❚HST/Builder says new tax will drive underground home renovation economy deeper
Under the table and bleeding Don’t get nailed by paying cash: it’s not worth the risk, builder warns
The president of a local Ted COLLEY builders’ association worStaff Reporter ries the HST will encourage a jump in people seeking cash deals on home renovations and repairs. Peter Simpson is president and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association, which represents more than 700 residential construction and renovation professionals. “We already have a burgeoning underground economy in the renovation industry and we think the HST will just drive it deeper,” Simpson said. “People don’t know what they’re getting into when they do cash deals.” Homeowners assume huge risks, he said,
when accepting an offer of renos or repairs without the proper paperwork. “If there are no permits or inspections and no WorkSafeBC coverage or liability insurance from the contractor, the homeowner is responsible for everything,” Simpson noted. “If the reno is botched, you have no legal recourse in court. The judge will say, ‘Where’s the contract?’ and if you don’t have one, you have no case.” If the contractor has no WorkSafe coverage and is injured while working on a home, the homeowner can be sued, he added. “Even if it’s just somebody cleaning your gutters, if he does a face plant and hurts himself, you’re on the hook for that liability. They’ve got to ask themselves is it really
worth putting yourself and your family at risk just to save a few bucks?” Simpson asked. He believes a permanent tax credit like the one offered last year by the federal government would go a long way toward killing the underground renovation market. Simpson said a 2.5-per-cent federal credit, combined with something similar from the province, would do the trick. “The homeowner would require receipts to claim the credit and that would encourage everyone to do it right. If consumers start saying no, it’ll put some of these renegade contractors out of business, but there’s got to be something in it for the consumer – a tax rebate.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

❚ NEWS ❚DELTA/Good news for pet owners
Council OKs five off-leash areas for dogs in North Delta Delta dogs will Jessica KERR soon have several Now Contributor off-leash areas from which to choose. Civic politicians have approved the establishment of 13 off-leash areas throughout the municipality – four in Ladner, four in Tsawwassen and five in North Delta. Four of the new off-leash areas – two in North Delta and one each in Ladner and Tsawwassen – will be fenced compounds, while the other nine will be marked with signs. All will include garbage cans and waste bag dispensers.
Delta council approved spending $33,000 to establish the off-leash areas. Another $70,000 for fencing will be considered for the 2011 budget. Ken Kuntz, Delta’s director of parks, recreation and culture, said the municipality and the parks and recreation commission looked at what other municipalities have done. “We certainly heard the same story from every single municipality we talked to and we talked to over 30 different municipalities, and that was simply that there was a great deal of apprehension in moving forward with
any solution and it really divided the community,” he said. “But regardless of the solution, or the application applied, the problems really didn’t materialize and everyone got on with the business of having some off-leash areas or some controlled areas and life was pretty good.” Kuntz’s report to council states using a designated off-leash area does not preclude dog owners from having responsibility over their animal. Kuntz said the off-leash areas should be up and running by September.

The Mustang rolled over several times, ejecting the driver from the vehicle and shearing off a fire hydrant. The driver was taken to hospital. Suspect in more trouble after threats
Bhandher faces life behind bars after jury finds him guilty of 2008 murder in Newton
A Burnaby man charged with robbery and extortion is in more hot water with the Delta police after allegedly calling the victim and threatening to kill him. Kelvin Chand, 23, was arrested at his residence in Burnaby on Saturday shortly after he allegedly called the victim and threatened him because he’d talked to police. At press time he was being held for a court appearance, accused of uttering death threats. Chand was arrested in North Delta and charged on June 15 for his alleged role in the robbery and extortion of a local man in the 6400-block of Scott Road. The victim reported that three men had assaulted him and demanded cash. “They basically beat him up to get his (banking) card and his PIN number,” said Paul Eisenzimmer, acting sergeant with the Delta police. Chand and another man were arrested and held for a show cause hearing. – Tom Zytaruk
A jury has found Raminder Singh Bhandher guilty of second-degree murder in the 2008 shooting of Tejvir Singh Bains in Surrey. Bains, 24, also known as Sunny Bains, was gunned down in Unit 1 of the Kwantlen Village townhouses at 12585-72nd Ave., where he lived, on Jan. 28, 2008, with his girlfriend and their young child. Bhandher, 30, was originally charged with firstdegree murder but the jury returned with its seconddegree murder verdict shortly after noon Monday. Bhandher’s lawyer claimed the shooting was in selfdefence.
Bains was shot four times. The court heard he was killed by two shots to the back. The jury began its deliberations at 6 p.m. Friday following a trial in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver that began on May 31. Bhandher faces the mandatory life sentence but the date he’s eligible for parole – between 10 and 25 years – has yet to be set. The jury recommended the 10-year minimum. He will appear in court on July 26 to fix a date for the sentencing hearing. – Tom Zytaruk

Police chopper nabs man after river chase Marine who’d confronted a man who was trying to steal stuff from a 58foot yacht. After the suspect pushed past the employee and jumped into an inflatable boat, the employee tried to stop him by grabbing its docking line and tying it to the yacht. But the suspect pulled out a knife, cut the line and took off downstream. RCMP Const. Curtis Brassington was patrolling over Surrey in the force’s Air 2 helicopter when he was called to the river.
He soon spotted the nine-foot-long inflatable dinghy near the Massey Tunnel and contacted the Richmond RCMP, who had two Mounties at the DFO office in Steveston. With their boat launched, Brassington followed the suspect to Westham Island, where he’d beached the boat and headed for the trees. With the DFO boat still miles away, Brassington landed the helicopter, followed the suspect into the bush and arrested him.

Businesses’ HST efforts may further bury Liberals InTheHouse
ViewPoint
now
The B.C. Liberals may learn the hard way that an old adage is true: Sometimes your best friends can Keith become your BALDREY worst enemies. I’m referring to the move by business groups to launch legal action against the initiative aspect of the anti-HST petition on the grounds that the legislation it purports to send to the legislature is unconstitutional. Their arguments may very well be accepted by a judge. Former B.C. Liberal attorney general Geoff Plant (a noted lawyer himself) recently wrote a detailed critique in the Vancouver Sun of the proposed initiative that seemed to demolish – on legal grounds – the idea that the petition’s proposed law could stand up in court. Plant argues the province lacks jurisdiction to arbitrarily scrap the HST, because it is a federal tax, not a provincial one. Vander Zalm hasn’t really responded to Plant’s arguments, but he and his supporters have launched their own court action, arguing the HST itself is constitutionally invalid. While Vander Zalm had a poor track record on constitutional matters when he was premier, he has impressively hired noted lawyer Joe Arvay as his counsel on this matter Of course, there is an ironic aspect to Vander Zalm’s own court action: it may very well ensure the future of the HST will remain cloudy for months, perhaps even years. If the B.C. Supreme Court gets involved, it may take a long time for the case to be heard, and then there’s the matter of appeals (this would likely go all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada). How likely is it, then, for the provincial government to do
anything – legislate an end to the HST, or send it to a provincewide referendum – while the matter is before the courts? I would suggest not very likely at all. But back to the business community’s legal challenge. If a judge does indeed side with the business groups, he or she will only inflame an already hot electorate. A legal dismissal of the petition would look like an arrogant slap-down of the more than 700,000 people who signed the anti-HST petition. And it won’t be the presiding judge who will incur the public wrath. Rather, it will be the business community and by logical extension, the B.C. Liberal government. Even before it swept into power in 2001, the B.C. Liberal party had very strong and obvious ties to the province’s business community. And since then, those ties have become entrenched in the public’s mind. The fact that companies contribute vast sums of money to the B.C. Liberals is not surprising and not a new development. However, it is the party’s avowed pro-business policies that make it hard for many people to distinguish where the interests of the business com-
munity end and where the interests of the B.C. Liberal government begin. Whether it’s chopping corporate tax rates, weakening employment standards, subsidizing a private power industry, easing regulations for resource companies or stubbornly refusing to raise the minimum wage (which now lags behind the one in Newfoundland, of all places), the B.C. Liberal government has made it clear where it hangs its ideological hat. So if the business groups – the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Forest Industries and the Coast Forest Products Association, among others — succeed in swatting the initiative down, the general public will view the result as a poorly masked manoeuvre by the B.C. Liberals. The last thing the government should wish for right now is something to further enhance the chances of a successful recall against its MLAs. But a successful court action by the business community could very well do just that. If the business groups were truly concerned about the anti-HST petition going forward, they should have launched their legal challenge at the beginning of the petition
process, not at the end of it. At the very least, the business community should have mounted its own counter-campaign against Vander Zalm if it was genuinely concerned the HST was better for the economy than not. As much as the B.C. Liberals fumbled their handling of the HST, so too has the business community bumbled along in its own dealings with the red-hot political issue. And as a result, its own belated response may simply help to further bury the very government it’s obviously trying to save. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C. City Centre landlords are fair and deserve better
Sonia Naza Surrey
When are people going to learn how to drive? The Editor, During the past few months, I have witnessed some pretty bad accidents. It appears that not everyone gets the message to slow down and pay attention – especially in Surrey. This past weekend, traffic was tied up at 150th Street and 104th Avenue thanks to some idiot I assume tried to run a light or didn’t pay attention while driving. It was a similar situation on July 2, only this time it was at 104th Avenue and 160th Street and it caused a nightmare for those exiting Highway 1 and those trying to get to Highway 1. Now this leads me to an incident where a lady attempts to make a right turn, stops to let a cyclist cross and gets rear ended. It happened cause the person behind her either didn’t pay attention or needed to get somewhere fast. I’m not saying I’m a saint and the world’s best driver. However, a line needs to be drawn in the sand for these drivers who believe in speeding up to beat the red or yellow light, driving under the influence, talking on a cellphone while driving (of which I have seen plenty of since the law came into place) and just being an idiot behind the wheel. To these people, I ask that, for heaven’s sake, use your bloody brain and slow down. Is that extra minute so important to you that you feel a need to put everyone else’s

life in jeopardy? We need more red light cameras in this city and in general. I hope Mayor Dianne Watts reads this and sets up undercover stings with the police in the city to nab these people and give them large fines. I think maybe the B.C. government should start charging fees to people who are proven guilty in major accidents and tie up police, fire and ambulance personnel on top of the possible ticket and insurance hike they will get. Better yet, maybe those guilty should confront the victim’s loved ones as to why their family member or friend died or was disabled for the rest of their life. Maybe this will get the message across.

The Editor, Re: “New city hall leaves some feeling ‘pushed around,’” the Now, July 2. I personally know these businessmen. If they say the value of their revenue property is $4.54 million and not the $3.5 million as offered by City of Surrey, I believe them. They are smart businessmen, not greedy or opportunist. These buildings are not run down as Mayor Dianne Watts claims – they are right next to the public library. They are just older buildings with long-term tenants. Vlassis Souvlaki Greek Taverna and The Hockey Shop have been there forever. Why? Because Dales Properties Ltd. knows that to keep long-term tenants, you don’t demand high rents. This is what Bernadean Hugo of Infoskills – who rented with Dales Properties Ltd. – found out when she found a location near Gateway station for twice as much. This area has older buildings too and some of them are run down. The highrise commercial complex Gateway Station Tower is currently the only new commercial building around (though more are being built) in that area. I believe Mayor Watts is way off when she implies rent is based on the “run down” stage in a “run-down area.” Landlords base their rent mostly on their own needs. They may have to pay a high mortgage on the buildings and, of course, it can be based on supply and demand. If you own the buildings outright, you don’t need to charge outrageously high rent and have the choice to either be a fair landlord or an unfair one.

Kerri Dobson has a dream. Two dreams, actually. One is to lose 40 pounds. The other is to see 40 European cities while losing it. In late July, the 21-year-old Surrey resident will embark on her journey with two friends, a backpack and a determination to fulfil both of her goals. “I have put on weight over the past couple of years and though I have tried to lose it, I am easily tempted by good food and I find it really difficult,” Dobson said. “I am using my trip as an opportunity to lose the weight. If you plan to lose 40 pounds, you may as well do it whilst travelling round Europe.” Losing weight while on holiday isn’t easy, but Dobson has a plan. “Money will be tight, so my meals will be light. I am staying away from fast food. Instead, I intend to take in local markets, with lots of fresh fruit, bottled water and maybe a little coffee to keep me full. Also, we will be doing lots of walking to save money and hopefully lots of swimming. I think the weight will drop off.” The trip starts in London on July 25. From there, Dobson and her two friends will go island hopping in Greece, then on to Ibiza and Barcelona, where the young women will be collected by bus and driven all over continental Europe, including Portugal, Italy, Germany and France. They’ll visit 41 cities in 90 days. The trip has been six months in the planning. Their transportation is paid for, and their accommodation will be basic. “We are using ‘Busabout’ – basically it is a cheap way to see Europe. The bus collects you from your hostel and delivers you to the next hostel in the next city. We have lots of day trips planned as part of our trip. For instance, we have day trips planned to Stonehenge, Versailles, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and more.” “I want to leave a pound in each city I visit!” said Dobson. To follow Dobson on her journey, or for more information, visit www.gokezza.com.

Fab felines in focus and other great reads
Curious Cats, by Mitsuaki Iwago. Terry PETERS Published by Chronicle Books, 96 CanWest News Service pages, $19.95. Acclaimed wildlife photographer Mitsuaki Iwago turns his camera lens on a different kind of animal in this collection of cat photographs. He has travelled all over the world capturing images of nature’s wonders but against all the amazing creatures he has seen it is the household feline that he loves most. Drawing from over 30 years of professional photography, Iwago has selected his favourite cat pictures. At rest, at play, relaxed or on the move, the cats explore the surrounding world with an insatiable curiousity. Cat lovers will enjoy every page as they share Iwago’s passion for these delightful creatures.
287 pages, $15.95. At a somber funeral service in an English country church things are getting strange. The recently deceased Mr. Ford has decided not to stay that way and struggles to rise from his coffin. This return of the dead sends the congregation running for the door except for one man. Mr. Bennet knows exactly what he is witnessing and is quick to find a means to separate the monster from its head. The polite society of 18th century England is turned upside down as zombies, not bad manners, become the most worrisome thing to deal with. In this prequel to last year’s favourite spoof, Pride and Prejudice and
Zombies, author Steve Hockensmith fills in the details on how the Bennet sisters acquired the necessary skills to fight the plague of undead. The concerns of whether the oldest daughter, Jane will be safe from the lecherous Baron despite her skill at slicing and dicing the walking dead make for a parental dilemma of the first order for Mr. Bennet. This story, unlike the previous release, is not based on an original Jane Austen novel, but it maintains the homage to the characters and the era while creating the nightmarish necessities of the horror genre. The hilarious contradiction of Austen’s world and the gore of a ‘B’ movie collide in this wildly twisted tale.
When Robert met Patti they were just kids
Just Kids, by Patti Smith, Harper Collins, 280 pages, $31.99. Patti Smith has had an enormous influence on rock music. Robert Mapplethorpe made a lasting impression on the world of art and photography. In 1967 they were two young people who had moved to New York in pursuit of their own artistic dreams. Their chance meeting and a later connection opened the doors to a lifelong relationship. From the beginning of her time in New York, Smith shares an unflinching look into her youth and allows us to be transported to the late ’60s with her. The detailed account of the hopes and aspirations of both artists makes for fascinating reading. From friends to lovers and back to friends Smith tells both their stories in intelligent and accessible prose that makes you feel that you’re participating in their artistic evolution. Hungry days and nights of discovery are described as their talents grew and the crossing of paths through the New York literary, music and art worlds saw them share experiences with an incredibly diverse group. Smith draws from conversations with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Janis Joplin, Sam Shepherd and many other influential people to bring to life this fascinating account. Their flames both burned with passion and when one was extinguished, the other remained true to their shared time together.
Images of harsh, stunning land
This Vanishing Land, by Dianne Whelan, Caitlin Press, 175 pages, $28.95. Few people have travelled by land to the northernmost point of Canada. In the spring of 2007 the frozen landscape of Ellesmere Island was the destination of a team of Canadian Forces soldiers, Inuit Canadian Rangers and one civilian, a photographer who would document their journey. Dianne Whelan was the first woman to join the Rangers on a patrol of Ellesmere Island and would be a part of a team that would be the first to ever patrol this route to its northwestern coast. Her account of this 2,000-km journey is both frank and inspiring. She includes not just her own thoughts and impressions of this rugged land but also comments made by different members of the team. The beautiful images of this harsh but stunning land are a credit to Whelan’s talent and perseverance. Trying to take photographs in -45C temperatures with howling winds buffeting you is something very few photographers would be willing to attempt. One of the patrol’s objectives was to erect the Canadian flag on Ward Hunt Island, which is starting point for many overland expeditions to the North Pole. Patrol leader, Major Chris Bergeron explains, “we want to put up a Canadian flag that will last a hundred years, so every time people come to the island they will say, Hey, this is Canadian land.” This is land that is important to protect and Whelan’s account will help gain a new appreciation for it.

❚ LIVING ❚FOOD
Rich comfort foods get low-cal makeovers Rocco’s Brownies (Makes 12 brownies) These brownies ring in at 53 calories each, and when you look at the ingredient list, you see why. Gone is the excess of butter, sugar, chocolate and flour of the classic recipe. The resulting brownies, however, don’t taste much like the classic, either. For best results, try to use the Truvia instead of the Splenda.
These are not Rocco’s Brownies — but they looked so good, we couldn’t resist showing them. count without a few tricks up his sleeve. That’s why Now Eat This includes a list of “can’t live without” ingredients, ParmigianoReggiano and garlic, as well as flavour-saving fat-free cooking techniques to welcome you to its light and low-fat world. Key to cooking are reduced-fat cheeses, sugar substitutes, wholewheat pastas, spices, lemon juice and more. Cauliflower is used
Ingredients: Non-stick cooking spray 11/2 c (375 mL) canned black beans, rinsed and drained 1/2 c (125 mL) unsweetened cocoa powder 1 tbsp (15 mL) espresso powder 3/4 c (175 mL) egg substitute 2 tbsp (30 mL) low-calorie sugar-free chocolate syrup 2 tbsp (30 mL) reduced-fat sour cream 1 tbsp (15 mL) unsalted butter, melted 24 packets (84 g) Truvia or 8 tablespoons (120 mL) granulated Splenda 1 tsp (5 mL) vanilla extract
instead of potatoes and egg whites or egg substitute are used instead of whole eggs or yolks. I see problems with the overall concept though. The idea here is that when you remove the fat and sugar from our favourite foods, you also remove the guilt. But is the reduced-calorie version of a food we love still lovable? Can you even call fettucini Alfredo fettucini Alfredo
Preheat the oven to 350F (180C). Spray an 8x8-inch glass baking dish with cooking spray. Combine the beans, cocoa powder, espresso powder, and egg substitute in the bowl of a food processor. Process until the mixture is smooth, about two minutes, scraping down the bowl halfway through. Add the chocolate syrup, sour cream, butter, Truvia and vanilla. Process until all of the ingredients are combined, about one minute. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, and smooth the top with a spatula. Bwake for 28 to 30 minutes, turning the dish halfway through the baking time. A toothpick inserted in the centre will come out with soft batter clinging to it. Let the brownies cool completely in the baking dish on a wire rack. Then cut into 12 squares and serve. Refrigerate any leftovers.
when it’s made with whole-wheat pasta, yogurt and starch-thickened chicken broth? There’s also no missing the fact that these foods aren’t all that easy to prepare. Cooking this way requires a serious commitment, brand-name ingredients, and turning a blind eye to the plethora of processed foods used to make all this diet fare. In my grocery store, I could
notfind several of the ingredients like whole-wheat panko, cocoa nibs, Vidalia onions and several of the low-fat bottled sauces called for in many of these recipes. Who is this book for? This is first and foremost a cookbook for the diet crowd. If you’re looking to drastically reduce calorie counts, why not give it a go. Otherwise, why bother?

“My goal for L. CHESTERMAN this book was to CanWest News Service take the foods we love — no matter how bad they are for us — and make them healthy and flavourful, something I really want to eat.” This is the first line you’ll see in chef Rocco DiSpirito’s latest cookbook, Now Eat This (Ballantine Books, $26.95), dedicated to classic American comfort foods with drastically reduced calorie counts. The idea here is three-fold: first, for the recipes to be healthy; second, low-cal; and, third, familiar as the sorts of food that pack on the pounds in their original form: Caesar salad, fried chicken, nachos, coconut shrimp, Philly cheese steak and brownies. Dispirito jumped onto the lowcal bandwagon after appearing as a guest chef on the U.S. weightloss reality show The Biggest Loser, where he was forced to cook with no sugar, no flour, no salt and barely any fat. Daunted at first by the 1,000 calorie-aday limit put on the contestants, Dispirito relied on flavour agents that are rich in flavour but low in fat, and cooking techniques like grilling and poaching and broiling that limited the calorie surge. Of course, even Dispirito can’t obliterate that brownie calorie

Low-cal, low-fat breakfast – or dessert OnCooking
Now that summer is here, many of us want healthy, low-calorie and low-fat meals or treats to maintain our swimChef suit bodies. DEZ This recipe is one of our favourites. We made it for breakfast just last week and our four-year-old said to me, “Wow, look Daddy, we’re having dessert for breakfast!” Enjoy.
Pineapple Muesli Yogurt Parfaits Makes four portions Preparation time: 15 minutes Bake time: 15 minutes Muesli ingredients 2/3 c large flake oats (160ml) 1/3 c bran flakes cereal (80ml) 1/3 c slivered almonds (80ml) 1/3 c unsweetened coconut (80ml) 3 tbsp wheat germ (45ml) 2 tbsp Splenda sweetener, granulated (30ml)
1 tbsp sesame seeds (15ml) 1 tbsp ground flax seed (15ml) 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (2ml) 1/4 tsp salt (1ml) 3 tbsp canola oil (45ml) Yogurt ingredients 2 398ml cans crushed pineapple (796ml) 1 750g container plain low-fat yogurt (750g) 6 tbsp Splenda sweetener, granulated (90ml) 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (2ml) Method: Preheat the oven to 400 F (200 C). Combine the oats, bran cereal, almonds, coconut, wheat germ, sweetener, sesame seeds, ground flax seed, cinnamon and salt in a mixing bowl. Drizzle the canola oil over this dry mixture and stir to combine thoroughly. Spread this mixture evenly on a small baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, stirring every five minutes, to ensure the mixture does not burn. Cool at room temperature on the baking sheet. This mixture will crisp as it cools on the bak-
ing sheet. Strain the canned pineapple in a wire strainer. Transfer the strained pineapple to a clean linen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze to remove the excess liquid. Combine the strained pineapple, yogurt, sweetener and the vanilla together in a mixing bowl. Assemble the parfaits in four 300ml parfait glasses or four 300ml brandy snifters as follows: In each glass, place one half cup yogurt mixture, then one quarter cup muesli, then another one half cup yogurt mixture, and top with a final one quarter cup muesli mixture. Serve immediately. The muesli and yogurt mixtures can be made ahead of time, but do not assemble them together until just before serving, to prevent the muesli mixture from going soggy. Childcare Canada would like to sincerely thank all supporters and participants in the first Walk for Water held on Sunday, June 27th at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park.
Because of your heart for global outreach, we will be able to provide water for 50,000 Haitians using sustainable methods. We will use funds raised through the event to install a water irrigation system, in partnership with a Haitian community, that will give them clean water and the ability to water crops. Our hope is to see this country better that it was pre-earthquake!

Manage allergies year-round to minimize seasonal symptoms
Runny nose, sneezLaura BREHAUT ing, itchiness, dark CanWest News Service circles under the eyes, wheezing, coughing and congestion. “Classic allergies have classic symptoms,” says Dr. Mark Greenwald, vice-president of the Asthma Society of Canada and associate professor at the University of Toronto. “People feel sick. Their whole concentration is affected. They call it hay fever because people actually believed at the time they were getting sick with some sort of infection.” According to a recent survey by Harris-Decima for Reactine, more than 50 per cent of Canadians believe allergies affect their overall quality of life. “First of all, if your nose is blocked or runny or you’re sneezing, you don’t sleep,” Greenwald says. “You feel ill. Sometimes, not ill enough not to go to work or school, so then what happens is this concept of presenteeism. You’re there, but you don’t have that edge, so you do feel dopey and on tests people didn’t respond as well as they should have. “Some people find it difficult to drive. Socially, they’re impacted. They don’t want to go out because their nose is dripping. They’re sneezing all the time, so people feel uncomfortable in public doing that. The effects are from the subtle and benign to actually bad funcwtioning.” The term “seasonal allergy” gives the
weed, or tree and fall mould,” Greenwald says. “The picture is continual. For example, you have dust mites, and we’re indoors more in the wintertime. You have that whole season with a dust-mite allergy and then before that has a chance to self-resolve or resolve because of interventions, you have your spring, summer and fall stuff, so you have a picture that’s basically perpetual.”
Tips to reduce impact of symptoms year-round
More than half of Canadians believe allergies affect their overall quality of life, according to a recent survey by Harris-Decima for Reactine. impression that people are only affected for part of the year. Trees pollinate in the spring, grasses in the summer and ragweed from late summer into autumn. In the transitional seasons, there’s also the possibility of mould allergy. “Seasonal doesn’t really describe it anymore; it can be a couple of seasons together, so you can have tree and rag-
Don’t compromise “First and foremost, don’t compromise your lifestyle. Don’t limit yourself, limit the condition,” says Greenwald. Create a sanctuary at home Deal with your environment at home first. “Get rid of the cat, get rid of the smokers, get rid of the dust mites so your baseline is good,” says Greenwald. “If you reduce your baseline, then your seasonal exacerbations won’t be as bad.” If you’re gardening or working outside, take your work clothes off as soon as you go inside, wash them and have a shower. Don’t carry the pollens into your home. When pets come in from outside, they act as the transport medium for pollens. “There are certain wipes that you can use to get that stuff off the coat of the pet,” says Greenwald. “Keep the cat out of the house or, if it’s not out of the house, keep it out of your bedroom. If it’s not that, at
least wipe it down and shampoo it.” When the warm weather hits and you’re tempted to open your windows, don’t, at least not in high-pollen areas. Plan your outdoor activities When planning outdoor activities, early morning, or evening in the spring, summer and autumn seasons is better. “As the temperature rises, it will pick up the pollens and distribute them into the air masses and wind channels,” Greenwald says. “So in the cooler times, when there are no air currents, there will be less pollens in the air by far.” Pay attention to health advisories “Take them seriously, because they will definitely increase the susceptible individuals’ degree of symptoms and may precipitate more serious reactions, so plan out your time,” Greenwald says. Take your medication early “If you anticipate you’re going to have problems, don’t curtail what you’re doing. Take your medication before you go out, before the season starts. Don’t reserve it for a rainy day. Use it properly, all the time. Use it throughout the season,” Greenwald says. Be proactive “Get it young, get it early and get it when it’s mild. Do something about it, whether it’s environmental, medication or permanent,” Greenwald says. Bronzed Canadians ready for U.S. test Canada’s expense. “The last time we played Australia in a big tournament was for the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics,” Stevenson said. “We were ahead of them in that game and they came back to beat us. This time they were ahead of us and we came back to beat them so maybe the tide is changing.” Canada went back to work later in the day in a showdown with China for at least third place overall. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when, with two outs, Sheena Lawrick brought home Lever from second base with a sharp single to left for the winning run. North Delta’s Jennifer Yee was on first when the play began and was amazed when the Chinese third baseman inexplicably chose to cut off the throw from the outfield to home plate. “I guess she didn’t realize what was at stake because she cut off the ball and tried to get me out at second base,” Yee said. “I was shocked at first because we all knew it was the winning run. I was just so surprised.” Lever’s run gave Canada the win and assured the girls from the Home and Native Land would bring home a medal from the World Championships for the first
time. The players celebrated madly on the field before regaining their focus for a semifinal match-up with Japan Friday morning. “We were kind of sad that we couldn’t celebrate Canada Day but getting those two wins and clinching a medal was definitely a good replacement for having a party,” Yee said. “We were very happy to be going to bed to get some rest instead of celebrating with the other teams who were already done.” Following a series of rain delays, the Canadians fell into a hole against Japan and never recovered. The defending Olympic gold medalists rolled to a 12-3 win, leaving Canada with the bronze medal. Japan later fell 7-0 to the U.S. in the gold medal game. Despite the loss to Japan, Stevenson said the Canadian program turned a corner in Venezuela. “This is really huge for the sport in Canada,” he said. “Softball is growing in Canada and we’re getting more and more young kids moving on to NCAA schools in the States. The better we do internationally, the more interest there is from college coaches to come up and scout our kids. The more kids get scouted, the more opportunities there are for them and they better they get as players. So winning this
medal is gigantic not just for today, but also for years to come.” Surrey softball fans will have a chance to see the newly minted bronze medalists in action this week when Canada plays a series of exhibition matches at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship tourney this week at Softball City. Canada will play the Washington Absolute Blast July 6 and 7 before beginning a four-game set with the USA Futures team July 8-11. Stevenson said many of the members of the U.S. team that won gold in Venezuela will not be at Softball City but the team facing Canada will provide a glimpse of the future. “The USA national team has a lot of veteran players while the Futures team that’s coming here has a lot of young up-and-coming players,” he said. “It’s quite likely most of the players we play this week will be playing for them at the next World Championships. The Futures team matches up very well age-wise with our team while the current U.S. national team is quite a bit older.” Yee added, “I don’t know who is all on that team but it doesn’t really matter. It’s still the U.S. and that still means something. We won’t take them lightly.”

Canada Day Michael BOOTH was a great Sports Editor date for the Canadian senior women’s softball team at the World Championships in Venezuela. And now, thanks to a couple of dramatic wins over international powers Australia and China, the Canadian team rolls into Softball City this week sporting shiny new fashion accessories — World Championship bronze medals. “We figure it was fate because we won them both on Canada Day,” said Harvey Stevenson, manager of national team operations for Softball Canada. “We actually used that as a motivator for those games. If Canada Day had lasted a couple of more days we might have done even better.” Fresh off a loss to eventual gold medalist USA in the double knockout playoffs, the Canadians rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three unanswered runs in the seventh to upend Australia 3-2. Surrey’s Melanie Matthews drove in Canada’s first run in the bottom of the seventh and then scored from first base on a Caitlin Lever blast to eliminate the Aussies from the tourney. The win was a big one emotionally as Australia claimed bronze in the 2008 Beijing Olympics at

Two Surrey players will be suiting up for Canada at the Pan American Softball Championships in Bogota, Colombia next month. Softball Canada announced its final 17-member roster for the event last week. The Canadian list includes Surrey’s Katelyn Bedwell and Olivia Hornstein. Also making the grade is White Rock Renegades pitcher Jocelyn Cater, a Grade 11 pitcher who will be playing with the senior women’s national team in exhibition play at the Canadian Open Fastpitch Invitational Championships at Softball City this week. The Canadiian selection process included regional evaluation camps in 2009, which led to an athlete pool named in December of that year. The players from the athlete pool were invited and participated in a selection camp last week in Brampton, Ontario. The Canadian Juniors will compete in Columbia in an effort to qualify for the 2011 ISF IX Junior Women’s World Championships.

The Canadian team includes Surrey’s Emerson Murray, a St. George’s grad who has accepted
a scholarship to Cal-Berkley for September. The United States beat Brazil in the gold medal game, leaving Canada and Argentina to battle for the bronze. With an overall record of 3-2, Canada has successfully qualified for a spot at the 2011 FIBA U-19 World Championships in Latvia.

golf report Canada vs Russia – peewee style
Taking his second win in three starts, this might have been his first true win on the PGA Tour. I say that because in his first, at Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament, some would suggest that Rickie Fowler gave it away. Then of course Rose blew up at the Traveler, shooting a 75 a couple of weeks back. But in the AT&T National on the weekend, many of the pros thought if he shot a 70, which was par on this very tough course, he would win. He did. Three took a shot at him but could not break him coming down the stretch. Ryan Moore, who finished second by one stroke, gets a big bonus: an entry into the British Open or as it should be called, The Open, at St Andrews in two weeks.
It’s still early in July but puck junkies can get a summer fix of their favourite sport with a peewee exhibition game between Canadian and Russian teams Wednesday evening. Russia is represented by the St. Petersburg Silver Lions, a club team that arrived in Surrey June 27. The team has been training with local players each day and playing a series
Lower Mainland Surrey, Delta, White Rock Regional Golf Guide
of five exhibition games. The grand finale of their Surrey stop, complete with flag bearers and anthems, will take place Wednesday (July 7) at 5:15 p.m. at South Surrey Arena. Team Canada is comprised of players from across the Lower Mainland. The roster includes five players hailing from local minor hockey associations. Surrey is rep-
resented by forward Jesse Lansdell while Semiahmoo Minor Hockey has four members suiting up — forwards Michael Regus and Davis Koch as well as defensemen Liam Fraser and Jake Keremidschieff. The Silver Lions will move on to Vancouver Island later in the week for a similar schedule of training and exhibition games.

If you don’t think the game is changing just look at the young golfers in the top 10: Rose, Moore, Charlie Wi, J.B. Holmes, Carl Pettersson, and so on. The only old guy who flashed up in the top 10 on this tough layout was Vijay Singh.

The Tiger Woods story continues. First, the good news. He is now playing a Nike ball, which along with some great driving, stayed in the fairway this past weekend, something he hasn’t been doing of late. In fact, he was hitting them out well over 300. That is the good news. The bad news: where it counts on the green and around the green, by his own admission was a failure.

So who will show up in St Andrews in a couple of weeks? The long straight hitting Tiger or an improved short game Tiger? I would suggest the short game is the one that needs to show up. Mind you, if the stories are true that the divorce is almost through and his wife Elin will receive $750 million U.S., he will have things other than golf on his mind.

SUMMER MORNINGS. NOW – SEPT 6
Alena Sharp, who is the leading Canadian on the LPGA Tour, wound up with a top 15 finish and $25,000. She was near the lead after the first two rounds. Once again Lorie Kane finds herself struggling week after week, collecting only $3,000. The Canadian Tour played in Edmonton this week, and it was great news for Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, even though he finished second. The young player has two seconds in a row on the Canadian tour and that is good enough to get him into the Wayne Gretzky Nationwide event. Dustin Risdon, with 267, finished ahead of Adam by four strokes and behind him was Derek Gillespie. Canadians finished 1, 2, 3 — nice job. Richmond’s Christine Wong won wire to wire in the BC Women’s Amateur Championship at Cobble Hill. Wong is also in the U.S Women’s Amateur this weekend. Making up our B.C. team going to the Canadian Amateur in Kingsville, Ont. in late July will be Wong, along with Jessica Wallace of Langley, and Soo Bin Kim of Port Coquitlam. Sue Kim is joining them, having been granted an exemption. Based on this talent I would say that B.C. has a good chance to win.
Enjoy the fine summer weather coming our way — at last. Phil

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

You don’t have to buy a new vehicle every three or four years if you take proper care of the one you’ve got. Freeman Young, president of Krown Rust Control Systems, offers these tips for keeping your automobile looking its best and performing well for many years: ❚ Have your car treated annually to prevent rust, preferably beginning soon after you buy it. ❚ If your car has already begun to rust, don’t despair. As long as it isn’t bad enough to require body work, a rust control chemical can still penetrate the rust, preventing further oxidization and stopping the spread of corrosion. ❚ Find an environmentally safe product, preferably one that has a hydrocarbon (oil) base. ❚ Insist on watching the technicians to make sure they do the job knowledgably and with care. (For example, they should spray the rust control product into hidden areas such as the top of the gas tank.) If they won’t let you watch, take your business where the service is better. ❚ Keep your vehicle clean and, during the winter months, salt-free; clean the wheel wells frequently with a power washer. ❚ Promptly touch up door dings, scratches and rock chips, which are opportunities for rust. More information on rust control and vehicle maintenance is available at www.krown.com or call 1-800-267-5744. — News Canada

❚AUTOMOTIVE ❚TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
❚DRIVING
BMW is leading the way Four ways to save money
One day, motorists everywhere may drive vehicles that communicate intelligently with intersections and each other. Premium German automaker BMW is big on driving joy — but they’re also keenly aware that there’s no joy in gridlock. With the goal of increasing owner enjoyment and decreasing fuel consumption, a special team within the company is exploring the possibility of making vehicles, roads and intersections work more closely with one another. The traffic lights in most major cities are old, outdated
and totally close-minded when it comes to changing behavior to optimize traffic flow. Modern, intelligent intersections do exist today — although they’re relatively rare. Rather than running a pre-set pattern, these ‘adaptive’ intersections scan up the road, analyze traffic speed and density, and make real-time changes to keep things moving. In fact, with little more than a few software tweaks to the program controlling five intersections on one ‘test’ street, BMW was able to cut travel time significantly by reducing
frequent and wasteful stops. The result? Considerably lower travel time and a big reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Furthering these goals, technology is emerging that can transmit vehicle speed and turn-signal position to the intersection ahead of time. This helps make even simpler work of calculating an optimal phase pattern to keep traffic moving. It’s all in the name of maintaining driving enjoyment while keeping an eye on the environment. www.newscanada.com
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has compiled some compelling data on why we should adopt safer, greener driving habits. The latest statistics are very telling and point to a whole new mindset in the way we drive. Studies show that these four driving techniques can reduce your fuel costs by up to 25 per cent: ❚ Accelerating gently; ❚ Following the speed limit; ❚ Anticipating traffic flow; and ❚ Coasting to decelerate.
