Diet plays huge role in risk as education program, conference aim to reduce the rate of heart disease among South Asians Heart disease in South Asians ❚ While heart disease is generally thought of as a disease affecting older people, South Asians have a high chance of getting heart disease at a younger age. ❚ Heart disease tends to be more severe among South Asians – it tends to occur all along an artery instead of just one or two spots in the artery. ❚ Rates of heart disease among South Asian women are as high as men. ❚ Many South Asian children have shown early risk factors. ❚ A strong link exists between diabetes and heart disease among South Asians. ❚ South Asians tend to have more fat around their abdomen, abnormal levels of cholesterol, high insulin, and high blood pressure. Tarsem Malhi, who is 44 and stays fit by running marathons, seems like an unlikely candidate for cardiovascular disease. His South Asian heritage put him in a higher risk category though, and last August he had to have unexpected openheart surgery. Malhi, who immigrated from India when he was 12, was told by hospital doctors that he had most likely had silent heart attacks that went unnoticed. After having open-heart surgery, Malhi completed the nine-week SunLife Financial Punjabi Cardiac Rehabilitation Education Program at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The program, which was established in 2008, is designed specifically for South Asians, offering them treatment in their native language. It was started in response to the large number of South Asians who suffer from cardiovascular related illness. TARSEM “The major eye-openMALHI/ er for me was the diet,” “The major Malhi said. eye-opener The program made for me was him realize that he the diet.” needed to change what he was putting into his body. “There is a huge difference between being fit and being healthy,” he said. The program at Surrey Memorial Hospital helped him to make better choices without forcing him to switch to Western food. “Being in the program taught me I can still consume the East Indian foods I have grown up with, I just need to change how they are cooked and what components are put into them.” Not everyone makes the transition to a healthier lifestyle easily though. “I think success is variable,” said Dr. Raymond Dong, a cardiologist at Surrey Memorial Hospital, adding some people have more support to make the change than others. “The hurdles we have to overcome are culturally specific,” he said. This includes lowering the amount of saturated fats in patients’ diets, and limiting the amount of fried foods. Fraser Health and Simon Fraser University are also helping to minimize the high rate of heart disease among South Asians. They hosted the CanadaIndia Cardiovascular Health Conference from June 19 to 23 to find out why South Asians have a high rate of cardiovascular disease, and to generate ideas for how to deal with the issue. The Canada India Network Society organized the conference, held at SFU in Surrey and BCIT.

❚COMMUNITY FESTIVAL
‘Resilient’ Whalley celebrates its good traits SURREY – The 12th Whalley Amy REID Community Festival attracted Now Contributor nearly twice as many people than it had in previous years. Bonnie Burnside estimated nearly 10,000 people attended the event throughout the day last Saturday. Burnside, president of the Whalley Community Association and manager of communications and special events for the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association, attributed part of it to the change in location. Previously held surrounding the Surrey Public Library, the event moved to the Central City Plaza and the parking lot of the North Surrey Recreation Centre. And another part of it was the Vancouver band Chilliwack, she said. See MORE PHOTOS, thenownewspaper.com The band had come out for the festival in 2007 but the weather didn’t fare as well that year. With the sun out this year, more came out for the performance, and to see the many other things this festival had to offer. The stage had numerous other performances, including a singer from Kwantlen Park Secondary, hip-hop dancers, Wheat in the Barley, All About Jack and more. The site was packed full of Surrey residents, young and old, taking in the many free goodies and activities. With more than 100 vendors, community groups, artists, crafters and more, there was much to see and do.
The Lions Club was on-site throughout the festival’s entirety: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and only twice did they have a five-minute break to stop flipping burgers on the grill. Cinemazoo Animal Agency Ltd. put on a show, bringing with it dozens of animals to share, including a 75-pound tortoise, boa constrictors and more. There was a bouncy castle, balloon animals, free snow cones, free cotton candy, self-defence demonstrations and a train ride. “We had such a good mix,” said Burnside. “Everything was just so high quality.” She said the whole idea is that this is a community festival. “I really feel that the community felt welcomed to it. Everybody was just enjoying it.” The mandate from the beginning was to promote community pride, Burnside added. “People who live here and people who work here, people who own property here and own businesses here, they know how great the community is. “A lot of times we forget it because we hear these negative things that happen. “You know, negative things happen in every community but our community is very resilient and having an opportunity to come out and see all of the things that are taking place in your neighbourhood, it’s just a great feeling.” It’s great to see the community’s businesses and organizations connecting with each other, Burnside said. “And then the community connects with each other, and that’s what really gets exciting.”

Woman strangled, stabbed A woman was strangled Tom ZYTARUK and stabbed by a mugger Staff Reporter while walking home in Whalley just after midnight Saturday. The attack happened at about 12:45 a.m., on 132A Avenue near 109th Street. “The suspect attempted to strangle the victim before stabbing her and stealing her purse,” said Surrey RCMP Insp. Steve Wade. She managed to break free and the mugger ran off. When the victim, age 48, got home her son called police, who, being nearby on an unrelated call, were at her house within a minute. Shortly after that, they arrested a 48-year-
old man a few blocks away. “The victim’s purse was located in his possession,” Wade said. The victim’s injuries weren’t life threatening. A few hours earlier, at about 10 p.m. Friday, a 25-year-old Langley man was beaten and stabbed by four men near the corner of 135A Street and 108th Avenue. “The victim, who is known to police, was transported to an area hospital where he is in critical condition,” Wade said. His attackers had not been arrested by press time. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Relieved family welcomes banged-up lawn jockey back home Joan came to the Now last Thursday hoping to get some help in finding Sam. Their story ran in Friday’s paper. Surrey firefighter Rob Murphy saw it and called the Davis home that evening to say he had Sam at his place. “I was driving my kids to school the Monday after it was stolen and I saw it by the side of the road at 190th Street and I think it was 61A Avenue,” Murphy recalled. “I dropped the kids off and stopped to pick it up on my way home. Grant de Patie’s killer back in jail after brief stint of freedom ity relations and training for the national parole board, said the board imposed “the most restrictive set of conditions” it could possibly impose on Pratt for his statutory release. He was required to stay at a halfway house and wasn’t eligible for any leave privileges such as weekend passes. Pratt was also required to receive psychological counselling from a psychologist or elder to “address unresolved emotional issues,” to participate in community-based substance counselling and or programming to
address mental health, substance abuse and violence, abstain from alcohol and drugs and not associate with anyone involved in criminal activity or substance abuse. He also was not allowed to have direct or indirect contact with De Patie’s family. Alain Charette, spokesperson for the Correctional Service of Canada, said Pratt is back in jail and a parole officer will now have 30 days to decide what will happen. Pratt could be returned to the community under the ori-
ginal conditions imposed by the national parole board or, if the parole officer decides he should remain behind bars, the matter would have to go back to the national parole board for a decision. “We will look at the facts and make a well-thought decision on this situation with the new facts we have and based on that the future course of action will be determined,” said Charette. Doug De Patie, Grant De Patie’s father, told the Province Pratt going on the lam was “a letdown.”

Meet our newest millionaire SURREY – Surrey has Ted a new millionaire. COLLEY Staff Reporter Venancio “Benny” Lachica, 76, of Cloverdale, won a cool million bucks in last week’s Lotto Max Maxmillions lottery. Lachica said he has played the same numbers in various lotteries since 1970. He’s won small prizes before, $10 here and $10 there, but never a major prize until last Friday. “This time I was very surprised. I had to call my wife,” Lachica said Monday from the B.C. Lottery office in Richmond.
He said his son injured his shoulder and he drove him to Langley Memorial Hospital for treatment in the emergency room. While waiting, Lachica bought his winning ticket from a vendor there. Now, he has to decide what to do with his newfound fortune. “Charity begins at home so I have to think of my five sons. I will share this with them and some relations. We also have to think of ourselves. I think some travel, travel around the world and maybe take our grandsons with us when we travel.” tcolley@thenownewspaper.com

According to court records, 27-year-old Ravinder Singh Binning is scheduled for trial on April 19, 2011 on counts of dangerous driving, impaired driving, failing to provide a sample, willfully resisting arrest, flight from a peace officer and assault of a peace officer in connection with an incident in Surrey on March 15, 2009. Last week the Surrey RCMP charged Binning with two counts of dangerous driving causing death, one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and failing to stop at the scene of the crash. Binning is expected to appear in Surrey provincial court Wednesday for a bail hearing. Dilbag Badh, 61, and his wife Bakshish Badh, 60, were driving home from their daughter Rupi’s engagement party when their BMW was rear-ended at high speed by a white Acura TL that had apparently been racing with a black Camaro. The crash happened in the 8500-block of 128th Street, at roughly 1:30 a.m. July 12, 2008. The Badhs’ BMW slammed into a telephone pole while the Acura slid on its roof for 100 metres or so before the driver and his passenger bailed out. Varinder Badh, who was in the BMW

Many of them were wearing black T-shirts with a photo of the dead couple on front, with the caption “vehicular negligence = murder.” Varinder read a statement of behalf of the family. “It is a bittersweet day for us,” she said. “The RCMP stuck with this case, but it’s a harsh reminder of that fateful night... We are devastated by the event that has forever cast a black cloud on our lives. “Our mom and dad deserve justice,” she said. The police would not comment on the speed-racing aspect of the crash, if more arrests are expected, or what break led to Binning’s arrest nearly two years after the fact, saying the matter is now before the courts. “The investigation continues,” Insp. Bob Couture said. Binning has also had other driving-related run-ins with police. tions on projects. Scott and the JCCABC’s treasurer Gloria Bailey attended the forum to figure out the best way to apply for the grant as the association has had trouble accessing public funds in the past due to the association’s small size, Scott said. There will be a maximum of $23,000 given in each of four categories: economics, education, family and community. The program is about Canadians embracing “intercultural understanding,” according to Kim Angel, executive director of the Surrey Foundation. The projects that are chosen to receive the grant money must be completed by Apr. 15, 2011, but they have the potential to benefit Surrey for years to come. Sustainability is one of the factors that the projects will be judged on, according to Angel. The Surrey Foundation is “going to be working closely with the organization that is selected,” she said. The Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia provided the funding for this project. The organizations that will receive grant money will be announced Sept. 30, 2010.
City still mum on fraud probe The investigation continues into allegations of fraud lodged against a former City of Surrey employee who was fired in February from the planning department. “There’s not a whole lot we can say until everybody gets interviewed and all the documentation gets audited,” Mayor Dianne Watts said Monday. “I don’t expect to be able to say very much for quite a while yet.” – Ted Colley

Are big changes to our public education system just around the corner? Speculation is Keith growing in the wake of the B.C. BALDREY Liberal government’s fight with the Vancouver school board that something new is coming. Certainly, the B.C. Liberals have spent years talking about the need for change in the K-12 system. Pretty well every throne speech contains language suggesting significant change is on the way. But aside from the introduction of full-day kindergarten, nothing particularly revolutionary has occurred in the education system. The Liberals made a big fuss unveiling such things as the “learning roundtable” and “teachers’ congress” but they don’t seem to have had much lasting impact on things. And now a new slogan – “21st century learning” – will soon be introduced, and I wonder whether some serious alterations to the education system will accompany it. For possible clues on what may be coming, I dusted off this year’s throne speech and re-read the section on public education. Certainly, the language in that speech does suggest something is in the works. “Government will take steps to renew and revitalize education,” the speech stated, adding that a “new emphasis will be placed on parental involvement.” The speech also stated that “new forms of schools will be developed to provide greater choice and diversity.” I suppose these promises can

be read as so much empty government rhetoric. On the other hand, given the evident frustration over the conduct of the Vancouver school board the language can also be seen as suggesting provocative change. Part of the backdrop here is the often testy relationship between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Liberal government. Gordon Campbell is married to a long-time former school principal, and anyone who knows a school principal knows the frustrations many of them feel when it comes to dealing with teachers (in terms of the rigid control the BCTF exerts over the workplace). So he’s had years to become familiar on that front. Another important factor to consider here is the recent report by the province’s comptroller-general on the Vancouver school board’s financial situation. Political opponents of the government (most notably Vancouver school trustees themselves) have dismissed the report as a meaningless exercise that revealed nothing new. But those who view that report only as it pertains to school trustees may be missing the larger picture. Comptroller-general Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland portrays the Vancouver school board as operating within a governance model that is largely controlled by the employees who work for it (i.e.
teachers and CUPE support staff workers). As a result, flexibility and the ability to change policies are greatly hampered. While there has been a lot of attention paid to the war of words between Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and VSB chair Patti Bacchus, a key phrase from the minister has been overlooked. She has talked about the need for a new “governance model” and how she will develop one soon. A new model is going to have a more profound impact on our system than closing a few schools or squabbling over a school board’s budget. So what, exactly, is the B.C. Liberal government up to? Is it about to do an end run around the BCTF and CUPE by setting up these “new forms of schools” with direct parental involvement? Is it about to take the first steps toward creating a new parallel education system? One clue may be what’s going on in England, where the new coalition government is embarking on a massive restructuring of the country’s education system. There, the Swedish model of so-called “free schools” (where parents and organizations set up their own school with government money) is being implemented. Will we see “free schools” set up on a trial basis in a few school districts? It can be argued that the
B.C. Liberals, given their very low standing in the polls, do not have the political credibility or muscle to carry out big changes on any front. But they wouldn’t be the first government to go down swinging over an issue it considers important enough. Oh, and have I mentioned the BCTF will soon enter negotiations for a new contract? The teachers’ union has said it won’t accept a wage freeze like other public sector unions, so a fight is brewing on that front as well. Perhaps that’s the one thing – a contract battle with teachers — that won’t change in education. But it sure seems likely that “21st century learning” means other changes are on the way. Goal of urban density in sight
ness closer to the city than ever, because of the reduction of suburban sprawl. Want a walkable community? An arcology has no roads, just elevators and possibly an internal tram. So far, no one has built one of these mega-structures, although coming up with plans for them is a favourite project of architecture students. My question is, do we actually need to build an arcology from scratch, or should we simply lump together all those prodensity ideas, give them each a nudge, and let our arcologies grow up over time?
“With the right supports and the right economic conditions, it isn’t hard to envision a future in which most Lower Mainland residents live within walking distance of grocery stores, libraries, parks, movie theatres, offices and workshops.
With the right supports and the right economic conditions, it isn’t hard to envision a future in which most Lower Mainland residents live within walking distance of grocery stores, libraries, parks, movie theatres, offices and workshops. If the price of driving is high enough – either through government pricing or through the rising cost of oil – giving up a car or two becomes an attractive option. An arcology shouldn’t be a multi-billion-dollar project forced on a city, but it could be a goal for many communities, or parts of communities, to pursue. The perfect city is a constantly moving target; we’ll never build our way to utopia. But we can build better if we have a utopian goal in mind. The Editor, Re: “Social media’s banality is Clifford Olson’s fault,” the Now, June 18. Oh, I remember the days well. I too was raised in Vancouver. I’ll be 62 this September. I have related many times to my children how my cousin and I (we were eight years old) would get on the bus at Renfrew, for seven cents, and go to Second Beach in Stanley Park. We would set our towels near the concession stand and head for the salt water pool. Our $1 allowance went a long way, since we could get a plate of fish and chips for about 50 cents and an all-day sucker, shaped like a horseshoe, for five cents. By 6 p.m. we would gather our stuff and head back home – never a care in the world. We knew that if for any reason we needed help, we could turn to any adult for assistance. So, what went wrong? Not only was it the likes of Clifford Olson, but I believe our society adopted the “I don’t want to get involved” attitude. Nowadays it seems protecting your children equates to isolating them. Think about it – in our day, everyone knew everyone for at least a five-block radius. Now, we barely know who our neighbours are. I honestly believe we Boomers had the best era in which to grow up. It was exciting – yes, we broke the shackles of rigid constraint, resisted archaic rules and regulations, fought for equality – and we talked to each other face to face. I must give credit where credit is due – these kids today have the fastest thumbs in the universe.

PainfulTruth
Sprawl is out. Urban is in. A graph showing the average lot size in the Lower Mainland would show lots shrinking year by year. Condos and townhouses are increasMatthew ingly common, even in CLAXTON places like Langley and Abbotsford, once the refuges of lawn-loving suburbanites. We’re doing this at least partly by necessity. Land, as some political philosophers have pointed out, is different from other commodities. They aren’t making any more of it. They certainly aren’t making any more around Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, where between mountains, river, ocean, and the ALR, the only choice is how fast we will densify. A dozen streams of thought are coming together in the new urbanism that has many followers in the region. The 100mile diet. Walkable communities. Bike lane networks. Light rail. Bridge tolls. Vertical farming. Radical levels of waste reduction. Road pricing. Complete communities. So why not call this what it is? Put all of this together and it comes close to an attempt to build an arcology. The arcology is an idea that’s more than 50 years old, but it’s always been on the fringes. Architect Paolo Soleri invented both the word and the concept. The idea is simple: cities are dense, so they use less energy per person. It takes less asphalt and energy to pave the streets used by 1,000 people living in Vancouver’s West End than it does to pave roads for the same number of people spread out over several hundred acres in a rural area. It also paves over less potential farmland or natural area. So Soleri suggested ramping it up, making hyper-density and savings of energy the guiding principles for creating new cities. Many people have envisioned arcologies as buildings so large they qualify as cities. The ideal is to create a single urban core, maybe as small as a few city blocks, that includes living space, work space, recreational facilities, and possibly even food and energy production. A heavy emphasis on recycling water and conserving energy through smart architecture are also key features. The other important thing to remember is that an arcology isn’t meant to be a prison. Indeed, it’s meant to offer a higher quality of life, with parkland and wilder-

Electronics in ditch shows need for new way
The Editor, Another drive to work and another three or four televisions and computers on the side of the road or in the ditch. This is what we get for our $40 environmental fee every time we buy new electronics. This fee was introduced to ensure the “hazardous” metals that make up these electronics are properly dealt with. Yet these are not a blue box item, and every electronic unit has to be returned to a specially designated depot, by the owner. So the choice is simple, dump it on the side of the road or pay the gas and find the time to dispose of it officially. What galls me is that I can pay a five-cent environmental fee on a pop can, and if I return it, I can get five cents back. I can return a used car battery, and get $5 back. So why cannot our environmental ministry see fit to provide as much as a $5 “return it” fee for electronics when they have designated these electronics as dangerous to the environment? If this could be done, our local shopping cart crews would have our roads and ditches cleaned up in no time. I figure if our environmental ministry can start this electronic recycling program, then they should also get with the program.

Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship
Umpires a team, too The Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship kicks off July 5, and 36 of some of the best under-19 and 16-and-under female fast pitch teams in North America will soon be testing their skills in elite competition.
PUBLIC NOTICE
COMMUNITY CHARTER S.B.C. 2003 CHAPTER 26 NOTICE OF INTENTION TO SELL CITY LANDS
But players won’t be the only ones on the field looking to sharpen their edge. More than 30 umpires are also set to hit the diamonds at Softball City and Cloverdale Athletic Park for the week, and the Canadian Open Fastpitch is the perfect tournament for them to ramp up their game.
Pursuant to Sections 26 and 94 of the Community Charter S.B.C. 2003, Chapter 26, as amended, the City of Surrey hereby gives notice of the intention to dispose of the following City lands: Civic Address 281 m2 portion of surplus City land from 13140 – 113B Avenue.
“It’s just a heightened tournament,” said Keith Hazel, umpire in chief (UIC) of the Futures and Showcase tournaments. “The coaches and the players are very intense.”
Legal Description Lot “A” (BE12939) Except: Part Dedicated Road on Plan BCP45094 Section 9 Block 5 North Range 2 West New Westminster District Plan 17410 Property Description The property is an isolated portion of land containing 281 m2 that results from a northerly realignment of 113B Avenue. It is currently zoned Single Family Residential (RF) Zone and designated Urban in the Official Community Plan. The property is being sold to an adjoining owner for consolidation and development purposes under Project 7906-0301-00.
Because the tournament attracts top teams from all over Canada and the U.S. as well as a team from Peru that is expected to compete, the level of play is higher than what officials usually find at provincial and even national championships, according to Hazel, and that makes it attractive to umpires looking to hone their skills.
Purchasers 648744 BC Ltd./NSD Holdings Ltd./Apex Global Trading Inc.& AHW 9009 Holdings Ltd. Nature of Disposition Fee Simple.
“If you play ball against a D pitcher all the time, you’re not going to get much better,” said Hazel. “An umpire isn’t going to get much better if he does D ball all the time. He must do C ball, B ball, A ball.”
Selling Price FIFTY FOUR THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS ($54,450)
Hazel will be in charge of between 25 to 30 umpires officiating 150 games over the seven-day tournament.
It’s a daunting task, but after 41 years of wearing the umpire’s blue uniform – including 22 as an international official and many years of acting as UIC at high-level tournaments like the Canada Cup – Hazel is more than up to the challenge. Drawing up a schedule, he tries to make sure every umpire gets equal time behind the plate and at each of the bases and that teams get a variety of officials to keep things fresh. But mentorship among officials is important too, so Hazel pairs seasoned umpires with younger ones, and throughout the tournament, every game will be watched by one of four deputy UICs – all international umpires – who will evaluate the game from an officiating perspective and give the umpires feedback. For Hazel, mentorship is essential if younger umpires are going to become the best they can be. “If we don’t help them, they’re going to fall by the wayside,” he said. “It’s no different than a 19-year-old athlete who’s going to drop the sport unless some coach keeps mentoring and inspiring her.”
That approach combined with a history of hosting elite tournaments like the Canada Cup has earned B.C. a reputation for consistently turning out world-class umpires.

anyway, looking for a call to go their way next time, so umpires need to be thick-skinned as well a sharp. “You have to be outgoing and have a personality that can absorb a beating,” said Henning with a laugh. “The key is to remember that they’re yelling at the uniform and not the person inside of it.”
For the July 5, 6 and 7 games against the Washington Absolute Blast, officials will use a three-umpire system while the games against Team USA on July 8, 9, 10 and 11 will see four umpires on the field – an international standard. As an international umpire of 22 years’ standing, Henning says the opportunity to officiate international events like the marquee series are invaluable for elite umpires. “You gain experience by working top-level softball,” he said, “and that’s what we’re talking about here.” Since umpires are often said to be only as good as their last game and even their last call, that opportunity is as important to seasoned officials as it is to younger ones. “Players and coaches and spectators don’t care if you’re a level one, two, three, four or five, or internationally rated,” said Henning. “What they care about is a particular call at a particular game.” Even when umpires make the right call though, he says, coaches and players sometimes give them grief

Artist Debra Gow and husband Wayne Wawrenuik at Gallery 68, new to the Clayton Heights area. “I think people who walk by here are kind of blown away by the fact there’s an art gallery and studio down here,” Gow said. “They really don’t expect it in an area like this.”
‘68’ just great for artist Unique live-work strip of Clayton Heights inspires couple to open an art gallery ness three years ago, and lives upstairs with his family. “The zoning is brilliant,” O’Neill told the Now. “I used to live and work in Toronto, and this kind of thing is quite prominent there. What they’ve done here is really forward-thinking.… I’m surprised more businesses don’t open here.” City planners are encouraged by the opening of Gallery 68, hoping more small-scale businesses follow suit — hair salons, craft stores, bakeries, shoe-repair shops and the like. The RF9S zoning, according to a city report, “fills the gap between the more restrictive homebased business regulations contained in Surrey’s zoning bylaw, under the ‘home occupation’ provisions, and the full-scale business which must be located within a commercial or industrial area.” Last December, the owners of Gallery 68 moved from a townhouse complex just up the street. Parents of two adult children, they needed a bit more living space and, through their realtor, learned more about the special zoning along 68th Avenue. “We weren’t sure about it at first,” Wawrenuik said. “But we made an offer and, about a week later, I was driving home from work and it occurred to me: Instead of a rental suite, why

If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident and are disabled from working at your occupation, you may qualify for a weekly wage indemnity as part of your contract of automobile insurance, even if you have been found at fault. There are several requirements for eligibility, including making an application to Employment Insurance. Once your claim has been accepted, you may be entitled to a maximum of $300.00 per week. In addition, ICBC will provide certain rehabilitation benefits including physiotherapy and sometimes massage therapy.

don’t we do an art gallery down there, because she (Gow) has been painting all her life, and teaching. “So it was my idea, and she seconded the motion,” he added with a laugh. On the weekend of May 28-29, a grand-opening event attracted a couple hundred people to Gallery 68, a venue for Gow’s colourful acrylics, collages and watercolours. “A number of people came saying that curiosity got the best of them,” Wawrenuik said. “An art gallery in the basement of a home? That’s pretty unique.” Wawreniuk, who runs a construction-design company, helped create the gallery space, blessed with versatile lighting to help Gow paint and showcase her work, and that of other artists. “Now I don’t have oodles and oodles of paint and papers taking over the house,” Gow said. “It’s perfect for me, because in the townhouse where we were before, I took over the whole kitchen and dining room. Ask Wayne, he’ll tell you. This is very nice. Now I can close the door and have everything in this space, and create.” Gallery 68 is located at 19141 68th Ave. Online, view works at www.debragow.com. tzillich@thenownewspaper.com

Gow lives with her husband, Wayne Wawreniuk, in the suite above the sub-ground gallery, new to the Clayton Heights area. This four-block strip of 68th Avenue, between 188th and 192nd streets, is home to a relatively unique live/work zoning that encourages “small-scale, low-impact businesses integrated into the residential community.” It’s the largest such RF9S-zoned area of Surrey, with similar, smaller pockets elsewhere in the city, including Rosemary Heights. A pair of signs indicate the entrance to Gallery 68, which, from the sidewalk, is pretty much hidden from view. “I think people who walk by here are kind of blown away by the fact there’s an art gallery and studio down here,” Gow said. “They really don’t expect it in an area like this.” Two blocks away, NT Tailor has opened in a similar space, while My Chiropractor is located still further to the west. ‘Living Legend’ book about PICS founder
Two authors have collaborated on A Living Legend, an “engaging social and spiritual authorized biography” based on the life of Charan Gill. A book-launch event, held Monday in Newton, introduced the writers, Dr. Gharib Singh Pannu and Devinder Kaur Chattha. Originally from India, Gill is the founder and CEO of Surrey-based Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society (PICS). “Charan’s life represents his experiences of empathy and kindness across a multicultural population,” said Pardeep Sahota, the society’s director of communications. “His mission as a social and community activist has always been to help the CHARAN GILL less fortunate and underprivileged groups of society.” Last month, Gill was named one of Canada’s top 25 immigrants, as voted by readers of Canadian Immigrant magazine.

Lake Mohave a cool retreat from heat of Sin City As Nevada’s scorching desert sun MCBEATH soaked into my shoulders and back, I tin- Chris Now contributor gled all over at the prospect of plunging into the cool Mohave waters. And with only desert hills, the scent of sagebrush and a family of bighorn sheep for company, I inched forward until — swoosh, giggle, splash — the heat of my naked body met its chill factor. But within minutes, I was back aboard the houseboat, sitting atop the slide and ready for the next descent! After a few days in the ever-morphing, sensory-overloaded Las Vegas, this was antithesis absolute. And getting here had been half the fun.
The adventure began on the Colorado River at the foot of the monolithic Hoover Dam. A Black Canyon rafting trip is the only way to view the dam’s awe-inspiring 247square-mile surface from such a humbling perspective. As the 30-passenger motorized craft started its journey down river, the vivacious crowd had grown quiet, obviously pondering the enormity of the dam’s structural engineering. Beyond it, Lake Mead is the largest man-made lake in the United States, extending 110 miles and holding some 28.5 million acre-feet of water. Within minutes, though, the vistas changed. Reinforced concrete walls gave way to nature’s own — canyons that

towered some 2,000 feet up into the sky, rock crevices steaming with near-boiling spring waters and an array of anomalous tropical vegetation. Along the rock faces were petroglyphs left by the Southern Paiute and Anasazi Indians who once settled here, as well as large brass rings embedded into the rock. Early European settlers had used them to winch paddlewheelers through the river’s turbulent waters. Then there are the osprey nests, great blue herons, eagles and big horn sheep which scramble effortlessly over the stunning volcanic rock formations that drop without remorse into the water. The rafting trip through Black Canyon ends at Willow Beach Harbor. Once the transfer point for workers on the Hoover Dam, today it is a backwater marina for fisherman as well as the transfer point to buses back to Las Vegas. However, with a little planning, the best of your desert vacation is yet to come. This is where to catch a boat-connector to Lake Mohave and an even more exhilarating ride down the Colorado River as it opens up to reveal rolling desert hills west across Nevada and east into Arizona, and the crystal-blue waters of Lake Mohave just 30 minutes later. Our 50-foot houseboat had already been moved from its home base at Cottonwood Cove Marina, and was anchored at a secluded bay beach alongside a zippy 18-foot ski boat and various water toys. A hot tub and water slide were part of the houseboat package, as were all the comforts of a modern, floating home. Even the fridge had been stocked to order. The contrast of where we had been just hours before, to where we were now, was startling. First was the space — vast expanses of water, sand and sky. And nothing else. Then there was the silence — not even a soft buzz of an insect. And then came the clarity of a star-filled sky, brighter and inkier than we had ever seen. By day, we explored the fingerling backwaters of the lake where catfish, gar and soft-shell turtle hung out, cruised the shoreline for wild burros and mountain sheep and walked between kreosite bushes, barrow cacti and arrow weed, tracking the evidence of desert creatures that only awakened in the cool of night — cougar, coyote, lizards and snakes. Even if house-boating isn’t your thing, the Cottonwood Cove complex offers numerous lakeside accommodations, a full-service RV park and campground facilities. Whatever you choose, a few days on Lake Mohave restores the senses after the carnival atmosphere of Sin City, and since the folks at Cottonwood look after all the nitty-gritty details from hotel luggage transfers until you board your flight home, the entire experience is seamless and worry-free. Besides, skinny dipping keeps you young. Chris McBeath contributes to Surrey-based Travel Writers’ Tales, online at www.travelwriterstales.com.

Hip-hop ‘Elements’ in S. Surrey
062210
The skate park at South Surrey rec centre will be alive with the sights and sounds of hip-hop this Saturday (June 26). The Elements youth event is designed to celebrate the four elements of hip-hop culture — that is, DJ-ing, MC-ing, break dancing and urban art. Canadian Bboy champs Now or Never Crew will perform, along with others, and DJ Flipout, from the Beat radio station, will host the all-ages afternoon affair, set for noon to 3 p.m. at 14601 20th Ave. Elements is presented by Surrey Youth Centre in partnership with Alexandra Neighbourhood House. “This event is about bringing community together, and youth in particular,” said event organizer Jordan Wiebe. “Our aim is to offer the youth a platform to show their talents and, at the same time, introduce them to some adults (who) have taken their own passions and have made a career of their various art forms. We want to show youth that when you put your energy into something positive, whether it is music, dance, art or sports, it can pay off in many different ways.” Elements is also a platform to give youth a voice for what their needs are in the South Surrey area, in the form of a survey conducted at the event. Collected information will be taken back to the South Surrey/White Rock Child and Youth Committee “to continue their work in helping to serve these needs.” The event will be postponed in the event of rain.

50/50 DRAW AT BC LIONS HOME GAMES Last season, sales from 50/50 tickets at BC Lions home games helped raise more than $155,000 for junior football in British Columbia. In 2010, the BC Lions 50/50 draw will continue to support junior football, while contributing funds to Football BC, the BC Secondary School Football Association and the BC Community Football Association. UNITED WAY OF THE LOWER MAINLAND & COURAGE FOR KIDS PROGRAM The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to partner with the United Way of the Lower Mainland for the Courage For Kids program. The BC Lions Courage For Kids program enables less fortunate children and their families to attend a Lions football game at Empire Field. In 2009, more than 10,000 tickets were donated through this initiative, which was made possible by the generosity of our Courage For Kids corporate partners and the United Way of the Lower Mainland. EVERY YARD COUNTS In 2010, the BC Lions will continue to partner with BC Children’s Hospital for the Every Yard Counts program, which provides an opportunity for children receiving ongoing medical treatment to attend a BC Lions home game.
In addition to experiencing the excitement and emotion of a CFL game, the children also have an opportunity to meet their football heroes faceto-face. BC LIONS TACKLE HUNGER Each year, the BC Lions and Purolator team up to “Tackle Hunger” at one home game during the season. On this special night, Lions fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item and/or a cash donation to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. In 2010, the BC Lions will once again team up with Purolator to tackle hunger on Aug. 7 when the BC Lions host the Calgary Stampeders at Empire Field. Don’t forget to bring your donation on game night. BC LIONS CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC Last season, the annual BC Lions Charity Golf Classic helped raise more than $70,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the BC Lions Courage for Kids program in 2009. The 2010 BC Lions Charity Golf Classic will be held on Monday, Sept. 13 at the Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club. BC LIONS STREET PARTY The BC Lions Street Party is held two hours prior to every Lions home game during the 2010 season at the north end of Empire Field and is a fun, entertaining way to kick off game day. Featuring live music, food, face painting, inflatable games, Felions appearances and much more, the Street Party donates all proceeds to the club’s Lions Share partners. LIONS SHARE Back for a fifth season in 2010, the Lions Share program benefits its partners through fundraising initiatives while allowing the BC Lions to continue their commitment to giving back to the community. In 2009, more than $36,000 was raised in support of the Lions Share program.

Blue Jays in hunt for first place
The North Michael BOOTH Delta Blue Jays Sports Editor maintained their pursuit of first place in the B.C. Premier Baseball League with three more wins last week. The three wins pushed the Jays current string of Ws to four and North Delta now trails leagueleading Langley by a single game in the overall standings. North Delta swept both ends of a twin bill with the expansion Victoria Eagles at Mackie Park Sunday, winning by counts of 2-0 and 9-4. Earlier in the week the Jays blanked southern rival White Rock 6-0. “Both of the Eagles games were tough wins,” said Blue Jays general manager Bob Burkmar. “We started slowly in both games but then all of sudden we started clicking. Every win is important right now; we need them all. I talked with (coach) Jason Rich after the last game and we both felt this weekend is the first time our whole team was playing as a unit and not as a bunch of individuals. We don’t have to tell them to talk it up or to hustle on the field.”
In the first game, Quinn Allen pitched five solid innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six to earn the win. Brad White earned the save in relief. The Jays got off to a slow start in Game 2, but snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The floodgates opened after that as North Delta pushed two more runs across in the fifth followed by three in the sixth to turn the game into a rout. Stefan McKee belted a home run and finished with four RBIs to cue the North Delta offence. On Tuesday evening, the Blue Jays defence stole the show in a 6-0 whitewash of White Rock. North Delta clung to a 2-0 lead through five innings before plating a pair of runs in each of the final two innings to seal the win. Matt Tompkins and Tyson Popoff each drove in a pair of runs for the Jays. Cam Frick allowed just two hits in five innings of work to pick up the win on the hill for North Delta. “Our guys worked hard to get the shutout,” Burkmar said.
“White Rock has some good players but our guys played tough. Then they got a double, they weren’t able to move their guys along and when they did have the opportunity to make something happen, our players came up with big defensive plays.”
DENNIS SPRINGENATIC/ “We need every win we can get right now, especially when we play against teams below us.” Elsewhere, the Fraser Valley Chiefs improved to 17-13 on the year thanks to a sweep of a twogame set with the Okanagan A’s Saturday in Whalley. The Chiefs eked out a 7-6 win in the first game before doubling up on the Kelowna visitors 6-3 in the nightcap. “We need every win we can get right now, especially when we play against teams below us,” said Fraser Valley coach Dennis Springenatic. “Our goal is to finish in the top four and we’re a
couple games out of fourth right now. It’s going to be a tight race right to the end this year and the only thing we can do is keep winning our games.” Alex Quan, Brandon Bufton and Brody Hawkins had a big day at the plate, combining for nine hits in the two outings. Hawkins also earned the win in relief in the first game before Alex Dunbar picked up the W in five innings of work in Game 2. “They were both close games, very interesting for sure,” Springenatic said. “We had some guys who came through for us when we needed them this weekend. We’ve been struggling a bit at the plate lately but not Saturday. If those guys don’t get hot, we don’t win those games - it’s as simple as that.” It was another tough week for the White Rock Tritons. After dropping the 6-0 loss to North Delta Tuesday, the South Surrey boys fell 4-3 to the Reds in Coquitlam Wednesday before being tagged with a pair of forfeit losses to the Victoria Eagles Sunday.

Phil Reimer’s
❚ SPORTS ❚HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL
golf report Four selected to Team B.C.
Early on in the tournament I asked him to describe Pebble Beach. His reply: “Small greens, big houses.” In fact, he thought most of those small greens would fit into some of those big houses. When all was said and done those small greens — and yes, those small approaches and those tough pin placements — on the final day proved to be the undoing of some huge names who could not mount a charge on a very tough course. Graeme McDowell, the new pride of Northern Island, unlike some of those big names bent but didn’t break. Yes, he finished over par on Sunday, but so did most. In the end he finished dead even for the four rounds and that was good enough. Phil Mickelson said early on in the tournament when some were going low: “Don’t worry, no one is going to stay there.” And he was right.
Four high school football players from Surrey and North Delta have made the grade with the coaches of the B.C. Under18 team. Team BC will represent British Columbia at the 2010 Football Canada Cup to be held at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia from July 10 - 17, 2010. Three of the local representatives come from the defensive side of the ball. Johnthia Fernandez of
Holy Cross and Anthony Ganton of Sands will suit up on the defensive line while Seaquam’s Buddy Hutchison made the team at linebacker. On offence, Jacob Carvery of Sands will line up at wide receiver. The selection process began in April with over 200 players from around the province attending one of four identification camps and 97 of those players being invited to a training camp at Simon

On the 18th hole McDowell, who was attempting to become the first European in 40 years to win the U.S. Open and his first major, turned to the camera with a fond wish for fathers on their day. Now that’s beating down the pressure.

In the interview after his win he kept using the word “calm” and that was really it. If you stayed calm and stayed in the moment and played steady golf — don’t overreach, as many said after the tournament — that kept you in the hunt and that’s what McDowell did all day.

For those who think McDowell is a flash in the pan, he is in the top 50 in the world, and he won his last tournament before playing in the U.S. Open.
Join thousands of visitors and make a day of the market!
Can’t wait for those 4 a.m. alarms when they tee it up for the British Open next month. Chip Shots I thought Mike Weir had a good chance to finish high up after his first day 1 under. The main reason was the birdies he was getting on the tough back 9. It was not to be, and he finished near the bottom of the leaderboard.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

❚AUTOMOTIVE ❚MAINTENANCE
Auto care saves money
Did you know... If you took steps to double the life cycle of your car, you could save thousands and thousands of dollars? A study conducted by Runzheimer Canada shows that car owners who extend the life of their vehicle from four years to at least eight years, were able to keep up to $20,000 in their pocket. Supporting these findings, Krown Rust Control reports that another study, released at the 2000 Canadian Fleet Maintenance Seminar, shows a saving of $600 in maintenance costs for every $100 spent. For the 8,000 vehicles studied in that report, $1.2 million was spent and $7.5 million was saved. The savings reflect a combination of car payment costs, interest, and reduced insurance costs. More information is available online at www. krown.com. — News Canada
