❚EDUCATION/Carole James slams province as local schools get ready for ‘tough start’ to year
Surrey ‘ripped off’ as schools rely on portables New Democrat leader Tom ZYTARUK Carole James says the Staff Reporter Liberal government could use some learning assistance itself when it comes to funding B.C.’s public education system. The leader of the Opposition was at Newton’s Panorama Ridge Secondary School on Monday to decry what she says is the provincial government’s shortsighted approach to funding, especially in evergrowing Surrey. Flanked by local NDP MLAs, James
was in Surrey as part of her province-wide tour focused on public education. She’s predicting a “tough start” to this school year, thanks to underfunding. “They expect school boards to squeeze when there’s nothing left to squeeze.” But in her government’s defense, education minister Margaret MacDiarmid noted that under the NDP in 1988, Surrey had 363 portables and now, under the Liberals, has 232. Since taking power in 2001, she said, the Liberals have built nine schools and 51

projects in Surrey, totalling $219 million. That, MacDiarmid said, is “by far and away the greatest investment in any district.” Lynn Walters, the vice-president of the
school’s parent advisory council, said four of her daughter’s Grade 9 classes will be held in portables this year, without direct access to a washroom or the internet. Panorama Ridge school opened only four years ago, with under 1,000 students, but already has 11 portables and a projected student population this year of 1,500. “The children are our future,” Walters said. “No future should be in that (a portable).”

❚FEATURE/Reporter chases lead the old-fashioned way – and puts a compelling face to poverty in Surrey
HOT ON THE TRAIL OF RON’S STORY Story and photo by Amy Reid
I
t was his sign that caught my eye: “Need a job. Looking fore work. Hard working. Reliable. No addictions. No alcohol.” I have lived in the downtown Surrey area for a large part of my life. I had never seen a sign quite like this. I thought it was quite the advertising technique. He was walking up 104th Avenue just past King George Boulevard. He looked like he had a tough life but I wasn’t sure if he was homeless. I turned my van around, hoping I would be able to find him. And I did. I saw him approaching a building at the corner of 104th Avenue and 134th Street. I came to discover the Surrey Urban Mission operates out of said building, among other groups. I also came to discover that Ron Charbonneau was his name. And on the side of the road, he told me his story. Ron is new to the area, previously residing in Vancouver. The building he lived in while in Vancouver was infested with spiders, cockroaches and was “falling apart.” I was sort of right – he wasn’t quite homeless. He was living in the area with someone he knew, but they weren’t getting along, he explained. His roommate had accused him of bringing in bugs and cockroaches, which he said naturally ended in an argument. Ron had just been to The Front Room, he told me. The Front Room is a homeless outreach program. It’s a 24hour drop-in centre. It provides showers, laundry, telephone, coffee and more to those in the area. The Front Room helps people to overcome barriers, such as income, addictions and mental health conditions. And now Ron was coming to the Surrey Urban Mission, which is why he was here. Ron told me he worked at B.C. Place for two years as a custodian but was laid off. He said he didn’t have enough hours to collect Employment Insurance. Ron went on to say that he had an elbow injury, among others, which he said makes it hard to lift heavy items. But he wanted a job. “I don’t like not working,” he said. He handed me his resumé and told me to keep it. I saw three letters of recommendation attached to his resumé. All three were from staff at the LifeSkills Centre in Vancouver, which provides all kinds of support and aid to street-involved people. So I took down their names and decided I would call them the next day. Ron went on to tell me about his dog, who was turning 12 this year. He said he rescued the dog from someone in Alberta after seeing it being abused at only nine weeks old. He also told me about his rabbit. They were his babies, he explained, showing me pictures that he always carried with him. He told me that most of the money

he made went straight to his rabbits and – er – cigarettes. Ron was almost out of food for them, he said. He tried his hardest to fight tears, but a few came anyway. So I thanked Ron for his time and went back to another assignment.
His bike ‘probably keeps him happy’ Within the hour, I received a call from a number I didn’t recognize. It was Ron calling from the Front Room. He left me a message to thank me again for my time and to tell me he had a job interview the next day to work at the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). He asked me to call back and leave a message for him. The next morning, I hadn’t heard back from him. So in the meantime, I got in touch with Allison Laing, one of the co-ordinators at the LifeSkills Centre who had written one of his letters of recommendation. She immediately knew who I was talking about. “He’s very friendly. He’s a good guy. “He’s got a great dog,” she added, chuckling. “One of the most amazing things is that he rides his bike all the way from Surrey. It’s probably what keeps him so happy.” Laing said Ron had been volunteering there for more than six months. She had heard him talk about working at B.C. Place, but couldn’t verify it. When Ron lived in Vancouver, he went in to volunteer a couple times a
week, she said. Now, living in Surrey, he usually comes once a week – on his bike – and washes dishes for the 200 or so meals they serve up. Laing said most of the volunteers are people who are involved in street life and want to give back. “Ron is kind of an exception. He is out of the neighbourhood, for one, and not as entrenched in street life as a lot of our other volunteers here.”
There is help available for Ron As the days passed, I found myself wondering how Ron was doing. We were playing quite the game of phone tag. I would leave a message for Ron at the Front Room. I would miss his call, so I would leave another message. This repeated for days. Then I got a call from Jonquil Hallgate, executive director of the Surrey Urban Mission. I had met her in passing the day that I met Ron. Hallgate told me she had seen Ron again and he had told her that he needed housing ASAP. “Unfortunately. I can’t snap my fingers and magically make housing appear,” said Hallgate – though that would be nice, she added. Hallgate said the mission sees a lot of people like Ron. Some are homeless. Others aren’t, but are in extreme poverty. The mission offers community meals, programs for single parents and tit operates as an extreme weather shelter in the winter. The list of services goes on and on.
JONQUIL HALLGATE/
“When you come here and you meet people by name and you hear their story, you see them entirely differently.”
Hallgate went on to tell me about some of the programs that are available to people like Ron. She first mentioned the Homelessness Intervention Project. This project was turned into a program that the government co-ordinates. “The ministry staff in Surrey engaged people like the Surrey Urban Mission, the Front Room, places that are working directly grassroots with the folks.” They developed a co-ordinated approach to get people into housing in a fast timeframe. They wiped out the barriers that existed previously for people trying to get income assistance. And this program provides support to keep people in housing once they obtain it. Ron could connect with one of the agencies that are involved, she said. He would probably be a candidate for this program. She said there’s a number or organizations that could help him find a job. The Newton Advocacy Group, she explained, has a program called Project Comeback that helps people get a job and obtain housing. “And if he’s not a candidate for that, they would refer him somewhere else that could assist him. And that’s what’s neat about the collaboration between programs. “I can’t do a lot of things, but I can send people to other places to receive the help they need.” Hallgate said everybody who comes through her doors has a story. “When you come here and you meet people by name and you hear their story, you see them entirely differently.” I couldn’t have said it better myself, Hallgate. So my workday is ending and I have yet to hear if Ron has landed himself a job, or how his housing search is going. So Ron, give me a call and tell us all how you’re doing. Amy Reid is a freelance reporter with the Now newspaper.

❚ NEWS ❚FUNDRAISERS/Annual golf tournament for Tiny Bundles program
The ‘Now’ invites golfers to tee off and help feed Surrey’s children ment was, “bar none,” the best fundraising event that had ever been put on for the organization. The Tiny Bundles program provides babies with formula, food, diapers and other essentials. And the program allows its users to receive assistance every week, as opposed to every two weeks like other Surrey Food Bank customers. Tiny Bundles helps about 180 families every week. It’s a program that means a lot to the Surrey Food Bank, said Tiffany Parton, manager of resources and development for the organization.
“We want to make sure that children have the best nutrition possible and this program makes that possible: Healthy development for kids under one and their moms, of course. “Tiny Bundles is a big deal for us and for something to be supporting it, we’re just really excited about it,” said Parton. “The program is possible with the support of generous people, people like the Now. It’s going to be a great day. We’re thrilled about it.” This year, the Now hopes to surpass what was raised last year. Arlie McClurg, general sales
manager and director of business development for the Now, said Tiny Bundles is a foundation for the community. “It’s about the babies, it’s about food. Without food, you’ve got nothing. That’s got to come first,” McClurg said. “We want to make sure we take care of our own.” McClurg said that the Now is very community oriented. “We really believe in giving to local charity. The government isn’t funding like it used to, as we all know.” She said it’s vital to keep char-
itable funding within our city. “We’ve got to give to local charities. Our concern is that there’s so much money going out of the city right now.” McClurg sends thanks to two of the tourney’s major sponsors: Royal Bank of Canada and Bill’s Development. “Both of them, really, have been so supportive of our charitable endeavours over the last couple of years.” The Now invites everyone to get involved and help raise money for this cause. BOIL WATER ADVISORY (BWA) REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR WHITE ROCK & SOME SOUTH SURREY RESIDENTS Update: Monday, August 30, 2010 The Boil Water Advisory (BWA) remains in effect until further notice. As a public health precaution, EPCOR and the Fraser Health Authority are advising residents in the City of White Rock and those affected customers in South Surrey to continue to boil their drinking water for at least one minute before drinking. EPCOR appreciates the patience and understanding of White Rock and South Surrey residents as we continue working as swiftly and thoroughly as possible to restore the safety of your water. We continue to work closely with Fraser Health Authority and the City of White Rock through this process. Intensive sampling has detected no E. coli in water from the Merklin Low reservoir since it was cleaned, disinfected and brought back into service Wednesday, Aug 25. Sampling and testing the water throughout the system continues. EPCOR crews continue flushing, cleaning and inspecting the system using water from the disinfected Merklin Low Reservoir. Water used for flushing is slightly chlorinated. Chlorine will dissipate as it passes through the system, but customers can expect water discolouration as well as the potential for noticeable particles. Also in this case, a slight chlorine odour may be present. These are aesthetic issues, not health concerns. Boiling will ensure your water is safe to use and remove any chlorine odour. To facilitate the system flush, EPCOR asks that residents please reduce their outdoor water use. The health authority advises that there were no reports of illnesses related to water quality when the boil water notice was issued. There has also been nothing since then to suggest an outbreak of illness due to this event.

❚ NEWS ❚WHITE ROCK
‘Lots of clues’ as to what caused E. coli
NDP Leader Carole James, in front of a backdrop of portables at Surrey’s new Panarama Ridge Secondary School, speaks to reporters about the problems in the public school system on Monday morning. ❚PHOTO/Sharon Doucette
Portables too familiar a sight in Surrey: James continued from page 1 Walters said the government seems to always be a step behind when it comes to planning. “They’re looking at what’s here, not what’s to come.” As a result, she feels she’s “really getting ripped off” as a taxpayer. “She (her daughter) should be inside that school having access to good tools.”
James said parents are “stressed,” teachers are worried about having sufficient resources, and support workers are worried for their jobs under what she characterized as Liberal government “chaos.” “They’re not paying attention to the fundamentals and basics in British Columbia,” she charged. Every portable built is funded through the district’s operating budget, she noted, resulting in “less
librarians, less counsellors, less support for students with special needs.” Asked if she thinks, considering funding shortfalls, that it was timely for the government to introduce all-day kindergarten, James replied the concept is “good idea,” but it shouldn’t be done without providing enough resources for the children. “It shows economic incompetence,” she said. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com
White Rock’s water boil advisory Tom ZYTARUK is still on. That was the word from Staff Reporter EPCOR at press time Monday afternoon as the city’s water company continued to flush and disinfect the distribution system, which provides about 20,000 White Rock residents and 80 South Surrey households with water. The advisory has been on since Aug. 20, when a low level of E. coli was found during routine monthly testing. The Fraser Health Authority requires three negative results in a row before it will lift the advisory. In the meantime, folks on the White Rock water system are instructed to bring their water to a rapid rolling boil for at least one minute before drinking it, preparing baby formula or making juice, cooking, brushing teeth, washing raw food or making ice. At press time, EPCOR spokesman Tim le Riche said authorities had yet to identify the source of the contamination, despite news reports that pigeon poop might be to blame. Le Riche noted that last week a lab technician spotted yeast “that can be associated to pigeons,” but added “it’s just another clue. We have lots of clues – that’s one of them. We’ll keep chasing it until we find the source.” While the system continues to be flushed, cleaned and inspected, EPCOR advises White Rock’s residents used to drinking non-chlorinated water drawn from the Sunnyside Uplands aquifer that the water used for flushing is slightly chlorinated. While the chlorine dissipates as it passes through the system, residents can expect some discoloration and some particles. These don’t pose a health concern, EPCOR said. There have still been no reports of illness recorded by the FHA as a result of the contamination.

Police urge use of lifejackets after fisherman’s body pulled out of Fraser River CHILLIWACK – A North Delta fisherman’s body was pulled out of the Fraser River near Mission Thursday, two days after he fell into the river near Old Orchard Road in Chilliwack.
Police, search-and-rescue workers and fellow fishermen searched for Randy Garrecht, 33, after he slipped off some rocks into the swift current shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this difficult time,” said Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop, of the Chilliwack RCMP. Garrecht had been fishing with a friend who jumped in after him
to try to save him, but had to be pulled from the water himself by a nearby boater. The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the drowning. “This is a tragic reminder to be
safe when on, or near, the water,” Dunlop said. “Life jackets should be worn at all times when on a boat or standing on the river’s edge near deep or swift water.” – Tom Zytaruk

address the issue. In an interview this week, Sylvia Bishop said many people in North Delta have expressed concerns about traffic volumes in their neighbourhoods. Amy Ghuman Sara said people she has spoken to tell her that, politically, the council has no unity. From the actions of the council candidates, so far, there’s also been a lack of professionalism, she said. “For example, signs are being disrespected of fellow candidates. That’s not how you run a campaign in my book; however it seems to be for other candidates. If these candidates don’t respect fellow candidates’ signs right now, what will they do in office if they should happen to get in?” she asked. The last byelection for a Delta council seat occurred in 1987. The voters list that year had over 44,500 names, but Doug Husband needed only 4,600 (54 per cent of the vote) to win the vacant seat.

to the spawning beds have come as a remarkable surprise – and a remarkably pleasant one, at that. The past few years saw such a dramatic decline in sockeye numbers that, until this summer, there was much hand-wringing and gnashing of teeth over the fishery’s apparent collapse and the species’ imminent demise. It has come as a monumental surprise that, after the salmon run last year was so tenuous that the commercial fishery was never opened, this year’s run is the strongest since 1913. Not so surprising was the reaction to the surprisingly good news: joyous cries, from fishers to economists and anyone else who might make a buck off the unexpected bounty, calling for the capture

Perhaps next year we will all be surprised again when the watchers proclaim, “There are no fish in the river.” We must not lose sight of the fact that the millions of salmon waiting for a rainy day to speed them on their way up to their spawning beds are in no way a confirmation of humanity’s stewardship of the environment, but
rather are a testament to Mother Nature’s ability to overcome – at least this time – the adversity that humanity has created. Bob Groeneveld is editor of the Langley Advance, a sister paper to the Now.

University beckons, a mom reflects The date on the calendar reminds me that the time is drawing near for my child to leave for university. I have dreaded Karly these days for PAUL-MORRIS years. It is time for my child to leave our home and begin a life of his own. I worry he is somehow too young to move away and I question life’s so called “natural progression.” I had a life, got married and had two children. I think of the first five years of each of their lives as a complete blur. Night after night of non-sleeping and if I’m not mistaken, I’ve come full circle. The elementary school years flew by with PAC meetings, cross country races and sleepovers with old and new friends. The high school years accelerated in lightning speed with the grand finale of dancing with my son at the grad dinner/dance. My son and I will soon be standing together at a fork in the road. The Editor, Re: “Time for us to tell Harper he can’t get away with it,” the Now letters, Aug. 24. Trust the Liberals with our taxpayers’ dollars? Please, Ms. Petrala, account for this former government’s disappearance of hundreds of millions of public money in the sponsorship scandal, the “lost” $1 billion in the HRDC scandal, the utter mismanagement of the gun registry, ballooning from $70 million to $1 billion, and last but not least, the 25-plus scandals we Canadians endured, from Shawinigate to Adscam? And what, Ms. Petrala, is your basis that Harper wants women out of the labour force so to be at home with their kids? Because Canadian families now receive thousands of dollars in tax breaks so mothers and fathers alike have options? And the slam on “evangelical values” – meaning what, the “Golden Rule?” Family first? Accountability, honesty and integrity? Those are values all Canadian families share, be they Sikh, Muslim, agnostic, atheist or otherwise. Why view such values with disdain, Ms. Petrala? The Liberal legacy is clearly defined by laxity and squandering of taxpayers’ dollars with a nauseating tolerance for corruption. As a working medical professional, taxpayer and mother of two young children, I support Harper largely due to this Conservative government’s accountability with our taxpayers’ dollars. And plan not to be conned by the Liberals again.

my son to walk alone. He doesn’t appear to be afraid so logic tells me, why should I? How have the years gone by so quickly? I’m reminded of the play, Our Town where the young girl watches in dismay at her family’s existence in a day of their ordinary lives. She cries out, “Take me back, take me back! Please give me one more day (and 18 years) to live again.” How could I have allowed all these years to slip through my fingers without fully appreciating my life with my child? There will no longer be weekend nights of wondering what time my child will be coming home. There will no longer be quick errands that can’t possibly wait till the next morning. I won’t miss the gas tank in the car registering empty and waiting for me to fill it or feeling guilty when asking to borrow my own car. I won’t miss rinsing the dirty dishes and putting them into the dish washer. (I don’t know how many times I’ve reminded him, more than I care to remember.) I will no longer need to push the den coffee table back into place
after he has used it for a meal. I won’t miss seeing the scattered clothes on his bedroom floor waiting for me to pick up and wash (Lord knows I made a big mistake on this one) or notice his bed that hasn’t been made for years, (OK, so I made up for it here). I won’t miss hurrying to take a shower so he wouldn’t be late for school or waiting till the bathroom is free while he does who knows what in there. I won’t miss waking up in the middle of the night wondering if the sound of the back door opening was only my imagination. And maybe if I remind myself of all these things I won’t miss, I’ll be able to convince myself that this is nature’s way. He has grown up right before my eyes and I am truly proud of him. And so my dear child, I will miss you. I will miss you more than you will ever know. It is said that there is no stronger love than between a mother and her child. You have taught me well and I can only hope that you have learned from me. Your wings are set for flight. Soar high my child, with love...

As you may already know, a real estate developer is proposing an industrial compost plant at 176th St (Hwy 15) and 12th Ave. There are currently 2 lots for sale at this site, one 12 acres and the other 13 acres. The developer is also proposing to lease the adjoining 266 acre farm, which surrounds Halls Prairie Elementary School. All 3 properties are currently in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The purpose of this lease is to distribute some of the compost material on the farm and sell the remaining material to conform to Agricultural Land Commission guidelines. Currently, Pilot Grove Farms does not operate a farm or compost plant of this nature. This 266 acre parcel, bordered by 12th Ave, 184th St, 8th Ave and 176th St. has a least 3 known Class A (red coded) salmon bearing creeks: Sam Hill Creek, Campbell River Creek and Twin Creeks. The developer has applied to the City of Surrey to rezone the 25 acres from A-1 (general agriculture zone) to CD (comprehensive development zone). For a number of unknown reasons, the City of Surrey is supporting this application. The City commissioned a “ peer review “ which stated at the July 26th council meeting; “council refer this application back to staff to work with the applicant to find an alternative site for this proposed commercial composting facility, preferably in an industrial area”. The City of Surrey has referred the application back to the ALC to make a decision on this application. A decision will be made soon.

“Virtually everything in here is donated, including the fridge that just broke down,” said Derek Lucas, founder and director of REC For Kids, as he toured the Now through the group’s warehouse. A few local agencies, including Options, Sources, Surrey RCMP and the school board, act as filters to find suitable clients and direct them to REC For Kids.
“There’s nothing quite like seeing a kid’s face when they get something from here, especially a bike,” Lucas said. “It’s pretty special.” One child celebrating his birthday insisted that his party guests bring new sports gear to donate to REC For Kids, Lucas said with a smile. “We love to hear those stories,” he said. When kids show up at the group’s warehouse space to collect merchandise, the message is made clear that it’s a “hand up” to them, not a hand out, Lucas said. The group does not respond to requests for bulk equipment for charitable purposes, dealing only with pre-screened individuals, he added. “We’re in growth mode, and the word is spreading,” Lucas noted. The former rec room of the REC For Kids warehouse is fitted with bike-repair benches and stocked with cardboard boxes filled with carrier racks, kickstands, bells, training wheels and other accessories. The designated workshop days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with small groups of people playing their part in a social event. “We’d like it to be busy in here every day with working volunteers,” Lucas said. “We could fall behind on bikes if we’re not careful.” For more details or to get involved, call 604-598-0322 or visit www.recforkids.com. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

SURREY — Wanted: Tom ZILLICH experienced bike-repair Staff Reporter technicians with time to help a Newton-based charity wheel out more bikes for kids in need. Last February, a city-owned house near Unwin Park was retrofitted to suit REC For Kids, a non-profit group that works to donate reconditioned bikes and sports gear to children in Surrey and neighbouring communities. Dozens of bicycles have been repaired and given to children over the past several months, as part of the society’s mandate to give kids a chance to become more active and healthier. From January to mid-August, 164 children have been assisted by the group of volunteers, many of whom spend time in a basement workshop lined with donated bikes that have seen better days. The trouble is, a bike tech who worked with the Rotary Club-led group has moved to Vancouver, leaving the group without. “We have a garage full of bikes and a list of kids that need them, but the bikes need some repair to make them safe before we can give them out,” said Jean Buchanan, executive director of REC For Kids. “As a new charity, we have no money to pay repair people, hence we need volunteers.” The third-year group, which was housed at a building in Whalley before moving

“Delta Gurls” lipsynch the latest Katy Perry hit song for the camera at Creativ Music Centre during a Video Pop Star birthday party. ❚PHOTO/Tom Zillich
‘Video star’ party a birthday hit Lip-synching ‘Delta Gurls’ have fun in studio during two-hour Creativ session What to do for a Tom ZILLICH memorable birthday party? Staff reporter With our daughter and her friends over the past 10 years, we’ve made an annual mid-summer trek to Splashdown water park in Tsawwassen — a great place for a party, to be sure, but this year we opted for something a little different, and musical. You see, I told our daughter about the studio at Expo 86, where people could sing and record hit songs of the day, either solo or with friends. “That sounds like fun,” she said. But I knew the studio no longer exists. So I went Google-ing and found a similar operation called Creativ Music Centre — located in North Vancouver but worth the three-bridge trip on a recent Friday evening. In addition to bookings for legit recording sessions by pro and amateur musicians and lessons, the stylish studio also stages Pop Star Birthday Parties. Since 2003, studio boss Jim Kwan and his Creativ crew have hosted close to 1,000 songrecording sessions for parties of various size and situation — birthdays, corporate events,
stags and stagettes, Christmas-time celebrations, pretty much anything. A more recent wrinkle are video lip-synching sessions, which we booked for our group of eight girls. Combined, the studio does an average four such parties each week at its 7,000-squarefoot space, located next to Lynn Creek and a park trail area. “The CD-recording sessions (called Pop Star parties) have been huge,” Kwan said, “but we found that over the years, kids would come here twice, three times having done the same thing, during a previous birthday party here. The (Video Pop Star party) was developed as something new.” The sessions have been booked by party people as far afield as Chilliwack, Kwan said. A limited number of songs are offered for CD-recording sessions, but the track selection for video parties is pretty much limitless. Our “Delta Gurls” group name was a play on “California Gurls,” the hit Katy Perry song chosen as their music video track. It all came together during a two-hour session. First, the Gurls spent 30 minutes learning some dance steps with Emily, a choreog-
rapher. Then some glam and glitter was added to each of their faces by makeup artist Asha. For the final hour, in a well-lit room with chroma green-screen background, Kwan and camera man Jamie directed the Gurls, given high-energy coaching for dance routines and group and solo lip-synching as short clips of the song played on a portable stereo. “C’mon, sing it, girls! Keep it moving!” instructed Kwan, who, when not working at Creativ, makes time to sub-in on keyboards with local jazz and funk bands. After the party, it took less than a week for a package of eight Video Pop Star DVDs to arrive in the mail, one for each of the Gurls. In years to come, the colourful video, complete with post-shoot interviews and outtakes, is sure to become a time-stamped memento of our pre-teen’s birthday party. At Creativ, the fee for Pop Star parties is $249, which includes up to eight guests ($10 for each additional guest). The Video Pop Star party is priced at $349, eight guests maximum. Three sleep outdoors for charity
SURREY — For at least three people here, it was a weekend designed for sleeping outside, high above a parking lot, to raise money for charity. At the Walmart store in South Surrey, Vince Astoria, a retired Border Services officer, settled in on scaffolding, vowing to sit from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon in a bid to raise money for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which in turn supports Special Olympics BC. The goal was to raise at least $7,000 over the weekend. Meanwhile, Tour de Valley riders Karen Cryer and Steve Dickinson attempted a similar trick on scissor lifts — Cryer outside the PriceSmart Foods store in Cloverdale and Dickinson in the South Point mall parking lot on 152nd Street in Surrey. The Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Cops for Cancer initiative includes the Tour de Valley event, one of four such tours in B.C. that follow a designated route for nines days, covering more than 800 kilometres each. Tour de Valley starts Sept. 23 at North Delta Secondary.

❚ LIVING ❚GETAWAYS IN B.C.
Killers, kayaks and toilet paper in Johnstone Strait were eager and enthusiastic. Cara’s hair is a wonderful halo of springy curls. Dan has the kind of keenness that looks like he’s ready to start up the Peace Corps, the kind of gosh-golly enthusiasm that has me wary. “What are you hoping to gain from this trip?” he asked. Allen was with his wife Cathy, a librarian in their small town. “Our friends told us we would either love this — or it’ll be the end of us,” he said. Nell, 59, unaware that she’d soon to be a one-match burn pioneer, told us she’s an elementary school nurse and introduced her husband Pat, an emergencyroom physician. “I don’t want to sound like…” she faded off, not quite finishing the thought, “but I thought it’s basically now or never.” John Ross, 64, fingered his salty red beard. He looks like a sailor from a distant sea. “I’m from Edmonton,” he said in a gravely voice. It seems John is a wayfarer of a different sort. He’s cycled across Canada and pedalled from Paris to Istanbul. Now? He’s ready to kayak. Less than 24 hours later, I sat on a bluff above the aptly named Mossy Cove. A bull kelp forest fanned out in the sparkling water
Paddling in the mist of Johnstone Straight, a 110-kilometre channel located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island. below. My husband Kevin leaned against a hemlock to read while our tent glowed with the last golden rays of the day. I breathed deep bellyfuls of salty air scented with hot sap and wrote in my journal about the seal and her pup we saw drifting through that morning’s fog in Telegraph Cove. I also remembered the eagle wheeling down, talons out, grabbing something silver from the sea before returning to its perch to shred it into sushi. I fell in love with our keener guides. They’re the real thing.
Plus, they cook like a dream. We were all enthusiastic for another reason. Johnstone Strait is renowned for rainy weather, which is why our daily diet of blue-bowled skies and bleedingsunsets was so special. Mornings started thick with fog, pushing its thick fingers into coves and leaving shaggy tendrils on rocks. One night in North Bay, I sat with a glass of pinot noir. The fog began blanketing the bay and I knew I would sleep again like the dead that night. Except Kevin and I woke
together. The sound was close, filling the tent. I zipped out, drawn toward the heavy blowhole exhalations. The moon illuminated the fog. I could see nothing but the glowing thickened air. But my ears were filled with the immense breathing of orcas, creatures that can weigh up to eight tons. Stories are what bind us. Shared experiences and the telling thereof goes back to the time of the clan and the cave. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the hydrophone Cara lowered in the sea so we could eavesdrop on killer whale gossip or if we’re silently absorbing the sunset, these moments connect us to the earth and to each other. I wish I had mastered the onematch burn but, alas, it took me several attempts to render my TP into black flakes. But that process helped slow time to a Zen-like pace. Huddling over a coffee can with a small flame, while Jesusrays pierce through the templecolumns of trees, tends to frame a newborn day in an entirely fresh way, all of it combining into a different kind of mastery. There were Colleen FRIESEN many skills Now contributor I thought I’d master on my recent kayaking trip in Johnstone Strait, but learning how to burn pee-soaked toilet paper hadn’t made that list. Sea Kayak Adventures (seakayakadventures.com) promised a wilderness experience extraordinaire, and they delivered; orcas, humpbacks, doll porpoises and eagles littered the landscape, the camp stove fare was gourmet and the guiding expert. I just hadn’t counted on the burn-your-TP-in-the-coffee-canroutine, though it did make for some interesting discussions. Like one night on the Compton Island Indian Reserve, as Nell Garvin, of Bellevue, Washington, sipped her glass of merlot. “I’m going to find an old coffee tin and tell my kids that I have mastered the art of the one-match burn. The key is poking it with a stick and holding it aloft.” Allen Early, 46, of Moore, South Carolina, shook his head. In a deadpan drawl, he replied, “Nah. My method’s better. I just light it before I use it.” The tour started in the basement of the Haida-Way Hotel in Port McNeill. Our new guides, Cara Andre and Dan Pichette,

Give gift of apple on first day back in school, bank suggests Give the gift of an apple and educate your kids about Canadian fruit growers. So says BMO Bank of Montreal, which has reaffirmed its long-standing support for Canadian farmers and for learning by encouraging s t u d e n t s to g ive their teacher a locally grown apple on the first day of school. According to BMO Economics, the apple industry provides $175 million in yearly income for Canadian fruit growers. The industry
grows more than 400 million kilograms of apples per year, and apples represent 20 per cent of Canadians’ fresh fruit consumption. For more than a century, the tradition of giving a shiny fresh apple to a teacher on the first day of school has symbolized our appreciation for teachers and the desire to start the year off right. Apples are Canadians’ most popular fresh fruit. On average, each year we consume 7.82 kilograms of apples per person. Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia are the largest apple-producing provinces in Canada, which is one of the top 25 apple exporting countries in the world.

The best thing denture wearers can do if their denture is more than 3 years old and it has not been looked at by a dental professional, is to call our office. I’d be happy to see you and give you some complimentary advice. Don’t wait until you feel like something is wrong - that’s how irreversible damage to the structure that supports the denture can occur, and that is exactly what we would like to prevent. Call us today for your complimentary consultation.

This is a very common question, and the answer depends on many things. If the dentures are worn in your pocket, they will probably last forever, however dentures are and were meant to be worn in the mouth.
The lymphatic system absorbs excess fluid from the body, which contains waste materials and white blood cells. Since this system is not under pressure, it can only move via exercise or muscle contraction. Lymph moves towards the heart where it empties into blood veins. The two largest lymph collection areas are just below the clavicles and a person will feel tenderness or swelling if the lymphatic system is congested. If the lymph remain congested for extended periods of time, serious health issues can arise, including infections and various forms of cancer. The lymphatic system can be stimulated and cleansed through Colon Hydrotherapy, Live Blood Analysis, an alkaline diet, massage, acupuncture and exercise. There are also herbs known to aid lymphatic purification. In acute cases, Acupoint injections using homeopathic remedies will help break-up lymph congestion and eliminate toxins from the body.

❚JUNIOR FOOTBALL
Rams don’t measure up to defending champs The South Michael BOOTH Surrey Big Sports Editor Kahuna Rams got a chance to measure their progress at the midpoint of the B.C. Junior Football Conference season and the result was not positive. The young Rams took it on the chin 40-8 from the defending Canadian champion Vancouver Island Raiders at South Surrey Athletic Park Saturday afternoon. Surrey opened the season with a 37-13 loss to the Raiders in Nanaimo July 24 and, six weeks later, the gap has not narrowed. “They are as good a team as you are going to see,” said Rams coach Chris Butschler. “They are tight and they don’t make mistakes or take penalties. We made mistakes and we took penalties and it hurt us. Their quarterback is in his third year so he gets their system, they’re well coached and their offensive line is very good. They’re just a better team than us at this point in the season.” Compounding Surrey’s problem has been a roster that remains in a state of flux. Defensive co-ordi-
nator Cory Goff departed for the University of Manitoba on Aug. 15, prompting former head coach Tyler McLaren to assume the role with a new defensive scheme. Add to that a series of injuries undermining the offensive line plus new players arriving daily and the Rams roster is anything but settled. “With the new bodies coming in, the problem is we’re starting from scratch again,” Butschler said. “You only have 24 positions and when you bring in five new starters, that’s changing 20 per cent of your roster. They only practised with us for a week before the game so continuity is a huge factor. Not only that, we’re still trying to add a couple of guys to see if we can play with the Nanaimos and the Kelownas.” The Rams held their own in the early stages of Saturday’s game and only trailed 3-0 after one quarter. The second quarter was a disaster, however, as the Raiders erupted for 23 points to take a 26-3 lead into the half-time break. The Rams were their own worst enemies in the second frame as a fumbled punt return set up one
Raider TD and the offence sputtered with dropped passes and missed opportunities. “When our quarterbacks struggle, we struggle,” Butschler said. “We have to change our identity a bit, which means we’re going to have to run the ball better. We have to consistently go to our running game and maybe take some pressure off the quarterbacks. The problem is, we have such good receivers that it’s really hard to say that we don’t want to throw the football.” The Raiders coasted through the second half, adding one touchdown in each of the final two quarters to seal Surrey’s fate. Nick Boyd provided all of Surrey’s offensive points with field goals of 27 and 26 yards. The other Surrey points came on a third quarter safety conceded by the Raiders. The Rams’ running game was one of the few bright spots for Surrey as the home side out-rushed the visitors 161 yards to 149. Sean O’Neal rushed for 55 yards while quarterback Nate White scrambled for another 60 yards along the
ground. The running success came at the expense of the passing game as the Raiders connected for 371 yards and four touchdowns through the air. By comparison, the Rams accounted for just 71 yards passing with star receivers Nick Downey and Matt Chapdelaine combining for three receptions and 57 yards. The Raiders finished the game with almost 500 yards in offense but Butschler was quick to deflect blame away from the Rams defenders. “We short-fielded our defence twice in the second quarter so you can’t blame the defence for that,” he said. “We didn’t control the ball very well on offense and when you do that, you put extra pressure on your defence.” Kyle Ouwehand led the Surrey defenders with six tackles, two assists and one sack. Chris Mulangu also recorded a sack while Nick Felicella, Belah Small and Michael Mawusi each came up with one interception. The Rams are idle this week before returning to action Sept. 12 in Kamloops against the Broncos.

Phil Reimer’s
Coach likes what he sees in Eagles golf report
The Surrey Michael BOOTH Eagles got their Sports Editor first taste of game action with a win on home ice and two close road losses in B.C. Hockey League preseason action last weekend. The Eagles topped the Langley Chiefs 3-1 at South Surrey Arena Friday night before falling 1-0 in the return match Saturday in Langley. The Eagles then closed out the weekend with a 4-2 loss to the Express in Coquitlam Sunday. “For the most part we played pretty well in all three games,” Eagles coach Matt Erhart said. “There was maybe a lack of finish in a couple of games — probably all three actually — and that led to the two losses. There were lots of good things in all three games, especially in five-on-five situations. We had lots of shots in all three games and came away with five goals.”
Erhart has elected to give each player two exhibition games to show the coaches what he can do. The Eagles cut their training camp roster to 30 players after the weekend with more decisions to be made after the final exhibition game Wednesday against Coquitlam (7 p.m. at South Surrey Arena). “There isn’t a whole lot of chemistry out there because we have guys coming in and out of the lineup,” Erhart conceded. “We’re mainly stressing work ethic and looking for the guys who are willing to compete and battle in all three zones. We haven’t really gotten into too much detail on things like systems yet so we just wanted to see what the kids were able to do.” In the first game against Langley, the Eagles veterans accounted for all of the scoring with goals coming from Brad McGowan, Richard Vanderhoek
and Matt Mazzarolo. After being shutout in Langley Saturday, rookies Jeff Vanderlugt and Daniel Gentzler provided the goals in the 4-2 loss to Coquitlam Sunday. With just four days of training camp under their belts before the first exhibition game, there was not a lot of polish shown by any of the teams. Five of the six goals allowed came with the Eagles playing shorthanded, a situation that should be corrected once the final cuts are made and the team begins work on systems play. “It’s safe to say we’re working on our penalty kill this week,” Erhart said with a laugh. “It’s early yet and we haven’t even worked on that or established any units yet. It was just a situation where whoever was next in line went out. We got to see what certain kids could bring to us in different roles so it was good for evaluation purposes.”
❚GOLF
Teen to represent Canada in Florida
If that’s the criteria, I defy the PGA to explain the scoring system for the FedEx cup that is now underway, having just completed its first of four tournaments to determine a winner. People are jumping up and down the scoreboard all day long, gaining or losing points. Only the top 100 get to play this week and it goes down till you get the top 40 in the final week. This tournament was set up for one reason: provide some excitement for golf to take away from the NFL, which was crushing golf in the ratings once the season was underway. So PGA, let’s modify the system. Let’s make it easy to understand and let’s up the number to include the major winners. Here is a system that if a major winner is not a member of the PGA, he cannot play in the finals. So, these players who won golf’s top prizes – Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen, and Martin Kaymer – are left out in the cold. With Tiger and Phil out of the scene, it’s kind of nice to see some young people battling in these tournaments. Matt Kuchar had a great year money wise, he just hadn’t won a tournament. He took care of that on Sunday with a playoff win over Martin Laird. The young guys are winning, they’re not afraid of the veterans anymore and that includes Tiger. Good news for the tour? Not when it comes to ratings. Regardless of how good these young guns are, Tiger is still it for the casual golf fan and if he isn’t doing well they are not watching. Chip Shots Why Colin Montgomerie the captain of the European Ryder Cup team chooses his captain’s picks right in the middle of a golf tournament is beyond me. A bit selfcentred I would guess.

Adam Svensson will make one last golf trip before heading back to school for his Grade 11 year at Earl Marriott Secondary. Svensson, who won six consecutive junior and juvenile tourneys this summer, will wrap up his season by representing Canada at the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville, Florida beginning Thursday (Sept. 2). The Junior Players Championship features the top-ranked junior golfer from 15 countries plus the best youth talent from each U.S. state. Svensson has participated in several international tourneys as part of Canadian contingents but this is the first time he will be the lone entrant representing the Home and Native Land. “I’ve never been the only guy representing Canada in a tournament so that’s different,” he said. “I’m not nervous though — not too much. I’ve had a couple of weeks off now and I’m relaxed. I’ve got more experience this year so I know what it’s like to play in big tournaments like this. I hope to just go in there and do my best and see what happens.” Svensson last saw action Aug. 7 at the Canadian Men’s Amateur event in London, Ontario.
I had a boss once who said if you do not have the ability to explain your idea in one page, don’t bother bringing it in.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Say “scrap yard” and some people conjure up images of crushed cars, and piles of parts left alone to rust with little concern for the environment, but nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that scrap yards are better known as automotive recyclers, and that’s exactly what they do – recycle. Recyclers that are members of the Automotive Recyclers of Canada are committed to maintaining the highest standards of environmental stewardship when recycling vehicles. As the majority of an average car’s content by weight can be recycled and hazardous liquids can be disposed of safely, recyclers take the necessary steps to ensure that cars are permanently retired so they don’t pollute again, and that cars are recycled in the most environmentally responsible way possible.
❚ Stage 1 — Pre-treatment: drainage of operating fluids. All fluids are drained and stored for re-use or recycling. Special equipment and methods are used in order to prevent any groundwater contamination. Did you know? – An average of 40 litres of fluids are removed from each vehicle and are used, re-used or responsibly disposed of. ❚ Stage 2 — Parts re-use: dismantling of parts and components. Parts that do not contribute to that car’s emissions are removed,

inspected and readied for resale or recycling. Parts related to the engine or transmission are never reused, as they were creating the smog in the first place. Did you know? – After testing, batteries that are in good condition are sold to customers for re-use. Others are sent to a licensed recycling facility to be rebuilt. ❚ Stage 3 — Recycling of materials The unusable portion of the vehicle is crushed and sent to be shredded for recovery. Any valuable metals are separated and reused to make new cars and other consumer products, reducing the demand for raw materials. Did you know? – Seventy-five per cent of an average car’s content by weight can be recycled. If you want to ensure that your car is permanently retired and responsibly recycled, participate in Retire Your Ride. The Automotive Recyclers of Canada and the government of Canada crafted a mandatory national code of practice for automotive recyclers participating in the program that ensures recyclers have the most relevant information and tools necessary to prevent hazardous materials contained in end-of-life vehicles from contaminating our water, soil and air. For many drivers, vehicles are a large investment worth protecting. Yet according to a recent Angus Reid survey, one in four Canadians don’t always keep up with the recommended maintenance schedule for their vehicles. And over half aren’t taking any proactive measures to prevent the build-up of carbon deposits on their engine – a major factor in the efficiency of your engine’s performance. A big part of engine maintenance is getting into the habit of selecting the right type of gasoline for your vehicle. Survey results show one in three Canadians don’t bother to seek out the correct grade of fuel as recommended by their vehicle’s manufacturer, and that can impact the health of your engine in the long run. Choosing a gasoline for your vehicle is like choosing a meal for your body — healthy habits can make a difference. That starts with using a high-quality gasoline that meets Top Tier detergent gasoline standards. Fortunately, preventing the build-up of performance-robbing carbon deposits, called “engine gunk,” is also easy. For example, all Shell gasolines contain a nitrogen enriched cleaning system designed to protect your engine. And don’t forget to check that you’re using the correct octane level. Information may be found in your vehicle owner’s manual or right on the fuel cap. The correct octane level can help prevent engine knocking, which causes your vehicle to shudder and lose performance. To keep overall costs down, preventative maintenance today can mean the difference between costly repairs later.
