjust the headrest? Reports show that headrests are one of the most overlooked safety features in motor vehicles today and many don’t realize the important role they play in preventing neck, brain and spinal cord related injuries. “Headrests are designed to work alongside the seatbelt so that when an accident occurs it prevents the head from twisting backwards, which subsequently results in whiplash,” explains Mauro Convertini, an insurance and claims expert at Aviva Canada. “Drivers can sustain an injury from an incorrectly adjusted headrest even at speeds as low as 15 kilometres per hour – the same speed as the average bicycle.” According to an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, only 14 per cent of drivers on the road have their headrest in the proper position. And whiplash being the most common soft tissue injury incurred during auto collisions underlines the importance for all passengers to ensure their headrest is adjusted properly. Aviva’s Convertini recommends that Canadian drivers follow three simple steps in order to prevent injuries associated with improper headrest position: 1. The top of the headrest should be in a straight line with the top of your head. 2. Position the centre of your headrest so that it is slightly above the top of the ear.
