Full-day class still leaves lots of time to be a kid Viewpoint

y son is five years old, which means he’s headed to kindergarten class today for the first time. He’s thrilled by the prospect of being with his buddies and meeting new friends, playing with cool new toys, story time, ham sandwiches packed into his beloved Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 backpack, all that good stuff. It’s a big day. For him, beyond the abbreviated hours of the first few classes, it will be a 9-to-3 daily adventure. Yes, full-day kindergarten is here and, we, his parents, are thrilled our local school is among the first wave in B.C. to offer FDK (as it’s known in bureaucratic circles) to regular-stream students. But not everyone is so excited about sending their children off to class at such a young age. Others can’t stomach the $280 million investment by the province to implement full-day kindergarten for more than half of all five-year-olds this fall, and all eligible kids by September 2011. That large chunk of change is in addition to the $144.5 million needed for 665 new and upgraded classrooms for all those knee-high newbies. It’s all so controversial, an entire Canadian website is devoted to the issue (fulldaykindergarten.ca).

Surrey firefighters raise $10K to fight MS SURREY – Surrey’s firefighters have won an award for their efforts in raising money to combat muscular dystrophy. Muscular Dystrophy Canada presented the city’s smoke eaters with its Public Relations Award of Excellence for 2009/2010 for their contribution of $10,000 for research and treatment. “That was a nice honour,” said Chris Keon, president of the Surrey firefighters union. Firefighters across Canada raised a total of $628,674 for the national non-profit agency that assists the more than 50,000 in this country who live with neuromuscular disorders. The Surrey Firefighters Association supports many of the city’s charitable organizations with donations adding up to millions of dollars. “Surrey firefighters support the Burn Fund, the school district’s breakfast program and the Surrey Food Bank’s single-mothers program,” Keon said.
continued from page 1 Meanwhile, heated debate about full-day K has fired up in newspapers (including this one) and among parents waiting to collect their kids in school playgrounds from Fraser Heights to Fort Nelson. In Surrey, I was surprised to learn 41 per cent of the district’s kindergarten students last year were enrolled in full-day classes – special-needs, Aboriginal and inner-city students. That’s a significant number of kids, so FDK can’t be all that bad. As of this week, full-day kindergarten will start up in 82 of the district’s 100 elementary schools, and about 73 per cent of all kindergarten classes. Schools were selected based on geography and space available, and some will also offer the previously standard half-day classes. The district estimates that of its 4,600 kindergarten students this year, 3,374 will be in fullday classes – a push made at the budget table to make it happen in as many schools as possible now, because it’s mandatory for every kindergarten student next year anyhow. It’s a similar story in Delta, where full-day K is in place in 15 of the district’s 24 elementary schools. Because not every school offers FDK this year, some parents are, or were, anxious to move their kindergarteners to one that does – or does not. It’s interesting to note that in Surrey, most of these cross-catchment kids are on the move to a FDK school, not the other way around. Maybe this has to do with parents’ desire to have kindergarten teachers become day care providers, maybe not. Truth is, it’s much simpler for a child to be at one place for most of the day and not shuffled from school to day care to home every few hours. Here’s my take: The expansion of the kindergarten program in B.C. will, as myriad experts in the education system believe, give our youngsters an early start at becoming a smarter, healthier person down the road. Kids learn best through play, and FDK will offer that play-based environment twice as long, twice as well. And when school ends for the day, there’s plenty of time for watching Hot Wheels Battle Force 5 and gobbling down halfeaten ham sandwiches.

SURREY – A trial date has been set in a drawnout leaky condo dispute between strata lot owners and Odyssey Tower Properties Ltd. Odyssey Tower Properties Ltd., the City of Surrey and a string of engineering, architectural and trades companies are being sued by strata lot owners of the 109-unit, 20storey condominium high rise in Whalley. A 60-day trial is scheduled to begin on Feb. 21, 2011 in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. The matter has been before the courts since 2003 and centres on a leaky condominium claim as well as claims arising from alleged structural deficiencies. The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for $7,300,000 in costs to repair the building envelope and structural components of Odyssey Tower, which is located at 13880 101st Ave. Odyssey Tower was developed and constructed between June 1993 and January 1995. According to court documents, water leaks were reported in late 1996 and by December 1998 there was “generalized water ingress” when it rained. – The Now

Times have changed. The government’s fortunes have fallen sharply since it announced last year that the HST was coming to B.C. They continued to plunge as documents came to light earlier this week showing Finance Minister Colin Hansen and other senior members of the Liberal caucus were talking about the pros and cons of the tax well before the May 2009 election campaign, That was the same election campaign in which Campbell et al said unequivocally a Liberal government would not implement such a tax. The Liberals were returned to power and promptly reversed themselves by signing a deal with Ottawa to adopt the HST. The belief they were bamboozled is not playing well with Surrey voters. “That’s crap. That’s lying straight out,” said Brad, who declined to give his surname. “He (Hansen) denies it? He’s lying through his teeth.” The newly-obtained documents show Hansen – who claimed the HST was never “on the radar” until after the election – received briefing notes from provincial bureaucrats outlining the concessions B.C. could expect to receive from Ottawa in

Court rejects bid to block expropriation in Whalley and failed to consider alternate designs for the parking garage that might have eliminated the need to take the other parcel. Dales also asked the court to strike down the expropriation on the grounds that the city intended to provide a benefit to a business, contrary to the Community Charter, by allowing private companies to develop land in the area. According to Dales, a city representative told him private
developers would be involved. The city argued the statement was hearsay and inadmissible. Surrey also argued that even if it was true, the statement didn’t necessarily apply to the Dales properties, since the city owns more than 20 parcels in the subject area. Sports groups get some cash
Who you callin’ banana head?
A number of local sports groups are getting a bit of a boost from Victoria. The Crescent Beach Swim Club will get more kids in the water, thanks to $42,000 in community gaming grants for programs that teach youth teambuilding and engage them in healthy lifestyles. As well, White Rock Divers have $33,500 coming their way for springboard diving instruction. The White RockSouth Surrey Minor Football Club is getting $25,300 for its football and cheerleading program, while the Newton Figure Skating Club is looking at $16,000 for ice skating instruction. Rounding out the local list of gaming grant recipients is the Surrey Orcas Water Polo Club. It will receive $7,100 for its core program and Surrey Orcas Elementary School Initiative. This round of funding saw a total of about $9.2 million handed out to 457 groups around the province. – Carolyn Cooke

It’s got a pretty good name, but can the B.C. First Party amount to anything more than yet another Keith fringe party desBALDREY tined for irrelevancy? In most situations, I’d say the odds were extremely long that it would become anything more than a hobby horse for the handful of people involved in it. But with the B.C. Liberals teetering on the edge of disaster, it’s worth pondering what could happen if that party’s coalition of interests breaks up before the next election. And with the likes of Bill Vander Zalm and Chris Delaney lurking around the political landscape and continuing to poke the Liberals in the eye at every opportunity, all bets are essentially off when it comes to foreseeing how the centre-right vote in this province is going to be distributed come the next election. The B.C. First Party was registered with Elections B.C. by a couple of former Conservative activists, including one – Sal Vetro – who is directly associated with Vander Zalm (he was his official agent for the anti-HST petition). They claim the party would brand itself as a centrist party, which could potentially appeal to bigger pool of voters than the more narrowly defined B.C. Conservative party. But attracting the right kind of leader is one of the keys to any chance of even modest success. So far, neither Vander Zalm nor Delaney has said they are interested in joining the new party. Delaney is still active in the seemingly-moribund B.C. Conservative party, but he’s close to resigning because of prolonged in-fighting among the few people active in the organization.

Big question now is, which party will be number two?
At the moment, both Delaney and Vander Zalm have more political profile than any other non-elected activist on the political scene. They are in the news constantly as a result of their successful petition campaign, and will continue to be in the public eye as the government goes through what could be a lengthy process in determining what to do with the HST. Delaney’s been a party leader before, when he headed up the doomed Unity Party in 2001 (even getting a spot in the televised leaders’ debate in that year’s election campaign). And Vander Zalm, of course, is a proven campaigner and one whom the television cameras love (until he actually gets power, which is when his weaknesses come to the fore). While I don’t see Vander Zalm getting back into electoral politics (I think his wife Lillian would banish him to the garden if he did) I can see Delaney taking a stab at things. He’s a pretty good communicator, although a somewhat prickly personality may have to be held in check if he expects to make progress.
In any event, the time seems right for someone or some party to seize the obvious anti-government sentiment that is building in this province and do something with it. The NDP always struggles with gaining even a percentage point or two in the popular vote in every election, so it would appear to have limited growth potential. Of course, if the B.C. First Party mobilized itself and actually picked up a significant chunk of voters, it would virtually guarantee an NDP government because it would split the vote with the B.C. Liberals. The current situation has some striking parallels to the one this province faced back in 1991. Back then, a coalition government that had been in power for too long was crumbling right before our very eyes. Its supporters went looking for an alternative, and for almost all of them the NDP certainly wasn’t that alternative. Then along came Gordon Wilson, who breathed life in the dormant B.C. Liberal party, and he almost stole the 1991 election on the strength of a single, throwaway sound bite during the televised leaders’ debate. But he succeeded in splitting enough votes to allow the NDP to win.
Are we headed toward the same kind of scenario? Ordinarily, I’d say the idea would be far-fetched. But we are not living in ordinary times. Our political scene is fracturing, a fervent populism seems to be sweeping the land, and the desire for change is in the air. It seems the most unanswered question is not which party is going to win the next election (increasingly, that would appear to be the NDP), but which party is going to finish second. The odds favour the B.C. Liberals being that second-place finisher, but don’t completely count out any alternative, whether it’s B.C. First or something else. KBaldrey@globaltv.com

Waiting for the fire’s deliverance Wren, Robert Hooke and dozens of others who deluge King Charles II with their plans to rebuild. Nothing is as desirable as a disaster. The Great Fire left two thirds of the City of London a tabula rasa, a slate scraped clean, on which they could build anew. It’s been said that the impulse to destroy is also a creative impulse, and that’s at least partly true. Disasters are a chance for a fresh start. Most recently, it’s been put into words by Rahm Emanuel, one of Barack Obama’s chief political operatives. “You never let a serious crisis go to waste,” Emanuel said. “And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

That bleak impulse underlies everything from economic stimulus (“Now we can finally build that bridge and fill all those potholes!”) to those whose politics put them at the fringe of public opinion. Not from the hordes of the poor who are camping in parks, or being dispersed to prevent riot and rebellion. No, the glee comes from Christopher
Until a hurricane drifts across the warm waters of the Gulf and hits Category Five. Until the big one shakes Tokyo to its foundations. Until the Dow finally succumbs to panic and the rot of bad loans and plunges down below 5,000. Until the asteroid falls. Then, with that great blank canvas, we can build something, even if we know it would be hard and ugly. What the heck are they doing here?” The sound of announcer Andre Volkow’s sarcastic words echo off the grandstand as dust fills the warm evening air. It’s race night at Action BMX, the track in Newton with a ceiling of highvoltage power lines. At the moment, the determined two-wheelers are doing their best to win and also electrify a small crowd, mostly family and friends, gathered to watch rubber tires grip asphalt and dirt when they’re not flying through the air. The action happens every Thursday night, plus Monday practise sessions — and the age of some riders might surprise you. Dale Murphy is 50, and he’s dressed in BMX racing gear similar to that worn by his three teenaged sons. Full-face helmet? Check. Gloves for the best grip possible? Check. Cool racing jersey with name on the back? Absolutely. Before races start for the evening, Murphy quietly goes about his task of preparing the starting area, which he and others with the BMX club are rebuilding with concrete. “It’s all volunteer work, so it’s just some extra hours down here,” Murphy says with a shrug. “If I wasn’t doing that over the past month, I’d be training a lot more. This will make the track a lot better, though.”
Like “Superman Murphy,” George “Old Dog” Kreuzkamp grew up in the 1960s, at least a decade before bicycle motocross — aka BMX — became something of a subculture in the dirt lots of California before spreading to the rest of the world. For the past 11 years, Kreuzkamp has raced at the Action BMX track, a 20-minute drive from his home in Cloverdale. He was 38 at the time; now he’s pedaling his way toward 50. Back in the late 1990s, he and his kids, the oldest of whom was seven at the time, did a lot of moutainbiking. “We’d be out on the trails and with people of different age, and it’s different pacing out there,” Kreuzkamp recalls. “So we started coming out here and he raced against his buddies and I got to race against my buddies, the older guys. So it’s nice that we can share an activity like this and also be involved with our own group of friends.” On the local BMX scene, which includes tracks in Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows and North Van, Action BMX has grown from among the smallest clubs five years ago to one of the largest and most active, Murphy says. Two years ago, an average of around 60 riders would come out for race night. A year later, it was 80. Now the number is close to 100 every Thursday night during the season, which runs from March to October. On race nights, would-be riders can sign up to get involved in one of five skill classifications and age/gender categories,

with loaner bikes available. Insurance fees for the season need to be paid, plus a $5-a-race payment before 7 p.m. start time (one race consists of three “motos,” or heats, on the snake-like track). Larger “cruiser” bikes with 24-inch wheels are preferred by older riders such as Ruth Schmidt, a mother of two who lives in North Delta and in her second year of BMX racing. She just turned 46, and races against anywhere from three to seven women her age, and thereabouts. “Some of them are closer to 30 (years old),” Schmidt says with a laugh. “The first time out here, I thought I could do pretty well against some of these girls in a race, but looks can be deceiving. I ended up last, last, last and last, and I’m still close to last every race. But it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s the fun and friendship you have with others at the track.” Schmidt got involved after her then-preteen daughter, Tara, asked for a BMX bike. While surfing the internet, they viewed a race on Youtube, discovered the Action track and bought a racing bike for Tara, now 14. “At first,” Schmidt relates, “I had no inclination of racing, but then I met some of the ladies and other people here. They all wondered why I wasn’t racing, and I thought I had the perfect excuse: ‘I don’t have a bike’ — until one of them
RUTH SCHMIDT, 46/ “I thought I had the perfect excuse: ‘I don’t have a bike’ — until one of them said, ‘Oh, my husband isn’t using his…’” said, ‘Oh, my husband isn’t using his, I’ll bring it here next week.’ And here I am.” Schmidt, a newlywed who works as an emergency-services operator in Surrey, crashed her bike during her first race. “I got up and finished the race, figuring it couldn’t get any worse than that.… The corners are a little scary, pretty intimidating, and it can be humbling. It’s fun, though. At the end of the race, your heart is pounding and you can barely catch your breath, and if you get off your bike too fast you could fall down because sometimes the legs just give out. And then somebody will come over and ask, ‘Well, how was that 45-second ride?’ That puts it in perspective.” Murphy, who serves as president of Action BMX when not selling sunroom and patio covers for a living, goes to the gym to prepare for races in the 45-and-over category. “It’s a pretty good form of exercise,” he says. “To be really fast, though, you have to do a lot of training. There are people who come here just to
race, but if you want to be fast you gotta exercise three times a week to get in shape for that.” And no, he can’t beat his three teen boys — Cameron, 18, Ryan, 16 and Kyle, 14. “Once they hit 13, they just kind of started going by me,” Murphy says with a laugh. He’s glad that one day eight years ago, he and his family explored the BMX action happening in Newton near a curved stretch of 75th/76th Avenue, a couple blocks west of 128th Street. “It’s a good sport for multiple families, because it all happens at one time at the same place. You can have little kids (as young as four years old), big kids and even parents racing at pretty much the same time. It’s not like soccer or something, where you have one kid at practise one day, an older kid on the field two days later, that kind of thing. It’s great that way.” This sentiment is echoed by transmission repairman Kreuzkamp who, despite a broken collarbone or two, gets a kick out the camaraderie of the BMX track. “We’re all here to help, too, with the new guys just starting out,” he says. “There’s always a new bunch of suckers… I mean, new riders, so we help them get started with everything. Every year we get some new competitors, so it’s fun to see them progress and have fun and learn the ropes. It’s a real fraternity that way.” tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

Annual event brings community together
Facility gets residents moving and socializing

Community, celebration and education are just a few of the founding principles of the annual Fleetwood Festival. “It’s one way to bring the community together,” said Rick Hart, the president of the Fleetwood Community Association, which puts on the event in partnership with the City of Surrey. Hart has lived in Fleetwood for about 20 years and said he started the festival “to have a day of celebration in the community.” The Fleetwood Festival has been fortunate enough to last 12 years now, when most festivals tend to die out after only a few years, said Hart. “It wasn’t easy,” he said. But with help from the community, Hart managed to find a way to not only keep the festival going, but to make it grow. As time has gone by more community organizations have gotten involved and contributed to the festival, Hart said. “It has grown into being a very stable festival. In most cases people look forward
to it every year.” Since the festival has been around for so long, it has become a tradition for some families, according to Hart. People who came to the festival 12 years ago with their parents are now bringing their own kids. The Fleetwood Community Association’s role in putting on the festival has slowly become smaller as the community gets more involved. “The community has pretty well taken it over,” Hart said. This year, the festival will have activities such as kite making, mini golf, an outdoor café with music performances, dancers, balloon animals, face painting and Henna art, Hart said. There will be organizations from all over Surrey participating in the event, including the RCMP, the Surrey Public Library and ICBC. This year the association is going to expand some of the activities into the new park next to the community centre. The park has allowed them to stretch the festival from a small green space at the community centre to a much larger space, said Hart.

The chance to socialize and to lead a healthier lifestyle are two of the best things the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex has to offer. People come in and they become part of the family and they are happier and living a better lifestyle, according to Kerry Marion, a personal trainer and fitness instructor for the City of Surrey. “I feel like I contribute to that,” she said. “I promote health and wellness to them, I can help them empower themselves to live a healthier life … which down the road will keep them healthier longer,” Marion said. Marion is at the Sport and Leisure Complex six days a week either to work or exercise herself. She trains four people per week, and teaches classes such as aqua fit and spinning. People come to the classes to socialize as much as exercise, Marion said. She works with people with ages ranging from 11 to 65 years old. For youth who aren’t into aqua fit and
spin classes, the Surrey Sports and Leisure complex is home to clubs and teams that can help them stay fit. The Surrey Orcas Water Polo team practises and competes in the complex’s pool. There is a social and community aspect to playing water polo, much like there is with fitness classes. “Clubs like this build families, not just kids,” said Barbara Cox, president of the Surrey Orcas Water Polo team. Parents don’t just drop their kids off at the pool and then leave; they are invited out to games and encouraged to help with score keeping and other jobs, Cox said. “I spend every weekend with my family because I am out there on the pool deck as well.” A lot of kids, much like her own, get involved in water polo because it is a good alternative for those who like being in the water, but don’t necessarily like swimming lengths up and down the pool, and who may not be fast enough to compete in swimming competitively, according to Cox. There will be flyers available at the Fleetwood Festival with more information about joining the team.

Centre gives seniors place to learn, sing and dance Whoops Giving back to the community is an important part of Mildred Davies’ life. The feeling of needing to give back was what compelled the 73-year-old to become the chairperson for the Fleetwood Seniors Centre. “I felt that it was a time in my life where I could give back to the community and I also saw a need for it in the community,” she said. “Even though it takes a lot of my time, it is well worth the time.” Davies has been involved with the centre for six years and has been the chairperson for two. “It became my passion,” she said. There are many seniors in the area, so it is important to have activities for them to help keep them out of care homes, Davies added. The centre offers a wide variety of different programs and activities for seniors to participate and volunteer in. The City of Surrey puts on some of the programs, while the senior planning committee at the centre organizes others. Activities include knitting, card games
such as bridge and cribbage, daily exercise programs and singing groups. Davies is especially proud of the computer club the centre offers. For a long time, seniors resisted computers but now they realize that they need to be able to use them and the program helps teach them, she said. The centre often holds social events, including a Friday evening dance once a month. “Nothing is more heartwarming than seeing an 88-year-old up on the dance floor,” Davies said. The Seniors Centre is largely volunteerrun. “Without the volunteers we would not be able to operate,” said Davies. Right now, they have mostly seniors who volunteer but they encourage everyone to come out and help. Volunteers will be selling slices of pizza, dessert and drinks in a “European-style bistro” at the Fleetwood Festival this year, according to Davies. There will be a guitar player and an accordion player performing. The profits from food sales will be going partly to the festival and partly to the centre’s senior planning committee.

From the moment the walking trail was put in at the new park beside the Fleetwood Community Centre, people were drawn to it. “As soon as it happened people came to it like a magnet,” said Rick Hart, president of the Fleetwood Community Association. He describes the success of the park so far as being “over the top.” Funding from the provincial government to put in exercise equipment for seniors was what jump-started the plan to build the park a couple of years ago. “Seniors’ equipment is only one component,” according to Hart. There is also the walking trail, and a playground for kids to play in. The park was made to be enjoyed by everyone in the community. It was designed to keep a balance between the needs of the seniors in the area and everyone else’s needs, said Hart. Before the funding got the project started, the space was just an empty field that was going to be used to compliment the community centre.
The newly-built park has been there for more than one year. The feedback “is all positive,” said Mildred Davies, president of the Fleetwood Seniors Centre. The Seniors Centre, located in the Fleetwood Community Centre, hasn’t begun to implement specific programs that will take place in the park. This summer some of the exercise classes the centre runs had the opportunity to go outside and utilize the walking trail and the exercise equipment, said Davies. They encourage the seniors who come to the centre to use the park. “It is used all of the time,” Davies said. People come and go all day long. “It is a great addition.” In the future there will be a project that will bring together all generations to help and beautify the park, said Hart. This would include planting bulbs and creating an arbor at the entranceway. The intent is to get together all types of people, whether they mobile or not, and have them participate in the project, which will allow everyone the chance to enjoy “the fruits of their labour,” Hart said. There will also be a “name the park contest,” as the park still has no moniker.

Security threat stalls trip to Mrs. World pageant in Korea
SURREY — Jane Gagne will have to wait another eight months for her shot at the Mrs. World title. A security threat has forced event organizers to postpone the pageant, which was set to happen in Korea in October. The event has been moved to May 2011, giving Mrs. Canada more time to prepare. The pageant is limited to married women such as Gagne, a Clayton Heights model, commercial actor and JANE GAGNE business owner. “I was ready to go, starting to pack, and then I got an email saying it’s all been postponed,” Gagne said. “It’s unfortunate it’s happened, but understandable. Eight more months is a
long time to wait, but proper plans have to be in place.” Pageant organizers aren’t saying what kind of threat to the event was identified by a U.S. agency. “They’re investigating it,” Gagne said. “They said they’ve never had this issue anytime, anywhere else.… It may or may not still be held in Korea.” Gagne, 29, has competed in, and won, various pageants at the local and national level over the past eight years. There is no qualifying pageant in Canada for the Mrs. World competition, so Gagne was selected based on her online application. For three weeks, the Mrs. World pageant will take her away from her baby boy, Christian, and new husband, Michael. The postponement won’t cost Gagne any money, and all of her sponsors are still committed to the cause, she said. — Tom Zillich

Method 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9 x 13 inch cake pan with baking spray. Tip: Line the pan with parchment paper, leaving the ends sticking out to make the uncut product easier to remove from the pan once cooled. 2. Combine the whole wheat flour, quick oats, raisins, ground flax seed, baking soda, ground cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. 3. Beat the butter and Splenda Brown Sugar Blend together in a separate bowl. 4. Add the apple sauce, vanilla extract and eggs to the butter and Splenda/butter mixture. Continue beating until thoroughly combined. 5. Combine the mixtures in the two bowls together (it will be a very thick batter). 6. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. 7. Bake for 18-22 minutes until firm. 8. Cool in the pan to room temperature. It is important for it to set up firm enough to cut into bars. 9. Cut into 16 equal bars by removing the product from the pan first. Enjoy immediately or freeze individually.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Jon Hameister-Ries - 67 I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta and didn’t begin playing football until my senior year at Strathcona High School when my team went undefeated and won the city and provincial championships – I’d say that was a pretty good start to my football career! Following my high school graduation, I had an opportunity to head south to continue my education and play football for the University of Tulsa, which was a long way from home but turned out to be one of the most positive experiences of my life. After four years on the Golden Hurricanes’ offensive line, I was excited to hear I’d be returning home to Canada after I was selected by the Lions in 2006 CFL draft. Now in my first full season on the Leos’ offensive line, I truly enjoy coming to work every day and playing football for a living. My teammates on the offensive line would do anything for each other and it’s good to know that the guys you’re going into battle with are people you can count on. From a very young age, I’ve always believed in the importance of higher education, which is why I completed my MBA at Tulsa last year. As a guy who has had a couple of injuries in his career, I know that football isn’t forever and it’s important to look ahead to the future in preparation for the next phase in life. For that reason, I really enjoy taking part in the club’s Lions in the House program. In today’s world, youth are faced with many decisions that can ultimately determine their future and it’s a good feeling to know that I might in some small way inspire a high school student to make positive life choices. 090710

This may not seem like much, however, today Canadians own more than 19 million vehicles. We typically drive more than 300 billion kilometres per year, emitting more than 85 million tonnes of greenhouse gases. So it’s easy to see that changing the way we drive – even slightly – can have a big impact on our wallets and the environment. For example, if all drivers reduced unnecessary idling by three minutes a day, every day, we would save more than $630 million per year (assuming a fuel cost of $1/litre). What’s more‚ we would eliminate 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. This change would save more than 630 million litres of fuel and be the equivalent of taking 320,000 cars off the road for the entire year. While reducing idling alone will not solve the climate change program, it is a step in the right direction and it’s easy to do.
