My, how we have changed. When he was a boy, his classmates threw eggs at him the first day he wore a turban to school. Today, Sarj, as he’s known to his friends, is moved to tears when he thinks about how his beloved city has grown to embrace his culture. Page 3.

Look at this picture. It shows how far Surrey has come. By Sarbjit S. Sabharwal

The Now’s Tom Zillich, centre, dons a turban with Mr. Singh, left, and Baljit S. Sabharwal, right, in 2006 ❚FILE PHOTO/Brian Howell for a story Zillich wrote for the Now about what it was like to wear a turban.

J

uly was such a big month as far as celebrations go. It’s really is the start of summer, as the weather really warms up around this time. We also have some of Surrey’s biggest events happen during the month of July. Specifically, I am talking about the City of Surrey’s Canada Day celebration and the Fusion Festival. I am proud to say that not only am I a proud supporter and sponsor of both of these events but I also help organize the India pavilion at the Fusion Festival. Volunteering as an organizer has really helped me understand some things about Surrey that I’d like to share with the Now’s readers. So many times we see articles about how different we are as a community and how little we integrate ourselves. The Fusion Festival shatters this perception. It is a role model for all cities to help bridge community differences and help create cultural understanding. I grew up in Surrey, so I know first hand the changes that have happened in the last 37 or so years. I have experienced the beauty of this place, as well as the ugliness of hatred. I have personally experienced a lot of racism in Surrey as a child. No, not the typical name calling, but more severe physical incidences involving hospital visits from assault – as early as the age of 10. But this place is my home, and has raised me to be the individual who I am today: someone proud of his heritage, culture and yes, his city. Racial hatred was common for

new immigrants in Surrey – I say was because things have come a long, long way. It’s not perfect, but I can say that this city has grown up a lot over these years. Immigrants – and people of colour in general – have a lot of resources and support to help them in times of need regarding racial problems. This brings me to the festival that I am so passionate about – the Fusion Festival. What a wonderful concept, to bring together cultures to help them understand one another, not mold them or melt them together, but just bring them closer together. This was its mission and this is its success. I have to congratulate our Mayor Dianne Watts and Coun. Barinder Rasode for continuing this amazing and important event that was started three years ago under the guidance of Mayor Watts, Coun. Mary Martin and council members. In its first year, I was a somewhat skeptical organizer of the India pavilion, as I wasn’t so sure if Surrey was ready to openly experience all the cultural richness it has hidden away. But to my surprise and delight the first year was a monumental success. What surprised me even more, nearly to the point of tears, was the response that the people of Surrey gave to our India pavilion. You see, I am a proud turbaned Sikh. I have struggled and watched my community struggle to maintain its identity for years. As a Grade 7 student at Betty Huff Elementary in Surrey, I decided it was the right time to start wearing the formal turban I

wear today to my school. To my sadness, the other students weren’t ready. In fact, there was a resentment toward my turban and at the first lunch break, a few of the other boys thought it would be funny to go home and grab some eggs and egg me on the head. I was already feeling very insecure, and this act caused me to delay wearing the turban until junior high. (If you’re reading this, I hope you boys realize that “egging” me only made me value my turban even more and I would hope you regretted the act.) In my eyes, mainstream society didn’t understand or want to understand how important the turban is to a Sikh or someone of the Punjabi community. Which brings me back to the Fusion Festival – part of our pavilion experience was dedicated to turban tying. This was something I was proud to bring to the event, but wasn’t sure would be a hit as the first day of the festival approached. Believe me, the egging incident kept coming into my thoughts; would mainstream society mock the turban as was done to me years ago? Was all this fusion too early? Would there be no interest in having a turban tied? I had so many doubts and so many worries. What happened that first day of the Fusion Festival brought me to a new level of happiness I never thought I could experience – the turban tying was the most popular event. Our turban tying lines were longer than any other. I had a grin from ear to ear the entire day. The people of Surrey

showed so much support and interest that I was overwhelmed with emotion. By the end of the festival, well over 2,000 turbans were tied. Turbans were tied on men, women, children, seniors and families. We even had all the stage crew displaying their turbans with respect and pride – the truest form of cultural understanding. The 2009 and 2010 festivals were no less of a success, with the turban tying being one of the most popular events. I suppose understanding happened at all levels. The residents of Surrey who tied a turban gained the experience and respect of what Sikhs go through to tie their turbans, plus the extreme value Sikhs place on the turban. But what surprised me was the understanding I gained about the good people of Surrey, how things have changed for the better. I firmly believe now that it is time that we nourish events like the Fusion Festival. Of course, without direction and leadership none of this is possible, and I have to say that Mayor Watts and Coun. Rasode (the chair of the Fusion Festival and someone who really went out of her way to make this a success) and the rest of our city council should be congratulated on the festival’s success. As well, I’d like to personally thank the staff of events department at City of Surrey, Mary, Dan and Melissa – you guys (and gals) are the best! Thank you. I can’t wait until next July.

NEIGHBOURHOOD TREES

TREES ARE THIRSTY TOO! Summer is upon us and the weather is warm, but the trees on your street and in your yards are suffering! Just as we get thirsty in hot dry weather, so do trees. Like us, they also need long refreshing drinks of water to replenish their fluids. Please help quench the thirst of your street trees and private property trees by following these guidelines: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Please water street trees and the trees in your yard twice a week. Water thoroughly at the base of the tree for a minimum of 15 minutes (or 20 litres). Water when it isn’t raining. Water during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and dusk). Water slowly so that the water has time to soak into the dry soil and reach the tree roots, rather than just running off the surface.

SURREY – City Ted Coun. Barbara COLLEY Staff Reporter Steele is jazzed about plans to create a regional park at Surrey Bend. “It’s going to be beautiful,” Steels said. “It’s going to be like the Stanley Park of South Fraser.” The city and Metro Vancouver will ante up $350,000 apiece to finance the planning of the new park. Once it’s built, Metro Vancouver will manage the park, offer programs like nature interpretation, guided walks and bylaw enforcement. Park operating costs will be borne by the regional district. Surrey Bend is a 348-hectare (860-acre) complex of parks and protected areas on the Fraser River at the north end of 104th Avenue. Both the city and the regional district have been buying land at Surrey Bend since 1995. The park plan, developed through consultation with a variety of stakeholder groups and input from three public meetings, will include a trail network, washrooms, a picnic area, a viewing platform and a dock. The plan also allows for the protection of large areas of bog, forest and shoreline habitat and the water system that created those ecosystems. “Surrey Bend is an integral component of our ecosystem, home to many natural habitats and important species of life,” Mayor Dianne Watts said. “We need to protect and study this sensitive area, while allowing more people to enjoy the beauty of nature.” The Metro Vancouver board was to vote on the plan last Friday after the Now had gone to press. If the project is approved, additional hydrologic and geotechnical studies will be conducted and detailed design will start next year. Construction would begin in 2012. of both roads being blocked again was slight, but council was uneasy at rejecting outright an emergency road. “Coun. Judy Villeneuve asked to have the report sent back to staff,” Coun. Barbara Steele said. “Council voted to send it back and ask staff to find another solution.” Villeneuve, who lives in Crescent Beach, pointed out that hundreds, if not thousands, of people descend on the village beaches every summer. She also said when long trains pass through, the two existing roads are blocked for as much as 10 minutes. “If someone’s in a life or death situation,” she said, “that doesn’t bode well. I just don’t think we’d be acting in a responsible way if we say ‘no’ to this.” Mayor Dianne Watts agreed, saying she means to see the access built, one way or another. Steele also thinks something has to be done. “It seems like a lot of money for something that might not happen, but I think we’ve got to do it. You can’t be stuck in some place and not be able to get out.”

SURREY – City Ted council has sent staff COLLEY Staff Reporter back to the drawing board to find emergency access to Crescent Beach that can’t be blocked by trains. There are just two roads leading into the South Surrey village and both intersect the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line that winds around the Semiahmoo JUDY Peninsula on its way to and from VILLENEUVE/ the U.S. The roads are a mere 500 “I just don’t metres apart and can be blocked think we’d when long trains pass through be acting in town. In 2007, a train broke down in a responsible Crescent Beach and both access way if we say roads were blocked for several ‘no’ to this.” hours. Residents, afraid they’ll be left high and dry in an emergency, have been lobbying city hall for a third road in that doesn’t cross the railway. On Monday, council received a staff report rejecting a proposed route under the BNSF trestle at the nearby marina on the grounds it would be expensive – somewhere between $500,000 and $1.5 million depending on the scale of the work – and liability insurance would also be pricey. The report said the likelihood

❚ NEWS ❚SURREY/Public Safety Minister speaks at Surrey Board of Trade luncheon

Better co-operation needed between U.S., Canada, Toews tells lunch crowd Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter

Conservative Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told a small Surrey Board of Trade lunch gathering Friday he wants to see Canadian and American border protection services working more closely together. He described meet-

ings earlier this month in Washington, D.C. with Janet Napolitano, Secretary of Homeland Security, and other U.S. officials. “The focus of our discussions was cross-border trade and security,” Toews said, noting Canada’s economy depends on free movement of people and goods across the border, while her security depends on identifying threats, preferably before they reach our shores. Close co-operation between the two countries, he said, will ensure that security needs are met without slowing legitimate traffic of goods and people. Toews pointed to the Shiprider program in which RCMP officers and U.S. Coast Guard personnel jointly manned craft patrolling the waters between B.C. and Washington State and on the Great Lakes between Ontario and New York State. The integrated crews were very effective, he said, at intercepting water-borne contraband and were able to operate on both sides of

This year’s bad timing award has to go to Enbridge Inc., the latest oil company to become Keith enmeshed in BALDREY a public relations nightmare caused by a leak in one of its pipelines. I wrote in this space a couple of months back that Enbridge’s bid for approval of its Northern Gateway pipeline from Alberta to Kitimat would be a hard sell, from both political and environmental perspectives. That hard sell has now become near impossible, as public outrage over the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and now Enbridge’s own spill in Michigan may be sounding the death knell of Enbridge’s plans. While its Gateway pipeline will still go through a federal environmental process, it’s almost impossible to believe the Harper government will give the final go-ahead. While there is some local support for the project, based on its job creation potential, the opposition is more organized and vocal. First Nations firmly oppose the pipeline, and the Michigan spill will heighten concerns about the same thing happening in this province. Enbridge has been criticized for its inadequate response to the spill of 3.1 million litres of oil into the Kalamazoo River, creating a 50kilometre slick that threatens to drift into Lake Michigan. As well, it has been accused of ignoring concerns that its pipeline had seriously deteriorated. Not exactly the kind of publicity Enbridge needs as its pushes to build another such pipeline here. The spill in Michigan took place in a populated area that is relatively easy to get to for cleanup. But the proposed north-

ern pipeline runs through remote, pristine wilderness where access is anything but easy, thus presenting a nightmarish scenario of a similar leak occurring in a place where a clean-up response may almost be impossible. But before all the anti-Gateway folks get too excited, remember this: Alberta’s dirty tarsands oil will still be shipped to Asia (notably China) and that means potentially even more oil being loaded and shipped out of Vancouver. That could translate into even more tanker traffic through Burrard Inlet and the Juan de Fuca Strait. Tankers have been plying those waters for decades, and traffic is already up significantly the past few years. For now, the tankers have carried oil from the Kinder Morgan pipeline that extends from Alberta to Burnaby. One of the trickiest parts of the ocean voyage occurs early on: navigating through the Second Narrows in Burrard Inlet, which is just 121 metres wide and not very deep. The BP oil spill understandably has everyone concerned about oil drilling and has revived awful memories of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. Many people

have called for a ban on tanker traffic, period. But those who want to kill all the pipelines and beach all the oil tankers are ignoring an essential part of the picture – we depend on oil for our state of living. To think otherwise is to ignore reality. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try to wean ourselves off of oil dependence, but that will take many, many years and require a huge shift in our social behaviour. There is a hypocritical streak embedded in many of the moral arguments against oil usage. (For example, how many people who attend anti-oil protests take dieselburning transit or gas-fueled cars to get there?) The Alberta oil sands are an enormous financial investment for the companies involved up there. They are not going to walk away because a pipeline doesn’t get built to Kitimat. Rather, the dirty oil will find a way out of the province – and that still means cutting through B.C. – either through the existing pipeline or, more likely, via tanker rail cars — and likely into the Burnaby refinery. And that will mean more tankers cruising past Vancouver,

the supposedly green capital of Canada. Kitimat’s loss is not necessarily Vancouver’s gain. Oil spills do happen. Let’s just hope and pray one doesn’t occur if a tanker runs aground or collides with something in Burrard Inlet or out in the waters surrounding the Gulf Islands. If it does, we’ll have a tough time continuing to brag about being the “best place on Earth.” Oil-soaked beaches along Stanley Park aren’t exactly the kind of image that goes with that claim. Secondary-suite solution allows Surrey to move forward with confidence The Editor, After more than 30 years of debate and uncertainty, the City of Surrey has moved to implement its own policy on secondary suites in single-family homes. As a member of this community for most of my life, I have watched, listened and participated as a citizen in the debate around the issue of secondary suites. Ultimately, as a city councillor since 2005 I, along with the entire council, have struggled to find the best solution to an issue that effects us all but has gone unresolved for decades, a political football tossed off by generations of councils before this one. As with our predecessors, we were aware that it was time council took the leadership role for which we were elected and

produced a secondary-suite policy based in reality. The difference is that this council acted, recognizing that the approval of this policy will provide a respectful, safe, affordable, and variety of housing choices for people seeking rental accommodations in our city. Furthermore, with homeowners now able to efficiently install or convert existing nonconforming suites to legal suites, home ownership becomes more realistic for many citizens. As well, this bylaw recognizes the important human element of allowing extended families to live together. It should be noted that the policy direction adopted by council is the result of extensive public consultation. As part of the dialogue with citizens and community groups, council

undertook a city-wide Ipsos Reid poll to gauge public response to the long-time issue. According to the survey, 63 per cent of Surrey residents agree that allowing one secondary suite in a single-family home is a positive, progressive step for the city. The decision to move forward with a secondary suite bylaw was a necessary one. I applaud staff for their due diligence in looking for best practices in this area from other Lower Mainland municipalities, all of which have existing secondary-suite bylaws, and taking those ideas and, in my opinion, improving upon them with a uniquely “made in Surrey” approach. Finally, I commend my fellow councillors for unanimously taking the correct step in moving forward with a bylaw that

brings Surrey in line with both the wishes of its residents and the policies of our neighbouring communities. After 30 years of uncertainty, Surrey can move forward with the confidence that the wishes of the majority of its citizens have won the day on an issue that affects us all.

Tom Gill City of Surrey councillor

Suite bylaw will drive home prices even higher The Editor, Congratulations to the City of Surrey for helping ensure that housing prices will keep climbing higher and out of the price range for the average first-time buyer.

Now that secondary suits are no longer illegal, there is more incentive for people to purchase the smaller, more affordable rancher homes, in order to knock them down and build a larger home – big enough for at least one suite. When destroying these perfectly good, yet smaller older homes, the lower-priced homes are taken out of the real estate inventory forever. These more affordable homes will be replaced with larger and far more expensive homes. As the average house price rises, more people will be forever stuck renting the basement suites of these mega homes instead of being able to afford their own home.

Educational experience extends to Evelyn Zaklan and other art-loving volunteers at the Bear Creek Park gallery When Evelyn Zaklan Tom ZILLICH retired from a 30-year Staff reporter teaching career, it didn’t take her long to work with young kids again. She volunteered her time in classrooms for the first couple of years after retirement, and then discovered the joys of being a docent at Surrey Art Gallery. “It seemed like a really good opportunity, an interesting volunteer position,” said the former Kindergarten teacher. Today, with a dozen years under her belt as a trained guide at the gallery, Zaklan is among the longest-serving such volunteers at the Bear Creek Park facility, located not far from her home in Newton. As a docent, she is constantly challenged to understand new art and how to appreciate it. “It’s a learning experience for me, too,” Zaklan told the Now. “Every three months, down goes a show that we just got comfortable with, and then a new one comes along. It keeps us challenged. I think that’s why we docents stay, because it’s something different every day.” Surrey Art Gallery is currently searching for more docents, to add to the roster of two dozen trained volunteers who share a passion for art and education. A training program begins in mid-September; applications are encouraged before Aug. 20. The program involves 30 hours of volunteer time each month for the first three months of training, then 20 hours monthly during the school year. Docents must be 19 years of age or older. Tour groups typically range from Kindergarten age to Grade 5, and docents are expected to lead one session per week. “Because I live so close to the gallery, I can come do a couple of tours a week,” said Zaklan. During the school year, docents meet every two weeks on a Monday morning for three hours — “classroom” time with gallery staff and the artists whose work is exhibited there.

“They’re so enthusiastic about the art,” Zaklan said. “They pass that on to us, and we try to pass on that enthusiasm to the children.… We often have works created by students hanging in the gallery, so I tell them that they too could have their (art) in the gallery. That tends to excite them.” More than anything, docents at the gallery help young students respond to original works of art. Zaklan is not an artist. “I have tried it, but I’m better at appreciating it.” One of her favourite exhibits of recent times was the touring Quilt of Belonging, a massive tapestry that involves the multicultural creations of people from all corners of Canada. “It was so much fun to tour the children

through that exhibit,” Zaklan recalled. “It got them talking about their racial and ethnic heritage. Each little piece was a work of art.” She highly endorses the docent experience — including its “lovely social group” aspect — at the gallery, which focuses on art made since 1975. “It’s contemporary art — that’s the mandate of the gallery, so some of the art is a bit off the wall — quite literally,” Zaklan said. “The tech lab is often a challenge, but it’s a learning experience and the artists are there to enlighten us.” ❚ To get involved as a docent at Surrey Art Gallery, call the volunteer co-ordinator at 604501-5198 or email artsvolunteer@surrey.ca. More details are online at www.arts.surrey.ca.

Working closely with the current group leaders, the volunteer facilitator will be involved in a variety of activities. Training is provided. Mastering the art of the hot rod Art of the Hot Rod, by Ken Gross, Motorbooks, 240 pages, $43.95. It started in Southern California more than 50 years ago as young men took old cars and turned them into eye-catching vehicles. It was all about style and speed. Today the passion for hot rods has continued to evolve and the creations of the modern era have as much ingenuity and presence as any concept car rolled out by a major automaker. And it is still all about style and speed. Author Ken Gross and photographer Peter Hardholt present 20 outstanding contemporary hot rods in this beautiful collection. Some, like the author’s own 1932 Ford Roadster, reflect an aesthetic that maintains the defining elements of the original design. From there the designer, Dave Simard, has taken off with fabulous chrome work and a powerhouse engine unfamiliar with dirt. Most of the cars featured in the book are from the 1930s and appear with a series of colour photographs and an interview with the builder.

Styled for the northern elements

Modern North, by Julie Decker, Princeton Architectural Press, 239 pages, $52. Every climate zone comes with its own unique building concerns. How the weather will affect the structure through the seasons, and what challenges it will cause for the original

construction process, are things the architects must factor in. Those issues are magnified when you enter the far northern regions. Recognizing those special criteria and the extraordinary solutions made in this interesting collection of structures, author Julie Decker includes buildings from Alaska, Yukon, Iceland, Norway, Finland and Sweden. The featured projects range in size and purpose. The Monastery for Cistercian Nuns on Tautra Island in Norway is a remarkable series of buildings that embraces the sunlight while blending into the surrounding landscape. A 2,500-square-foot house in Big Lake, Alaska, embraces a panoramic view with enormous windows and a unique rooftop deck. Schools, museums, guest lodges and private residences are all selected for this collection. Every structure is introduced with the inclusion of its latitude, and mean temperatures for summer and winter. Along with the descriptions, colour photographs and architectural drawings complete each presentation. — Terry Peters

Winning filmmaker keeps on truckin’

Contest winner John Banovich (second from right) with wife Melissa, son John Michael and James Orr of Toyota Canada, at Peace Arch Toyota dealership. ❚PHOTO/contributed

Close to 60 hours of film work paid off for John Banovich, whose efforts landed him a new truck. The South Surreyite is the grand prize winner in the “Win a 4Runner Video Contest” staged by Toyota Canada. His creative entry, which involved an imagined first time behind the wheel of a 4Runner, was tops among nearly 200 entries from across Canada. Basically, the video is about a guy who loves the truck but doesn’t have one — and goes to

the woods making truck noises. The video “captured the enthusiasm of Toyota truck owners in a truly humorous way,” said Stephen Beatty, managing director at Toyota Canada. Banovich is a film director and cinematographer who has frequently pressed into service a 2001 Toyota Tacoma for his GreenEarth Films productions. “It’s been the backbone of my wildlife and nature cinematography work, in lots of places,” Banovich.

Naturally, his goal was to the win the video contest. “We believe in the product, that’s the key,” he said. The winning video is posted online at johnbanovich.net/media/ practicing4runner.mov. Banovich made the comedy Sharp as Marbles in 2007. He is also known for his work with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, following his near-death car crash involving an impaired driver in 1997. — Tom Zillich

Susan Falk’s Implications of Runway: A Modern Twist on an Ancient Form of Expression is the exhibit for the month of August at the gallery operated by White Rock Community Arts Council. An opening reception happens Thursday, Aug. 5, from 7 to 9 p.m. at #90-1959 152nd St., Surrey. Implications of Runway (sample pictured) portrays a clash between early Paleolithic cave painting and what Falk calls “hip runway chicks.” She believes cave paintings expose the “ever-human impulse to portray oneself and be inspired to enhance and connect with beauty.”

❚ LIVING ❚RAIL TRAVEL

Great food, amazing views Calgary Lauren is sleeping KRAMER soundly in the Contributor pitch-black of an early fall morning when the Rocky Mountaineer train pulls out of Union Station. It’s 6:15 a.m. and most passengers are bleary eyed but for the jumpstart of coffee, lulled into inertia by the fast movement of the train as we zip through the darkness en route to Banff. When the morning light creeps in, there are towering mountains on either side of us and the sun breaks gently over their rocky slopes. Around us there’s a hum of chatter with accents hailing from Germany, England and Australia. Many of these travellers have come vast distances, lured by the prospect of seeing the day break over the snow-capped Rockies. The mountains steal the show, their silhouettes highlighted by the blue sky of a perfectly clear morning. Some have smooth, snow-topped foreheads while others, like Castle and Cathedral mountains, have jagged spears and ridges protruding from them, evidence of meticulous sculpting by glaciers millions of years ago. And what a place to experience them. Rocky Mountaineer Railtours offers a Banff-toVancouver circuit, one of its most popular trips. As I curl up and gaze out of my window from the Gold Leaf dome carriage, it’s easy to understand why. Gold Leaf service means raspberry scones and quiches to take the edge off any hunger before the formal breakfast, and champagne and orange juice to toast the voyage. It means white tablecloths and exquisitely presented gourmet meals cooked in a swaying kitchen carriage. Passengers are plied all day long with offerings of wine and beverages, chocolate chip cookies straight from the oven and snacks and canapés to add flavour to the scenery. We pass through the alpine village of Lake Louise during breakfast, a sumptuous meal of asparagus omelettes, kelp caviar and smoked salmon. Here, we reach the continental divide, the point of highest altitude in our journey and the rooftop of the provinces of Alberta and B.C. The divide marks the place

A view of Morants Curve, Alberta, and the Rocky Mountaineer train. The company’s Banff-to-Vancouver trip is popular with visitors from around the world.

of separation where snowmelt flows into the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Pacific on the other. But on this day, the waterfalls are frozen into stillness and the initial dusting of powder gives way to large expanses of snow that cake the mountain’s layers of dolomite and limestone rock. The Rockies are only one of a number of mountain ranges we will traverse. On the first day, we move steadily through the Ottertail, Van Horne and Beaverfoot ranges, with brief glimpses at the Kicking Horse River as it tumbles over sloping rocks. Apart from glaciers and mountains, it’s wildlife we’re watching for. Bears are a frequent sighting on these trips, as are elk, moose, bighorn sheep, wolves and other animals. The next day the scenery changes dramatically, to that of desert country alongside the Thompson River canyon. Sightings of bear and bald eagles become more frequent along the riverbank as they feast on the wasting bodies of the salmon. Within a few hours the scenery changes again and the barren desert yields to the maples and Douglas fir forests of the Fraser River canyon. We’re in a temperate rainforest, the trees turning that magical fall colour of yellow and gold. Travel through this landscape and the view is tranquilizing for the very soul, the kind of scenery that makes you sigh deeply in grateful appreciation of living in so beautiful a region of the world. Stone bridges sail by, crucifixes adorn long-unused cemeteries and magnificent expanses of land stretch forever — a reminder of how small and insignificant our cities really are. These are mountains and rapids that have been there forever, coursing through the land from generation to generation. To see them up close is something spectacular.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a B.C. boy – born and raised in Richmond. I began playing football while attending high school at Vancouver College and continued to develop my skills during my university career at Simon Fraser. I have been a fan of the Black and Orange all my life and distinctly remember attending Lions games at BC Place in the 1980s. My brother Mark was briefly a Lion in 1990 – so football genes definitely run in my family! After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day and play the game I love, and I’m more determined than ever to bring the Grey Cup home to B.C. at least one more time during my career. As one of the longest-serving veterans on the team and the guy anchoring the offensive line in the centre position, I take a leadership role in the locker room and am sometimes looked to for advice by the younger players. Our team — and the O-line in particular — is like a family to me and I’m proud of my contributions in the locker room and on the field. As the second-youngest of six kids in my family, I looked up to my older siblings when I was growing up for inspiration and guidance. For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the club’s Lions in the House initiative. It makes me feel proud to know that I could have a positive influence on a young person who is at a very important time in their life. As much as I love playing professional football, I believe it’s also important to give back to the community you grew up in and set a good example for the next generation.

❚ AUTOMOTIVE

These days, it seems like everyone is tightening their wallet, and drivers everywhere are looking to get the most out of every tank of gasoline. While some people use alternate modes of transportation, many need their cars on a daily basis. For those in the driver’s seat, there are simple ways to increase fuel efficiency and save at the pump. “With the cost of vehicle ownership and car care growing every year, we all want to be more fuel efficient,” says Jens Mueller-Belau, Fuels Portfolio and Category Manager North America, Shell Retail. “Using money-saving driving techniques and car care tips are an easy way to help get the most out of every gasoline purchase.” Following are some tips designed to help drivers save money. ❚ Drive smoothly: Avoid heavy acceleration or heavy braking. Speeding, rapid acceleration and heavy braking can use as much as 33 per cent more fuel than sensible driving. ❚ Service your car regularly: A well-tuned engine alone can improve fuel economy by up to four per cent so follow your car manufacturer’s recommendation for servicing, and change your oil as required. It’s also important to keep your entire vehicle well maintained. A poorly maintained vehicle can

increase fuel consumption by up to 50 per cent. Even replacing dirty spark plugs can improve fuel consumption by five per cent, so you should read the vehicle owner’s manual thoroughly to familiarize yourself with its mechanical maintenance requirements. ❚ Make sure tires are not over or underinflated:Proper air pressure cutsdown on fuel used while driving. A tire that is underinflated by just two psi (14 kPa) can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as two percent and reduce the tire’s life by about 6,500 kilometres. ❚ Use the correct grade of oil in your engine: Following your manufacturer’s motor oil recommendation can improve fuel efficiency by one to two percent. Look for motor oil that says “energy conserving” on the label. ❚ Choose a high-quality gasoline: Top automakers say thatcarbon deposits can build up on critical engine parts, which can decrease the power, performance and fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Audi, BMW, GM, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen introduced a TOP TIER detergent standard to raise the bar on fuel quality beyond minimum requirements and to help drivers avoid lower quality gasolines. ❚ Use cruise control on major roads and in free-flowing traffic: Maintaining a constant speed can improve gasoline mileage. – News Canada

For every dollar spent on maintaining your vehicle, you stand to keep $6 in your pocket, claims a recent study in the automotive industry. The report showed that for the 8,000 vehicles studied, $1.2 million was spent and $7.5 million was saved. The reported savings factored in the cost of car payments, interest, and insurance. Here’s a handy checklist aimed at doubling your car’s life expectancy: ❚ Tune-up. A regular tuneup is recommended, even with the high-tech performance of today’s vehicles. At least once

We’ve all been overtaken by speed demons trying to make it through the next light without stopping. They pick up the pace, put the pedal to the metal and screech out in front hoping to gain that minute or two advantage. Sometimes, for all their speeding, those same drivers arrive at the light at the same time as we do. Have you ever wondered how much fuel they burn and how much time they really save? According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), speeding and aggressive driving burns excessive fuel, wastes money and does not save a significant amount of time. If someone told you that you could save two minutes of time by burning up to 39 per cent more fuel would you do it? Would it be worth it? With gasoline prices skyrocketing in many Canadian cities, and with growing concerns for the environment, does it really make sense to speed and drive aggressively? Save yourself some money and slow down. You can find more money-saving driving tips at www.vehicles. nrcan.gc.ca. – News Canada
