PROVINCE FINES FUNDRAISER Pub manager nailed for selling 50/50 without a licence to help fire victims

Kennedy’s Pub manager Sue Rees says she won’t pay the $575 fine she got for holding fundraising 50/50 draws without obtaining a licence.

❚PHOTO/Ted Colley

DELTA – Sue Rees Ted COLLEY knows her limit and Staff Reporter says B.C.’s gaming regulators have pushed her past it. Rees manages Kennedy’s Pub in North Delta, a cozy little watering hole right next door to the Ri-Don Apartments where a July 27 fire put dozens on the street with only the clothes on their backs.

Many were uninsured. “A lot of our regulars lived there. It was really sad. We had people who were homeless,” Rees said. Not content to simply feel sorry for their neighbours, the staff and patrons of Kennedy’s set to work raising cash, clothing and other donations to help out.

❚EDGAR DUNNING (1910-2010)

True gentleman’s class will never be forgotten

D

elta lost a true gentleman with the sudden passing of Edgar Clesson Dunning Saturday. Born in Elbow, Sask. on Jan. 7, 1910, Dunning celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year. Dunning was a fixture in Delta for decades after his family moved from Alberta in 1922, when he was just 12, to start The Weekly Optimist. He held pretty much every position at the Optimist over the years, including reporter, editor and publisher. He continued his affiliation with the newspaper throughout his retirement by writing his weekly “Rambling” column that brought the history of the municipality to life every Saturday. His last column was published on the day he died. Dunning was a vibrant presence in the community even as a centenarian, and could be found at many community events. He was a noted historian who loved to share the history of Delta with others. He earned great respect from all corners for his thoughtful approach and classy ways. It was often said that Dunning never had a bad word to say about anyone. His humour, sincerity and charm made him an endearing figure woven into the historical fabric of the community in which he was also its most trusted storyteller. Dunning was a founding member and first president of the Delta Historical and Museum Society and a former president of the Delta Board of Trade (now the Delta Chamber of Commerce).

He was involved with many groups, including the Kinsmen Club of Ladner, the first service club in Delta, which he helped form in 1935. He became its president four years later and just last year received Kin Canada’s highest honour by becoming a Hal Rogers Fellow. A music lover, Dunning, who played drums in his youth, was one of the founders of the Delta Community Band Society, the sponsoring organization for the Delta Community Band. He received numerous awards, including the first Freedom of the Municipality in 2004 as part of Delta’s 125th anniversary celebration. Other recognition included Citizen of the Year and a lifetime achievement award from the Delta Chamber of Commerce. The new municipalcommunity archives will include a reading room that bears his name. Dunning married Elsie Maria Bowing (1916-1998) in 1942 and they had two children, Susan and Gene. He had three grandkids and one great grandchild. – Delta Optimist

Cadieux gets cabinet seat

Robbery suspects nabbed

‘Rock’ missing since Friday

SURREY – Stephanie Cadieux is leaving the backbenches for a seat in cabinet. The Liberal MLA for Surrey-Panorama Ridge was promoted to Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Monday when Premier Gordon Campbell shuffled his cabinet. “I think this is an incredibly exciting move to put community, sport and culture in one ministry and recognize the contribution that volunteers and community make and that art and sport really bring people together in a way that not much else can,” Cadieux said after being sworn in. Her promotion was the big news for Surrey, with no other substantial changes for other government MLAs in this city. Kevin Falcon, veteran MLA for SurreyCloverdale, retained his minister of health portfolio. Cadieux was elected in 2009. – Tom Zytaruk

DELTA – Two armed robbery suspects arrested following a robbery in Surrey on Friday are also suspected of robbing a Subway sandwich store in North Delta earlier that day. Two masked men entered the Delta store, in the 7300-block of Scott Road, shortly after 10 a.m. One was gripping a knife and the other a gun. They demanded cash and the employees complied. They did not injure the employees and for some reason, took off with no money. “A short time later, it is believed the same suspects committed a robbery in the Surrey area and were subsequently taken into custody,” Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said. Their names had not been released by press time. – Tom Zytaruk

DELTA – Have you seen Shek Auyoung? The North Delta man, who also goes by the name “Rock,” has been missing since Friday night. He is Asian, 65, six feet tall, medium built and has salt-and-pepper shoulder-length black hair, a goatee and moustache, and has a tattoo of a bear on his left forearm. He also uses reading glasses. Delta police Sgt. Sharlene Brooks SHEK AUYOUNG said Auyoung has been going through “some difficult times and is believed to be suffering from depression and other medical concerns that require medication to manage.” His family is worried, she said. Anyone who knows where Auyoung might be is asked to contact the Delta police at 604-946-4411. – Tom Zytaruk

❚DELTA/Business suffers after competitor busted in drug raid

Mistaken identity plagues flower shop DELTA – A North Ted Delta florist says confu- COLLEY Staff Reporter sion over a drug bust back in mid-August is killing her business. On Aug. 13, police descended on JoJo’s Flower Shop, 9407 Scott Rd., and seized 3,600 opium poppy seed pods police believe were destined to be ground into doda, a powder used to brew a narcotic tea. Kris Sanderson owns Delta Flowers & gifts at 8047 Scott Rd. She says an initial report in a Vancouver daily said only that a North Delta flower shop was raided and ever since then, her business has dropped to nearly nothing. “I first noticed business falling off in August, but I put it down to people being away on holiday,” Sanderson said Monday. “When I really noticed it was in September. I’ve had people come in and say it must be me because I’m the only North Delta flower shop.”

Business is down 80 per cent and Sanderson’s convinced it’s because of the drug raid and that early report. When North Delta student Laura Szendrei, 15, was murdered in Mackie Park last month, Sanderson donated flowers for a memorial at the dead girl’s school. She got the shock of her life when a woman confronted her as she delivered the flowers. “She accosted me. She said, ‘How dare you come to this school and show yourself when you’re selling drugs.’ I told her it wasn’t me, but she didn’t believe me.” Several media outlets have since reported the name and location of JoJo’s, but Sanderson said people are still pointing a finger at her. Dozens of unsold roses are wilting in her cooler, their petals littering the floor. After five years in this location and never being a day late paying her bills, Sanderson is behind in her

rent and fears she might lose the business she loves. She’s seen lean times before, she said, but never like this. “I just want people to know it wasn’t me. It wasn’t Delta Flowers.” James Clayton Miller has a similar problem. He says people think he’s a pervert after a Now report of the conviction of North Delta’s James William Miller for sexual assault and other sex crimes involving a minor. Although he now lives and operates a business in Surrey, James Clayton Miller lived in North Delta for about 20 years. “I grew up in North Delta and people know me as James Miller of North Delta. I had somebody I know say he read about that and thought it was me. My business has dropped off lately and I’m afraid it’s because of that,” Miller said. “I need you to let people know it’s not me.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY – A Surrey Mountie has Tom ZYTARUK been charged with assault and assault Staff Reporter with a weapon after a 73-year-old man was tasered at Surrey Memorial Hospital in April. A Transit cop has also been charged with assault in connection with the incident. Both have been suspended from duty with pay and are to appear in Surrey provincial court on Dec. 7. According to a Surrey RCMP statement the elderly man, whose name has not been released, was arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital after allegedly causing a disturbance with a knife at a residence on the evening of April 22. Const. Mitchell Spears, who joined the RCMP in January 2008, is accused of tasering the man. He has been charged with assault and assault with a weapon.

GEORGE BEATTIE/ “Allegations of this nature are troubling for all of us who are entrusted with the public’s confidence.” Police say Spears’ alleged victim suffered a cut to his face that required stitches. The investigation was launched following a public complaint. Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser MacRae said such situations are “taken very seriously.” “In this particular case we moved forward immediately by commencing the investigation and modifying Const. Spears’ duty status,” he said. Transit Police Const. Ken Jansen, who was at the hospital on other business at the time, is also involved. He has been charged with one count of assault. George Beattie, acting chief of the Transit Police, said he is disappointed. “As soon as we learned of the nature of these allegations, we took immediate action to withdraw Const. Jansen from active duties so that he would have no further direct interactions with the public,” Beattie said. “Allegations of this nature are troubling for all of us who are entrusted with the public’s confidence,” he added. “We must now rely on the full process as set out in law to deal with these allegations.” tyztaruk@thenownewspaper.com

So far, they’ve raised $13,000, including $5,000 donated by the pub. Kennedy’s started a series of 50/50 draws to raise money for the cause and that got them in trouble with the provincial government. It turns out you can’t run a 50/50 without a gaming licence from the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch of the Ministry of Housing and Social Development. They call it gambling and as such, it must be licensed. Somebody dropped a dime on Rees and gaming officials sprang

into action. They sent a couple of their people to pose as customers and gather evidence. “They had two undercovers come in here one night and buy 50/50 tickets,” the pub manager said. “The next day, they came back and fined me personally $575.” Rees said she was unaware of the licensing requirement, she was just trying to help. “I told them I didn’t know about those rules and they said it’s up to you to find out. They handed me the ticket and I said, ‘There’s the door. I’m not paying.’ It’s ridiculous. We do

a lot for our community here; every Christmas we help 34 families. Last year, we raised $32,000 for them.” Now Rees wonders what hoops she and her customers will have to jump through and how much they’ll have to pay in licence fees just to be able to help. “Yeah, I’m nervous about our big Christmas fundraiser. I guess we’ll have to go to the gaming centre and ask them if it’s OK.” When asked for comment, officials simply referred the Now to the gaming licensing website. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

Shot himself by accident Boys followed home DELTA – Delta police are recommending that a North Delta man be charged with careless use of a firearm after he apparently shot himself by accident. The 25-year-old man is also facing charges of possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition, in connection with the Oct. 14 incident. It happened in the 8300-block of 116th Street. Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said the man sustained a gunshot wound to his “lower body” and that his injury wasn’t life threatening. “It has been determined that this was not either a gang-related or targeted attack,” she said. “It is believed that the male shot himself while handling a firearm.” His name has not been released. – Tom Zytaruk

DELTA – Delta police are looking for a white GMC pickup truck after two boys were followed while walking home from Nordel Shopping Plaza Friday. Their mom called police after the boys, nine and 11, told her a man had followed them. They said he was average size, had black hair and wore a baseball cap, a hoody, and a blue jacket and dark blue jeans. They said he followed them on foot, then ran back to a parking lot in the 8300-block of 112th Street, got his pickup truck and continued following them. Brooks said the truck had tinted windows, rusty wheel wells, and didn’t appear to have a back seat. There was a white rusty tonneau cover on the box, she said. – Tom Zytaruk

❚POLITICS

It’s going to take a lot more than a cabinet shuffle and a provincewide television address for Premier Gordon Keith BALDREY Campbell to even begin to recover in popularity. But some of the changes he’s made – or not made – provide some clues about what might be his comeback strategy. First of all, despite the fact that 16 ministers got new (or slightly new) assignments at the cabinet table, the shuffle itself did not signal any great change in the government’s priorities. The ministers of most of the key ministries – finance, health, transportation, forestry and attorney general – retained their portfolios. The biggest change, arguably, was moving George Abbott into the education portfolio. The government signaled two years ago that it had ambitious plans for significant reforms of the K-12 education system, and perhaps Abbott will be the one to finally carry them out. Abbott will also be the one who will square off with the B.C. Teachers’ Federation as it prepares to enter into contract talks. The BCTF will want a hefty raise, which the government will refuse to grant, and Abbott will be the government point man in the showdown that looms with the militant union. And putting Rich Coleman back into the solicitor-general’s portfolio – where he had served before – while allowing him to keep responsibility for social housing is another logical fit. He also keeps responsibility for gaming, liquor and ICBC, thus ensuring he remains a major force in government.

Cabinet shuffle offers clues to strategy

Former solicitor general John Les, who had to resign after it was revealed he was under a special prosecutor’s investigation, is no doubt the most disappointed person in the B.C. Liberal caucus. Even though he was cleared in that investigation, Les was not only passed over for cabinet promotion, but got the equivalent of the proverbial lump of coal: he’s now the parliamentary secretary for HST information. Good luck with that, John! Les’s seatmate in Chilliwack is also likely disappointed. Barry Penner moves from the high-profile environment portfolio to the more anonymous aboriginal affairs ministry. The shuffle also displayed Campbell’s penchant for tinkering with what actually constitutes a cabinet ministry. He created two portfolios out of thin air. We now have a minister for natural resource operations and – wait for it – a minister of state for “building code renewal.” But the rest of the cabinet changes were relatively minor and only one new face – Stephanie Cadieux from Surrey – was promoted from the backbench. There were no real demotions – no one was actually taken out of cabinet –

which may speak to Campbell having to be very careful about hurting anyone’s feelings in his party right now, given the party convention coming up in November. Campbell says he regards his current team as strong, with little need for new blood. He remains stubbornly optimistic he can pull both himself and his government out of the mess they find themselves, and in which he can do that with little change in the people around him. There was one important exception to that, however. After spending 13 years as Premier Gordon Campbell’s chief advisor, Martyn Brown has left the premier’s office to become a deputy minister. Replacing him is former deputy finance minister and ICBC president Paul Taylor. The importance of Brown’s departure cannot be downplayed. Few people last long as a chief of staff to a political leader and Brown’s survival in that post for so long speaks volumes about how much Campbell relied on him. Chief of staff can be an immensely powerful position, second perhaps only to the premier himself. Brown has been the unseen force in the B.C. Liberal government since it first took power in

2001. Like his predecessors, he seemed likely to last only a few years, but after a while it became apparent he was so intrinsically linked to Campbell that he wasn’t going anywhere. But now he has left (he’s now deputy minister of tourism, trade and investment) and it will be interesting to see what impact his departure has on Campbell’s strategic and philosophic approach to governing. I suspect Taylor’s priority will be to help devise a strategy to sell the HST to the public. He surely can’t be viewing his appointment as long-term employment, given the government’s low standing in the polls. KBaldrey@globaltv.com

We’re already investing in Surrey: former education minister

The Editor, Re: “Surrey Board of Trade joins fight to improve education,” the Now’s online edition, Oct. 22. I would like to add government’s voice to the conversation about Surrey education funding. We have been working closely with our partners in School District 36 to respond to Surrey’s unprecedented growth by creating more than 3,000 new student spaces in the district since 2005. In fact, since 2001 we’ve invested more than $219 million for 51 Surrey capital and seismic projects. Over the last 11 years, enrolment has grown by an estimated 8,931 students, a 15-per-cent increase unmatched by any other B.C. school district. We recognize that means there are unique challenges and we have taken steps to help. B.C.’s fastest-growing school district has recently received a one-time capital grant of $2 million. We are also looking at capital projects in the district for opportunities to include additional student space – for example: Hazelgrove Elementary, announced last week, required 40 spaces for full-day kindergarten, but we were able to add 50 additional spaces to address Grade 1-7 needs.

Volkswagen Original

Parts. Service. Accessories.

As well as these interim measures, we are working toward a long-term solution to address Surrey’s challenges in the 2011 capital plan, to be released this spring. Our government is continuing to invest in Surrey. We will continue to work closely with all B.C. school districts to ensure there are appropriate working and learning spaces for staff and students.

Sikh issue presents opportunity to grow as a community The Editor, Re: “Sikh days at school provoke parents,” the Now, Oct. 19. I would like to pick up on a point made by the parent interviewed for the article. Her understanding was that “in Canada, religion and state should not mix.” This doesn’t quite get it right. Canada does not have a formal American-style separation of church and state, nor do we have a strict policy of public secularism

like in France. That said, Canada is not a “faith-based” society either. So where do we stand? Somewhere in the middle. When issues arise in the intersection of our civic and religious lives, we can neither embrace nor dismiss them out of hand. As citizens in a participatory, multicultural society, our response needs to be more sophisticated. We do need to be vigilant that the public expression of our religious practices does not infringe on the rights of others. On the other hand, we have a responsibility to be open to learning about the beliefs and practices that are important to our diverse friends and neighbours. I am hopeful that the mid-November event planned at Senator Reid Elementary strikes a productive balance between these two considerations. I am also hopeful that the media coverage of the event includes the perspectives of people from a range of religious traditions, as well as the perspectives of people with no specific religious affiliation. This strikes me as a good opportunity to grow as a community, and I hope it goes well.

Sikhs in Surrey should respect significance of Remembrance Day The Editor, Re: “Sikh days at school provoke parents,” the Now, Oct. 19. A school is not the place to hold such an event. On Remembrance Day, lest we forget what the day stands for, schools are closed for a reason. Respect this day, take time to reflect that this day is in remembrance of all who sacrificed for our freedom – all races and religions. I am sure that there are Sikhs who fought for our or their freedom too. Respect this day. School is closed due to Remembrance Day and that’s that – lest we forget!

Businesswoman recognized for being ‘inspiring’ role model

Covered youth park will be first of its kind

SURREY – A local businesswoman has been honoured for being an outstanding role model. Nancy Shewfelt, a senior vicepresident of Wellington West, a Winnipeg-based wealth management firm, has won the Local Hero Award from Women of Influence. Presented by Deloitte, the awards luncheon took place in Vancouver on Oct. 19. Shewfelt says she was pleased to be in such stellar company. “I am humbled by this accomplishment,” Shewfelt said. “The other finalists are women who are

awe-inspiring role models who make a difference in our community. I am honoured to be recognized alongside these women and to be counted as their peer.” The award recognizes recipients for their leadership skills, ability to inspire others and extraordinary achievement. Charlie Spiring, CEO and chairman of Wellington West Holdings Inc., says Shewfelt has the singular ability to combine sharp business acumen with the personal touch. “We are delighted that Nancy has been honoured,” Spiring said.

NANCY SHEWFELT/ “I am honoured to be recognized alongside these women and to be counted as their peer.” “Nancy is an inspiring leader in our organization, not only as a family wealth management expert but also as a colleague and a member of our board of directors.” Shewfelt joined Wellington West in 2001. Kish Kapoor, president of Wellington West, says Shewfelt

has been instrumental in guiding the company through an incredible period of growth and expansion. “She exemplifies the very best in everything we all aspire to be,” Kapoor said. “She is a natural born leader with qualities that can inspire anyone to move mountains to make a difference in their communities.” The Wellington group of companies provides full-service brokerage, financial planning, asset management and capital market services. – The Now

SURREY – Work will begin next month on a $1.34-million covered youth park – the first of its kind in B.C. – in City Centre’s Tom Binnie Park. The facility will be located next to the Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre and will include a covered skate park, a ball hockey court, rain gardens and pathways. The park will be built by New Line Skate Parks Inc., the lowest of four bidders. New Line has already built three other skate parks in the city. The federal government contributed $486,585 to the project and the city will pay the balance from its 2010 capital budget. “We are committed to creating new opportunities for our youth to participate in healthy activities,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. Construction is slated to be complete by April 2011.

Delta approves plans to expand cemeteries DELTA – Civic politicians have approved expansion plans for both the Boundary Bay and North Delta cemetaries. The expansion plan for Boundary Bay includes the addition of 70 full burial plots, 485 niches and 15 boulder scattering areas at an estimated cost of $400,000. The North Delta Cemetery still has plenty of room, so the plan there focuses on visual enhancement. The expansion will be implemented in stages. Funding for the projects will be considered in the five-year financial plan.

DELTA – Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and a local group continued the push last week to get funding to deal with the silt issue in the secondary channels of the Fraser River. Huntington and two members of the Ladner Sediment Group made a presentation to the province’s select standing committee on finance and government services. LSG wants to see the channels dredged to remove layers of silt. Huntington said she has also been discussing the issue with provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. A meeting between the LSG and a ministry representative has been arranged.

SURREY — The Ballance Tom ZILLICH family is something of a staStaff reporter tistical oddity, with three of four kids coping with Type 1 diabetes. “It’s very unusual to have two kids with this, but three was almost considered impossible by people we talked with,” said mom Shelagh Ballance as her kids relaxed in their Clayton Heights home. Her sons Tyler, 11, and Maddox, 5, have diabetes, along with daughter Ashley, 9; Brandon, 6, is free of the disease, as is Shelagh. “Statistically, they say you’ll never see a family with four kids all with diabetes, but I suppose it could happen to us,” she said. “I hope not with Brandon, so we watch that he’s not feeling well or going to the washroom a lot or drinking a lot — those are the symptoms. We test blood sugars once in a while, him and me, just to be sure.” Type 1 diabetes results from the body’s failure to produce insulin. Tyler is old enough to use an insulin pump; his younger siblings require injections. For the Ballances, it’s pretty difficult to lead a “normal” life. A medical sharps container sits on the counter in their kitchen. Juice boxes, granola bars and other snacks are always on hand, in the event of low blood sugar. Dinner at a restaurant requires testing and injections. “It’s a lot of needles and poking,” Tyler said. “We don’t think anything about doing it, but some other people just kind of stare because they can’t believe what we have to do.” Because of health concerns, the kids must keep active — and they certainly do. “Thursdays are horrible nights for us — two football practises, plus cheerleading and two soccer practises,” said Shelagh. “And I play baseball, too, so if I’m playing that night, everything is nuts.” Happily, Shelagh has plenty of help from family and friends. “I wouldn’t be able to get it all done without them dropping off kids and picking them up, those kinds of things.… It’s a crazy life.” During sporting events and other activities, liability concerns complicate things. “We’ve had situations where coaches don’t want us to leave, because they want somebody there for the entire practise or game, because of the diabetes thing,” Shelagh said. “So even to go pick up another kid, it’s impossible

Diabetes-related products piled high on their kitchen table, Shelagh Ballance is all smiles surrounded by her kids (from left to right) Brandon, Ashley, Maddox and Tyler. ❚PHOTO/Sharon Doucette

because we can’t leave the site, because they don’t want something to happen to the (child) who is there.” It’s a similar story at school. “(Teachers and assistants) don’t do needles at school, and the child always has to initiate that,” Shelagh said. “Thankfully, Tyler is old enough now to help (with his siblings’ injections), because when he was little, for me, it’d be take off from work, go to the school, do the needle and then race back to work again.” Tyler was diagnosed with diabetes at two years of age. Since then, he estimates he has endured more than 17,520 finger pokes to check blood-sugar levels and close to 8,000 injections of insulin. As a “youth ambassador” with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Tyler is brave enough to tell his story to large crowds of business people, encouraging them to raise money during the Ride for Diabetes. The annual event, held this year on Sept. 24 in Vancouver, involves teams of people riding stationary bikes in an effort to find a cure for the disease. “No matter how much hard work we do to control our diabetes, sometimes we just cannot do anything about it,” Tyler says during his frequent speeches. “When we get high blood sug-

ars, we are very thirsty, grouchy and our stomach hurts. When we get low blood sugars, we are really hungry, dizzy and slur our speech. If our blood sugars get too high or too low, we can have seizures or go into a coma. As you can imagine, it makes it difficult for any or us to go to sleepovers, go to birthday parties or even get a babysitter!” For a recent Canucks hockey game, Tyler was given VIP seats in a Rogers Arena suite by the people who manage Metropolis at Metrotown. “We wanted to do something to give back to Tyler for all of the time he has spent helping to raise awareness of, and funds for, juvenile diabetes through his role as an ambassador (with the foundation),” said Artie Chumpol, public relations manager of the Burnaby shopping mall. Since 2002, the Ballance family has raised an estimated $20,000 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through a variety of fundraisers. “My wish is that there will be a cure one day soon for all us kids with diabetes,” Tyler says, “because the truth is, insulin is just a way to keep us alive.” When he grows up, Tyler wants to be a teacher. “He has big plans,” his mom said. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

Peanut butter: versatility that sticks to the roof of your mouth As a child, I remember when I first discovered the taste of a peanut butter and banana sandwich and wondered how many others knew about this phenomenon. The contrasting flavours Chef of salty nuttiness and the DEZ sweetness opened up a whole new world for me. I then started searching for other ways to indulge my newly established passion for peanut butter. Spreading a spoonful of it on each bite of an apple was my favourite. My fascination with peanut butter has matured since then, and I have discovered many ways to use this household pantry staple. The most important thing to keep in mind, however, is the growing number

These detours will be in place between midnight and 4 a.m. and will help ensure that construction crews and the travelling public remain safe while girders for the new 160th Street Overpass are placed across Highway 1. of peanut allergies today. Always inquire with dinner guests to discover any allergies you may not be aware of before planning a menu. Peanut butter has been in existence for hundreds of years and is a regular food item in over 70 per cent of households. Peanut butter, in moderation, is a good part of a balanced diet and a source of protein. Although it contains a large amount of fat, approximately 80 per cent of the fat content is unsaturated. Unsaturated fats have been proven to help reduce levels of LDL-type cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) without lowering HDL cholesterol (the good one). If the health aspect is your focus, however, you are much better off with natural peanut butters where the ingredient is just peanuts.

Peanut butters that are not natural may contain unhealthy, artificially produced trans-fats, which have been linked to increases in LDL cholesterol. The first alternate use for peanut butter that comes to mind is for making sauces and/or dressings. Use it as a base in a spicy peanut dressing for your favourite salad or in a peanut sauce for your next stir-fry. There are many recipes available to successfully accomplish these ideas. For a fantastic finishing touch, make sure that the garnish for these dishes includes a handful of roasted peanuts. For added dimension of flavour in chili, soups and stews, a tablespoon or two of peanut butter is fantastic. One substitution that always keeps me reaching for the peanut butter is to replace tahini. I love Greek hummus (ground chickpea dip), and it usually requires a sesame paste called tahini. Since I hardly ever have tahini on hand, peanut butter is a wonderful alternative. It is the same consistency as tahini and the flavour depth the peanut butter adds to the recipe is incredible. In addition to these uses, there are many desserts that feature the wonderful taste of peanut butter. I cannot stress

enough to take advantage of free resources like the library and the Internet for an abundant number of recipes. Also, the next time you have a case of the hiccups, swallowing a tablespoon of peanut butter will usually eliminate them. Dear Chef Dez, I like buying natural peanut butter for the health aspect of it. But because I have to store it in the refrigerator, it is terrible for trying to spread on toast. Any suggestions? — Ian B., Abbotsford Dear Ian, For the natural peanut butter at my house, we have a toaster oven and, once the bread has been toasted, we place a serving of peanut butter on each piece and put it back in the warmed oven for approximately 30 seconds (with the toaster oven off). Alternatively, if you don’t own a toaster oven, just microwave a portion for a few seconds. The “old school” way would be to plan ahead and leave some out at room temperature before breakfast time hits. Chef Dez is a food columnist, culinary instructor and cooking show performer. Clinics will help youth with mental health issues SURREY – It is estiAmy REID mated that at any time Now Contributor 15 per cent of children and adolescents in British Columbia experience mental health problems. This means that in B.C., about 140,000 children experience mental disorders that can cause distress and impair function at home, school and in the community. There are typically more than 600 children and youth present in Fraser Health Authority hospitals for acute mental health care in a year. The mental disorders can include anxiety disorder, any depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attentiondeficit or hyperactivity disorder and more. Fraser Health’s services include child

and adolescent crisis response, adolescent day treatment services and adolescent psychiatry in-patient beds. But what the area doesn’t have is great access to child and youth mental health services, said Dr. Rox Wand, who is heading up one of two new clinics at Surrey Memorial Hospital to help to fill this gap. The development of the clinics is a partnership between Fraser Health and the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH). The new clinics are the first step in creating a comprehensive network of child and adolescent psychiatry services. “For many years a lot of people in the region have been going to B.C. Children’s

Hospital for services relating to child and youth mental health problems,” Dr. Wand said. He provides consultation services in this field in Surrey, White Rock and Langley. He said there is a growing need to have these services close to home. “We have more children and adolescents in Surrey than exist in Vancouver and I think that we can’t rely on others to provide those services.” Dr. Wand is heading up the new NeuroPsychiatry clinic, which will see children from ages five to 18. The clinic will assess and treat children who have neurological psychiatric disorders relating to brain function, “but not psychologically induced problems,” he explained. Patients’ conditions could include seiz-

ure disorders, post-meningitis and head injury, complex attention deficit disorder, Tourettes disorder, fetal alcohol syndrome among others. Treatments will include educational approaches, medication or other psychologically-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Dr. Teresa Kope is heading up the second new addition, the Infant Psychiatry clinic, for children from birth to age five. It will deal with issues such as parent-child attachment, emotional or social development or challenging behaviour. This clinic will serve families who have concerns about how a child is developing emotionally or socially. Staff will look at risk factors and help families steer children in the direction of healthier development. Some of those risk factors could be how well children have bonded with their parents, what the stress is like in the family’s environment or if there is domestic violence. “We know that there’s really rapid brain development in the first three years of life so it’s really a critical time for children to develop in a healthy way,” Dr. Kope said. “If we intervene early, the hope is that we can prevent more serious problems down the road.” In addition to filling the need for child and youth psychiatric services locally, both of these new clinics will create teaching opportunities for medical students and residents. Surrey Memorial Hospital has been designated as a teaching hospital for the University of British Columbia. Dr. Wand said in order to train those medical students and psychiatric residents, the hospital must have child and adolescent services. With the addition of these clinics to treat young children, they will be qualified to do that. “These two clinics will be very important in training people who can come here and hopefully stay in the Fraser Health Authority after they complete their education programs,” Dr. Wand said. Both clinics are set to open later this year.

Southwest Hearing Clinic Peter Slobin How do I boost my immune system for the upcoming winter months?

Q A

The changing weather will lead to increased susceptibility for colds and flu. Here are a few ways to naturally boost your immune system: • Vitamin D and Essential Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA) through high quality fish oils • A diet focused on green leafy vegetables, light proteins, whole sprouted grains • Avoid mucous forming foods since mucous is an ideal breeding ground for viral conditions • Take Probiotics including acidophilus to ensure a healthy intestinal tract and sufficient infection fighting agents • Preventive herbs such as Astragalus, Ginseng, Bee Propolis, Bee Pollen, Natural Source Vitamin C, Reishi Mushroom and Cordyceps • Regular exercise to maintain cardiac health and lymphatic drainage • Sufficient sleep to wake up rested and energized • Minimize exposure to germs through regular hand washing and a clean environment • Create a balanced lifestyle by reducing stress factors At the onset of a cold and flu, herbs such as Echinacea, Goldenseal, Isatis (Indigo) and Baikal Scullcap can greatly reduce or eliminate full-blown symptoms. Herbs should always be used under the guidance of a licensed herbalist. If you have any questions on how to strengthen and maintain your immune system, please contact the Lifelong Health clinic.

Yes, hearing aids are definitely worth trying. The numerous benefits to your quality of life almost always outweigh the few imperfections of hearing aids. Often, people with negative reactions have older hearing aids that use outdated technology, or they may be among a small minority of people whose hearing loss is less treatable with hearing aids. Also remember that it is human nature to focus on what is not working well, even though these same people may be appreciating many advantages from their hearing aids.

Q

I have to admit, I am a sucker for Halloween. I have so many great memories of trick-or-treating as a child on the Prairies — when the temperature was so low and the snow so high that costumes were very limiting for children. Costumes needed to fit over a snow Kelley suit and it needed to keep you insulatSCARSBROOK ed. If it covered your face, it was better because it kept your face warm. But despite the restraints of the costumes, we always had fun. Today, we are seeing more and more of that kind of fun, with children and adults alike. Halloween is all around us now — in the stores and the neighbourhoods we live in. That’s right, Halloween has truly arrived. In years past, I have purchased our family’s costumes in September and had the decorations up by early October. I used to be the only one of my friends who did it that way. Today, I find more parents are decorating their homes, getting dressed up and really trying to take part in the night. For parents, I think it is a good excuse to escape the stresses in our lives for one night and become our favourite alter ego. Unlike Christmas, where there is a lot of expectation about gift-giving, Halloween is just about having fun. So in that spirit, I’ve included five must-do’s for the family at Halloween: ❚ Bake some Halloween cookies. You can either purchase some Halloween dough from the store or make your own. Add on some orange or black sprinkles and it’s an instant hit. ❚ Make your own Halloween decorations. This can be as easy as getting some black construction paper, white paint and a marble. The children roll the marble, dipped in paint, across the paper and voila, instant spider webs to hang! My daughter did this at her preschool and the kids loved it. ❚ Costume hunting. You can do this online to get some great ideas first (which gets the kids excited), and then find out how you can either make it on your own or where to buy it by comparative shopping. By doing this together as a family, it gets a dialogue going about the night. I also use it as a good opportunity to go over safety rules. ❚ Organizing Halloween games. One great one is bobbing for apples — with a twist. Instead of using water, the apples hang from a string and participants have to catch the apple in the mouth as it sways. It’s a great alternative, and there are no soaked little ones afterward. ❚ Create a fun and nutritious Halloween dinner before the children set out on their night of fun. This ensures their bellies are full of good food before they start filling it full of junk. Each year, we invite our children’s grandparents to join us for a dinner that always boasts my motherin-law’s spider-deviled eggs and a spooky bowl of chili. Happy Halloween!

Rested Eagles take three from rivals

Sports

The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles were Sports Editor tickled pink to sweep their slate of three B.C. Hockey League games last weekend. Sporting pink-accented jerseys in honour of breast cancer research, the Eagles hammered the Coquitlam Express 5-1 at South Surrey Arena Friday and then rode that momentum to win both ends of a home-and-home set with the rival Langley Chiefs the nest two nights. The Eagles knocked off the Chiefs 5-3 in Langley Saturday before slipping on the home pinks again for a come-from-behind 6-4 win Sunday. “It was nice to get these wins,” said Eagles forward Bradley McGowan. “Langley’s in first place and this was their fourth loss all year so it was nice to get that. “These wins are huge for us right now. We were on a little bit of a down slope for a while there where we were letting a lot of goals in but now we’ve got our defensive game in order and we played three really good games this weekend. We got some confidence after the two wins on Friday and Saturday and we went out there today and played awesome.” Surrey’s surge coincides with a timely break in the schedule. After a packed calendar of contests in September and early October, the Eagles enjoyed a 10-day break between Oct. 14 and 27 in which the players were able to rest up and the coaches had a chance to tweak several aspects of the team’s game plan. The results showed on the ice, especially on the Olympic-sized surface of South Surrey Arena. The Eagles allowed just one goal in 17 opposition power-play chances and outscored Coquitlam and Langley 5-2 in the third periods of the three games. “It’s funny because, of our 18 games, we’ve only played seven here at home,” said Eagles coach

Matt Erhart. “So we would work on things in practise here and then go play in smaller rinks like Coquitlam and Quesnel where it’s a totally different game. “We’ve been working hard on moving the puck quickly and using our speed. We have four lines who can skate up front and the defense moves the puck quickly so we can really spread the ice out and attack off the rush. Against teams we don’t play regularly, their defencemen get caught out of position and that opens up more space off the rush for us.” The Eagles’ team speed and quick puck-movement was showcased against the Chiefs Sunday afternoon in South Surrey. Langley grabbed a quick 2-0 lead only to have the Eagles storm back with goals from McGowan and Jeff Vanderlugt 82 seconds apart to tie the game before the first intermission. The momentum

carried into the middle frame as Daniel Gentzler and Michael Stenerson each scored once in the first three minutes to put Surrey ahead. Langley cut the gap to one goal before the end of the second and then knotted the game at 4-4 midway through the third. Surrey’s big guns answered on a late power play when Richard Vanderhoek drew a defender before sliding the puck across the goalmouth to a wide-open McGowan, who one-timed a shot under the crossbar above sprawling Chiefs goalie Wyatt Gelley. “Richie made an awesome pass to me,” said McGowan, who was named BCHL player of the week with nine points in the three wins. “We’ve been working on that one-timer a lot in practise and it finally worked in a game. As soon it left my stick I saw that (Gelley) was down and the shot was going up. It was a sweet feeling.”

Gentzler then iced the game with an empty-net goal. Saturday night in Langley the Eagles battled back from onegoal deficits three times before securing the win with a pair of unanswered third period goals. McGowan scored once and set up three more to lead Surrey. Vanderlugt netted a hat trick while Mitch Jones tallied once. Against Coquitlam Friday, the Eagles power play struck three times in the first two periods en route to a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes. The teams then traded goals in the final frame to make the final count 5-1 for Surrey. Michael Krgovich, Riley Sweeney, Scott Holm, Tyler Morley and Vanderhoek supplied the goals for Surrey. The Eagles are back in action Wednesday when they travel to Coquitlam for yet another game with the Express.

One week after picking up a default Michael BOOTH win, the Earl Marriott Mariners record- Sports Editor ed one on the field where they rallied with two late scores to calm the Rick Hansen Hurricanes 21-18 in senior boys high school football action. The game, played between class AAA Earl Marriott and class AA Rick Hansen goes into the books as an exhibition match but don’t sell the win short to the Mariners. “A win is a win,” said Earl Marriott coach Michel McKay-Dunne. “When I played at UBC for Frank Smith, he never called them exhibition games; they were nonconference games. I know where he was coming from because we were still competing. Exhibition, regular season or playoff, at the end of the day there is a scoreboard that tells you if you’ve won or lost.” Trailing 18-7 with three minutes to play, a twist of fate sparked the Mariners to victory. Marriott quarterback Cole Myer hit Bobby Devani with a pass, which the receiver caught and then dropped. Kevin Reimer alertly scooped up the ball and ran it into the end zone for a “look what I found” touchdown. The Mariners then executed a successful on-side kick, which in turn led to Myer finding Kobi Williams with the game winning touchdown pass. In other games, the Sands Scorpions are running out of time for building any playoff momentum. One week after losing to North Delta archrival Seaquam, the Scorpions were stung 21-16 by South Delta. Jacob Carvery scored on a 35-yard punt return and quarterback Jamie Al-Abed connected with Jordan Traversy for 30-yard TD to account for the Sands majors in the latest loss. The Frank Hurt Hornets took over sole possession of first place in class AA Tier 2 with a 28-12 win over the Robert Bateman Timberwolves of Abbotsford. Devoun Hallums connected with Tari Rai on a 70-yard TD catch in the first half before the Hornets took over the game in the final two quarters. Jeremy Reid scored two second-half TDs and Dylan Easley ran for another.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Travis Lulay - 14 I was born and raised in Salem, Oregon and live there during the off-season with my wife Kimberly along with my parents, siblings and extended family, who still call the area home. I’ve been around football since I was a young kid and I decided pretty early on that I wanted to train hard and get accepted into university so I could play at the college level and ultimately pursue a professional career. You could say that I’ve been successful in reaching my goals so far! I spent the 2002 to 2005 seasons at Montana State, where I set a school record for career passing yards, led my team in rushing yards during my senior season, and concluded my college career ranked fourth all-time in rushing yards and touchdowns – the highest total for any quarterback at Montana State. While I’ve spent much of the last several years with a number of different professional football teams, I’m happy to have had these opportunities to play the game I love. Whether it’s stints in Seattle with the Seahawks of the NFL, in New Orleans with the Saints or moving overseas to play with NFL Europa’s Berlin Thunder, I know these experiences have all contributed to making me the person and player I am today. With these experiences in mind, I remember what it’s like to be a young athlete with a dream of playing at the professional level which is a big reason why taking part in the Lions’ community initiatives is so important to me. Whether it’s acting as a guest coach at a local community football practice or helping run a Timbits Camp at our practice facility, it’s a rewarding feeling to know I could be inspiring a young person to pursue their goals in sports and in life. Lions quarterback Travis Lulay enjoys taking part in the club’s community programs and working with young people to help them pursue their goals.

ICBC and police are reminding drivers to slow down and adapt their driving speed to fall and winter road conditions. In the Lower Mainland, the number of casualty crashes due to driving too fast for conditions increases by over 40 per cent in December compared to October. “Wet road conditions are main factor of speed-relative crashes in the Lower Mainland,” said Jon Schubert, ICBC’s President and CEO. “Unfortunately, many drivers don’t adjust their speed and recognize that the posted speed limit is only for ideal or dry road conditions.” At Richmond’s Silver City parking lot, ICBC and the Justice Institute of B.C.’s driving instructors demonstrated how various driving speeds affect the time it takes to stop on wet roads. It was clear - the faster you go, the longer it will take you to stop. And in poor weather conditions, it will take even longer. Police were also on hand to remind drivers of the consequences of speeding in B.C. “If you are caught driving

too fast for the road conditions, you will be fined $167,” said Superintendent Mike Diack, RCMP. “As the weather changes and road conditions deteriorate, your chances of getting into a crash and being injured or killed dramatically increase.” “We can all help make our roads safer by making smart driving decisions,” said Jon Schubert. “That means allowing more time for travelling in wet weather and slowing down so you can see more of the road.” In addition to slowing down, ICBC is encouraging drivers to ensure their windshield wipers are in good working order and their tires are inflated at the correct pressure and appropriately rated for the weather conditions in their driving area. ICBC invests in road safety awareness campaigns and police enforcement activities to promote smart driving behaviour and help save lives. Take the ICBC drive smart challenge at icbc.com/drivesmart.

❚AUTOMOTIVE ❚MAINTENANCE

Industry expert answers antifreeze questions

2. Question: Is a flush necessary when changing my antifreeze/coolant? Answer: When changing coolant, it’s smart to do a complete flush. Just draining the system will not remove all of the coolant. If a full flush can’t be carried out, then the proper amount of a fully concentrated coolant should be added into the system before adding water. This will ensure the cooling system is completely full with the proper mixture of antifreeze/coolant and water. Make sure all the air is out of the system to avoid corrosion and ensure good heat transfer performance. 3. Question: How do I know if my cooling system just needs to be “topped up”? Answer: Prestone engineers first recommend that motorists monitor coolant level and appearance and if needed test their coolant to ensure it doesn’t need to be changed. You can use test strips or Prestone Coolant Tester (which can be bought at your local auto parts store) to do that. If just a top up is needed, use a formula that removes the guesswork (Prestone Long Life Premixed Antifreeze/ Coolant is a good choice.) It features a precise blend of 50 percent antifreeze/coolant concentrate for temperature and corrosion protection and 50 per cent demineralized water for ideal heat transfer protection; it is formulated and compatible for use with any antifreeze/coolant in both foreign and domestic cars and light duty trucks, old and new.

❚WEATHER

Get ready for winter

In winter conditions, having good tires is not always sufficient; there’s no substitute for preparing your vehicle thoroughly to be ready for whatever winter throws at you. It is strongly recommended that you make it a habit to check the weather report before leaving and to delay your departure or get a head start based on the forecast. You should also prepare an emergency kit containing a blanket, flashlight, matches, toque, mittens, and similar supplies in case you need them. Remember that it’s important to remove all of the snow from your vehicle to ensure maximum road visibility. These tips may seem simple, but they can make all the difference. For more details and plenty of other tips make a full stop at the Michelin Winter Driving Academy at www.michelinwintercentre.com. www.newscanada.com

5. Question: What is the proper water/antifreeze ratio, and why is it so important? Answer: The reason antifreeze/coolant and water are mixed at a 50/50 ratio is to lower the freeze point of the cooling system to -34°F

2007 TOYOTA SIENNA LE 8 PASS WITH LOW KMS $22,595 STK #T5562

www.jptoyota-surrey.com

6. Question: Do I need to monitor the coolant condition and appearance in the summer and winter? Answer: Yes, you should monitor your coolant level and condition throughout the year, as it enables the system to properly cool and heat your car’s engine. More information on this topic can be found online at www.prestone.com.

(-37°C) and to raise the boiling point of the system, in a vehicle operating at 15psi with a cap in good condition, to 265° F (129°C). Problems that can occur with a 30/70 percent mixture of antifreeze/coolant and water include: a raised freezing point, lowered boiling point and potential metal corrosion. Problems resulting from the over 70 percent antifreeze/coolant concentration may include slushing, additive stability, poor heat transfer, overheating, and of course, raised freezing point.

1. Question: When do I need to have my antifreeze/coolant changed? Answer: Change intervals can vary from vehicle to vehicle, from every two to five years, or 58,000-240,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. Always consult your owner’s manual for the proper change interval for your specific vehicle. And choose a good quality antifreeze/coolant like Prestone Long Life, which is designed for use with any antifreeze/coolant in any vehicle make or model. It’s perfect for technicians and consumers conducting a complete cooling system flush and refill. It is phosphate-, silicate- and borate-free and uses a special patented technology that provides extended life of the corrosion inhibitor package so that it lasts for up to five years or 240,000 kilometres (whichever comes first).

4. Question: How do I “top up” my antifreeze/ coolant? Answer: Nearly all vehicles today are equipped with a pressurized coolant recovery system. Part of this system is a plastic coolant expansion tank. It is usually located near the front of the engine compartment and is pressurized and connected to the rest of cooling system with a hose. You can monitor the coolant level by observing the coolant level in the expansion tank, and top up if necessary, according to instructions provided by the vehicle manufacturer in the owner’s manual or by the coolant supplier on the antifreeze/coolant label. Just be sure not to remove the expansion tank cap or the actual radiator cap when the engine is hot. Doing so can result in burns from the hot coolant/water mixture and/or steam.

Misleading by name, yet vital to the life of your car, antifreeze/coolant plays a critical role yearround in the healthy functioning of your vehicle, providing protection against overheating in the hot summer months as well as protection against freezing in the cold winter. Jay Buckley, technical training manager for Honeywell Consumer Products Group, answers the top antifreeze questions on consumers’ minds.
