It was this kind of night in Surrey. Nobody was hurt in this Newton house fire on Halloween night. SURREY – It was a Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter busy Halloween weekend for mayhem in North Delta and Surrey. A Surrey family was burned out of their home but nobody was injured after a fire all but destroyed a house in the 13200-block of 87B Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday. Fire investigators were still trying to determine the cause at press time. There are conflicting reports that it was started either by a jack-o-lantern that caught fire in the backyard and lit the house’s vinyl siding, or that flames spread from fake spider webs that caught on fire while kids were shooting off fireworks. Ron Cross, Surrey’s chief fire prevention officer, said city firefighters also put out a few hedge fires on Halloween night and earlier on Sunday doused a house fire involving a mari-
juana grow operation in the 18600-block of 88th Avenue. As for Halloween night itself, Surrey RCMP Const. Peter Neily said the RCMP responded to 375 calls in 12 hours but there were “no significant incidents” and a “whole lot of unfounded complaints” from people mistaking fireworks explosions for gunfire. But the rest of the weekend was another story. Just after midnight Saturday, a 22-year-old Surrey man was stabbed during a boozefueled costume party near 130th Street and 107A Avenue. Neily described it as a “chaotic scene” with “numerous intoxicated” people. The victim is expected to recover but isn’t cooperating with police, Neily added. Shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday a Surrey man was killed during a single-car crash in

which police believe alcohol and speed were contributing factors. The victim, whose name has not been released, was a passenger in a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro that hit a telephone pole in the 17600-block of 64th Avenue. He died at the scene. The driver sustained serious injuries, and another passenger was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Friday night, shortly before midnight, a young man was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, believed to be caused by a rock or a crowbar, after a brawl broke out among a group of youths at Hillcrest Park in Cloverdale. Eight youths were arrested but charges had not been laid by press time.

❚DELTA/On a warpath, lotto cops ask busted pub manager to rat out other un-licensed fundraisers
PUB-BUSTERS STRIKE AGAIN Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter
DELTA – B.C.’s lotto cops have struck again, fining another North Delta pub manager for running an unlicensed football pool. Last week, the Now ran the story of Kennedy’s Pub manager Sue Rees, who was fined $575 for holding unlicensed 50/50 draws to raise money for victims of a nearby apartment fire back in July. Now it’s Mike Mahoney’s turn. Mahoney manages the Delta Lion Pub at 112th Street and 84th Avenue where patrons used to be able to play a two-buck-a-square Monday Night Football pool. All the money – a cool $200 – went to the winning players; the pub took nothing. Cue the lotto cops. “Two guys flashed their badges at me and fined me $575 for the board because it wasn’t licensed. They even read me my rights; told me I could call a lawyer,” Mahoney laughed. “We don’t get any money out of that. We run over 100 fundraisers a year here.” As if the fine wasn’t bad enough, Mahoney said the lotto cops added insult to injury when they invited him to rat out another pub. “These two guys had the gall to sit there and tell me the only reason they were in my place was because somebody complained. Then they asked me if I wanted to name any other places doing the same kind of thing,” the indignant pub
What did Mike Mahoney, manager of Delta Lion Pub say to B.C.’s lotto cops? “I told them to get the hell out.” manager said. “I told them to get the hell out.” Mahoney said he has often invited local youth sports organizations to hold 50/50 draws in his pub to help them raise money. “They hold bottle drives and work all day for a few bucks. I’ve
said to them over the years, if you want to come in and have a 50/50, you can raise $150 for an hour’s work. It’s just a way to help people.” All that could be over now that gaming authorities are coming after pubs, Mahoney said. A second
offence could cost him $10,000 or a year in jail, and complex licensing regulations on a government website appear to disqualify pubs from eligibility. Mahoney’s customers aren’t impressed with the government’s actions. Ron McKenzie is a regular.

“My son played hockey for years and they used to hold 50/50s to raise money for road trips and things like that. Now the government is sending people in undercover? What a way to make a living.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

MP targets nighttime noise
Street racer hurt in crash

NEW WESTMINSTER – MP Peter Julian wants the federal government to help Quayside residents get a good night’s sleep. The Burnaby-New Westminster MP has tabled a private member’s bill in the House of Commons that would prohibit railway companies from engaging in noisy rail yard activities in residential areas between the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. “It definitely came out of my consultation with the community. We have had a couple of townhall meetings,” he said. “There have been very, very clear indications from folks in the Quayside area that action is needed.” Julian noted that high-noise activities in the rail yard include the idling, sorting, coupling, decoupling and shunting of trains, which creates an incredible amount of noise and disruption. – Royal City Record
LANGLEY – Two teenagers face criminal charges after a street race and crash that left one of them in the hospital with serious internal injuries. The crash took place in the 26200-block of 88th Avenue in Glen Valley Wednesday afternoon. A 1993 Acura Integra driven by an 18-year-old man was racing a 1990 Honda Accord, which had a 17year-old young woman from Chilliwack at the wheel. The cars were headed east, with the Acura driving in the oncoming lane. The cars had been weaving in and out of traffic on what is usually a quiet, rural road. The Acura left the road and slammed into a tree on the north side of the street, Marks said. Township firefighters had to extract the victim from his car, and he was taken to hospital by Air Ambulance. Police say they will likely recommend charges against both drivers. – Langley Advance
RICHMOND – Snow geese should beware. The City of Richmond has teamed up with YVR to make the lives of our 100,000-strong seasonal visitors very difficult indeed. A new wildlife strategy, to combat the park-chomping and “bomb”-laying geese’s annual arrival on the west dyke, has been created by the city to tie in with the airport’s robust tactics. As a result of several meetings with the airport – which has to scare away the massive flocks of geese to keep them from getting sucked in an airplane’s engine – both parties will co-ordinate their snow geese “management” efforts and will use dog hazing, bright lights, lazers and air pistols to “manage” the geese. The city also decided earlier this year to pay farmers to grow a winter covering of crops in certain fields to attract the geese away from lush city parks and sports fields, which can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair when the geese move on. – Richmond News

Dad files human rights complaint over bullying in Surrey school

SURREY – A Surrey Ted COLLEY man has filed a human Staff Reporter rights complaint against the Surrey school board on behalf of his disabled daughter. The man, identified only as JT in B.C. Human Rights Tribunal documents, claimed his daughter, who has cerebral palsy and a mental disability, has been subjected to ongoing bullying by three classmates at Erma Stephenson Elementary school. He also alleges school authorities failed to take appropriate steps to stop the bullying and that the district failed to provide the girl with a “safe and respectful school experience.” The complaint claimed the daughter was subjected to ongoing bullying and insults about her physical and mental condition beginning in 2008. According to tribunal documents available online, JT claimed three girls at the school called his daughter names such as “dumb, retarded, messy, weird legs, stupid.” He also claimed one of the bullies
struck his daughter on the head with a music stand in September 2008. The complainant alleges these events were brought to the principal’s notice by the daughter’s parents and teachers, but no “meaningful discipline” was applied to the alleged transgressors. District spokesman Doug Strachan said district lawyers are dealing with the complaint and added all bullying allegations are taken seriously and dealt with promptly. The school district asked the tribunal to dismiss the complaint on the grounds that it was filed after the six-month time limit had passed and that there was no continuing contravention of the Human Rights Code. Tribunal member Marlene Tyshynski was not persuaded by the district’s argument and accepted the complaint. Once the district responds to the complaint itself, the tribunal will offer the parties mediation. If mediation is rejected, a hearing date will be set. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

❚ NEWS ❚SURREY/Grant money gives children lesson in appreciating nature
Students dig in during ‘wonderful outdoor classroom’ session SURREY – They Marisa BABIC started the job all Staff Reporter thumbs. By the time they finished planting their trees, they were green thumbs. A group of Grade 4 students from Lena Shaw Elementary school recently spent a sunny afternoon in Green Timbers Urban Forest planting trees and shrubs. The project, one in a series of ecology and education projects in the park, is being made possible through a corporate grant. Last month, the City of Surrey was selected by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and Tree Canada to receive a $15,000 grant from the TD Green Streets program for its 2010/2011 urban reforestation program. The funding will support the city’s
Green Timbers Friends of the Forest stewardship program in partnership with Lena Shaw Elementary. Colleen Gillespie, the city’s environmental programs co-ordinator, said the city is partnering with Lena Shaw because of the school’s dedication to environmental programs. A large inner-city school located within walking distance to Green Timbers Urban Forest, Lena Shaw Elementary is one of the few schools in Canada designated as an “Earth School,” in recognition of the large number of environmental programs staff and students have undertaken over the years. “It’s a combination of their location and keen teachers,” Gillespie said. The students walked to the park from their school and then assembled on a
gentle slope, opposite the lake. After receiving planting instructions from a city gardener, the kids got to work. The patch of ground where they were planting had been worked but soil stubbornly resists a shovel pushed by nineyear-olds. With a bit of muscle though, planting holes started to appear.
atmosphere, Justin said he learned that “trees have big roots” that require deep holes. Teacher Waheeda Bryon said the project is teaching her students to appreciate beauty and nature. “They’ll learn how difficult it is to plant trees and how important it is to have green space,” Bryon said. Gillespie said some of the grant funding will be set aside for legacy items such as field guides, plant books and sets of binoculars for the school’s future students. She said the ultimate goal of the program is to encourage more teachers to use the park. “We want to do that as much as possible because it’s a great place to learn,” she said. “What a wonderful outdoor classroom.”
See PHOTO, thenownewspaper.com Justin Larsen, 9, said digging a hole for a tree was hard work, especially in 23degree Celsius temperature. While they were digging, Justin and his planting partner Aaron Richardson hit a rock, too. “It’s a bit hard, it’s a hot day,” Justin said wearily, as he paused to wipe the sweat off his brow. To say Halloween weekend was crazy is understatement continued from page 1 In North Delta, a teenager armed with a metal baseball bat robbed a 15-year-old boy of his backpack. This happened shortly before 11 o’clock Halloween night, in the 11600-block of Lyon Road in Sunshine Hills. Delta police found the 16-year-old robbery suspect at his home and charged him. Acting Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said the victim was smart to surrender his stuff. “Under these circumstances the only thing worth fighting for is your personal safety, or that of another,” he said. Police mopped up a fight in the parking lot of the One 20 Pub in the 8000-block of Scott Road at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday and one man was taken to Surrey Memorial Hospital with an eye injury and cut on his forehead. It’s still under investigation, Eisenzimmer said. “The people on the scene were very unco-operative with the police and unwilling to provide information or statements,” he
said. “All parties had been drinking.” Also on Saturday a woman who is nine months pregnant was injured when her car was hit by a car driven by an impaired driving suspect. Eizenzimmer said the suspect woman’s car had crossed the centre line, at 85th Avenue and 116th Street. Police took her to Surrey Memorial, where she refused to provide a blood sample. She was charged for the refusal and the investigation continues. On Halloween, like some bad movie cliché, thieves set a car on blocks and stripped it of its chrome rims and new Nexon tires in front of an auto shop in the 11900-block of 94th Avenue. About $2,000 damage was done to the vehicle. The stolen rims and tires were worth about $1,200. “It was a very busy weekend with all units responding to numerous firecracker and noisy parties calls,” Eisenzimmer said. Delta police dealt with 130 files on Halloween. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – A former Tom ZYTARUK RCMP homicide invesStaff Reporter tigator who submitted a bogus claim for $700 in overtime while working on the Surrey Six murder case has dodged a criminal record. Steve Perreault, who had been with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and worked with the RCMP for four years, pleaded guilty to attempting to defraud the RCMP “of monies under $5,000.” He made the false overtime claim in August 2009 while investigating the October 2007 multiple slayings, where six men were shot dead in a penthouse suite in Whalley’s Balmoral Tower. Perreault’s crime came to light when he showed the bogus claim to a co-worker who knew he hadn’t work on that particular day. The co-worker reported the matter to his superiors, an investigation was launched and Perreault confessed. He wasn’t suspended from his job but was instead transferred to general duty in Chilliwack. “Mr. Perreault’s future with the RCMP is uncertain,” Judge Brian Bastin noted in his reasons for sentencing. “He will likely face a disciplinary hearing after the completion of the subject proceedings.” Bastin noted that Perreault, 39, has been “shunned” by colleagues since the criminal charge was laid against him. The judge noted that the Mountie said he did it because money was tight. “At the time of
the offence, Mr. Perreault was being asked by his fiancé to spend more time with her when, at the same time, financial pressures were requiring him to work many hours of overtime.” Since then, his fiancé has left him and he filed for bankruptcy. The judge noted Perreault underwent counseling “in an effort to understand why” he filed the bogus overtime claim. The Crown had sought a two-month jail term followed by a year’s probation, arguing that as a police officer, Perreault should be held to a higher standard than regular people. Bastin decided against imposing a jail term and gave Perreault a conditional discharge. Given the “unsophisticated and senseless nature” of the offence, he concluded it is “not contrary to the public interest” to order a discharge. He also ordered that Perreault complete one year’s probation. Further, he was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and was fined $500. Eileen Mohan, whose son Chris was one of the six murder victims, said she was “very disappointed” by what Perreault did. “It was very self-serving,” she said. But she added that she’d glad that this situation was “dealt with accordingly” prior to the murder trial as she wants to ensure that “this file is spotless” before the Surrey Six case goes into trial mode. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

❚POLITICS
After months of near-paralysis in the B.C. Liberal government, the energy level was kicked up a serious notch last week Keith BALDREY — but all that activity appears not to have helped Premier Gordon Campbell’s fortunes one little bit. In fact, given the major moves by the government and the almost complete lack of positive response from the public, this past week may provide the proof that there is no recovery possible for the premier. Let’s recap, shall we? Monday, Oct. 25: The premier announces a “realignment” of his cabinet. He demotes no one from the top council, promotes one backbencher and gives his chief of staff a cushy, well-paid job in the civil service (which, considering his years of harrumphing about the NDP government’s politicization of the civil service appears stunningly hypocritical at best). The realignment includes sweeping changes to the so-called “dirt ministries” — i.e. energy, forestry, mining and agriculture. These changes don’t draw a lot of attention at first, but that will all change in 24 hours. Tuesday, Oct. 26: A front-page line story in The Vancouver Sun blares a headline about Energy Minister Bill Bennett “blasting” the premier’s cabinet shuffle and heaping criticism on his boss. Bennett took it upon himself to phone Sun reporter Jonathan Fowlie (telling Fowlie he was about to hear some “juicy stuff;” a promise he kept) to complain that all these changes — including big ones to his own ministry — were carried out without any consultation with any “elected people.”

Campbell’s chance of recovery next to nil
Campbell’s weak response — basically, “that’s just Bill being Bill” — was telling. Public dissent in the B.C. Liberal ranks has been almost non-existent since they came into power, but those days are clearly over. One can’t help but wonder whether, if Campbell were in a stronger position in terms of his own popularity and credibility, his response to the startling comments would have been more along the line of “You’re fired, Bill.” But Campbell really can’t afford to make enemies of anyone in his party right now. As a result, he has become a greatly weakened leader. Wednesday, Oct. 27: Social Development Minister Kevin Krueger goes on a Kamloops radio station and calls cabinet colleague Bennett “petulant and ridiculous.” He claims Bennett won’t be trusted by his caucus mates. We’ll see, Kevin. We’ll see. Meanwhile, the premier goes on Global TV at night and attracts a huge audience (the News Hour audience on Global simply stayed put to watch what the premier had to say). Unfortunately for the premier, a much smaller audience might have served him better. The speech fell completely flat. The defence and explanation of the HST seemed somewhat desper-
ate, and the announcement of a 15-per-cent income tax cut failed to grab hold of people expecting something more creative (such as an announcement of a future cut to the HST rate). Just how badly the speech played with voters will be illustrated the next day. Thursday, Oct. 28: An IpsosReid poll conducted for Global TV spells disaster for Campbell at every turn. Recent polls have been troubling for him in recent months, but this one is particularly bad because it comes as a direct response to his attempt at giving it his “best shot.” The poll reveals that even the income tax cut was greeted with near-ambivalence, as just 26 per cent said they “strongly supported” it. The response to questions about his explanation of the HST and of impressions of his leadership show he connected with less than 15 per cent of the audience. But, to again demonstrate the NDP’s unerring ability to make blunders even while its political opponent is in complete disarray, NDP MLA Leonard Krog goes on Shaw Cable’s Voice of B.C. program that evening and compares Kevin Krueger to Joseph Goebbels because of his unswerving loyalty to the premier. Krueger, he says, would be the
“last one out of the bunker.” The tasteless and offensive comment does not go unnoticed by the B.C. Liberals. Friday, Oct. 29: Krueger demands an apology from Krog, who duly offers one to him, as well as to Campbell and the Canadian Jewish Congress. Krog has learned what can happen when you violate a cardinal rule in politics: never, ever compare anyone or anything to the Nazis. And so the week that was came to an end. But what are not ending are the whispers within the heart of the B.C. Liberal government that some big changes are needed. And the whispers are becoming louder. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

Province’s posers are proof that bureaucracy is running wild The Editor, Re: “Sending posers to pub to bust 50/50? Get real,” the Now, Oct. 29. Mr. Colley – excellent column. The gaming police sent posers to put a stop to a charitable 50/50 draw. There are real scammers out there and the time of the gaming folks would be better spent chasing real criminals – or maybe not because the real scammers seldom get caught as they are too hard to find and sometimes fight back. One letter writer indicated support for this action claiming that his minor hockey team applied for a 50/50 permit. If so the team management is dumber than the proverbial bag of hammers. Selling 50/50 at many minor sports events is a way of life and is usually sold by sisters and brothers of the participants. The next step will be charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Some laws are just stupid and deserve to be challenged. I don’t think that British Columbians support the current gaming rules as defined in the gaming act (2002). Maybe we need a referendum on something other than the HST. The province has sunk to a new low. What’s next, “undercover parents” on
Mackie Park has been butchered
every soccer field, baseball diamond and hockey rink? Think about the revenue opportunities! Talk about bureaucracy run wild.
The Editor, An open letter to Delta Mayor Lois Jackson: I am writing you with outright contempt for your baseless actions that are fast turning Mackie Park into a desolate wasteland. What kind of political posturing could be driving this insanity? Is there anyone left at City Hall with the guts to challenge your dictatorship that allows zero input from this park’s most affected stakeholders or its educated department heads? And please don’t insult anyone with references to some new policing “sightline” strategy that will eliminate fear and crime in our wooded areas. These “sightline” areas are commonly known to most as fields or parking lots. What kind of person would consider woods to be anything, if not “woody?” After only a few days of rain, the lack of any drainage considerations have become apparent, leaving nothing but soon impassable lakes of water, covering what resemble, abandoned logging roads.
Larry Miller, Delta
Flower shop deserves our support The Editor, Re: “Mistaken identity plagues flower shop,” the Now, Oct. 26. I do not know Kris Sanderson and I can only guess what turmoil she has gone through since this episode began. The mainstream media and the police need to do due diligence when reporting on things like this so as not to lead people to speculate who might be involved. I hope that her customers will start to patronize her business again. She doesn’t deserve this negative publicity. Even though I live in South Surrey, I intend to order from her shop in the future. I wish her well and hope her business flourishes.
Patricia Pogue, Surrey
Where is the engineering foresight? Where is the science that should prevent the butchering of many healthy species of trees? And what about all the inhabitants of a forest that have been preparing for winter? I feel Delta’s head of parks Ken Kuntz should be allowed to do his job and not be forced to take direction from those whose motives are purely political and not grounded in fact, reason or backed by science. I look forward to the next election, where I will campaign vigourousely to get leadership back in our City Hall.
Robert Muckle, Delta

Vandals cause closure of ‘isolated pathway’
Surrey celebrates Diwali this week
DELTA – Some North Delta residents will have a longer way to walk to the Nordel Shopping Plaza, thanks to the dregs of society. The crosswalk between 111A Street and 111B Street connecting the shopping mall with the neighbourhood southwest of the mall will be closed permanently, thanks to vandalism and other crimes.
Delta municipal council voted unanimously to remove the pathway, for safety reasons, at Monday’s council meeting. “The safety of the children and residents of our community is the number one priority,” Mayor Lois Jackson said. “An isolated pathway with a history of criminal activity is not something we want to continue
SURREY – Diwali celebrations are happening throughout Surrey this week. The important annual “festival of lights” is marked by those of Hindu and Sikh faiths. Close to 300 people will pay $50 each to attend the Diwali gala today (Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. start) at SFU Surrey’s Dale B. Regehr Grand Hall. The third annual celebration, held previously at Bollywood Banquet Hall in Newton, is a cultural and business-networking event that features a display of lights, traditional South Asian cuisine and dancing. Featured will be performances led by instructors of SFU’s first ever bhangra dance course (Popular Dance: Introduction to Modern and Traditional Bhangra), offered at the university’s Goldcorp School for the Contemporary Arts. Funds raised at the event go toward scholarships for SFU students to work, study and volunteer in cities and villages of India. For event info, contact Angie Lim, 778782-5313 or angie_lim@sfu.ca.

The result was a decline in vandalism and criminal activity. – Tom Zytaruk

Beware of telephone scam SURREY – If you get a phone call from someone who says they’re trying to raise funds on behalf of the Surrey Crime Prevention Society to create educational material on child pornography, tell the caller to take a hike. It’s a scam, the society says. “Surrey Crime Prevention Society is not in any way involved in this telephone campaign,” said Mary-Lou McCausland, executive director of SCPS. “We do not solicit funds through the telephone,” she said. “This person is using the Society’s good name to perpetrate a fraud.”

Barn collapses on man in South Surrey SURREY – A man was taken to hospital Friday afternoon after the roof of an old chicken barn collapsed on him near 16th Avenue and 194th Street in South Surrey. The victim, whose name has not been released, was conscious when Surrey firefighters found him after cutting back the wood he was trapped underneath. Battalion Chief Tom Morgan said the man was inside the barn when it collapsed and though paramedics treated him at the scene his condition is presently unknown.

SURREY – Police say a 12-year-old boy is safe in custody after he was allegedly abducted by his mother in Alberta and brought to Surrey. The Strathcona County RCMP in Alberta issued an Amber alert on Thursday afternoon after receiving information the mother and son were headed for Surrey. With the help of the Air 1 police helicopter, local Mounties located her car at a Surrey residence. Insp. Dave Attfield of the Surrey RCMP said police arrested a “suspect” who was being held pending a hearing into the matter. “This ongoing investigation is in its early stages and therefore detail is limited at this time,” he said. Meantime, Attfield said the ministry of children and family development is “assisting with the care and safety of the child until he can be reunited with his family.” Names are not being released.

In each city along the way, the company selects young local dancers to perform alongside the pros. In Surrey, two dozen students with Lavrova, plus a few dancers from other local dance studios, will perform Thursday (Nov. 4, 8 p.m.) at Bell Performing Arts Centre. “It’s a big stage, so some of the younger dancers — hopefully they don’t get lost up there,” Anna said with a laugh.

What Patients Say...
Looking out over the western plains below, our guide, Carmela, points out the ruins of a Roman legionary campsite. The Sicarii zealots, led by Commander Eleazar Ben Yair, could have held out indefinitely against their Roman besiegers; their gigantic cisterns, fed by an intricate system of channels, contained enough water to last for at least five years. Today, only little tufts of grass survive the scorching desert sun, but Masada once boasted grain fields, fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Smiling, Carmela adds: “Defenders pelted the Romans with tomatoes and flung water down on them to prove they had ample provisions and would never surrender!” And they never did. The Romans built a ramp (the remains of which are still visible) and ruptured the surrounding walls of the fortress. It was an empty victory. All they found were dead bodies and burned-out buildings. “The granary,” Carmela says, “was deliberately left intact.” It flaunted the fact that the men and women of Masada wouldn’t have starved, but chose death over humiliation in the hands of the Romans. The question remains: Was this a mass suicide? Unlikely, since Judiasim prohibits suicide.

A view of the vast northern storeroom complex of Masada’s ancient fortress.
According to the only account handed down to us by Flavius Josephus, a 1st Century historian, the Jews of Masada drew lots to kill all inhabitants and then each other in turn, the last man being the only one to commit suicide. These lottery-drawn names have now been unearthed at Masada, which lends credence to Josephus’ account. Masada stands as a symbolic testament to the indomitable spirit of Israel. Every soldier attends a special graduation ceremony here, which closes with the vow that “Masada shall not fall again!” That evening, in the dusk-softened air, our group returns to the foot of Masada, this time to experience a stupendous operatic performance by Israeli Opera Company. Appropriately enough, the presentation is Verdi’s Nabucco, a complex story of Jewish betrayal, passion and revenge. The backdrop couldn’t be more powerful; Masada, floodlit, is outlined against the night sky. Apart from spectacular light on stage and sound effects, the sheer spectacle of an estimated 5,000 people in an amphitheatre, open to the starlit desert sky, carries its own theatrical impact. Next June, Masada will form the backdrop to Verdi’s Aida. Like Nabbuco, I’ve no doubt that it will be an unforgettable performance.

The land of Margaret DEEFHOLTS Israel is ancient, Now contributor powerful. It is as stark as death and as cruel as bitterness. Under the harsh white sun, its hills and valleys have echoed to the scream of bullets, the whine of grenades, the cries of the wounded and dying. The land of Israel is also hauntingly beautiful: mountains brood against the sky, buzzards ride the thermals against a blazing sun and parchment-coloured cliffs — wind-scribbled like old Hebrew scrolls — line the highway. Nothing can be more emblematic of Israel’s tormented history than the ancient fort of Masada, the walls of which encompass a tale of epic heroism and tragedy. Built by Herod the Great between 37-31 BC, Masada is perched on a 400-metrehigh plateau on the eastern edge of the Judean desert. It was here in 72 AD that 960 Jewish zealots stood their ground with steely determination and, literally, suicidal courage against the Roman army legions, in a siege that lasted for three gruelling months. We arrive at the base of the mountain and board a cable car that whips us to the top in five minutes. Below us is the torturous Snake Path where some stalwarts toil slowly upwards. It is blisteringly hot and a young man, emerging off the path at the entrance to the fortress, wipes his dripping brow and says, feelingly, “That was sheer hell!” Masada sank into oblivion until the site was rediscovered in the late 1800s, but restoration didn’t take place until the early 1960s. Today, walking past stone walls and buildings such as the Byzantine church and large bathhouse, it isn’t hard to imagine the sound of prayers emanating from the oldest synagogue in Israel (it predates the Second Temple in Jerusalem) or the conversational chatter of workers stacking foodstuff in the warehouse granaries.

NOT
Memento: My Life and Stories, Chronicle Books, 195 pages, $23.95 Everyone has a story to tell and the longer a life, the more there is to share. The problem comes when there is no record of those stories and sadly that person is gone. Michael McQueen faced that reality when his father unexpectedly died at 51, but what made the loss easier was the discovery of his father’s journal. Those stories he’d recorded allowed McQueen to gain new insight into his dad. From that experience came the
job to barely nurture the flame inside him. Sam’s world is torn apart when he finds his street barricaded and firemen battling the blaze that has consumed his home. When Sam finds out his wife and daughter were kidnapped before the fire began, he is forced to do the kidnapper’s bidding to try to win their release. McKenzie throws some interesting twists in this thriller, which takes place over several days. He keeps the action moving forward with the pressure of increasingly dangerous tasks that bring the police onto Sam’s case, while he struggles to find out the identity of the voice on the phone. To save his family, Sam will learn things about himself, for better or worse. — Terry Peters, Postmedia News Service

Some people dream of winning the lottery or swimming with dolphins. One of mine has always been to dress like Gene Simmons of KISS, in makeup and full ’70s-era gear. Little doubt, this dream is due to my childhood fascination with the rock band. Well, scratch that item off the bucket list. On Halloween night, my fantasy was fulfilled in fine style when The Headlines hit the stage at Central City Brewpub. As bass player, it was only fitting that I dress like mean Gene, alongside Beau “Slash” Simpson, Terry “Kurt Cobain” Gage, Dal “Alice Cooper” Hothi and Mike “Hippie dude” Schmidt. For the Demon’s makeup, I turned to New Image College of Fine Arts, a Vancouver-based leader in makeup design instruction (www.newimage.ca). As luck would have it, some of the skilled students were in
The Now’s Tom Zillich at Central City Brewpub. Surrey working their magic on actors strolling the corridors of Potters’ House of Horror in recent weeks. Saturday afternoon, I was in the chair for an hour while Siobhainn “Shiv” Lewis, a Brit who flew here for the college’s two-year co-op program, expertly brushed and painted me into a rock star with her perfectionist hand.
With Gene-like costume purchased at The Party Bazaar in Vancouver, the getup was a huge hit at Central City. This I know, because over the course of the evening, a dozen strangers wanted their photo taken with me — a good indication that a Halloween costume is totally dreamy. ❚ For more photos, go to www.thenownewspaper.com.

Sleep lab key for patients who need their zzzz’s SURREY – Iain Boyle Amy REID was first introduced to Now Contributor sleep disorders when his father was diagnosed in one of the nation’s first sleep labs, 35 years ago in Ontario. His father’s breathing was stopping 80 times an hour while he was sleeping — more than once a minute, “which is very severe,” he said. As it turned out, his father had obstructive sleep apnea. The word apnea comes from the Greek word meaning “without breath,” so basically your breathing stops at night, he explained. “He was (waking up) and his oxygen level in his blood was dropping quite significantly. He was on a pathway toward some very serious cardiovascular diseases,” Boyle said.
He was prescribed a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine (CPAP). “It was basically nothing more than a vacuum cleaner with the motor reversed so it blew instead of sucked,” he explained. “His first CPAP mask looked like something a pilot would wear.” A CPAP is worn at night to help resolve the respiratory problems associated with sleep apnea. Today, CPAPs are much more advanced. Within two weeks, Boyle’s father wouldn’t sleep without it. “The dramatic turnaround in such a short period of time was just amazing,” he said of his father’s condition, both physically and mentally. His father became interested in boxing
Dr. Richard Feige is the clinic leader for the sleep program at Surrey Memorial Hospital.
again and was back to being a mechanic. “My dad went from someone who was basically non-functioning to getting my father back. “I have no doubt that that CPAP machine has helped keep him alive for 35 years. He’s lived long enough to see his grandchildren grow up.” Boyle said if you don’t treat sleep apnea, other health problems slowly start to get worse and worse. And he said there appears to be a genetic link. Now, decades later, Boyle has the same disorder and also uses a CPAP machine. And he works in the sleep lab at Surrey Memorial Hospital, diagnosing others who have sleep apnea and related disorders.
Iain Boyle, a technologist at Surrey Memorial Hospital’s sleep lab, monitors patients throughout the night.
There are a total of 86 sleep disorders identified by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Boyle said. The most common is insomnia, he said, but the most common disorder they see at the lab is sleep apnea. Basically, the sleep lab is just that — a lab where sleep is monitored. The one at Surrey Memorial Hospital has six beds, all enclosed in miniature rooms. The lab is open six days a week, meaning 36 patients are seen in a typical week. Patients come in and stay overnight. Electrodes are attached around the scalp, face, shoulder and legs. Two bands, one around the chest and another around the abdomen, monitor breathing patterns. Airflow sensors sit under the nose. Video cameras are also used. It takes about an hour to set up each patient. During the night, Boyle and other sleep technologists constantly monitor patients. They also look after any needs patients may have if they wake up. “The overnight technologists are most definitely the eyes and ears of the sleep physician to see what is going on with a patient,” Boyle said. Things studied and documented include airflow, nasal pressure, brainwaves, snoring, leg movement and even sleep stages. Boyle said there are many reasons why adequate sleep is crucial. For example, many fatalities caused by car crashes are due to daytime sleepiness as a result of untreated sleep disorders, he said. Also, as in the case of Boyle’s father, a happy, carefree person can become nonfunctional as a result of a sleep disorder because of irritation, or literally not being able to stay awake during the day. “One of the big sort of myths that seems to be out there in the general population is, ‘Oh, I sleep fine. I go to bed at night, my head hits the pillow and I’m out like a light,’” said Boyle. “That is immediately telling me that there is a possibility of a sleep disorder because you should take anywhere from five to 15 minutes to fall asleep. Anything else and that may be indicative that you are not sleeping properly at night.”

Welcome to the story of our great city. As B.C.’s fastest growing city and the comm unity with the fastest growing immigrant population in Canada, the face of Surrey has changed dramatically over the years. Our city’s story is filled with tales of strength, challenges, hard ships, successes, unprecedented growth, stron g family ties and dedication to a sense of community.
Dianne Watts Mayor of Surrey
This book is a phenomenal way to show case every part of our city’s diverse past, showing residents at work, at home and at play at different times of Surrey’s history. While there are written histories of our city, this book is sure to fill a gap – the photos you will see in the following pages truly speak for themselves and I believe they speak volumes to our rich and vibrant history. Surrey residents have always shown a dedication to their comm unity and this book is a perfect way to honour those who were – and are still – proud to call Surrey home. Indeed, the future lives in Surrey. But let us not forget the past, for it’s the hard work of those before us that has pave d the way for us as a city. Our story conti nues to be written and as your mayor, I, alon g with city council, look to the future with excitement and optimism for what lies ahead for Surrey. But sometimes a quick look behind us reminds us of where we came from and where we need to go. Thank you, for your interest in your comm unity’s history. And if you or your fami ly have contributed photos to this book, thank you for helping us tell Surrey’s story.

Crusaders run down rival Panthers top with his third TD of the game followed by a Luke Ehman touchdown reception to seal the win for the home team. “This is a big win for us and if you’re trying to get kids in Surrey interested in high school football, winning this game was big that way too,” said Holy Cross coach Ken Buchan. “This game was good for our confidence too because we haven’t won too many games in the last two years. We’ve been close in a lot of games this year so it’s nice to get a win.” Linebackers Ryan Magdanz and Jack Wallace both finished with nine tackles for Lord Tweedsmuir. The loss all but eliminates the Panthers from playoff contention. Holy Cross still has playoff aspirations but needs a win over Catholic rival St. Thomas More in their final game of the regular season. ❚ In other games last weekend, the fifth-ranked John Barsby Bulldogs returned two kicks for touchdowns and then hung on to squeak past the fifth-ranked Seaquam Seahawks 24-22 in a clash of class-AA powers. The Seahawks fell behind 24-8 after three quarters before staging a late rally that fell one unsuccessful two-point convert short of a tie. Anthony Speranza scored on a 25-yard TD reception from Tyler Green in the first quarter before the Seaquam quarterback called his own number twice for short touchdown runs in the fourth to bring the Seahawks back. Greg Finley added a pair of twopoint converts to complete

The Michael Holy Cross BOOTH Sports Editor Crusaders used home to their advantage in securing Surrey bragging rights with a 28-15 win over the cross-town rival Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers in senior boys class AAA football action Friday. Running back Tyler Buchan scampered for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Crusaders to the win. “We just couldn’t stop the run,” said Lord Tweedsmuir coach Kurt Thornton. “They’re very good at running the ball and Buchan has turned into a really nice running back. He had over 200 yards rushing and most of those were in the fourth quarter. In the first half we did pretty well against the run, but we didn’t do ourselves any favours in other areas of the game.” Buchan opened the scoring with a TD early in the second quarter but on the ensuing kickoff, the Panthers’ Michael Messenger returned the ball 82 yards to tie the game at 7-7. Shortly before halftime the Panthers botched a punt attempt and the Crusaders capitalized by using the ideal position to set up Buchan’s second TD of the game and a 14-7 halftime lead. The third quarter was all Lord Tweedsmuir as the visitors chewed up most of the clock with a long drive that ended with a two-yard scoring run by Braden Champion. Messenger then added a two-point convert to give the Panthers their first lead of the game at 15-14. That lead would not stand for long as Buchan put Holy Cross back on

Devoun Hallums threw touchdown passes to Daniel Mikl and Josh Krantz while Jake Reiter scored the third Hornets major on a 13-yard run. Frank Hurt now needs to win their final league game against Howe Sound Saturday. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at Frank Hurt.

The Surrey Eagles Michael BOOTH modest four-game win Sports Editor streak came to an end with a pair of tough losses in a homeand-home set with the Westside Warriors in B.C. Hockey League action last weekend. After opening the week with a 3-1 road win over Coquitlam Wednesday, the Eagles fell 4-2 in the Okanagan Friday before being tripped up 5-3 at home by the Warriors Saturday. In both games against Westside, the Eagles fell behind early only to make the game close in the third period before the Warriors clinched the win with an empty net goal. “In both games we might have taken 20 minutes off and it cost us,” said Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “We played hard for 40 minutes but that wasn’t good enough. Parity throughout the league is good this year and this shows our guys that you can’t take any time off if you want to beat some of the top echelon teams.” In Westside Friday, the Eagles gave up one goal in each of the first two periods and allowed another early in the third to fall behind 3-0. Surrey managed to cut the gap to 3-2 with goals from Brandon Morley and newcomer Josh Monk but Westside sealed Surrey’s fate with an empty netter. Saturday at South Surrey Arena featured another slow start from the Birds as Westside outshot their hosts 12-5 in the opening frame, scoring twice. The Eagles looked much better in the second where

they outscored the Warriors 3-1 to tie the game at 3-3. Morley, Hayden Trupp and Michael Stenerson each tallied once for Surrey. That was as close as the Eagles would get as Westside’s Quinn Gould netted what turned out to be the game winner midway through the final frame. Kyle Singleton sewed things up with an empty net goal in the final second. “We looked like a tired team in the first period but we came out strong in the second and third where we combined for 37 shots on net,” Erhart said. “We might have been unlucky not to score more but some nights that happens. “Perhaps a split may have been a more justified result but over the course of the season, things like this are going to happen.” Surrey opened the week in Coquitlam Wednesday where the Eagles finally earned their first road win in four tries against the feisty Express. Jeff Vanderlugt, Scott Holm and Tyler Morley provided the goals for Surrey while rookie netminder Andrew Hunt stopped 36 shots to earn first star honours. After playing in Langley Thursday, the Eagles play a return date Friday night at South Surrey Arena (7 p.m. start) and then host Cowichan Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) ❚ Erhart made one roster move last week, shipping 20-year-old forward Michael Krgovich to Salmon Arm in return for Monk, an 18-year-old defenceman.

There’s nothing worse than being stuck in a traffic jam. All that stopping and starting is enough to drive you mad, not to mention send you to the pump faster than expected after a trip that got you nowhere. One way to fight the cost of stopping, starting and standing still is to consider idle-stop or smart-stop technology. Available in most hybrids, the systems actually turn your engine on and off automatically. They’re usually engaged when your vehicle is stopped and your foot is on the brake for a few seconds. Once you remove your foot from the brake, the engine starts up immediately. Although not a new innovation, idle-stop technology is gaining popularity among drivers who want to reduce their environmental footprint and cut their fuel consumption costs. Some experts even predict that a third of all new automobiles will use some kind of idle-stop system by 2012. For more information on driving smart and saving money at the gas pumps, visit www.vehicles.nrcan. gc.ca. www.newscanada.com
