SURREY – Jason Buie has the blues worse than usual these days after someone stole his vintage 1973 Fender Stratocaster. Buie, well known locally and abroad for his hard-driving blues guitar and vocals, was performing in Victoria, his old hometown, when his South Surrey home was robbed. “It was Friday night at some point. I was doing a gig here in Victoria, an acoustic gig,” Buie said, explaining why he didn’t have the Strat with him.

Crash kills man SURREY – A White Rock man died in hospital after a pickup truck crashed head-on into his sedan early Monday morning. The crash happened at about 3 a.m., at Colebrook Road and 153rd Street in Surrey. The Surrey driver and passenger of the pickup sustained minor injuries while the driver of the sedan suffered serious leg and chest injuries and later died in hospital. His teenaged son, who was riding with him, suffered minor injuries. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. Witnesses are asked to call 604-599-0502.

It’s a record of some of the high points of his musical career. “I got it when I was 19 and over the years I got to open for some blues greats, guys like Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, and I got them to sign it for me. My first wife broke it in half. Paul Iverson in North Van fixed it. It’s also got some

cigarette burns on the headstock, from back in the day when you could play in a club and still smoke.” Buie also lost a Macintosh computer containing song files for his next CD, along with other personal possessions. “I’d just got a new iMac so I could do some home recording and stuff and started working on a new CD.” Buie reported the theft to

police and has people watching pawnshops in the area and keeping an eye on craigslist. The Strat means a lot to him and he wants it back. SURREY – A pair of teens were stabbed during a fight near the Husky gas station at 128th Street and 76th Avenue just after midnight Saturday. Both victims are 18 years old. At press time police were still looking for their attacker. Both young men are expected to fully recover from their injuries. One was stabbed in the hand, and the other was stabbed in the head and stomach. – Tom Zytaruk

SURREY – A Surrey woman has won her wrongful dismissal suit against Atira Women’s Resource Society in Vancouver after she was fired for not attending an afternoon staff meeting four hours after she’d completed her night shift. Diane Giles, 48, had worked as a support worker at the society for three years before being fired in July 2008. Counsel for the employer said Giles was fired because she “refused and failed” to attend a scheduled afternoon staff meeting after completing a night shift, despite the fact that she was instructed to do so by her superior. The defendant also

characterized Giles’ refusal “as disobedience or insubordination,” Judge Valmond Romilly stated in his reasons for decision. “Apparently, a previous manager had scheduled such meetings first thing in the morning to facilitate the overnight staff, so that they could still get some sleep in the afternoon before returning for their night shift,” the judge noted. Giles’ lawyer noted that Section 36(2) of the Employment Standards Act states that an employer must ensure each worker “has at least eight hours free from work” between each shift. The court heard Giles worked from 11:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. Considering she lived in Surrey but worked in Vancouver, she told the court she’d have to hang

around in Vancouver for several hours waiting for the meeting to start at noon. “She contended that if she had attended the meeting, she would have had to work all night, stay awake all day, attend the meeting and then go back to work and go without sleep for two days,” Romilly noted. The court heard that Giles told a newly appointed program manager, Shauna Baylis, that the meetings were previously scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and not noon. She informed the manager about her travel schedule and that she lived in Surrey, the court heard, but was told her schedule was “irrelevant” and that she had to attend. She didn’t. Giles told the court two other support workers didn’t attend

the meeting, either, as one was excused and the other fell asleep, but neither was fired, as she was. On cross-examination, Baylis told the court she had not checked with anyone about past practices concerning staff meetings. She also denied that she knew Giles had a scheduling problem. Romilly found that while Giles’ non-attendance at the meeting constituted “an isolated act of disobedience,” it was “not one of substance” and that she “had reasonable excuse.” “I find it unfortunate that the new manager did not think it necessary to acquaint herself with previous practices and requirements before issuing a direction to Ms. Giles, which can be considered an unlawful direction

which an employee could properly refuse to carry out,” Romilly found. “I also find that the circumstances of this isolated act of disobedience and given Ms. Giles’ personal circumstances, should have required a greater attempt at reasonable accommodation and/or a dispute resolution as contemplated by the employer’s policies manual, rather than the extreme resolution of dismissal for cause. “I therefore find that the claimant was terminated without just cause and was therefore wrongfully terminated,” the judge decided. Giles found another job one month after being terminated by Atira. Romilly awarded her $5,110 in damages. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey Food Bank mourns the loss of ‘a good soul’ A much-loved Ted member of the COLLEY Staff Reporter Surrey Food Bank family is gone. For the past 13 years, Rita Desbiens worked as a volunteer for the Whalley charity. Last Friday, the 43-year-old died suddenly, leaving many at the food bank mourning her. Food bank executive director Marilyn Herrmann told the Now Monday that Desbiens recently fell down the stairs at home and hurt her ankle. She initially thought it was only a sprain, but when the pain continued unabated. Desbiens consulted a doctor. “It turned out she’d actually broken her foot and she needed surgery to fix it,” Herrmann said. “She came through the surgery alright, but sometime Thursday night or Friday morning, she couldn’t breathe and she died. It’s really tragic.” Herrmann said an autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death. Meanwhile, she and everyone else at the food bank are trying to come to terms with

Desbiens’ sudden demise. “We’ve been drying some tears around here today. It’s the loss of a good soul.” Herrmann said Desbiens began as a client of the food bank and eventually volunteered as a way to repay the help she’d been given. “She’s been through some tough times in her life, so she knew what it was like for others. Many of our long-term clients, people who knew her, are very upset.” Some food bank volunteers have special needs and are finding it difficult to understand what’s happened, but the Whalley RCMP district office is coming to the rescue. “I was over there earlier this morning on another matter and I asked them if they had grief counsellors. They said, ‘Yes, and we’ll get one for you.’ That’s the kind of community we have here,” Herrmann said. A memorial service is on hold pending completion of the autopsy. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

Mountie gets probation for roughing up prisoner Lambert has maintained his employment with the RCMP since the incident happened three years ago, during a burglary investigation. The Crown opposed a conditional discharge, arguing that Lambert had breached the public trust. Calling for the need for deterrence and denunciation, the Crown pointed out that the prisoner was in a vulnerable position and that the justice system is obliged to protect such people. The judge said that although he believes that people in Const. Lambert’s position “should be held accountable for their responsibility,” he also believes “in the principle of redemption.” Gardner said it would be unfair to “define and characterize” Lambert’s career “by this one unfortunate incident and one momentary lapse of judgment. “The incident should be viewed in the context of his entire career,” the judge decided. “I am about to sentence someone who continues to not only receive the support of his fellow officers, but he has also been actively involved in a youth hockey program since 2006 which assists local high school students who are at risk.” Lambert must complete his community work by Nov. 30th.

SURREY – A Surrey Tom ZYTARUK Mountie found guilty of Staff Reporter assaulting a handcuffed prisoner he slammed onto a police car has received a conditional discharge plus six months probation and 25 hours of community work. That means Const. Francois Joseph Lambert, 35, will receive no criminal record as long as he complies with the terms that were set out by the judge. Lambert has been with the RCMP since 2004. Despite earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in marketing, he decided to follow in the footsteps of his father and brother and became a cop, quitting his sales job with a sporting goods company. “Although I have found him guilty of assaulting a prisoner who was in his custody, I note the complainant was not injured,” Surrey provincial court Judge Donald Gardner said in his sentencing reasons. “The complainant also displayed a very forgiving attitude about this incident. He said in his evidence that he was upset for a day or two but then he sort of forgot about it.” A fellow officer reported the assault.

Murder suspect’s friends urinated on teen’s memorial: neighbours SURREY – Homicide Tom ZYTARUK Staff Reporter investigators believe 17year-old Adem Aliu of Surrey was street executed for slashing tires in a Whalley neighbourhood early Wednesday morning. Fifteen hours later, police arrested Steven Brandon Mulligan-Brum, 20, of Surrey, for the shooting. He appeared in Surrey provincial court on Friday morning, charged with second-degree murder. Supt. Dan Malo, in charge of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Aliu and some of his buddies had been drinking and slashing the tires of cars that were parked about two blocks away from where he was shot, in the middle of 103rd Avenue, just east of 141st Street. The shooting happened at about 3:20 a.m.

“They were acting like stupid children,” Malo said of Aliu and his friends. “As a result of that, unfortunately, one male who we know is involved in the criminal lifestyle, is involved in the gang lifestyle, had (allegedly) taken it upon himself to end ADEM ALIU that person’s life.” Malo said Mulligan-Brum was the driver of one of the vandalized vehicles. He and Aliu did not know each other prior to the incident, he added. “It’s an absolute awful tragedy that a 17year-old male who really does something

One of the more irritating aspects of our parliamentary system is that the role of the official Keith Opposition is often ill defined. BALDREY It’s not just about opposing everything the government does. But too often Opposition parties do just that – oppose everything – and if they take a holierthan-thou stance on everything, it can come back to bite them should they ever move into government. We are seeing that maxim play out continually with the B.C. Liberal government. The issues on which they can be accused of hypocrisy – saying and demanding one thing while in Opposition, and doing the precise opposite in government – are piling up. The latest reminder is the decision to expand government gaming operations – yet again – to include online casino gambling. The move makes sense, although it will be condemned by the puritans out there, who regard any kind of gambling as some sort of social evil that should be eradicated, not expanded. Gambling will occur whether the government is involved in it or not, so the more the government can control gambling, the better. The gaming industry creates enormous revenues for “the house,” and the billion dollars or so B.C. collects every year helps fund social services, education and health care. But this argument seemed to have been lost on B.C. Liberals when they were in Opposition. They engaged in bouts of self-righteous indignation whenever the NDP government of the day tried to expand gambling (for instance, the introduction of slot machines

Liberals are handing NDP an easy win for 2013

and the creation of more casinos). With the zealotry of religious fanatics, Gordon Campbell and his caucus attacked the NDP as immoral monsters hell-bent on destroying our social fabric. Naturally, once they became government, the B.C. Liberals learned to love gambling and the money to be made off it. Now they stand accused, yet again, of rank hypocrisy on this issue. But spare them no tears, because there are other examples of hypocrisy that are attached to a government because of the unrealistic moral high ground it carves out when it is in Opposition. For example, the B.C. Liberals also went to town over what it viewed as a heinous amount of public debt being piled up by the NDP government. Our children — and our children’s children! — would inevitably pay for this fiscal nonsense, was the constant refrain from the Liberals. Government services would naturally be squeezed by the mounting debt. Or so the argument went. So what has happened to the debt while the B.C. Liberals have been in power? Has it gone down, or at least flat-lined? Well, no. The total government debt was $34 billion when the B.C. Liberals took power and it is forecast to hit almost $53 million

next year. So much for the hysterical arguments heard in Opposition. The NDP’s general fiscal competence was derided by a sneering Liberal Opposition, yet the B.C. Liberals have shown equal ability in piling up huge budget deficits or tabling false budgets (the pre-election budget was a real whopper, as the latest public accounts reveal in great detail). The list goes on: vicious attacks on the NDP over the issue of child protection, contrasted to fighting with the independent children’s representative over service cuts and lack accountability on that very issue. Then there’s granddaddy of them all: an oft-repeated promise not to sell B.C. Rail, and then doing just that in a questionable transaction (to say the least, given there is a criminal trial mixed up with it). Piling up the hypocrisy begins to lend a stench to a government. Throw in the perceived deceitfulness associated with the HST, and the air is getting fairly ripe around the B.C. Liberals right now. Will New Democrats learn a lesson from this? With electoral victory in 2013 seeming more likely by the day, the NDP would be wise to resist the temptation of cloaking themselves with moral

piety, of pretending everything in government is so simple, and that everything the B.C. Liberals do these days is horrible. NDP leader Carole James has smartly backed away from automatically scrapping the HST. And the NDP hasn’t exactly said it will forgo any of the gambling expansion either. The NDP will need to provide some coherent, credible alternative policies to the Liberals. But if they overplay their hand, and make unrealistic statements like the B.C. Stories are worthy of Letterman The Editor, Re: “Must be the heat – strange but true stories,” the Now, July 13. Huge kudos to Tom Zytaruk. It is not often that a news report brings laughter but the four articles he wrote had me giggling. The last article about the “Birthday suit bust” had to be shared and my friends all roared at the last line – “no word on whether they were ugly.” We all said that it’s worthy of being sent in to David Letterman. Great job and I’ll look for more of these stories. Thanks for the smiles.

Attempt at humour missed mark The Editor, Re: “Must be the heat – strange but true stories,” the Now, July 13. I have a question about the final sentence in the piece, “Birthday suit bust.” The line reads, “No word on whether they were ugly.” Is this a misprint or an inoffice joke that accidentally made it to press? Whether any police officer or newspaper reporter judges any other person to be “ugly” or not, I hardly think that this is appropriate to note in a news item. My impression of your paper has taken a very sudden and steep downturn. I now trust the Now as much as I do 24Hours or Metro – that is, hardly at all.

Off-leash bylaws need to be enforced Re: “Dog owners: get a leash and use it,” the Now, July 13. Oh boy, did columnist Tom Zytaruk hit a button for me. With more off-leash areas than ever before, there is no excuse for people to have their out of control dogs running everywhere. You see, I’m a dog owner and have been for more than 30 years. I usually have dogs that have come through shelters and rescues and some have had aggression issues due to lack of socialization. My current dog loves people and some other dogs but when a dog rushes up to him there can be a problem. As much as I’ve tried to explain this to people, I’ve been met with conversations similar to yours – and worse. My dog is not aggressive, he is under my control and will be fine with most dogs with a slow and supervised introduction. He is not fine with dogs charging him and jumping on him. I now live in Coquitlam but will be moving to Surrey in a couple of months. You are definitely right about the bylaw not being enforced. I even had an incident where someone told me if they weren’t going to enforce the law then why bother following it? I’m with you on putting pressure on the city to start enforcing the leash laws. Whew! Got that off my chest.

Infusion of 80,000 at Fusion Festival Huge crowds soak up the sun for two days of music, food and other cultural attractions near Central City An estimated 80,000 people ate, Tom ZILLICH danced and soaked up the sun durStaff Reporter ing the weekend Fusion Festival at Holland Park. The two-day event was held at the tower-surrounded Whalley site for a third year in a row. Crowds came to indulge in a wide variety of food, music and other offerings of the multicultural kind. Admission was free, and the sunny weather helped attract throngs of music-loving people. New this year were the heart-pounding rhythms of the Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Services’ powwow — a gathering place for festival-goers of all colours. Thirty pavilions were part of this year’s Fusion Festival, with new participants flying the flags of Fiji, Ghana, Nepal, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Trinidad & Tobago. Judges (including this writer) found the festival’s best-dressed pavilion to be the Poland entry, complete with dungeon-like feel and ample visuals and literature celebrating the country’s rich history. There was even a puppet show, and the pavilion hosts were extremely enthusiastic about their native country. For earning first place, organizers with Surrey-based Polonia (Polish-Canadian Sport & Recreation Club) were given free registration — an $800 value — to set up its pavilion at the 2011 edition of Fusion Festival. Second place in the contest (and the prize of a $500 discount on registration for next year) went to the massive India pavilion, with its turban-tying demonstrations, colourful clothing and art. The tourismfocused Jamaica pavilion earned third place (and $200 registration discount) for its good food and fine fabricated palm trees displayed out front. Bollywood film star Jimmy Shergill made an appearance on the main stage Sunday evening. He pumped up the crowd before Lehmber Hussainpuri entertained thousands with his infectious bhangra beats. Also Sunday, B.C.-based rock band The Grapes of Wrath reunited for a much-anticipated performance on the Coast Capital Celebration stage, and they didn’t disappoint. Over the course of the weekend, more than 100 performers took to the festival’s four stages. Other performance highlights included Saturday’s day-closing show by hip-hop trailblazers Arrested Development and, on the Chevron Stage, Peak Performance Project-winning rock band We Are the City. Red-Eye Empire, Krystle dos Santos, Mukutano, Daddy Roy the Messenger and Natural Flavas Band also performed. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

Bing cherries have skins that are usually not as dark and their flesh is substantially more pale, but they tend to be juicier. Bigaroons are somewhat heart-shaped and their firm flesh can either be red or yellow. When buying cherries, make sure that they are fully ripe. Cherries do not ripen on their own after harvesting. Also make sure to buy cherries that still have their stems attached. Cherries without stems tend to spoil faster, as the stem cavity will expose a part of the inner flesh. Cherries can be kept at room temperature but, as with most fruit, they

will always deteriorate more slowly if kept in the refrigerator. Store them in a container or bag away from strong-smelling foods, as cherries tend to easily absorb odours that will intensely affect their flavour. Cherries can be frozen whole or pitted, but freezing will affect their flavour quality and firmness. Frozen cherries will be best used for cooking. Pitting cherries can be done with either a knife (by cutting them in half) or with a cherry/olive pitter. These manual, mechanical devices look almost like a pair of hand pliers. One end has a round compartment that holds the cherry or olive, while the other end is equipped with a “spike” inserted into the flesh to push the pit through the opposite end. Cherries Jubilee is probably the

most famous cherry recipe, which consists of soaking cherries in a cherry liqueur, cooking them in a sugar syrup and igniting them with brandy. They are boiled down until the sauce thickens (more cherry liqueur can be added at this point) and then served over ice cream or cake. One of my favourite childhood recipes is one that my mother made for our family every cherry season. She calls it “cherry soup.” For this, whole cherries are cooked in a sweet, red cherry broth with curds made out of flour. Wildlife is everywhere deep in the jungles of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, where the Lower Kinabatangan River is estimated to have the largest concentration of wildlife in Malaysia. It is home to all eight species of hornbills found in Borneo, the legendary orangutan and the rare proboscis monkey. And, as we reach the shoreline, rhesus monkeys fearlessly board our boat hoping for a free meal. Our guide tells us that crocodiles also dwell along the 560-kilometre river.

Big game, big knives  continued from page 18 Recent studies have indicated that river crocodiles can reach a length of seven metres. I am disturbed by this information, but fortunately we are not searching for crocodiles; today, we are looking for a herd of elephants. We come to an area where the long grass has been crushed, possibly by elephants. We disembark, eager to get a glimpse of the herd, and carefully make our way through the dense brush following prominent elephant tracks. En route, our guide teaches us basic safety tips. Leeches, he tells us, hang off the ends of leaves waiting for an unsuspecting victim to pass by — and they are everywhere, wiggling and squirming! But no fear; he then advises us on how to effectively eradicate them. We continue to follow the elephant tracks for another hour, only to reach a muddy clearing. The tracks have now disappeared, the mud having been tracked through by numerous other animals, the latest of which are those of a herd of wild boar. On hearing that boars are extremely aggressive animals, we hurriedly terminate our search for elusive elephants and return to camp for dinner and to regroup for our evening hike. Once darkness falls, our guides supply us with flashlights and miner hats as we make our way out. One of our guides sits sharpening a knife with a half-metre-long blade. “Big knife!” I say nervously, trying to make conversation. “Big game we have here. As you have seen, there are pythons and wild

boar in the area,” he responds. I sheepishly back off. Perhaps an evening hike in the jungles of Borneo isn’t the safest choice. But it’s too late to back out now. Flashlights on, we jump over roots and rocks, maneuvering our way through the dense bush. Our guide reaches out in the air, rapidly moving his hands. As I begin to wonder what he is doing, he instructs us to shut off our flashlights and then opens his fists. Fireflies fill the air, adding their magical sparkle, almost like a reflection of thousands of stars glittering above us in the Malaysian night sky. Upon returning, I relax on the rustic balcony back at camp gazing out at Kinabatangan River. Lights flicker on the water and then disappear. I ask my guide what they are. He says they are reflections off the eyes of crocodiles! Thankfully, however, during our earlier river trip, the local crocodiles were as elusive as the elephants.

Langley’s Tuft rules the Rock

Numainville, the lone representative of the San Francisco-based Webcor Builders team, finished in two hours, 35 minutes and seven seconds, with the second and third place riders both within three-tenths of a second behind. Like Tuft, Sunday’s win was the second title in as many days for Numainville. In Saturday’s Maximum Collision women’s criterium, the Montreal cyclist won five of six prime laps and then prevailed in a sprint to the finish to take the top prize. Numainville’s winning time for the 30kilometre race was 40 minutes and 28.7 seconds. Andrea Bunnin, a rider on the local dEVo development team took second while Kirchmann was third. The men’s race lacked any drama as Tuft lapped the entire field to easily win the 60-kilometre race in one hour, eight minutes and 24 seconds. Jamie Sparling of Total Restorations Cycling was a distant second while Meier finished in third spot. The Tour de White Rock activities started Friday evening with the tortuous hill climb from the beach to the top of Buena Vista Avenue. The format had each of the riders make an assault up the 16 per cent grade with the top five advancing to a second and final race against each other up Buena Vista. In the men’s race, Routley held off veteran rider Andrew Pinfold to win the event. The women’s race saw Numainville post the fastest time in the first attempt but she could not repeat the feat in the final, placing third behind Kelowna’s Jessica Hannah and Lauren Roschen of Vancouver’s Westwood Cycle team.

Tuft claimed top honours in two of the three featured races in the 31st Annual Tour de White Rock, winning Saturday’s criterium followed by the crown jewel, the 134-kilometre road race Sunday. Tuft rocked the Rock with a runaway win in the criterium but Sunday’s road race was a much tougher test. Tired from his exertion in the criterium, Tuft admitted he did not get off to the start he wanted in the gruelling road race through the hills of White Rock. Fortunately for Tuft, his friends on the GarminTransitions ProTour team were there to lend a hand when he needed it. “The first few times up the climb I was hurting,” Tuft said in a release. “I was lucky Christian (Meier) was just jumping into every move. If I didn’t have him up there covering it would have been a bad day for me. It ended up being the perfect situation because I came around as the day went on.” Instead of taking part in the early breakaway groups, Tuft was content to sit back in the main peleton while Meier forged ahead with the early challengers. On the 11th and final lap of the long course, Tuft recovered from his early malaise and finally bridged the gap between the peleton and the lead group of Meier and rivals Will Routley and Ryan Anderson. When the circuit was reduced to six laps of the short course, the GarminTransitions duo made quick work of their rivals. A series of Tuft/Meier attacks chased Anderson from contention and Tuft then ran down Routley in the final

Final-hole birdie lifts Svensson to JWG title Adam Svensson was Michael BOOTH on top of the world Sports Editor Friday after winning the prestigious 2010 Callaway Junior World Golf championship at San Diego’s Torrey Pines Golf Course. The 16-year-old Grade 11 Earl Marriott Secondary student carded a four-day score of (73-71-66-72) 282 to edge out Argentina’s Jorge Fernandez Valdes by a single stroke. Canada’s Richard Jung was three strokes back in third place among golfers aged 15-17. “It’s so cool,” said Svensson, who won the B.C. junior crown earlier this month. “I actually thought I would be in contention just because of the way I was playing. My putting was better and I had a lot of confidence. I was hitting the ball really well but I had a couple of three putts on the first day. I putted better on the next three days but I think that’s because I teed off in the morning and played them before a lot of people walked on them.” The tournament was Svensson’s second visit to the Callaway Junior Worlds. He competed in the event last year but when he teed up for the first round Tuesday, he

realized quickly that his earlier experience would not help him much this year. “I’ve played in this tournament once before but it was kind of different this year just because there was no sun and the course was really wet,” he said. “The ball didn’t roll much and the greens were kind of bumpy.” Svensson fired two unremarkable rounds to open the tourney and then jumped into contention with a scorching 66 in Thursday’s third round. There was no shortage of drama Friday when the tournament championship was decided on the 18th and final hole where Svensson came through with a birdie to pull ahead of his Argentinean rival for good. “I had about a six-foot putt and I was really nervous,” Svensson said. “I was shaking a bit and it was a tricky putt because it broke left to right downhill. I was a good putt though — dead centre to the heart of the cup. When it dropped in I was really excited and proud to have won that tournament.” Svensson is back in Canada this week where he will be competing in the B.C. men’s amateur tournament in Castlegar.

New Prius is a smoother-running fuel sipper to reduce road noise. Standard safety features include seven airbags and front-seat “active” head restraints, which reduce whiplash in a collision. Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), electronic traction control (TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) are all standard. New touch sensors on the steering wheel switches are designed to improve concentration on the road, by showing audio or info displays on the instrument panel. Available options include a Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system which can retract seatbelts and apply the brakes if it determines a crash is unavoidable. In standard mode, driving the new Prius is not dramatically different from before, other than some extra oomph when the gas engine kicks in. Switching to EV-Drive mode, however, allows you to drive on battery power alone, at low speeds, for an extended period. A display panel monitoring fuel and energy consumption provides instant feedback on driv-

ing. While religiously following its best economy prompts, it registered better than 80 mpg (about 2.9 L/100 km) on a test loop recommended by Toyota. The new Prius does not allow its battery to drain completely, so you’re constantly looking for opportunities to recharge on even the slightest of downhill grades — it’s a very different way of driving.

The bright future is possible because Toyota continues to invest into green technologies – just witness the new generation 2010 Prius with its industry-leading Hybrid Synergy Drive. A bright light on the road to environmentally-friendly private transportation, Prius is the most successful hybrid-powered vehicle to date. This new generation car is another landmark. While other manufacturers may promise a better solution sometime in the future, Prius is a “here-today” answer for those who want to own and drive a cutting edge eco-friendly vehicle. Prius (Latin for “to go before”) has been around for more then 10 years and has more than a million owners worldwide, with 14,000 in Canada. The new Prius, slated to arrive at dealers in Canada this spring, provides even better fuel economy and performance. It’s quieter and roomier and it offers some new innovative features. A big change is its ability to run longer purely on electrical power. The driver can also switch back and forth between four driving modes, depending on how much power or level of fuelefficiency is desired. New options include a moon roof with solar panels that power a smart air-conditioning system and Intelligent Parking Assist, an automated self-parking system, for those who have never been able to master the parallel thing. Toyota engineers have extracted significant improvements in power (up 22 per cent) and fuel consumption (down seven per cent). Its new combined fuel highway/city driving consumption is estimated by Toyota at 3.8 L/100 km, which makes it the most fuel-efficient vehicle sold in Canada. Surprisingly, the new Prius actually has a larger capacity, 1.8-litre Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder gasoline engine. The extra torque it provides allows the car to run at lower engine speeds while cruising on the highway, which in turn saves fuel. In addition, an exhaust heat-recirculation system reduces heat waste by warming engine coolant faster during cold start-up. This not only improves fuel-efficiency, but also heats the passenger cabin quicker. On the electrical side of the Hybrid Synergy Drive engine, the inverter, motor and transaxle are smaller and 20 per cent lighter. A newly developed electronically controlled regenerative braking system has been adopted, with control logic optimized to enhance regeneration. The overall body “wedge” profile of the Prius hasn’t changed much. The most noticeable styling changes are its strong side character lines, which rise from front to rear. Dimensionally, its wheelbase and height remains the same, while its length has increased only slightly. Inside, there’s more rear-seat legroom and the cargo area has been slightly expanded due to an improved layout of the battery cooling unit. Vehicle collision protocol: what you should do

Whether you’re driving to work, running errands or heading up to the cottage, chances are that you will unfortunately be in at least one minor collision at some point in your life. Avoid becoming a nervous wreck by knowing what to do when a collision occurs. After you’ve been in an accident, experts

agree that you should remember to:
