NORTH DELTA – Jack Norman, 80, usually enjoys watching life unfold outside the window of his Kennedy apartment in North Delta.

But lately, he’s been worried about the traffic on his corner, at 88th Avenue and 118A Street.

“I don’t want to see someone get killed in front of my face,” he says. “There have been some close calls. We’ve got to do something.”

Norman is not alone. Delta council was recently presented with a petition containing the signatures of 139 residents who are concerned about an increased volume of cars speeding down 88th Avenue, between 116th Street and Kennedy Heights shopping centre.

Although the one-time major throughway has been all but blocked off at the mall in favour of Nordel Way, residents say it remains busy with motorists taking a short cut by the local pub, driving behind the mall to access the bigger streets.

The neighbourhood is a busy one, with the Columbus Lodge, senior’s recreation centre, boys and girls club, a martial arts club, Immaculate Conception Church and catholic elementary school, not to mention apartment buildings.

The petitioners have lobbied council for a speed limit sign to be posted on 88th somewhere between 116th Street and the mall, as well as a stop sign at 118A. The Corporation of Delta responded by installing a wheelchair access ramp at the 118A/88th intersection, a cross walk, and “no parking” signs and school signs nearby.

Drunk driving case drags, charges stayed SURREY – A man accused of driving with a blood alcohol level over .08 milligrams has won a stay of proceedings in Surrey provincial court because it took the court too long to deal with his case.

Sanjeet Ark argued that his Charter right to be tried within a reasonable time had been infringed upon, following 21 months of court delays without his trial being heard. The court heard he was prepared to mount “a vigorous defence” against the charge, laid on June 15, 2008.

The court agreed the case had been drawn out too long to be fair to the accused. Judge Michael Hicks stayed the charge, finding “his right to a fair trial would be at risk if the matter proceeded.”

Norman laments, “there is not patrolling done here at all.”

“If we don’t get it under control it’s just going to get worse.”

For the municipality’s part, stop signs aren’t the answer. Indeed, Delta police had been monitoring the four-way stop at 119th and 88th, which some motorists have been blowing through.

“Stop signs are not warranted at that location,” said Delta transportation engineer Hon Yee, of the municipality’s engineering department.

Stop signs are used to regulate traffic at intersections, he said, not slow traffic down.

“It’s a cheap solution, but it’s not the right solution.”

According to Yee, the installment of a stop sign at 118A Street could actually create a safety hazard.

If the stop sign’s not needed, he reasoned, locals will get used to no cars being there and will start ignoring the sign themselves.

Betty Gobolos is among the unsatisfied residents who want

traffic calming measures installed on 88th.

“We want something to slow them down,” she said of the cars.

“It’s the safety of everyone we want to do something about,” she said. “It’s for the safety of the children and residents in the area.”

Robert Sinclair agrees. He lives at the same apartment building as Norman, and is also 80.

“We’d like to see a stop sign here,” he said. “The cars just fly up – there’s no hesitation when they see a crosswalk.”

SURREY – A coroner’s inquest into the death of a man who collapsed during a police incident outside his house on Crescent Road has determined his death was accidental.

The jury concluded that David James Stitt, 46, died of cardiorespiratory arrest brought on by “agitated confusional state (excited delirium) and restraint” and “acute and chronic cocaine use.”

The three-day inquest was heard in Burnaby last week. The jury made no recommendations.

Stitt died in hospital on June 19, 2008, two days after getting into a fight with a Surrey Mountie outside the house he’d been renting on Crescent Road.

Stepdad jailed for year ❚EDUCATION/Police investigate competition to seduce Grade 8 girls at Surrey school

Most boys at school protective of girls: Strachan SURREY – Police Ted and school officials COLLEY are investigating after Staff Reporter learning a small number of older male students at a Surrey high school were engaged in a competition to see who could seduce the greatest number of Grade 8 girls.

Staff at Cloverdale’s Lord Tweedsmuir became aware of the game earlier this month after talking to concerned students and viewing a Facebook site.

Letters were sent to the parents of all of the school’s Grade 8 girls and Grade 11 and 12 boys warning them of the scheme.

“I need to emphasize that nothing untoward has been happening

at the school in this regard and it’s not known how many Grade 8 girls may have actually been involved in any way with this activity,” Tweedsmuir principal Allan Buggie wrote.

Facilitators from SafeTeen, an organization created to help children cope with the pressures of life, were called in by the school district.

They met with all of the Grade 8 girls and talked to them about self-respect and ways of dealing with pressure to engage in sexual activity.

School district spokesman Doug Strachan said only a very few senior boys were involved in the scheme. Most boys at

Tweedsmuir were angry when the juvenile plot became public.

“It’s a small number who bring this kind of attention to the wider group who would have nothing to do with it,” Strachan said.

“A lot of boys have sisters, some of them younger sister, and they’re very protective of them.”

What sort of disciplinary measures the boys involved might face remains to be seen.

“That’s unfolding in tandem with the RCMP investigation.

Until that’s complete, we don’t know,” Strachan said.

Surrey RCMP Const. Peter Neily said at this point school liaison officers are working with students to help them deal with the situation.

“If any criminal complaints come forward, such as differences in age, age of consent, or reports of somebody being coerced into anything, we would launch an investigation,” he said.

SURREY – A Surrey stepdad has been sentenced to a year in prison for molesting his stepdaughter.

He pleaded guilty to touching, for a sexual purpose, a young person dependent on him. He cannot be named, to protect the identity of his victim.

Today, the minimum sentence for such a crime is 45 days in prison and the maximum, 10 years.

At the time of the offence – described by the court as between May 1st, 2002 and July 1, 2004, inclusive – there was no minimum sentence and the maximum was five years.

The court heard the offender had sexual contact numerous times with his stepdaughter while her mother was away at work.

For most of her Marisa BABIC life, Norma Reed Staff Reporter led an active and healthy lifestyle.

Then five years ago, with just three days left before Christmas, Reed’s doctor informed her about the results of a test — results that confirmed a diagnosis of uterine cancer.

“It was a shock,” Reed said in a recent interview.

After recovering from the initial shock, Reed’s survival instincts sharpened. A strong woman, she made up her mind that she was going to win the fight against the disease that was threatening her life. Her

hubby took the news the hardest but the daunting health challenge seemed to only strengthen her resolve.

“I’m just a very deal-with-it carryon type of person,” said the 53-yearold woman.

As a cancer survivor, Reed now spends some of her time helping to raise awareness about the Canadian Cancer Society’s fundraisers and the agency’s programs that help people living with cancer.

On June 12, Reed will help host the Surrey component of the Relay for Life.

The relay will be held in 53 communities in B.C. and the Yukon.

Surrey’s relay will take place at the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre.

The annual Relay for Life, a 12hour non-competitive, overnight event that attracts individuals and teams, celebrates the lives of cancer survivors and remembers those who have lost the battle.

As chair of the survivor’s tent, Reed will take part in the Survivors Victory Lap, an emotional and empowering experience.

“They’ll walk the first lap that starts the relay,” she said.

The Luminary Ceremony happens at twilight and is a time to remember

and honour loved ones who have lost the battle. The purchased luminaries will be placed around the relay track, creating an emotive tableau.

Funds raised by the relay are used for cancer research, programs to support those in recovery and cancer prevention programs.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, relay participants commit to raising a minimum of $100 but the average participant raises $350.

“It’s fun, it’s a fun event,” Reed said.

Two Surreyites among Canada’s top 25 immigrants A pair of Surreyites Tom ZILLICH are among Canada’s top Staff Reporter 25 immigrants, as voted by readers of a national magazine.

Dr. Jagessar Das and Charan Gill will be feted Thursday (May 27) in Vancouver at an awards event co-hosted by Canadian Immigrant magazine.

The list of 25 award winners was made public today (Tuesday). Eight of the winners are from B.C.; the list includes broadcaster Ian Hanomansing and VancouverWhistler Olympics boss John Furlong.

More than 20,000 people voted online for their top choices, from a short list of 75 finalists.

Das, originally from Guyana, is a retired family doctor who dedicates his spare time to promoting religious understanding through his writings and volunteerism.

He is the founding member of Global Clergy Association of Canada and president CHARAN GILL of the Guru Kabir Association of Canada.

Gill, originally from India, is executive director of PICS immigrant settlement

agency and is a advocate for immigrant farmers and seniors.

Salmonella outbreak likely from eggs The BC Centre for Disease Control is warning the public of a steady increase in salmonella cases in the Lower Mainland.

Since 2008, more than 500 cases have been reported. It’s estimated that for every reported case, there are between 13 and 37 others that are not reported.

“Eggs are the most likely source of this outbreak,” said Dr. Eleni Galanis, physician epidemiologist with the BCCDC. “As sick individuals have eaten eggs from many sources, it’s not clear what type may be causing the outbreak.

“However, the investigation did uncover the use of ungraded and broiler hatching eggs in restaurants and other food service establishments in the Lower Mainland.

Eggs used at these places were of poor

quality, cracked and dirty.”

Salmonella can be found on the eggshell and in egg whites and yolks. People can be infected by eating raw or undercooked eggs, or by handling contaminated eggs – either the shell or interior – and not washing their hands.

The BCCDC recommends people eat well-cooked eggs, and avoid raw or runny eggs, keep eggs refrigerated, wash their hands after handling eggs, and use only pasteurized eggs in foods calling for uncooked eggs.

People at highest risk are young children, elderly people and those who have weak immune systems.

Growing pot to pay off gambling debts doesn’t pay for Surrey man SURREY – A Surrey Tom ZYTARUK man who operated a Staff Reporter marijuana growing operation to pay off his gambling debt has drawn an unlucky sentence for his crime.

Surrey provincial court Judge Michael Hicks handed Quoc Viet Lam, 34, a 15month conditional sentence – three more months than what both the Crown and defence asked for – after he pleaded guilty to growing marijuana.

The judge noted that marijuana grow operations “present significant concerns” in Surrey and elsewhere.

“They invite other criminals and criminal activity into communities and the neighbourhoods where they are established,” Hicks said. “Home invasions, robberies, assaults and the presence and use of firearms in these neighbourhoods place innocent people at great risk.”

In July 2009, police were investigating the theft of 17,000 watts of electricity at 7768 144th St. and upon executing a search warrant found a sophisticated three-room grow op with 912 plants worth $307,000.

The house was sparsely furnished with reinforced windows, motion sensors, video surveillance, and had booby traps featuring cans of bear spray activated by push pads.

Lam was arrested as he drove out of the garage.

The court heard Lam had been paying $1,700 for rent there, had been laid off from his welding job in November 2008 and owed $30,000 in gambling debts.

His sentence amounts to 10 months of house arrest followed by five months of nighttime curfew. He must also serve 50 hours of community service. tzytaruk@thenownewspaper.com

Surrey RCMP Const. Peter Neily said the man fell into “medical distress” in police custody. He refused to confirm if the man had been arrested and under what suspicion. Vancouver police are awaiting autopsy results.

Finance Minister Colin Hansen wandered up to the press gallery the other day, searching out Keith reporters to BALDREY talk about what appears to be the end of the economic recession.

It was an indication of the somewhat desperation situation Hansen and his colleagues are in right now. The sign of any positive development is quickly seized upon by the government, which tries to thrust it in front of the public in the hopes of getting some kind of credit for it.

But the strategy is not working. The public has tuned the B.C. Liberal government out, and no matter what Hansen says about the economy, I’m not sure anyone is listening to him.

Evidence of that can be seen in the latest Mustel Group poll, which pegged support for the B.C. Liberals at just 32 per cent of the electorate, well behind the NDP, which sits at 44 per cent.

More troubling for the B.C. Liberals, the poll showed rising support for a third party. The B.C. Conservatives, which barely exists as a viable political organization, sits at seven per cent.

A scenario seems to be developing which could prove fatal to the B.C. Liberals. If there is indeed a growing appetite for a centre-right alternative to the governing party, the NDP would coast to a rather large majority win in 2013.

won power all occurred with a significant split on the centre right).

So how can the B.C. Liberals squelch a third party before it catches fire? It’s not an easy question to answer.

The magnitude of the problem can be seen in the areas where support for the anti-HST petition is strongest.

In roughly a half dozen ridings currently held by Liberal MLAs, the number of signatures on the petition exceeds the number of people who voted for them in the last election (and the number of these ridings will surely grow by the time the petition sign-up period ends in July).

Significantly, these ridings are located in the Interior, where the old federal Reform Party was strongest in federal elections. The electorate in that region gravitates toward an anti-tax populist type of political movement, so it’s easy to foresee a centre-right alternative to the B.C. Liberals putting down stakes there and not being easily dislodged.

The key for a third party to take hold will be its adherence to populist issues – not its potential to become a vehicle for the religious right, which would doom it to the margins of the political scene.

That’s one prospect of hope for the government. The B.C. Liberals’ other glimmer of hope found in the Mustel poll (and supported by the findings of other recent polls) is that the NDP itself shows few signs of growth in popularity.

The NDP is still not viewed with much credibility when it comes to managing the economy.

This may provide the only path back to respectability for the B.C. Liberals, but it’s by no means guaranteed.

Hansen rhymed off a number of economic indicators and forecasts that all point upwards for B.C. Job numbers are up, as are building permits and retail sales.

Mills are re-opening as the forest industry lurches back to life, and the mining industry appears stronger than any time in recent memory.

Several economic forecasts put B.C. at the head of the pack when it comes to economic growth among provinces.

Once an economic recovery takes a firmer hold, will the electorate be more forgiving toward the B.C. Liberals and more suspicious of the NDP’s perceived weakness?

Or will a recovery put everyone in a comfort zone that allows

enough people to take a chance on the New Democrats?

The answer to this puzzle may provide the key to the next election. In the meantime, Hansen and his colleagues have to find a way to make people listen to them once more.

As long as the din over the HST blocks everything else out, the government will continue be ignored (or vilified) – and the prospects of that third party rising will increase.

There may come a day when Hansen visits the press gallery and gets his message out in a more effective way, but that day still seems a long way off.

Men, roll up sleeves and pitch in

Clearly, developers have free reign in Surrey

from work and starts to think about dinner, asks the kids if they have homework, and thus starts her second shift without stopping for a breather. Most men don’t do this.

In all fairness, maybe they didn’t have role models to learn from. Their fathers didn’t do this, maybe because their moms didn’t work or maybe because their fathers are still a generation away from understanding a simple fact – their wives are also now working outside the home and need their help with housework.

This is very much apparent in South Asian families. South Asian men don’t take to house work. Most of them were pampered in their upbringing, treated like royalty by the women in the family. They are not told or shown how to do anything for themselves; they have everything done for them. In many South Asian homes today, it is still that way. It is the culture, they (South Asian men) say, it’s the woman’s role to do house work.

Now I agree there are the small percentages of South Asian men who do their share of housework, but they usually don’t want their friends to know – something about losing face. I say to these men take this opportunity to teach other men, within and outside your cultural group about the fairness of pitching in at home.

If men can get with the realities of life in the 21st century, then women won’t have to train or have the men housebroken. It is not rocket science, guys. Women are also working outside the home and contributing toward the finances. They, too, come home tired after a long day at work – all they ask for and want is for their men to be attuned to what needs to be done without having to tell them again and again.

Now if the men understood this simple fact and got on the same thought process as their partner, life would be great for them. In fact, men who pitch in are happier, as they are not constantly nagged at or have to deal with a tired cranky wife or partner. Imagine – no nagging, no attempts to change or “train” or “housebreak” you.

Men, you can be free of all that by just acknowledging that everyone, regardless of gender, wants to be carefree and have “me time.” So pay a little attention and contribute in more ways than with just bringing home a paycheque.

The Editor, Recently, the City of Surrey has gotten all kinds of positive press for its participation in Arbor Day celebrations.

The Parks and Community Services chair, Mary Martin, has bragged about the planting of 500 new trees in Bridgeview. Dianne Watts has remarked on the importance of trees, and environmental stewardship. Nice try, but stewardship usually involves maintenance.

Since my husband and I moved to Surrey four years ago, more than 500 trees – not sixfoot baby trees, but stands including massive Douglas firs, cedars, ancient fruit trees, and even one magnificent beech tree – have been mowed down indiscriminately on the hillside immediately around us.

Our pleas to Surrey arborists, Surrey drainage engineers, and Surrey politicians have fallen on deaf ears.

One city planner informed us that some old growth trees could not be saved “because that’s where a house is going.”

Our panicked attempts to save a small stand of Douglas firs and alders on the perimeter of a lot behind us resulted in a response from Surrey’s planning department saying that the trees had to go because there was a drainage ditch going there.

The fact that Surrey Central Elementary School had just lost its only playground shade, and several classrooms were now exposed to full sun was not important.

Teachers at the school, as well as many of the students, were understandably upset. Our entire neighbourhood is now experiencing severe drainage problems, partly because we are on the Cloverdale clay, but undoubtedly also because of the simple facts that trees absorb water and their root systems prevent excessive runoff. The trees are not there. The cheek by jowl houses that blanket the hillside are experiencing cracked foundations and slumping sidewalks as the hill washes down.

In Surrey, developers seem to have free rein. House size is increasing and lot size is decreasing, and all of this results in a bigger tax base per hectare.

Too bad it also results in habitat loss for everything other than homosapiens.

I heard a line at a party recently that made me stop and think about its impact.

It was, “I’m not trading him for another man. It took me years to train him!” It was spoken by a woman who had been married for a Harvinder few years – she was referring SANDHU to her husband.

When I first heard women talk about their significant others in terms such as “housebroken” or “trained,” I wondered what it meant. When I was told the meaning behind these words, I still couldn’t understand why any woman would refer to her partner in such a manner. Also, why did he have to be “housebroken?” Isn’t that what we do when we train dogs to pee and crap outside? It is rude to refer to our significant others in such a manner.

Back to this term “housebroken.” Where did it come from? I asked around at work and was informed by an older male colleague, who just happens to be Caucasian, that the term came about when men in relationships learned to put the toilet seat down.

Hmmm, must have taken repeated pleas and reminders from the wife or girlfriend to learn that simple task.

Recently, I actually heard a group of young men use this term as they talked about why they were not in a relationship. They shared how the idea of being “trained” by any woman was not for them, that they would rather be carefree and do what they liked. Well, guess what guys, so do women – we, too, like to be carefree.

Many studies have proven how women tend to be much more responsible than most men but not all women are naturally responsible.

Some have to become responsible when they enter long-term relationships and especially once they have kids.

The challenge with men is that they don’t become responsible like the fairer sex; they have to be cajoled, pushed and ultimately “trained” or “housebroken.” And by responsible, I mean that most men don’t pay attention to what needs to be done on a daily basis to keep house, home and finances running smoothly. I know there are some men who are the responsible ones in a relationship but it is the majority of females in a relationship who pick up the slack.

Shoes crafted by North Deltan Ken Rice share history with his more famous friends, Fox and Fluevog

From 1973, a custom-made clog designed and made by Ken Rice for Fox & Fluevog.

Arms crossed and a wry smile on his face, Ken Rice standing is in his shoemaking studio, a converted garage of his home in North Delta.

Rice isn’t as famous as his two friends in the footwear business, and the title of a new exhibit at Museum of Vancouver reflects this reality. If nothing else, the show title, Fox, Fluevog and Friends, is an alliterative way to highlight the names Peter Fox and John Fluevog.

“I’m the ‘friends’ part of it,” Rice told the Now during an interview at his studio, where he continues to hand-make mostly commissioned shoes.

“Of the three of us,” he said, “I’m the only one who makes shoes.”

Shoe design and marketing is where both Fox and Fluevog excelled over the past few decades, while Rice was the hands-on guy who actually crafted them.

“John used to refer to me as ‘this guy in Vancouver’ — that’s what he told people who asked about the shoemaker he worked with.”

The exhibit, which opened May 14, tells the story of these B.C.-based friends, collaborators, trend-spotters, businessmen and artists.

Close to 150 shoes are on view, some dating back to 1968.

At the time, Rice was a hippie living in Toronto who dabbled in making fringed leather pouches at art college. By the summer of 1970, he was a one-way train ticket to Vancouver with a backpack stuffed with some of his craft supplies.

“I grew up designing and making things,” Rice said, “so it’s always been in my nature to do that.”

In Vancouver, he found a home at a Christian commune and soon met Fox, who was already in the shoe business with Fluevog. Belts, bags and KEN RICE other leather goods were made, too, and Rice was busy making and selling them for a living.

One day, upon his return from a business trip to Spain, Fox gave Rice some wooden clog soles and lasts — which are used to form shoes in the creation process — and told him to put his designs on them. From that moment, Rice was hooked on the art of shoemaking, self-teaching himself how to shape pieces of leather and wood into something fashionable for feet.

This month, Rice was busy making a pair of brogued Oxfords for himself, and another pair of shoes for his wife, Brenda, to wear to the opening of the exhibit at Museum of Vancouver.

“Right from the drawing to the finished shoe, that’s what I do,” Rice said of the process, which can take 12 to 15 hours per pair. “It’s a pretty rare thing, yeah, but I’m really not sure how many people are still doing it in Canada.

There are orthopedic shoemakers and boot makers — work boots and logging boots, but even that’s in decline, because of the decline in the logging business in B.C. But I’m fashion, and there’s even less of that these days.”

The shelves of Rice’s studio are lined with dozens of yellow and green lasts along with boxes of shoe designs — some old, dating back to his days toiling at a factory in Gastown, and others not so dated, such as the one labeled “JF prototypes 09.” Other tools of the trade abound, such as odd-shaped pieces of leather he’s dying shades of British tan and maroon.

He and Brenda moved to North Delta in the summer of 1994 with the youngest three of six kids they birthed; the youngest, Andrew, will be 21 this year.

In 1999, Rice opened a shoemaking studio on Granville Island and remained there until

“I moved home to the garage again, and I came home with more equipment than I left,” Rice said with a laugh.

Rice seems like a humble man, someone who doesn’t really enjoy the spotlight.

“Well,” he responds to my assessment, “I was in a garage band once — and now

I’m in a garage here. I pretty much grew up in a garage.

My father was a mechanic and had a marina and gas station, a Volkswagen dealership in small-town Ontario (Granvenhurst).”

Reached on the phone, Fluevog said Rice has always been his own man.

“He’s quiet, but he’s quite firm underneath all that,” Fluevog told the Now. “He’s a true hippie.”

Fluevog continues to work with Rice on shoe samples, and credits the

North Deltan for making the very first shoe he ever designed, a turned-up-toe model called the Pilgrim.

“Ken has a really good eye for line, but I wouldn’t call him a fashion mogul.

He’s a true craftsman, and there’s not many people like that left. He’s a rare individual, self-taught, in a very dying trade.

“He’s very good and very talented,” Fluevog continued. “It’d be nice if he got a bit of recognition.

It’s very hard to describe

to people how hard it is to make a pair of handmade shoes, the shear number of hours involved. It’s not making a bunch of money when they’re priced at $1,900 a pair, or whatever the price.”

At his home, Rice has set up a sort of showroom in the living room, with samples of his shoes and an album that includes photos of his custom jobs for the movies — boots worn by Robin Williams in Jumanji, the two left-foot

loafers he made for Eugene Levy in Best in Show. A bedroom has been transformed into a stock room.

Now that there’s a museum exhibit focusing on his work, Rice feels a bit antiquated, but he’s OK with it.

“It’s funny, because in the show, a lot of the shoes that are described as John’s, either I helped

with the design or I made the actual shoe, the prototype.… I was design developer and technician and maker. I think I just wanted to have a successful business. I didn’t get rich or anything, but I’m still alive and kicking.

Maybe it’s going to come yet, who knows?”

We pass by it all the time in the produce section, but when not being used as a garnish or a minor ingredient, what else can we do with parsley?

Parsley is botaniChef cally called petroselinum DEZ crispum. This is derived from the Greek word petros, meaning stone, as it was often found growing in and around groups of rocks.

Today, this herb, naturally high in vitamin A and C, is usually available in just two different varieties. Curly leaf parsley is the most common one we see today at the grocery store, however in some markets, flat-leaf Italian parsley is just as common. The main visual difference between the two is just what the names predict, although flat-leaf Italian parsley has more flavour than its curly common counterpart.

When parsley is used for purposes other than garnish, it is usually added as a minor ingredient to characterize a dish with a distinct touch of natural herb flavour and a bit of colour. However, there are some recipes that use parsley as a main ingredient, such as pesto.

Traditionally, pesto is prepared by pureeing fresh basil leaves mainly with olive oil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan cheese and lemon juice to form an out-

This makes the pesto recipe not only more affordable, but also easier to create from scratch throughout the year, as fresh parsley is more accessible in the markets than fresh basil.

2/3 cup roasted, salted cashews 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 large garlic cloves, peeled Juice of one half lemon 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp fresh cracked pepper 1 bunch fresh curly leaf parsley, large stems removed Method: 1. In a food processor, grind the cashews on high speed for approximately 15 seconds.

2. Continue to process on high speed while slowly adding one quarter cup of the olive oil through the top opening, and then process for another 30 seconds until mixture is almost completely smooth and liquid.

3. Turn off the processor. Add the cheese, garlic, lemon juice, salt, and pep-

per. Turn the processor back on and process on high speed while feeding the parsley through the top opening. When all of the parsley has been added, continue to process on high speed while slowly adding the remaining one quarter cup of olive oil.

4. Turn off the processor, scrape down the sides, and process for another 10 to 15 seconds.

5. Toss with hot freshly cooked pasta of your choice, or use in a variety applications such as a pizza or bruscetta topping, or mix it with mayo for a great sandwich spread, or with sour cream for a great veggie dip.

Yield: Approximately 1.5 cups.

Snorkeling Hawaii: Big island bays and manta rays

T

he Big Island’s underwater world fascinates me. From our Kona coast resort, my wife and I initially explore adjacent Kahalu’u Beach Park where a reef encloses a sublime bay. Meeting green sea turtles and collections of finny friends, investigations climax with a snowflake moray eel wiggly-jiggling into white cauliflower coral.

An hour’s drive away, another protected bay lies outside the sacred palmshaded Place of Refuge, where once Hawaiians sought sanctuary within its high, 1,000-foot-long lavastone walls. Off Honaunau Bay’s lava ledges — nicknamed by locals as “three steps” — I jump into crystal waters to admire a coral wonderland, recognizing many of Hawaii’s astonishing fish, which often resemble terrestrial namesakes: butterfly, parrot, hawk, turkey, squirrel, goat, hog, and lizard-fish. In this swirl of colour roams Hawaii’s tongue-twisting and famed humu-humu-nuku-nukuapu’a’a, which means snouted pig fish.

Boats access further splendid marine sanctuaries. Boarding the Fair Wind II at Keauhou Bay, we embark on an extraordinary maritime adventure. Spinner dolphins surf in the sleek catamaran’s wake. Arriving at beautiful and historic Kealakekua Bay, our captain points out a tall white obelisk. “That’s the Cook Monument.”

Apparently, Captain Cook was first welcomed

here as a god in 1779, but months later slain as a troublesome mortal. Then his crew instructs us on habitat preservation and safety, distributing flotation devices and snorkeling gear, including prescription masks.

Cleaning my lens, I climb down the stern ladder and snorkel off into kaleidoscopes of piscine beauties. Fancifully striped Moorish idols and silvery unicorn tangs parade by, yellow trumpet-fish pose idly ready to slurp a meal, small neon bright wrasses clean other finned kindred and red cardinal fish gather in the shadowy depths. Preying on a purple sea urchin, a triggerfish fires water jets to flip it over. Below, a small brown octopus slithers and curls under cauliflower coral.

Following a tasty barbecue and one last dip for snorkelers in this phenomenal bay, the captain gathers us up and sets a homeward course. The onboard naturalist begins a media program on marine animals. Midway through her tale about a monk seal that had ventured into this bay and mischievously tugged peoples’ fins, the captain announces, “A humpback mother and calf are off the bow at two o’clock.”

Everyone hustles forward to watch these marvelous, mammoth mammals.

Yet, the most incredible of ocean encounters involves the devilfish.

Their chilling name derives from their large cephalic horns that unfurl at nighttime to scoop plankton into their huge mouths.

Boasting fearsome wingspans from three to 16 feet and weighing from 800 to 2,000 pounds, these toothless filter feeders are actually harmless.

For over two decades, shoreline spotlights at a nearby Keauhou resort have attracted these magnificent creatures, popularly known now as Manta Rays.

Returning dockside at sunset, we board the Hula Kai to dive with manta rays at the only place on earth that offers such experiences. The videographer sits on the bow telling us how researchers identified this area’s 150 mantas by noting distinctive spot patterns on their backs and discovering that these unique creatures live only here, off Kona’s sunny coast. He warns us against touching them, as scraping their mucus membranes causes skin lesions and infections. His Big Bertha story makes us wonder if this awesome 2,500-pound beauty with her 18-foot wingspan will appear tonight. Estimated at 50 years old, we learn she’s lived only half her potential life.

Snuggly svelte in our wetsuits for this cool adventure, our group eagerly plunges into the dark water and swims to a long raft aglow with pot lamps. Scuba divers sit on rocky ledges 25 feet below, pointing flashlights upward. Our collection of bright lights readily attracts plankton — and mantas.

Bobbing under starry skies watching these minuscule organisms rise from the coral, I discern their snaky embryonic bodies squirming in a nearby beam. Small silvery fish dart into view, snapping up these tiny critters.

Within minutes, the first manta swoops into view!

Soon afterward, two more join the festivities, flapping their powerful six- and eight-foot wings. Endowed

with amazing vision and electromagnetic sense, they swirl and sweep around us, all the while scooping up their nightly meal.

With flexible cartilage and powerful muscles, these marine ballerinas perform perfect pirouettes and jetes. One soars toward me and, just before contact, barrel-rolls sharply away, exposing her brightwhite underbelly. Surely the ocean’s most graceful creatures, they mesmerize us for nearly an hour with their amazing choreography.

Water wonderments end far too soon. Yet surely we’ll return for further Big Island adventures and delight in new maritime encounters.

Year of the Husky ❚SPORTS HALL OF FAME/Four of this year’s 10 inductees have connections to North Delta Secondary It turned out Mark BOOTH to be the year of Canwest News Service the Husky when it came time for the Delta Sports Hall of Fame to announce its 2010 class.

Four of this year’s 10 inductees have connections to North Delta Secondary school, including two athletes and the Huskies basketball team that captured the provincial title in 1975.

All the inductees will be honoured at the Delta Sports Hall of Fame’s Banquet of Champions, slated for Saturday, June 12 at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen. Here’s a rundown of the 2010 class: BUILDER John Buis (Basketball) He was a two-time provincial all-star with the North Delta Huskies back in the early 1970s but it’s off the floor where this 32-year veteran of the RCMP has made an even bigger contribution to basketball.

Buis has served as president of Basketball B.C. for the better part of a decade and since 1992 has been a tournament director for the Boys “AAA” Provincial High School Championships. He has been recognized for his efforts with several awards, including the Sport B.C.’s President’s Award and Basketball Canada’s Provincial President of the Year. He also serves on the Basketball Canada and Basketball B.C. hall-of-fame selection committees.

Ron Toigo (Hockey) This longtime Delta resident has not only made an impact on sports

within the municipality but well beyond.

When Toigo brought the Vancouver Giants into the Western Hockey League in 2001, he developed two communitybased initiatives: the Road to Succeed Program and the Drug Squad. The Giants are based out of the Ladner Leisure Centre and all players are billeted locally.

On the ice, Toigo brought the 2003 WHL All-Star Game, the 2005 Prospects Game, the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships and the 2007 Memorial Cup to Vancouver.

COACH Bill Lean (Soccer) After playing for top amateur clubs in England, Lean moved to Delta in 1974 and wasted little time in contributing to the North Delta soccer community. Over an amazing 28-year period, he coached 22 different boys and girls teams.

Lean coached at all levels of youth soccer, guiding his squads to Delta, District, Coastal and Provincial Cup championships.

He also had the opportunity to coach at the B.C. Summer Games and the Western Cup Nike Championship.

He continuously upgraded his coaching credentials, earning a National “C” license. Lean would also serve as Head Coach of the North Delta Soccer Club and launched several programs.

ATHLETE Bindi Kullar (Field hockey) An outstanding athlete while growing up in the Sunshine Hills

area, Kullar achieved the level of national team status in 1996 and would go on to enjoy an outstanding career in Canadian colours.

He earned a whopping 166 international caps, which included winning gold medals at the 1999 and 2007 Pan American Games.

He also played in two Summer Olympic Games, in 2000 in Sydney and 2008 in Beijing.

His Olympic highlight was scoring a goal against Germany in 2000. Many individual awards include being named Canada’s Male Player of the Year in 2008.

Kullar has not only dedicated his time to playing a sport he loves but also helping children understand the important role sports can play.

Karen Clark (Rowing) After getting introduced to the sport through the Delta Deas Rowing Club in the mid-1990s, this North Delta Secondary graduate and standout athlete went on to have an outstanding career at the collegiate and international levels.

She enjoyed a decorated junior career then continued her dominance at the University of Victoria where she helped the Vikings win four consecutive national championships. She also won gold in pairs and eights at the prestigious Canadian Henley Regatta.

Clark joined the national team program in 2000 and had success in pairs and eights. She won bronze at a 2002 World Cup event then captured silver a year later in pairs at the World Championships.

She went on to be a member of Canada’s eight crew at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Now retired, Clark has been

working with VANOC. Kathy Iggulden (Softball) This North Delta Secondary graduate was a pitching machine, dominating every level she played at. After helping B.C. win gold at the 1997 Canada Summer Games in Brandon, Iggulden moved onto Simon Fraser University where she promptly led the Clan to a secondplace finish at the NAIA national championships. A year later, she took it one step further as SFU won the national title and Iggulden collected several awards, including NAIA All-American, Tournament MVP and Conference MVP. She concluded her university career by showcasing her talent at the plate as well, finishing second in the NAIA in home runs and RBI. She was also named NAIA Pitcher of the Year and would leave the Burnaby Mountain campus with virtually every school pitching record, including wins (72).

Gretchen McLennan (Rhythmic gymnastics) This competitive dancer took her career to an entirely different level when she joined the Vancouver Rhythmic Sportive Gymnastics Club under the direction of 1984 Olympic gold medalist Lori Fung. The Ladner native didn’t waste any time in becoming a novice and junior provincial champion in her first two years of competing. Soon after, she made her international debut by representing Canada at a competition in Mexico City.

She became a member of the national rhythmic gymnastics team in 1992 and would eventually earn

defending champion Oak Bay. The successful run completed a memorable debut season for rookie head coach Bill Edwards, who brought his team together to overcome the loss of starting centre and team captain Paul Steele due to injury. Steele would later become an Olympic gold medalist in rowing.

TEAM: North Delta Huskies (basketball) The Huskies capped a dream season in 1975 by capturing the provincial “AAA” championship with a 72-57 victory over the Richmond Colts. A tight battle saw the Huskies pull away by outscoring Richmond 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

The road to the final provided plenty excitement as North Delta edged Fraser Valley rival North Surrey 52-51 in the semi-finals thanks a pair of Mike Kenis free throws with just 15 seconds remaining. Earlier, the Huskies eliminated

PIONEER: Albert Huff (harness racing) A lifetime resident of Ladner, Huff was responsible for the re-birth and continued success of harness racing at Paterson Park.

The venue was nothing more than a trampled down loop until 1948 when Huff headed a group that would take harness racing to another level entirely. The quality of races improved dramatically, as did Paterson Park with a grandstand, floodlights and betting machines all added over the next 20 years. Huff continued his commitment to har-

ness racing right up until his death in 1967.

Huff also was a World War I veteran and served on Delta council.

He was named Delta Citizen of the Year in 1966.

In 2008, he was recognized by the B.C. Standardbred Harness Racing Hall of Fame for his enormous contribution to the sport.

North Delta is also home to several of the municipality’s Sports Champions this year.

The award — not to be confused with the Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductees, as detailed at left and on the previous page — is a reflection of athletic excellence by local athletes, teams and volunteers over the past 12 months.

Winners of the Delta Sports Champions award will also be honoured June 12 at Beach Grove Golf Club as part of the Delta Sports Hall of Fame’s Banquet of Champions. The Sports Champions list this year includes:
