Rockin’ in God’s name in Cloverdale Rain doesn’t deter close to 8,000 fans from hearing Christian bands at ‘Rock the River’ gig Sex, drugs and alcohol Amanda OYE were missing from the Rock Now contributor the River Concert, held at Millennium Park in Cloverdale on Saturday — and the crowd didn’t seem to mind. Thousands of people turned up to watch Christian rock bands at the day-long event. The bands included The Almost, who performed a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” during its set. At one point, the grounds held 7,970 people, despite the rain, according to Rod Barnett, the director of the concert. “Considering the weather, the turnout was great,” he said. “We saw people come to faith with Jesus Christ.” One of the main purposes of the concert was to reach out to the under-21 generation — and organizers achieved that, Barnett said. Many of the teenagers at the concert had already been reached, though. Rachel Van Vliet, 14, goes to public school in Langley and has attended church on a regular basis her whole life. She has friends who are Christian, and others who are not. “It’s always good to have non-Christian friends, too... so you can bring them to God,” she said. She isn’t dating now, and won’t for a few years because she sees herself as being too young. But when she does, she will not date anyone who doesn’t have the same belief system she does. She doesn’t believe in sex before marriage, and does not believe that choice will have an impact on her future dating life. Her friend Jennifer Pham, 14, sees things a little differently. Pham went to church regularly for five years, but stopped recently because there wasn’t enough young people attending, and there were no activities to participate in. She isn’t dating yet either but, unlike Van Vliet, she is not sure whether she believes in sex before marriage or not. “Sometime it just happens,” she said. This is something that Peter Fortune, 16, is prepared for. He was in a 14-month relationship not long ago, and learned that next time he needs to set boundaries.

“I don’t want to loose my virginity and then not marry her,” he said. He had hid his relationship from his parents for 10 months, and did stupid things because of it. “I still have my virginity, though, so I wasn’t that stupid,” he said.
Fortune likes to hang out with people who are “like-minded.” He attended public school for six months when he was younger, but attends a Christian school in Surrey now. He was bullied at public school not because of his religious beliefs, but
because of his “weird obsessions,” he said. Bullying happens at private schools, too, Fortune said. There are a lot of nonbelievers who go to Christian schools because of the good educational opportunities, according to Fortune.

Mystery in Alaska has Surrey connection
Rain, rain go away (and it will)
People broke out their umbrellas for a soggy stroll along the beach in White Rock on Sunday. The good news is, weather more typical of August should return by Wednesday morning, with sunny skies forecast through the weekend. ❚PHOTO/Brian Howell
Surrey motorcyclist, 55, killed after riding off cliff A 55-year-old Surrey man died Sunday when he lost control of his motorcycle and went over an 800-foot cliff on the Hope-Princeton Highway. The man, who has not been named,
was part of a group of six motorcyclists travelling to Princeton when the accident occurred in an area known as the Skagit Bluffs. Police say the crash happened at 40 Corner, a tight bend in
the mountain road that is notorious for motorcycle accidents. The accident is under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to be involved.
Police in Juneau, Ted COLLEY Alaska are investigating Staff Reporter a mystery with a Surrey connection. Just before 2 a.m. last Friday morning, the phone rang in the Juneau PD dispatch room. On the line was Abby, who said she was 10 years old. A man I don’t know kidnapped me, the caller — who spoke with a British accent according to the JPD — told the dispatcher. I was drugged and left in a Juneau parking lot. I don’t know where I am. The call sparked a full-scale search effort by Juneau police officers who scoured their city looking for the young victim. She’d given a vague description of the area where she was abandoned and patrol cars checked all locations that even remotely resembled that description. Officers were sent to check hotels and taxi companies. They stopped people on the street hoping someone had seen the girl. The search turned up nothing, not a trace of Abby. Abby’s conversation was recorded, but no caller I.D. of location was displayed. The dispatcher asked Abby for her number, then instructed her to hang up and call 911 so she could be located. Abby hung up, but never called back. Juneau PD dialed the number they’d got from Abby, but only got voice mail. Here’s the twist: The number was traced to a Surrey business. “Late Friday afternoon there was a message left at that number,” said Juneau PD public information officer, Cindee BrownMills, Monday morning. “There has been no response.” She would not release the Surrey number or the name of the business associated with it, citing the ongoing investigation. Juneau police suspect the call might have been a prank, but they can’t be sure and that means they won’t stop looking for “Abby” — just in case. An investigator has been assigned to the file, Brown-Mills said. He’s checking everywhere he can think of, the school district, child services, everywhere. “We’re checking all our bases here,” Brown-Mills said. “If there is a little girl out there, we want to find her.” Things changed just a few hours later, however. When local police were asked about the Surrey connection, a source told the Now the number here “checked out” and Juneau was now taking a look at a second phone number in a different part of the Lower Mainland as the possible source of the “Abby” call. When the Now asked Brown-Mills to confirm that, her reply was a terse email. “I have given you as much information as I have available. Our detectives have exhausted all leads in this case and, pending any further information, have decided to close it.” So the mystery of “Abby” remains unsolved.

DELTA - Steve Fonyo is in trouble again after Delta police charged him with credit card fraud. It’s alleged Fonyo, 45, used a fake gas card on three occasions to buy fuel from a North Delta gas station. He was arrested without incident at his Surrey home and appeared in Surrey provincial court. Delta police say an ongoing
investigation has uncovered a number of suspects have used plastic cards encoded with cloned or counterfeit gas card data to steal more than $60,000 in fuel from a local gas station between September 2009 and July 2010. The investigation has resulted in fraud related charges against “numerous” people. Fonyo rose to prominence in 1984 when he ran across Canada
to raise $13 million for cancer research, a journey inspired by Terry Fox. The one-legged runner was just 19 at the time. Fonyo was awarded the Order of Canada for his effort, but had it taken away after falling into a life of drug addiction and crime. Fonyo plans to marry his fiancée, Lisa Greenwood, Aug. 28 on a Victoria beach named for him.

Tandem-bike couple roll out on ride for disaster-relief agency Huw and Dave WILLIS Carolyn Thomas Postmedia News Service plan to spend a year cycling 16,000 kilometres (10,000 miles) on a tandem bike to fundraise for ShelterBox, a disaster relief charity. They’re looking to stop along the way and give talks to Rotary clubs, schools, scout groups and community organizations, “hopefully inspiring them with what we’ve done and encouraging them to do something for the charity,” said Huw. They were due to leave Saturday from the Vancouver Art Gallery and plan to spend just under a month cycling around B.C. before heading into Alberta, south into the U.S. and then on to New Zealand, Australia and Europe. They’re using one of the disaster relief organization’s boxes, normally filled with a tent and other emergency items, to carry their supplies on the trip. The pair from Cornwall, who both used to work for local newspapers back in England, has previous experience with ShelterBox. Huw did public relations work the charity while Carolyn was a member

of a ShelterBox response team that was deployed to Pakistan. For the last couple of years, they’ve been teaching English in Portugal. This won’t be their first big trip on a tandem bicycle. In 2004/05 they cycled about 9,600 kilometres (6,000
miles) around the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. Huw said they made a stop in Tsawwassen prior to starting their trek because local Rotary member Jennifer Kormendy is a ShelterBox response team member. The local Rotary club raised money for ShelterBox earlier this year to help with relief efforts in Haiti. Visit Huw and Carolyn’s blog at http://tandem10.wordpress.com for more on their trek.

TREES ARE THIRSTY TOO! Summer is upon us and the weather is warm, but the trees on your street and in your yards are suffering! Just as we get thirsty in hot dry weather, so do trees. Like us, they also need long refreshing drinks of water to replenish their fluids. Please help quench the thirst of your street trees and private property trees by following these guidelines: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Please water street trees and the trees in your yard twice a week. Water thoroughly at the base of the tree for a minimum of 15 minutes (or 20 litres). Water when it isn’t raining. Water during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and dusk). Water slowly so that the water has time to soak into the dry soil and reach the tree roots, rather than just running off the surface.

NORTH DELTA - Nearly $1,700 cash and a mountain of household goods were donated at a Delta Arts Council benefit concert Friday night for those burned out of the Ri-Don Apartments. Fire was discovered in the three-storey apartment building near Nordel Way and Scott Road around 6 a.m. on July 27. When it was all over and the flames knocked down, dozens of people were left homeless and with nothing but the clothes on their backs. A concert featuring local bands was quickly organized and staged at North Delta’s Firehall Centre for the Arts, 11489 84th Ave. The response was overwhelming. Hundreds showed up to groove to the tunes and share what they could with fire victims. So much was donated, the Firehall Centre and DeltAssist are having trouble coping with it all — anything unclaimed after Thursday will be donated to the Canadian Diabetes Society. Fire victims can drop by the centre from9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until then to get help. Call the Firehall Centre at 604-596-1025 for more information. — Ted Colley
Delta officer given award for bravery at scene of house fire
A Delta police officer received a federal award for bravery last week. Const. Cal Traversy was among
17 honoured by Governor General Michaelle Jean on Tuesday. Traversy was awarded a Medal of Bravery for rescuing his neighbours from their burning house in North Delta on Sept. 12, 2008. He had just completed his first day on the job with Delta police — he had transferred from Vancouver police department — and was off-duty at the time. Hearing the sound of breaking glass, Traversy looked out his window to see his neighbours’ sliding glass door explode as the house erupted in flames. Shouting to his wife to call 911, Traversy rushed over and pushed open the front door where he found a boy, the first of three people he would help out of the smoke-filled house. After making sure the youngster was in a safe place, the off-duty officer ran back into the house and, despite experiencing extreme breathing difficulties, escorted two family members from the second floor to safety. He went back in a third time and, unable to return to the second floor, yelled to the daughter still trapped there to escape through the window where he was waiting to catch her. Then, with a jacket wrapped around his face, Traversy went back into the house a final time to make sure everyone was out. This is not the first award Traversy has received for his actions that night. In 2009, he received a Medal of Valour from the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Attorney General as well as a Chief Constable Award from the Delta police department.

Dome rebuild numbers don’t add up for Liberals InTheHouse

now
For a government that is in serious trouble when it comes to credibility and trust, it’s odd for the Keith B.C. Liberals BALDREY to continue to make nonsensical claims about their economic competence. I’m referring to last week’s boast that the new roof for BC Place stadium is “on time and on budget.” For sheer gall, I suppose that claim is in some way impressive. But it doesn’t ring true when compared to the history of that controversial project, where costs have ballooned and the schedule for getting a new roof kept changing for years. For a long time, the B.C. Liberals denied there was any need for a new roof. The government dismissed a 2006 engineering report that said the original roof needed replacement. Then, a year later, a giant hole was blown in the roof and it began to leak regularly. It was agreed a new roof was needed and in 2008 it was announced a new retractable roof would be installed. Less than a year later, Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger said the whole project was delayed because it was proving more complex than originally thought. But not only has the timeline wobbled back and forth over the years, so has the budget, which has climbed an astronomical 58 per cent in a little more than a year. The first estimate from the government was $365 million. Then, a few months after the last election, the new number was $458 million. (Gee, what do you know, another big number revision announced only after everyone voted!)
But Krueger then admitted that when you included all associated costs, the true budget was $563 million. But wait — he forgot about the $14-million cost for the temporary stadium at the old Empire Stadium site. So, everything in, and the final tally is $577 million, which is $208 million over the original estimate (an estimate based on actual business plan, according to the B.C. Liberals). On top of all this, no firm date can be given for when the darn stadium will re-open for business. The BC Lions had been told they’d only have to spend one year in the temporary facility (although, by most accounts, it’s a lot nicer place to watch the Leos than the concrete bowl of B.C. Place stadium). The only commitment has been that the stadium will be ready to host the 2011 Grey Cup game, which occurs in November. So, this is all “on time” and “on budget?” The B.C. Liberals have for years dined out on the supposed fiscal incompetence of the NDP government in the 1990s. They love to talk about the “dismal
decade” and such things as the fast ferries fiasco as a way of perpetuating the idea that New Democrats cannot manage anything to do with economics. But when you start going through the list of cost overruns that have piled up on the B.C. Liberals’ watch, it’s hard to take seriously their boasts of being so much better on economic matters than New Democrats. Aside from the BC Place roof overrun, there are such things as the new Vancouver Convention Centre, which cost almost $900 million — almost double the original estimate. The Port Mann Bridge project has ballooned from $600 million to $3.3 billion. It was also supposed to be a private-public partnership when it came to financing, but that fell through and the government is now on the hook for the entire amount. For years, the government has insisted the costs for the 2010 Olympics would be $600 million, and not a penny more. Last month, it finally admitted the tally was about $925 million — an overrun of more than 50 per cent. And let’s not forget last year’s
pre-election budget, which turned out to be the most inaccurate budget in B.C. history. The NDP was excoriated by the B.C. Liberals for its so-called “fudge-it budget” in the mid-1990s, but last year’s wildly inaccurate budget dwarfs the NDP’s record when it comes to missing the mark. Various polls continue to show voters give the B.C. Liberals more credibility than the NDP when it comes to the economy. Based on the track record of this government recently, it’s difficult to see why that continues to be the case. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C. KBaldrey@globaltv.com

Language used by Colley is insulting to Jesus The Editor, Re: “Broadcast journalism ain’t what it used to be,” Now opinion column written by Ted Colley, Aug. 6, 2010. It appears as if someone forgot to do what they are paid to do — that is, edit Ted Colley’s column. I am speaking of his use of the words “he’p me Jesus.” I know those words are swear words and not praise to my Blessed Saviour. I am saddened, insulted and upset that a man of Colley’s experience would have a lapse of sanity and write such disgusting words. The editors should also be ashamed. If Colley doesn’t appreciate Jesus Christ, then he should just keep his mouth shut. I always read his columns but this may be my last. I have lived for 77 years without Ted Colley, and I can do it without his stupidity for many years in the future. Do you get the message that I am angry, upset and astonished that a newspaper would allow such language by one of their writers? I will look for an apology in big bold type.

Ditch the oranges and just answer the questions
Re: “Hey border guards: I’m not a criminal, so treat me with dignity,” Now opinion column written by Harvinder Sandhu, Aug. 6, 2010. I have a suggestion for her: Take her husband’s advice. There are some good officers and some who like to show their power. Unfortunately, it has become not a matter of rights. At the border crossing, just answer the questions. Don’t volunteer information. Don’t try to exercise your rights. They can make real trouble for you. On this side, at least (same or worse on the other side), they can rip out your car seats and you will have to put them back in yourself. The American side is even more scary. Oranges are a no-no. Ditch them.

Perhaps we should live with more people to get ahead
Legalizing secondary suites in the city will probably increase the tax base, which will then help fund education and more schools. For these homes to pay for all the extra kids that need a school in the area. Surrey probably realizes it can’t control what is going on in these homes, so they may as well make some money from it On the other hand, since you can’t fight city hall, people need to learn family values. My dad told me when I was a kid, “You need to live five years like a pig” in order to get ahead in life. This means saving every penny, in any way you can. Here, we find three or four families all living in one home, sharing expenses and saving money. And they manage and prosper as a result. So instead of complaining, people should learn and think about maybe doing something similar to get ahead. On the other hand, I hate all the speculation going on in real estate because people are coming to pretend to buy homes just to
sell them for a profit, and banks are used to this behavior and cash in, so a house is not a home — and this is very, very wrong. You can’t talk about community unless people stay in their homes. People become gypsies, moving all the time. I think people should address this issue to the government that is supposed to work for the people. Freezing house prices would be a solution.

Where is customer service? Mom’sLife
Last Wednesday’s fiasco with the family of a 10-year-old disabled boy from Kamloops, whose custom-made wheelchair was damaged on an Air Canada flight, had a happy end- Kelley SCARSBROOK ing on Thursday. Air Canada was able to locate an all-night “fix it” shop and have the wheel chair back to the boy. However, the reason behind the quick turn was due largely to Twitter users, and the rest of the online world, who convinced the airline to fix his chair. It makes you think. What the heck has happened to customer service when something like a boy having his only mode of transportation destroyed is simply not enough for the airline to expedite the situation? Instead, it took thousands of Twitters and bloggers with their stern words to make the airline do the right thing. One tweet to PostmediaNews stated, “Air Canada, I would suggest you do something and fast. Just buy him a new $15,000 wheelchair because that’ll be a drop in the bucket compared to the bad PR and public backlash you’re going to get in about 15 minutes.” Which was essentially what happened. In the end, they did the right thing because everyone knows word of mouth is everything, especially in the social media world. So why is customer service at such a low today? How many companies, both

large and small, can you say provide excellent customer service? I bet it can be counted on one hand. A few weeks back, my husband and I took our son to search for a new bike. He was really excited and he couldn’t wait to try different ones out. However, in the bike shop we visited, it became visibly clear we weren’t really a priority. The people who worked there stood around, tried not to make eye contact with us and essentially made us feel like we were bothering them. At first I thought it was my imagination, but after 10 minutes of waiting for them to look our way, it was very apparent that serving customers was not their priority. My husband turned to me and shook his head. I was baffled. A reluctant individual eventually came over to help us with a few heavy sighs and an intermittent look at his watch while my son decided on his bike. We eventually purchased the bike, but were unhappy because we had simply resigned ourselves to receiving poor service. But as consumers, should we really resign ourselves to receiving bad customer service and be very surprised when we receive great service? A company of any size can no longer wait until an issue hits social media to react. Social media can pose a very large threat. Perhaps this may be the way back to better customer service. Perfect pulled pork
Memphis Blues makes mouth-watering meat dishes at two locations in Surrey Pulled pork, when made Amanda OYE right, melts in your mouth. Now contributor It is so tender. The Memphis Blues Barbeque restaurant at Grandview Corners in South Surrey serves close to a couple hundred pounds of pulled pork on an average day. It’s a similar story at the chain’s new Clayton Heights location. I went down to the restaurant one morning to learn how to make it. “You have girly hands,” George Siu, the owner and founder of the restaurant chain, said to me when I walked in. I wonder if this means I won’t be able to pull pork as well as someone with manhands. Siu showed me around the kitchen and explained what they do to cook the meat, a process that takes 14 hours but can be done at home in five. The pork they use has a surprising amount of fat on it. The idea is to render the fat through all of the meat, Siu said. A 14-pound piece of meat comes out as eight pounds. The pork is cooked with a dry rub on it in a
smoker with two chambers. The first chamber has apple wood in it, which creates smoke that is pushed through vents by fans into a smoke chamber, where the meat is cooked. At Memphis Blues, cooking of the meat is started around 8:30 p.m. the night before, so by the time I get there at 9:30 a.m. the next morning, the meat is ready to be pulled. To my surprise and delight, the meat just fell off the shoulder bone with little effort on my part. Girly hands are more than capable of pulling pork. Pulling pork was easier than I anticipated because the meat is not tough like pork usually is, but it was harder on my hands than I thought. I was wearing two pairs of gloves, and could still feel the heat making my hands sweat. When pulled pork is made at home, it should be left to sit for around 30 minutes before it is pulled. Once it has been pulled, the pork is ready to be served. To make it at home, one side of a propane barbecue should be turned to 300 degrees, while the other side is left off. Wood chips (such as apple or hickory) that have been soaked for 30 minutes go on the lit side of
the barbecue; the pork, wrapped in tinfoil with holes poked through, goes on the other. After around 30 minutes, the wood should be burned off and new chips added. This should be repeated three to four times. Next, the meat needs to be wrapped again in tin foil and put back on the barbecue for another hour or so, to steam and get all the flavours in. A three-pound piece of pork should take around five hours to cook, and feeds eight to nine people, Siu said. The time it is left to cook for will vary depending on the barbecue and the piece of meat. “The culture of barbecue, it’s about bringing people together,” said Siu. While waiting for the meat to cook, invite some people over, catch up and have a few drinks, he said. Memphis Blues Barbeque at Grandview Corners, operated by brothers Harv and Jag Basi, is located at #50-2443-161A St. In Clayton Heights, Memphis Blues is located at #302-18690 Fraser Hwy., at Hillcrest Village, and is operated by franchisees Shawn Toth and Paul Johnson. “You probably believe Colleen FRIESEN that you will always live Contributor within a democracy,” Lada Ptacek pauses, his index finger pushing at the bridge of his glasses. “I am here to tell you that you cannot assume this. Systems change. Regimes come. There is no guarantee of how it will be.” His English is studied as he tries to convey his truth to our group of American, Canadian and New Zealander cyclists. At 42, Ptacek is living proof that regimes change. He was 22 years old when he was beaten for his part in the Czech Republic’s 1989 Velvet Revolution. Communism died soon after. My husband and I are in Prague. It has only been a few days since we left Lada, after a week-long bicycle tour through the pastoral southern states of the Czech Republic. Moravia and Bohemia were full of calm country roads, quiet cities and very little traffic. I can still see Lada, standing in front of the rusty fence of the Iron Curtain, helping us imagine growing up within a barbedwire border. His words, and those images of small towns, keep coming back to me as we try to navigate through the swirl of Prague. Change is not a strong enough word for what has happened to this city in the 20 years since commercialism took over. The Charles Bridge, where army boots once marched, is now a throbbing mass of visitors and trinket stands. Puppets spill off kiosks and retail storefronts — a Prague art
form that has flourished since the 18th century. Bohemian crystal shops tempt tourists with their sparkles. If capitalism is the new religion, our home for the next four nights at the uberhip Buddha Bar Hotel would make a great church. Their brochure proclaims that it is “not just another hotel. It’s a lifestyle…” Entering the hotel feels like stepping into my very own life-sized jewelry box of intense red velvets, Asian silk brocades and Warhol-inspired Buddhas. The delicate scent of incense is everywhere. That night we dine in the Buddha Bar Restaurant. It is dark and glows with crimson crystal chandeliers. Selections of Tiger shrimp in a heady mixture of coconut and basil, five-spice barbequed chicken and Chinese spoons filled with a tart and spicy tuna tartar are delivered, each paired with a glass of France’s finest wine. The dinner is a crisp departure from the usual Czech fare of pork, potatoes and pivo (beer). A Buddha statue dominates one wall, his head at the mezzanine level of the open bar that looks down into the dining room. He sits, implacable and silent, in front of a wall studded with rows of orchids. Diners from Norway, Kuwait and Russia eat and drink and spend. The Buddha Bar is a lifestyle — for the rich. crowd can groove to the now-famous soundtracks. But Prague is the first time the concept has been extended from the bar/restaurant scene into the hotel business. No details have been missed, including the remote-controlled bidet, the electronic curtains and endless selections of edgy atmospheric music to choose from. Prague Castle, representing a very different economic time and sensibility, looms over the city from its hill across the Vltava River. Below, the Little Quarter, a neighbourhood of baroque architecture speaks of former riches. Renaissance, Art Nouveau, cubist and neoclassical buildings jumble together throughout the city. Ugly box-like towers are inserted here and there, a reminder of the aesthetic insensibilities of the communists. In the Jewish quarter, synagogues and museums are tes-
tament to the death of so many Jews. Like the Buddha, the buildings remain as stoic witnesses to the waves of occupation, terrorism, dominations and democracies. Tourists rush about, shopping and dining and believing that this is the way it is. But Lada and his fellow citizens keep a watchful eye. This is only how it is right now. ❚ THE LEGION CELEBRATES
The party is on in Whalley — 65 years after the end of Second World War Legion is one of more than 160 in B.C./ Yukon Command. In 1947 about 40 veterans gathered to start a local branch of the Canadian Legion in the Whalley area, at that time named after the Whalley family, who operated the local gas station and store in the area. The charter for the North Surrey Branch No. 229, Canadian Legion was received in January 1948. The founding members held their first meetings in local church basements and members’ garages. It wasn’t long before they began construction of a small community hall on Grosvenor Road through donated materials and labour. The Ladies Auxiliary, formed in same year, actively helped with fund raising. In 1951, the first Remembrance Service was held on the grounds of the Grosvenor Road School and, in 1952, a new cenotaph was erected on the traffic island at 108th Avenue and Pacific Highway. With the construction of King George Highway (now Boulevard), the cenotaph was moved to its current location for caretaking until a new city site is finalized. By 1960, continued growth and community work lead up to construction of the present building. Since that time, the Whalley branch has carried on its work in the community, becoming a gathering place for thousands of members over the years and a showcase for local entertainers. — with history from www.whalleylegion.org

A “street” party in Whalley this Saturday will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Aug. 14 event is designed to mirror the parties that erupted after Allied forces brought down the Axis in 1945. This Saturday is the anniversary of the date when victory was declared over Japan (VP Day), on Aug. 14, 1945. This weekend, live music, a beer garden and plenty of food are part of the festivities at the Royal Canadian Legion’s Whalley branch (#229), located at 13525 106th Avenue (Veterans Way) in North Surrey. ❚ THE LEGION CELEBRATES
Aug. 14 is V-J Day Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day, also known as Victory in the Pacific Day, or V-P Day) is a name chosen for the day on which the surrender of Japan occurred, effectively ending the Second World War and subsequent anniversaries of that event. The term has been applied to both the day on which the initial announcement of Japan’s surrender was made in the afternoon of Aug. 15, 1945 in Japan, to Aug. 14, 1945, when it
is observed as V-J Day in the United States (when it was announced because of time-zone differences in the Western Europe, the Americas, the Pacific Islands and Australia) and to Sept. 2, 1945, when the formal signing of the surrender was made. The name V-J Day had been selected by the Allies after they named V-E Day for the victory in Europe. A formal surrender ceremony was performed in Tokyo Bay, Japan aboard
the battleship USS Missouri on Sept. 2 1945. In Japan, the day usually is known as the “memorial day for the end of the war.” The official name for the day is “the day for mourning of war dead and praying for peace.” This official name was adopted in 1982 by an ordinance issued by the Japanese government. Elsewhere, the day is commemorated as Liberation Day in Korea and some other nations. Source: Wikipedia
On Aug. 15, 1945, American servicemen and women gather in front of “Rainbow Corner” Red Cross club in Paris to celebrate the unconditional surrender of the Japanese.

ily blueberry farm will not be a vendor at the market. Instead, he is contributing by donating blueberries for the pie-eating contest. Gill doesn’t set up booths because they are very busy on the farm, but he still thinks it is great for blueberry farmers to get out there in the community. While Gill will not be a vend-

Rams post first victory of the season in Victoria Head coach John Cardilicchia’s warnIan SHELTON ings proved prophetic as the Victoria Postmedia News Service Rebels suffered their first loss of the season Saturday at the hands of visiting South Surrey Rams. Earlier this week, Cardilicchia warned against taking the Rams lightly despite a rough start to the team’s season that left them with an 0-2 record when they arrived at Bear Mountain Stadium to take on the 2-and-0 Rebels. In a game marred by unending penalties, repeated turnovers and an offence that didn’t catch on until the dying minutes of the fourth quarter, the Rebels went down 35-17 to the visiting team. “I told the kids coming into this game, you win the turnovers, you win the game,” Cardilicchia said. “We didn’t help ourselves with the turnovers.” Cardilicchia also took a dim view of the 175 yards Victoria lost in penalties. “Obviously it’s something I need to jump on. Is it going to be an ongoing issues? Absolutely not,” he said. “I run them to death out here because of it.” The Rebels went behind four minutes into the game when Surrey quarterback Jon Ellingson launched a pass about 35 yards into the hands of Zach Middleton. Middleton then dodged a pair of Victoria defenders before running into the end zone to complete the 65-yard play. Up 7-3 in the second quarter, Surrey got to within one yard of the Victoria end zone but the Rebels’ defence stood tall in a goal line stand that brought the crowd back into the game. On the next play, running back Sam Adu broke out and ran the ball deep into Surrey’s end, and the fans started to make some noise. But the ensuing snap bounced from Victoria quarterback Nick Cobb’s hands, Surrey pounced on it, and the crowd simmered down. It was the pattern of the game for Victoria, who snatched the momentum for a play, only to lose it again. “It was a frustrating day,” said Cardilicchia. “We’d get a big play but we couldn’t get it together until the end.” A fourth-quarter rally stacked 14 points onto the Rebels’

Phil Reimer’s
golf report
Shocker. That the only word I can think of. I have lots more, but that will do. Yes I am talking about Tiger Woods over the past weekend, but something other than his score at the Bridgestone Invitational. Sure finishing second last in a tournament is a shocker for Tiger — unheard of, in fact. But my own personal shocker occurred on one of the holes when I actually watched Tiger give up. The words “give up” were not supposed to be in Tiger’s DNA. But there he was: in four shots, including a greenside bunker, not lining up the shots, not looking for the advantage, not checking where the ball is going to land. Just walking up to the ball hitting it and doing the same till he finished the hole. Golfers in Saturday morning leagues take more time.
score as the offense seemed to finally click but by then the game was decided. Both those touchdowns were carried in by Adu, who was one bright spot for the Rebels all day. The 5’7” running back bounced off, slipped past, and otherwise frustrated the Rams’ defense to the tune of 194 yards on 18 carries. Kicker Quinn Van Gylswyk also stepped up, nailing the coffin corner late in the second half with a ball that landed on the sideline, one yard from the Rams’ end zone. Surrey receiver Nick Downey punished him for the inbound balls, including one he ran about 80 yards for a touchdown. The game was the first half of a home-and-home series. The teams meet again Saturday in Surrey, and this time it’s Rams coach Chris Butschler sounding cautious. “These are two evenly matched teams,” he said. “Next week could be completely different.” — Victoria Times Colonist
FROM VANCOUVER
ON SELECT DATES
Someone mentioned in an interview or during the telecast that it is really difficult to come back from the depths once you have fallen that far. Lee Westwood recently brought his game back after falling into a pit, but let’s face it: Lee did not have that far to fall in comparison. I’ll let the real shrinks and the part-time mental hackers figure this one out but maybe, just maybe, Tiger, after being protected all his life from anything adverse, is finding it more difficult than most to handle his self-inflicted wounds. What they didn’t show on TV or acknowledge was some verbal jabbing he took from the crowd. If he makes it to the Ryder Cup this year just think what those Welsh people will do to him at Celtic Manor. This will not be a polite crowd. This is country against country and the insults will be bouncing off the scoreboards. As I wrote this, Tiger had not pulled out of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, a course that to some degree offers up, if the wind blows, a challenge that is not unlike the links courses of Europe. Maybe Tiger will give it one more shot and after that, well it could be his final game of the year. I had a friend who went through a divorce. His boss, an understanding type, said, “I can do two things: give you the summer off or add even more work to someone who is an A personality.” My friend chose the latter and that proved to be the therapy he needed. Tiger loves the game. Does he love it enough to grind his way back to the top? It might take more than a year. Chips Shots After this past weekend who is going to be talking about Hunter Mahan — the player who won the Bridgestone at Firestone, a tough golf course. (And he did it coming from behind — a great performance.) But this is like Stewart Cink winning the British Open last week when the world wanted Tom Watson, beloved by the British, to win and he lost out on 18. Who did everyone talk about? Tom Watson. Cink was hardly mentioned. I feel sorry for Cink and Mahan when they have to share the stage when it’s their win. ******************************************************************************* Where was Phil Mickleson? All he had to do was finish fourth or better and he would have been number one. But he shot over par. You don’t do that when the door has been opened. ******************************************************************************* Enough of all of that, as we have come here to heap praise on two young B.C. golfers.

What a weekend for two Surrey golfers. Adam Svensson did not win the Canadian Junior Golf Championship at Richmond, but did finish fourth and he won the Juvenile Division and is now off to the Canadian Amateur. What a run: BC Juniors, BC Amateur, an age-class win at a world junior tournament in California, and much more to come. The women were following his success. In the Canadian Junior Girls Championship Surrey’s Taylor Kim finished second and went on to win the Juvenile Championship.

Funeral Services
PRE-HST SAVINGS
EXTENDED
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) came into effect on July 1st, increasing the cost of funerals by 7%. In many cases, this amounts to an increase of $500 or more. While we assisted hundreds of families with their prearrangements prior to the July 1st deadline, many others were unable to complete their plans before the HST became effective.
We’re happy to announce that First Memorial Services Fraser Heights Chapel is extending the pre-HST savings – but only for a limited time. By planning ahead you will: • Relieve your family of the emotional and financial burden an unplanned funeral can cause • Prevent emotional overspending • Lock in prices at today’s rates

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Dog Days The Patriot that’s of Summer
Unmistakably a Jeep from any angle, the Patriot is surprisingly fuel efficient and a very affordable compact SUV. Available in both front-and all-wheel-drive configurations, it shares a common chassis and many of its components with its more contemporary Jeep stablemate the Compass. The Patriot is the boxy orthodox Jeep. Jeep launched the Patriot for the 2007 model year. While lots of smaller running changes and improvements were made in subsequent model years, its major components have remained essentially the same. The focus on refinements and cost reduction allows a base price of just $17,795. This makes Patriot the lowest-priced compact SUV on the market and if you skim though the auto advert pages you’ll probably see some great discount deals on Patriot. Patriot was also recently recognized as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Electronic stability control with roll mitigation is now standard and a new active headrestraint system for both front-seat occupants, which minimizes whiplash-type injuries, helped seal this award. Patriot comes in Sport, North Edition and Limited trim levels. A base (if you can get one) Patriot Sport is very basic; vinyl upholstery, steel wheels, manual windows, no air conditioning and a five-speed manual transmission, etc. It does, however, come with a rear wiper/ washer, 60/40 split-folding rear seats and a decent audio system. Moving up to Patriot North Edition ($20,795) you get cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, a fold-flat front passen-
ger seat and some other stuff. The top-line Patriot Limited ($23,795) primarily adds leather upholstery, power adjustment on the driver’s seat, satellite radio, steering wheel audio controls and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. The engine choices in Patriot are a 2.0-litre that can produce 158-horsepower and 141 lb-feet of torque or a 2.4L that can produce 172 hp and 165 lb-ft. of torque at a lower engine speed. Fuel economy is a little better with a 2.0L under hood, but for most people it’s probably not enough to forfeit the extra power offered by the 2.4-litre engine. Drive goes to the front wheels and there are optional all-wheeldrive packages available. If serious 4-wheeling is contemplated, a trailrated Freedom II off-road package (a $2,500 option) is the one to choose. It includes protective skid plates, more ground clearance, Hill-descent Control (HDC), Hill-start Assist (HSA) and 48-cm water-fording capability, a lowrange mode and a higher “crawl” ratio final drive. The downside is increased fuel consumption. Our test Patriot came with some unique convenience features such as Remote Start (it comes in a security package) that allows you to start the Patriot from the comfort of your home on a cold winter morning. Another was the 115-volt power outlet in the centre console, which allows you to power or recharge a laptop. The natural successor to the renowned Jeep Cherokee, Patriot has a rugged, utilitarian shape with sharp corners, straight lines and a more vertical windshield and back window than the Compass.

Its bumpers and wheel openings are also more strongly defined and unmistakably Jeep. The iconic sevenslot grille is flanked by round headlights up front. Big side mirrors and easy-grip big door handles may not be sleek and aerodynamic, but they get top marks for functionality. And on a Jeep they look perfectly okay. You sit five centimetres (two inches) higher in a Patriot than in a Compass. While that may not seem like a lot, it makes a significant difference to both the driving position and the overall feel of the vehicle. Since its intro, Jeep has reworked the Patriot’s instrument cluster, added padding to the centre console and door armrests. The new dash has nicer grain to the hard plastic sections and there’s more liberal use of chrome trimming and soft-touch materials. The rear doors are on the narrow side, but after you slide onto the rear seat you’ll find it surprisingly spacious. A generous amount of head room is provided and there’s room for your feet under the seat ahead. As already mentioned, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard and this system comes with traction control, antilock brakes, Brake Assist and roll mitigation system. The later intervenes and uses the brakes to steady the vehicle if it senses a potential rollover risk. Front seat side airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system are optional on the base Sport edition of Patriot. A nicely sized dualpurpose SUV, Patriot is small enough to park and manoeuvre on a congested city street, yet it still has enough room to pack your camping gear inside. It can be a fuelefficient daily commuter and double as a getaway wilderness wagon. In general, driver vision is very good, as Patriot has a big back window and extra-
large side mirrors. One exception is when you’re first in line at a traffic light, as the overhead signal tends to get hidden by the Patriot’s extended roof line. The 2.4-litre is a new generation World engine that Jeep shares with Mitsubishi and Hyundai. Even though it has dual variable valve timing, it’s not a sweet sounding engine when pushed to higher rpm, but it does pull impressively well at low rpm. Our test Patriot also came with four-wheel
