Bylaw aims to reduce metal theft

❚CITY BRIEFS

Hayden’s first time heading for home plate

Pesticide bylaw expected to get OK Surrey council was expected to give final approval Monday night to a bylaw banning cosmetic pesticide use on city land and private residential property. The ban would eliminate the use of pesticides with a number of exceptions, including agricultural and forestry uses, controlling outbreaks of invasive pests, purification of drinking water and situations involving the health of humans or animals.

Ted COLLEY Staff Reporter

Surrey council was expected to endorse a bylaw amendment that would require scrap metal dealers to operate under rules similar to the city’s pawnshops. The move is an attempt to reduce wire and metal theft in the city. If approved, the bylaw would require scrap dealers to demand proper identification from sellers and record information such as their names, addresses, date of birth and details of the materials purchased. Those records would be subject to police scrutiny. Dealers would be forbidden to purchase goods where identifying marks – such as company name, i.e. Telus or Shaw, or a serial number – appear to have been removed or altered. Dealers would also be required to retain purchased metals for at least seven days to give city bylaw or police officers time to investigate any suspicious transactions.

Library on agenda Council was also expected to approve a $26.3-million contract with Dominion Fairmile Construction for the construction of Surrey’s new City Centre library. Council was also asked to approve borrowing $16 million to cover the city’s portion of the $36-million price tag for the library. The federal and provincial governments have committed $10 million each to help fund the project.

With a little help from his nana Beverly Debest, Hayden Karlica is all smiles as he heads for home in his first game of challenger baseball at Whalley Ballpark Sunday. Challenger baseball pairs physically disabled kids with helpers so they can experience the thrill of competing in a sporting event.

Civic election reform was also on council’s agenda Monday as politicians were asked to endorse proposed changes regarding campaign financing, term length and the so-called “corporate vote.” Council was asked to support changes, including identification of groups or individuals directly funding third-party election advertising, making donations to civic campaigns tax deductible and increasing the term of office for mayor and councillor from three to four years. – Ted Colley

❚SURREY/ ‘Now’ story on garbage prompts action

City promised cleanup and it came through The view from Ted Brian Fowler’s COLLEY Staff Reporter front window has improved a lot. Fowler has been after city hall to have a vacant property across the street from his home cleaned up. He lives in the 15400-block of 99A Avenue and the large undeveloped lot across the street has become an impromptu dumpsite. A couple of weeks ago, the property owner was told by the city to cut back the brush along the street to improve sight lines

for traffic. The city’s action was prompted by complaints from Fowler and his neighbours. When the brush was cut back, however, a field of discarded junk was revealed all along the roadside. Fowler complained to city hall, but wasn’t satisfied with the response. “A bylaws officer for this area was here and looked at the work that was done, the brush cutting. She told me, and I quote, that this property looked ‘manicured.’ Manicured, for God’s sake,” he told the Now then.

When told about Fowler’s problem, city manager Murray Dinwoodie promised action. Dinwoodie was as good as his word. The property owner was called and workers were sent to the site over the weekend to clean up. The Now took a look for itself Monday morning and confirmed that all of the garbage along the street was gone. Fowler was pleased with that, but was still unhappy that all the slash cut down two weeks ago was left lying where it fell and

making a mess. “The city said they were going to send the owner 48-hour notice to clean that up, supposedly today. I just want to make sure they do what they need to to get this cleaned up,” he said. Ed Warzel is acting bylaw enforcement officer. He said the property owner has been very cooperative and has complied with all requests to tidy up the lot. “She had people out there working on it all weekend and it looks pretty good. As far as the brush, I’ve had an indica-

tion from her she’ll do it as soon as possible. I’m confident it will done soon, so I’m not going to issue 48-hour notice.” Warzel said such notice is generally used in cases where a property owner is not co-operating. The city can issue notice giving the owner a time limit to clean up. If the owner doesn’t comply, the city can send a crew to do the job and tack the cost onto the owner’s property tax bill. tcolley@thenownewspaper.com See YOUR LETTERS, page 13

Work has begun on the replacement for Kinsmen Place Lodge. The new four-storey residential care centre, at 9650 137A St., Surrey, will have a total of 157 beds — 145 of which will be funded and the other 12 private-pay. The project, at a cost of $33.7 million, will include seven unique sections, each with its own recreation and dining areas. The home will also provide rehabilitation, pastoral care, horticulture and music therapies, a hair salon, library, residents’ kitchen

and access to other services that will promote independence. Fraser Health will contribute approximately $8.8 million in annual operational funding for personal care services, as well as a portion of the hospitality services for the funded residential care beds. Whalley and District Senior Citizens Housing Society will operate and manage the development. The new centre replaces the existing Kinsmen Place Lodge at 103333 Old Yale Rd., which opened in 1975 with 144 beds.

❚ NEWS ❚SURREY/Energy saving kits make a difference

Food bank clients get power smart BC Hydro is Carolyn COOKE teaming up with Staff Reporter the Surrey Food Bank to give the food bank’s clients a break. The food bank is giving away energy saving kits that allows users to save electricity and cash. “Power Smart is a worthwhile program which will help our clients save a few dollars to purchase much needed food as well as learn more about how their family can save energy in their homes,” said Marilyn Herrmann, food bank executive director.

Each kit has approximately $75 worth of energy efficiency products, like compact fluorescent light bulbs, water-saving showerheads, faucet aerators and weatherstripping. This will allow users to save up to 300 kilowatt hours of electricity a year and $60 in energy costs. “We know that cost can be a barrier to implementing energysaving measures, especially if you are hesitant to make an investment in a home you don’t own,” said Lisa Coltart, Hydro’s executive director of Power Smart.

“Thanks to our partnership with the Surrey Food Bank, the kits help make energy efficiency more accessible to low-income customers in Surrey by making products available at no cost.” BC Hydro representatives will be at the food bank until Friday and May 10, 11, 13 and 14 to distribute the kits directly to clients who qualify. Customers are encouraged to bring their most recent BC Hydro bill to help with the qualification process. For more information, see www.bchydro.com.

The measles outbreak is still going strong and health-care providers are reminding people about the need get vaccinated. The last count from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control showed 71 confirmed cases of measles across B.C., most of whom are children who have not been vaccinated and adults who are only partly immunized. Two doses of measles vaccine, given as MMR vaccine (mumps, measles and rubella), are recommended for people born after 1956. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness spread through airborne contact with the virus. The illness begins with a fever, runny nose and cough. After several days, a rash appears on the face and spreads to the chest and limbs. The eyes may be red and very sensitive to light.

Measles can cause serious and sometimes permanent health problems. It often causes an ear infection or pneumonia. One in every 1,000 cases can involve inflammation of the brain, or encephalitis, which can lead to convulsions, deafness or permanent mental disabilities. The best way to avoid measles is to get immunized. “Whether it’s measles, mumps, rubella or a host of other vaccine-preventable diseases for which we have vaccines, the best thing anyone can do is make sure that their vaccinations are up to date,” said Dr. Monika Naus, immunization director for the BCCDC. “Two doses of measles vaccine are 99 per cent effective against the disease. Those are pretty good odds.” The MMR vaccine is free in B.C. – Carolyn Cooke

❚ NEWS ❚DELTA/Funding announcement

❚COLUMN/Universal design

Access to community Cash will help young people develop life skills more than just ramps of the entire community and allowing everyone to have equal access to things from the beginning. Think about making more travel options on trains, planes and resorts accessible. Other ways universal design can be put into practice are websites being fully accessible (audio version and increased fonts for example), education and teaching practices in the classroom (taking into consideration all learning styles and needs) as well as accessible employment opportunities that streamline workplace settings and practices. It is easy to take access for granted, as I often do, until I realize how, in the blink of an eye, an accident, a medical issue or simply the inevitable aging process can possibly make that a challenge for all of us. I am always thankful for the font-increase ability on some websites, so I can continue to read as my eyes change with age. Statistics suggest that people with disabilities in Canada have an annual spending power of more than $25 billion. It is hoped that businesses in our communities will continue to be aware, creative and market directly to these vital customers. Once upon a time, we did not think someone in a wheelchair would be able to drive and, with creative minds and universal design concepts, vehicles can now be adapted. Think about your daily routine and ponder, “What if it was me?” Would you stand for a world that you could not fully access? We’ve come so far but we still have far to go. Encourage your city centres, business owners, government leaders, school boards, designers and the builders of the future to keep being creative and embrace the concept of universal design. We all benefit. The third edition of Possabilities is out this week and highlights some of these concepts. There are several stories that speak of accessible playgrounds, trails and sailing. Pick up your copy of this informative cross disability publication that is opening doors and opening eyes!

050410

Viewpoint

W

e have all supported the concept of universal design without realizing it. If you’ve listened to an audio book Kim while driving, used ROSE an automatic door when your hands have been full (or the doors are large and heavy) or appreciated the curb cuts that were intended for wheelchairs but also assist mothers with children, strollers and skateboarders then you know a bit already about the term. These creative designs have assisted all people with getting around the community and accessing information with equal opportunity. In the age of universal design, it is no longer enough to have the doors automatically open so someone with mobility or vision issues can enter a local business. Everyone has the right to be able to navigate through stores with ease and full access to be a consumer. Accessibility challenges may not be the reality for many of us today, yet it is for thousands of others with disabilities. That is why it is so important for us all to understand the concept of universal design and having full access to our communities. Universal design is a phrase that began back in the 1990s at The Centre for Universal Design in North Carolina. It is now widely used when referring to environments, products and communications, in order for them to become more accessible. The principle being that if we learn now to build, create and have systems that are user-friendly for all, then adaptations for people with disabilities are really no longer required. Systems and environments would already be designed so that everyone can get to them, use them and take advantage of them. Everyone wins with universal design. Yet one must remain creative, understand the needs of people with disabilities and look at this as more of a social model rather than a medical model of change. Access to one’s community is so much more than ramps and accessible bathrooms. It is about understanding the needs

A program helpJessica KERR ing local youth Now Contributor develop life and job skills got a financial boost recently. Delta-Richmond East MP John Cummins has announced the Boys and Girls Club Community Services of Delta/Richmond will receive more than $375,000 in federal funding for its Skills Link project. The cash will help 30 local youth facing employment barriers develop life and job skills to ease their transition to work or returning to school. Skills Link focuses on helping youth facing barriers to employments, such as single parents,

Aboriginal youth, young persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and youth who have dropped out. The program combines workshops on problem solving, goal setting, teamwork and resumé writing with hands-on experience in the workforce. It supports young people in developing basic and advanced employment skills. Eligible participants between 15 and 30 years of age, who are not receiving employment insurance benefits, are assisted through a co-ordinated approach, offering longer-term supports and services that can help them find and keep a job.

“Skills Link offers vulnerable youth the tools they need to successfully take that often scary and daunting first step into true independence and self-reliance,” said Sylvia Tremblay, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club Community Services of Delta/Richmond. “In today’s environment, it is more important than ever that youth develop the skills they need to participate and succeed in the job market,” Cummins said. “By supporting this project, we are helping Delta youth develop the skills, knowledge and work experience they need to reach their full potential.”

Death was accidental, coroner’s inquest says

Russell Brewery’s Eric Dubuc, left, offers a beer sample to Kwantlen student Harj Dhesi Friday, as students toured a number of local business locations in Surrey as part of the city’s first official “Tour of Industry.” The event was hosted by Kwantlen students Kassandra Linklater and Denny Hollick in conjunction with the Surrey Board of Trade. The Tour of Industry aimed to showcase the city as the place to be for up-and-coming businesses.

A Surrey man who choked to death after being arrested by the Surrey RCMP died by accident, a Coroners’ inquest jury has found. Brandon Norman Whitelaw, 22, choked to death after he swallowed a bag of drugs during a drug bust at a residence on Ravine Road in Whalley, on July 31, 2008. He was pronounced dead at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The inquest, held in Burnaby this past week, also found acute methamphetamine toxicity to be a significant contributing factor in Whitelaw’s death. The jury recommended the RCMP review the use of force Mounties use to the neck area of people trying to swallow evidence, and until this review is completed, that the RCMP ceases to use force in such cases. It also recommended police in specialized highrisk units receive extra first aid training where their duties require them to perform life-saving procedures.

Hundreds line up to buy Whalley condos Prospective homebuyers lined up Saturday for a chance at the newest suites in the Quattro development in Whalley. Phase 3 of the project, delayed by a massive fire at the construction site in 2008, has 164 units, 47 of which were sold on the first day of sales. Condos in the first two phases of the project sold out within hours when they were put on the market.

A passenger died in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of 88th Avenue and Fraser Highway in Fleetwood early Friday morning. The crash happened at 5:40 a.m. and involved a car and a pickup truck. Both drivers were taken to hospital to be treated for injuries that weren’t considered life threatening. A passenger in the car died. The victim’s name has not yet been released. The intersection remained closed Friday morning while police investigated the crash. Meanwhile, witnesses are asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-7776. – The Now

sI watched our MLAs finally give passage to the legislation that paves Keith the way for BALDREY the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax, I couldn’t help but think that the tax is here to stay. No matter how loud the cries of “shame, shame!” were from the NDP side the chamber, and no matter how many signatures the anti-HST petition eventually garners, the prospects of actually getting rid of the tax appear dim. There are a number of obstacles here. First, the province is locked into a contractual agreement with the federal government to collect the HST for five years. Any attempt to undo that agreement earlier than 2015 would result in a hefty financial penalty for the B.C. government, likely in the neighbourhood of at least $1.6 billion. Even NDP leader Carole James acknowledges this fact. If her party wins the 2013 election, it will preside over the HST system for two years before making any attempt to get rid of it. Frankly, I can’t imagine public anger over the HST lasting at the current level for another five years. Therefore, it’s unlikely there will be much political pressure on an NDP government to repeal the tax. As well, if the economy is chugging along by that time, I’d bet a lot of economists will point to the HST as being a contributing factor

to that economic growth (something they’re already predicting, but their voices have been shouted down by the outcry over the HST). Those who think a successful petition drive against the new tax will automatically get rid of it should go back and read the actual legislation governing such initiatives. If enough valid signatures are indeed collected (something we won’t know until August), the petition is certified as successful and is sent to an obscure standing committee of the legislature. The Select Standing Committee on Legislative Initiatives must meet within 30 days of receiving the petition (which would be a rare occurrence in itself, given that this committee hasn’t met for 20 years or so) and decide one of two things. It must either recommend a legislative bill based on the language of the petition itself, or refer the bill and the petition to the Chief Electoral Officer for a provincewide referendum. Let’s look at the first option. There’s no guarantee the legislature will sit this fall, so it is conceivable that the anti-HST bill would not be introduced in the house until the spring of 2011.

But introducing a bill is not the same thing as calling a bill for debate and then passing it. Only the government – not the Opposition – can call a bill for debate, and given that passing such legislation would result in that huge financial penalty to the provincial government’s already depleted financial coffers, does anyone seriously believe the B.C. Liberals would pass such legislation? Finance Minister Colin Hansen desperately needs to balance his budget before the next election, so I don’t see him blowing a $1.6billion (and counting) hole in his fiscal plan. As for a provincewide referendum, you can pretty well forget about that option going forward. There’s no way a government will set in motion a vote that will be seen as an anti-government vote – and one that would surely pass. Bill Vander Zalm, the proponent of the anti-HST petition, says he will organize a recall movement against Premier Gordon Campbell if the government essentially ignores a successful outcome of his petition drive. But the earliest he can begin a recall campaign is mid-November, and he would need 40 per cent of

the voters (not 10 per cent as with the petition) to sign a recall petition to be successful. That works out to more than 16,000 people. Will the public anger still be there by that time? Perhaps, but the rules are stacked against a successful recall (just as they are stacked against a successful petition). The B.C. Liberals may yet pay a hefty political price for ignoring the public when it comes to the HST. But they appear willing to take that hit instead of scrapping the tax. If you want dumpsite cleaned, just call the ‘Now’ years faces 99A Avenue, and I sympathize with those homeowners; however, the “alley” (our backyard) is also disgusting. We used to enjoy wildlife that used to live in this bush and now we look out onto a dump. Please remember us back here, as well, Mr. Bylaw officer.

Darlene Kump Surrey

Another trash battle is going on in Surrey The Editor, Re: “A manicured dumpsite,” the Now, April 27. I had to chuckle when reading the phrase “manicured dumpsite.” I also live next door to vacant property and some of our neighbours use it as the local dump. Some of us tried contacting city hall about having it cleaned up. We even put up a “no dumping” sign. Finally, the neighbour on the other side of the property received a letter from the city stating that if he did not clean up his property, the city would do it and charge the cleanup to his taxes. He phoned city hall to inform them that the property belonged to them, asking when were they going to clean it up. They informed him they

wouldn’t. We must also have a “manicured dumpsite.”

P. Walz Surrey

Columnist is nothing but a churchophobe The Editor, Re: “Lesbian teacher exposes more church hypocrisy,” the Now, April 30. It’s quite apparent from Ted Colley’s vitriolic, poisonous prose that he is a churchophobe who has been waiting for another chance to attack the Catholic church’s “hypocritical attitudes” and therefore must have been delighted when the Little Flower Acadamy decided to act as it saw fit in accordance with its understanding of Catholic values in the matter of Lisa Reimer. Colley claims not to “have a beef with the Roman church in particular” but accuses the church of having a “truly astounding capacity for hypocrisy” and that it “seems particularly adept” at it, putting the lie to his hypocritical claim. Colley even has the audacity to quote Jesus’ saying, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” without seeing that he himself is engrossed in casting stones at the Catholic church as if he had no sin himself. That is truly astounding

hypocrisy. Colley’s case for hypocrisy against the Catholic church is also completely phony. While accusing the church of hiding cases of pedophlia in its ranks, he never establishes (nor can he) that the church ever sanctioned such acts, which it regards as sinful. Therefore the church is not being morally hypocritical in this case, but morally consistent in a general sense, acting on its values, unlike Colley, who has revealed himself to be an anti-Catholic, antiChristian churchophobe.

Ken Lawrence Surrey

‘Now’ column a rare, honest look at church The Editor, Re: “Lesbian teacher exposes more church hypocrisy,” the Now, April 30. I’m in Grade 12, and recently in choir practise, my teacher held up a paper with a picture of her best friend, Lisa Reimer, and told the kids what had happened. Everyone was shocked and outraged, but perhaps that’s because we attend a public school, rather than a private Catholic school. I was looking for more information on this and stumbled across your article. It’s rare that one sees articles in the paper that are as frank and honest as

yours, and I just wanted to thank you for doing the public a service. Journalism has, of late, fallen prey to such political correctness and censorship that the truth is getting harder and harder to find. If you ask me, the Catholic church has become far too untouchable, and many papers are only perpetuating the problem. Thank you, and keep it up.

Krista Gibbard Surrey

Quote this, Colley

The Editor, Re: “Lesbian teacher exposes more church hypocrisy,” the Now, April 30. It’s a shame that the individual in the column feels she is being judged, but it is the church’s responsibility to address these kind of issues. How could they accept this teacher when it goes against the word of God? If you’re going to quote scripture, I suggest you quote all scriptures relating to this issue. Ephesians 5:5: “For this we know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God.”

The Editor, Re: “A manicured dumpsite,” the Now, April 27. Congratulations to Brian Fowler for his persistence and hard work to rid his community of an illegal dumpsite, despite the apparent initial reluctance of the City of Surrey to take any action. Such illegal dumps are not only a local eyesore, they encourage rodents and degrade the environment. I am very pleased to see that the City of Surrey will be taking some action. I trust Mr. Fowler will be overseeing their efforts to ensure that the bylaws are properly enforced. I did not have similar success a few years ago when local builders thought their building sites were a convenient dumping ground for their fast-food lunches and all of their building debris. The garbage was soon spread over the neighbourhood and into a “protected” salmon stream, but repeated phone calls and even letters and photos to the mayor and councillors resulted in no action. Silly me – I realize now I should have simply called the Now. I was the local “Adopt a Street” volunteer, but it became sadly apparent that the city gladly accepted my volunteer services to clean up the continuing mess that it shouldn’t have allowed in the first place. I resigned in disgust. It is worth noting that the Municipality of Whistler is very quick to enforce its unsightly premises and illegal dumpsite complaints. Maybe a few big black bears roaming the streets of Surrey looking for easy food would have the same effect here.

Thirty-three young women are in the game, so to speak, for a week of events that conclude with what promises to be a glitzy pageant Friday night (May 7) at Surrey’s Chandos Pattison Auditorium. Last November, Punni was bored one night when an internet search hit upon the Variety website. Surrey is a first-time host of the pageant. Until now, it’s been a Torontobased event. “It’s nice that it’s all happening in our hometown,” enthused Punni. She’s been helped along the way by her longtime friend, Rajneet Johal. “Without her,” Punni said, “I wouldn’t get anything done, honestly. She’s my sidekick.” Added Johal: “It kind of feels like I’ve been doing it, being in the pageant. It’s been really fun.” Punni has hosted, or co-hosted, a pair of pageant-related fundraisers, including one at Schanks sports bar in New Westminster and, earlier, a party at a Vancouver nightclub. Combined, the events have generated close to $8,000 for Variety. She’s also sold nearly 50 tickets to Friday’s pageant, to family and friends. This fundraising effort is in addition to the $850 pageant entry fee, which is “significantly smaller,” organizers say, than the $2,150 fee needed to cover costs at the pageants in Toronto previously. No matter how much work and preparation is involved, Punni is glad to be involved in the pageant, which has diverted some of her attention away from psychology studies at Douglas College.

“Down the road when I’m old, I didn’t want to say, ‘Why didn’t I just do it and fill out that application?’” she said, explaining her decision to enter. “That kind of made me do it in the end. But boredom was a factor in it, for sure.” Lena Ma, a Queens University student who last December placed seventh in the Miss World pageant in South Africa, will pass on her Miss World Canada crown at the event in Surrey. The licensed franLENA MA chise is now presented by Burnaby-based Upstage This! Productions, operated by Katherine Grefner. UPT has run the Miss Teen Global pageant for the past six years in Vancouver, raising close to $100,000 for Variety. Global TV newscaster Chris Gailus is the event MC this Friday, and Tanya Memme, host of A&E’s Sell This House show and a former Miss World contestant for Canada, will make an appearance. For the general public, tickets are $25 to witness the May 7 pageants, a 7 p.m. start. Details are online at www.missworldcanada.org, or call 778-994-4922.

Make the escape to Galiano Island, the best-kept secret for a Vancouver getaway

things to know Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa’s awardwinning ‘eat’ restaurant. The picturesque atrium-style dining room with big beam ceilings and polished wood floors has a view overlooking the Pacific in the perfect melding of class and comfort. For a lighter meal, the Inn offers wood-fired pizza on the Oceanside Terrace.

2. For the spa: Let the soothing massage

and sounds of rippling water take you away at the nationally recognized Madrona del Mar Spa at Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa. The massage is given in an outdoor waterfront cabana beside a waterfall in the Inn’s gardens.

3. For the art: Galiano Oceanfront Inn and

Spa’s entryway displays Kunamokst, a recently unveiled mural mosaic created in collaboration with over 180 different artists, many of whom live on the island. The island is also home to art galleries such as Island’s Edge, Insight Art Gallery, Art and Soul Gallery, Galiano Art Gallery and many others.

4. For the environment: For a greener

stay, leave your car behind and take advantage of the Smart Cars the Inn has available for rental by guests. The island offers many other eco-friendly health living options including bicycle and kayak rentals.

5. For the stay: With an outdoor wood-

burning fireplace and an outdoor spa therapy tub, sublime meets scenic in the Inn’s private one bedroom suites. Or choose a beautiful Inn room, with a wood-burning fireplace, custom massage tables, art by Galiano artists, and of course, one of the Inn’s signature Oceanfront views.

Tucked away on an island just minutes from Vancouver, Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa might be the perfect place to escape the city for a soothing daytrip or a luxurious vacation. The innovative spa resort ensures a high-class, yet casual, experience from its award-winning wine list to its outdoor waterfall massages. You are invited to unwind in the calming privacy of the property with only 10 rooms and 10 one-bedroom suites. Couple Mel Gibb and Conny Nordin bought the land in 2001, designing and rebuilding the resort with casual luxury in mind. That’s why the Inn even offers pet-friendly stays in one oceanfront spa suite and one oceanfront villa suite. The designers personalized the experience with First Nations artwork and spa treatments unique only to the Madrona del Mar Spa. The spa is recognized across Canada for its

innovative treatments and serene atmosphere. As an organic and natural spa, treatments use the real, authentic ingredients for top-notch skin and body therapy. The Madrona del Mar Spa is the only health and wellness resort in North America where you will find the al-natural hemp treatment or the blackberry vino-therapy treatment, specially created for the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa. It was also the first spa to offer blueberry treatments in North America. And for those who wish to indulge in a chocolate adventure, all chocolate treatments use real, highend chocolate and include some delicious treats to snack on while drifting off. The ‘eat@galianoinn’ restaurant has attracted attention for its awardwinning wine list featuring over 200 locally produced wines. The restaurant recently took silver for its wine list in the 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International

Wine Festival awards and claimed two gold and one bronze awards in the 2008-2009 B.C. Wine List Competition. The Inn’s gardens will take you on a journey to a cedar cottage beside a waterfall where you can drift away in the sounds of the waves lapping and the birds singing overhead. For a longer journey, environment-friendly Smart cars, bicycles and kayaks are all available on the island. With gorgeous landscapes at every corner, the awe-inspiring getaway at the Galiano Oceanfront Inn and Spa is sure to leave you refreshed and renewed. ...choose a hot tub that suits you

Modern hot tubs only cost pennies a day to operate.

They have come a long way since the redwood tubs of the ‘70’s

things to know 1. HEALTH & SAFETY. Avoid tubular hand grips or

rails. Small children’s hands and wrists might get trapped behind them causing injury and unnecessary distress. Some manufacturers fit pillows inside their tubs. Behind fitted pillows it will be dark and warm, the perfect place for bacteria to breed, especially as they are above the water line and therefore out of reach of the sanitizer in the water. Beachcomber offers portable pillows in marine grade vinyl material, which you take in and out of the tub. This option is much healthier for you and your family!

Modern hot tub construction with the equipment under the access step is best for our climate. Maximizing foam insulation in all 4 walls of the hot tub shell cavity with a properly sealed hot tub cover is the number one method to reduce operating costs. The best modern hot tubs use reverse engineering to direct available horsepower

effectively so that each jetting location delivers just the right power for the best jetting massage. Hot tubs are very easy to maintain with a digital control pad to let you manage the heating and cleaning functions automatically so your hot tub is always ready for use. Computerized systems allow you to control

the maintenance of your hot tub. This saves you money in energy costs. An energy efficient hot tub will have an economy mode for when you’re away for long periods. Nothing could be simpler or more energy efficient.

manufacturers can only ever insulate at most three quarters of their tub. Check the quality and thickness of the cover too as this plays a crucial role in insulation. lawns less than 1/2 an acre, choose a 20” to 22” mower. For lawns between a 1/2 acre and 3/4 acre, choose a 21” to 22” mower with higher horsepower.

2. Also consider the type of terrain. For

hills, use a self-propelled lawn mower. For rough terrain, a high-wheel mower provides easy maneuverability. For mowing around obstacles, a rear bagger allows maneuverability for faster, easier work.

3. Push mowers are a fine choice if you

want exercise. However, if you have a larger yard (more than 10,000 square feet), rough terrain, health concerns or are worried about being out in the sun too long, consider a selfpropelled lawn mower.

4. Be aware of some of the

common terms: Mulching — cuts grass clippings into fine pieces that can help fertilize your lawn. Rear Bagger — collects clippings for an immaculate lawn. A rear bag is preferable to a side bag for use around fences, trees and obstacles. Side Discharge — clippings are dispersed back onto the lawn. Use if you have few obstacles to deal with or to cut high grass.

5. Also, consider the 3-In-1 option.

This unit can be converted from side discharge to rear bagger. A 3-in-1 lawn mower is capable of performing mulching, bagging and side discharge functions.

The type of lawnmower that is best for you depends on the size of your lawn, the size of your budget and your specific mowing needs. Make sure you understand your options to ensure you choose a mower that best suits you and your yard.

Are you tired of that old lawnmower that you picked up from a garage sale, or are you buying a lawnmower for the first time? Sometimes it is hard to decide what you need (or want) when it comes to lawnmowers. You will run across a variety of options, different qualities and a wide range of prices when shopping for a lawnmower. Learning about the options, and what they are intended for, will help you to choose the right product. There are many factors to consider that can affect lawn care needs, such as where you live, what the terrain is like and the size lawn you have, not to mention grass type and how fast it grows. Likewise, not all mowers have the same features or offer the same mowing options or performance. When you factor in environmental concerns as well as how much time, effort and money you are able to expend in caring for your lawn, choosing

the right mower may seem like a daunting task. At Fraser Valley Equipment, they can help make this task an easy one. But only you can make the final decision and choose which unit is the best for all your needs. Be sure to play with the mower, sit on the garden or lawn tractor and test every mechanism you can. Try the seat on the

riding mower, pull the recoil starter on the gas mower, operate the bail that adjusts the speed on the self-propelled mower. Does the mower convert easily between cutting operations? Do the wheels adjust easily or take some effort? Look at your choices. Ask questions. Only then can you be assured that the mower you buy will be the mower that best fits your personal needs.

Student art on view at Guildford Some 120 works are on display at Guildford Town Centre as part of the 2010 Surrey Secondary Schools’ Art Exhibit. The show offers a diverse mix of computer art, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking and 3D pieces, including Saxophone Player (right), a print created by Milan Mantle, a Grade 12 student at Sullivan Heights Secondary, and the Origami Human sculpture (left) fashioned by Grade 10 student Joanne Wong. “This is the best art installation in many years,” Marc Pelech, art teacher at Sullivan Heights, told the Now. Students from 14 Surrey schools have their works on display in the mall’s north-south corridor, between The Bay and Sears stores, until May 9. A student awards reception will be held at the mall’s central court area on Wednesday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m., as part of Youth Week activities. Pelech and fellow Surrey teachers Myra Morgan and Cathy Bayley helped organize the exhibit. — Tom Zillich

Eggplant, as mentioned above, is technically a fruit, not a vegetable. There are common characteristic differences between fruit and vegetables. Fruit is usually the product of a plant or tree and contains seeds or a pit, while vegetables are the stalks, roots and leaves of the plants themselves. For example, apples are obviously fruit, as they are a product of a plant and have seeds. Broccoli is a vegetable, as it

is the stalk of a plant. Today’s consumer most commonly differentiates fruits from vegetables on the basis of sweetness, or lack thereof. Although determination by judging sweetness would be generally correct, it would eliminate such fruits as tomatoes, peppers, avocados and eggplants. There are many types of eggplants that are cultivated around the world. The variety of eggplant that is most common in our markets is the pear-shaped, deep purplecoloured species, appropriately named the “common Eggplants have a eggplant.” Therefore, I will spongy flesh with a focus on them specifically. While shopping for all the wonderful produce our stores have to offer, how many of you pass up the opportunity of putting a couple of eggplants in your basket? More often than not, this wonderful fruit stays in the produce bin rather than making it to a family’s dinner table. There seems to be countless people who

Lower-carb lasagna possible with this fruit go about doing this, other than cutting one open, is by choosing a male eggplant over a female one. Rather than going deep into plant horticulture, I will simply say there are male and female differences. Detecting these differences in eggplant is not as difficult as it may seem. Male eggplants are usually more rounded on the lower half of the pear shape, and have a smoother bottom, where the flower base is located. Female eggplants have a more slender pear shape, and you can feel that the flower base at the bottom is indented. In comparison, you will find that male eggplant usually have fewer seeds than a female one. Regardless of which eggplant you purchase, there are other ways to remove some of the bitter flavour. Simply salt slices of the eggplant and let drain for one to two hours. Although this is effective for removing bitterness, it also removes a lot of the water content. Therefore, this step may work better with some recipes than others. There are many great dishes that you can prepare with eggplant. They can be halved, stuffed, grilled and baked. Stew them with tomatoes and other vegetables to make a ratatouille, or use slices to

Flushing of watermains is required to remove sediments and to maintain water quality. This may result in your water supply appearing cloudy due to the sediments. Since some staining of laundry may result and some industrial processes may be affected, we recommend the following. • Run your cold water tap until the water clears up

replace the pasta for a lower-carbohydrate lasagna. Or try making Greek moussaka, a very delicious casserole made with eggplant, ground lamb and cream sauce.

• Check the water supply prior to doing laundry

Dear Chef Dez; I tried pan-frying cubes of eggplant for a recipe, and they sucked up all the oil I had in the pan. Is this normal and, if not, how can I prevent this from happening? — Angie D., Abbotsford Dear Angie; Yes, this is completely normal. The great thing about this is it soaks up flavour at the same time! Since eggplants are very mild, this makes for an excellent opportunity to add some flavour to them. If you did want to avoid soaking up as much oil, you could accomplish this by coating the eggplant with flour, beaten eggs and a breading before pan-frying (if the recipe allows for this). A vegetable-based oil spray in the pan works great as well. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez.com or P.O. ❚ LIVING ❚PARENTING

It’s a good week to get prepared for an emergency came to the house regarding Emergency Preparedness Week (May 2-8) made me rethink the importance of planning. A few years back, I was working in Kelley SCARSBROOK Vancouver at the trade and conven-

I’m not exactly the best planner in the world. I tend to consider myself good under pressure and someone who can think on her feet. However, a recent flyer that

tion centre. I was sitting at my desk, typing away, when I began to feel a tremor. Then I saw my pen fly off my desk. I looked out the window and saw boats in the marina bumping together madly. It was then I realized we were having an earthquake.

I remember running to my office door and standing in the doorway. People in the office had no idea what was going on. Some remained in their seats and others ran in the hall, yelling wildly. I just stood in that doorway, thinking to myself,

“Wow, I really hope that standing in a doorway is what you are supposed to do in an earthquake, because if not, I’m a goner.” Luckily, the earthquake wasn’t a substantial one. The people in our office returned to their work, and life went on. But it does

make you think: What if it was the big one? Do we really know what to do? And I think that’s the whole point of Emergency Preparedness Week. We need to think about what are the right things to do in case of a fire, flood, power outage or an earthquake. It’s even more imperative as a parent with children to be able to know, with absolute certainty, that you can take care of your family in an emergency — and that everyone in the household knows what to do. There is a website that helps educates you on how to be more prepared: www. getprepared.ca. It lists all the risks we need to think about, and provides an online planner that takes you step by step through the planning process, in the event of an emergency. It takes about 20 minutes to do, and then you can print it off and review it with family members. I also think doing a test-run in your home is a good idea. We’ve decided to run through our plan with our children and then pretend we are having an emergency. Should anything happen, I want to ensure that they know what to do in the house. Here are just a few things to think about when putting together your family plan: ❚ What are your safe exits from home and neighbourhood? ❚ What are your designated meeting places to reunite with family? ❚ Who is the designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable? ❚ Who are the contact persons, both nearby and out of town? ❚ Do you have your health information all in one accessible place? ❚ If you have a pet, do you have a place for it to stay? ❚ Does everyone in your home know the location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical box, gas valve and floor drain? You can also learn how to put together an emergency kit yourself, or places you can go to purchase one to have on hand. This week helped me remember that planning is very important and, as a parent, it’s even more important to have a plan in place for my family. And it turns out that standing in a doorway isn’t recommended anymore in the event of an earthquake, because the swinging door could have knocked me out.

❚ LIVING ❚SURREY HOSPICE SOCIETY

‘Dove’ release Saturday It’s a dove-release event with a difference. Surrey Hospice Society’s annual Walk of Remembrance and Dove Release Memorial is set for this Saturday, May 8 at Bear Creek Park. The event offers a time of healing and of helping others, organizers say. Surrey Hospice Society is a non-profit society that supports people facing the end of life and their families as they move through the grief process. The annual Walk of Remembrance and Dove Release event is both a celebration of life and a fundraiser. Participants raise much-needed funds for hospice by taking pledges from friends, family, neighbours and co-workers while honouring the memory of a loved one. Participants may submit the names of their loved ones to be read aloud as the doves soar into the sky and circle overhead before “heading home.” The doves are actually trained white pigeons with homing skills for returning home safely. “This special day provides an uplifting ceremony and also a time for reflection,” said Marion Brandner, executive director of Surrey Hospice Society. “And while people are taking personal time to release, remember and renew, they are raising funds to support the work of hospice so that we can continue to help people who are suffering with loss.” The day begins with the ceremonial dove release. and love, white memorial doves can comfort those who have recently lost a loved one. Their release into the sky represents a time of cleansing and letting go. “We have found that honouring a lost loved one this way can be a reverent and beautiful healing experience for people who are grieving,” Brandner said. “It is another way for Surrey Hospice to reach out and provide ‘companions for the journey.’” Participants will then walk through the spring gardens at Bear Creek Park, celebrating the beauty of life and renewing themselves as the earth bursts forth with a new season. It is important to recognize that this is also an opportunity for the community to support the important work of hospice, Brandner added. Surrey Hospice Society receives minimal government funding; two-thirds of the society’s budget is acquired by fundraising. The society’s services – which include visits to the home, hospital and hospice, bereavement support groups for all ages, phone and mail outreach and professional clinical counselling – are provided free of charge. The Walk of Remembrance and Dove Release Memorial starts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Bear Creek Park Pavilion, across from the Surrey Arts Centre. For registration and pledge forms, see www.surreyhospice. com, call 604-543-7006 or drop by the resource centre, 13857 68th Ave., Surrey.

Surrey United chases Provincial Cup double

With two Michael BOOTH teams on the Sports Editor field, it will be double the fun for Surrey United at the Provincial Cup finals in two weeks in Victoria. The Cloverdale club closed in on a sweep of the two biggest club titles in B.C. with semifinal round wins in the both the men’s and women’s open division’s Saturday afternoon in Coquitlam. The Surrey United women got things rolling with a 1-0 win over the Burnaby Canadians, a result echoed shortly afterward by the Surrey United Firefighters over Columbus. “We’re going for the big one now and that’s been our goal all season,” said Firefighters coach Niall Thompson. “This year we wanted to win as many trophies as we can and to be the best team. The guys are focused and we really want this. Coming into the final it’s kind of a relief to know we’ve made it this far but now the hard work starts again.” In the men’s game, the two Vancouver Metro Soccer league premier division rivals each spent

one half carrying the play. In the first half, it was Columbus that enjoyed the upper hand, controlling possession pressuring Surrey’s defence. Surrey goalkeeper Drew Smiley needed to come up with a huge stop before the break to keep the game scoreless. In the second half it was Surrey’s turn to take charge. Just two minutes after play resumed, Angus Burke sent a pass to Lucas Barrett, who narrowly missed on a shot from just outside the box. Midway through the half, Surrey enjoyed another golden opportunity when Joseph Martin set up Jeff Clarke in tight only to have Columbus keeper Thomas Lindley deflect the shot with his foot. Surrey finally broke the scoreless deadlock in the 75th minute on a 25-yard free kick by Rizal Ganief. The hard shot landed short of where the diving Lindley expected and skipped over him into the net. “We had great build-up just before the goal,” Thompson said. “We created a couple of good chances and you could see momen-

tum was going our way.” Columbus tried to exert some pressure in search of the equalizer but the Vancouver press was easily handled by Surrey defenders Jeff Skinner, Steve McCauley, Vinny Stewart and Myles Davis. Surrey now takes on Victoria Gorge in the provincial capital in two week’s time. Thompson said the extra week off will be welcomed by his players. “We need to rest up because a lot of guys were playing through injuries,” he said. “I’ve left the training until Thursday so the guys can have some days off, rest the body before we begin to prepare for Gorge.” Meanwhile, the Surrey United women are one win away from extending their Provincial Cup reign to seven years after dispatching Burnaby Saturday. Surrey took control of the contest early as Natalie Halcro and Katie Thorlakson missed on clearcut scoring chances in the opening 15 minutes of play. Surrey finally opened the scoring in the 18th minute when national

team veteran Randee Hermus converted a well-placed Kate Qually corner kick. The Cloverdale women came close to padding the lead when Thorlakson rattled two shots off the woodwork but Burnaby escaped the threat trailing 1-0 at the break. In the second half, Surrey’s power outage continued but United’s defence kept Burnaby in check throughout, allowing the defending champs to advance with the 1-0 win. “Burnaby is a good team and they pushed us hard right to the last minute,” said Clarke, who also serves as the women’s head coach. “We prepared well, we came ready to play and we played a good game. Burnaby’s goaltending was great and their team as a whole bent but didn’t break. It was only 1-0 so all they needed was one chance and we would be having a different conversation right now. I was glad to get out of it for sure.” Surrey will play the North Shore Renegades in the Provincial Cup final on Vancouver Island in two week’s time.

golf report Surrey, ND teams strike gold – 8 times

So Mr. Minister, let’s talk golf. “Well, you’re talking to the right person. At one point I was the captain of the Yellowknife Golf Club. “While some may think golf is new in the north it’s not. We have been at for over 60 years.” The early days of your golf course sound very interesting. “The golf course was built on sand and our greens were made up of waste oil and sand, mixed and then shaped. Our tee boxes were made of sand and we dug down deep to get the wet sand to set up the tee box. About 15 years ago the environmentalists got on to us about the waste oil greens and they were right — it was time for a change. “By the way, to smooth out our greens we pulled a large mat with a bar to give them some semblance of smoothness.” According to the minister, they moved quickly. (I have a feeling that the legislature in the far north doesn’t spend much time arguing about things when they have to be done.) The club decided to find a company that could provide them with artificial greens that would stand up to the harsh weather. It wasn’t cheap. All 18 greens are now made up of sand and rubber pellets mixed together at cost of $35,000 a hole. The expansion from nine to 18 took place about 10 years ago. At the same time they got rid of the sand tee boxes and now have mats. This is almost a case of “build it and they will come.” The new course has a fringe of grass around the greens but with all the sand, the course bunkers and fairways blend together. They even have some water hazards. We are up and rolling them here. How about in your part of the world? “We generally get started the first day of summer — don’t forget a lot of groups can play in a single day.” (Such is golfing when you have 24 hours of daylight.) They hold an around-the-clock golf tournament and last year 375 played in the tournament. McLeod loves to talk about the athletes from CFL to members of various NHL teams that have played in the tournament. Where do the golfers come from? “We have them from all over the world, from Asia, Europe — even Trinidad. In past tournaments Sandra Post and Dan Halldorson, two of our best-known golfers in this country, arrived to offer some lessons and play in the midnight tournament. He said he once got to play with Jackie Parker and Wes Montgomery. Jackie, yes. Wes I don’t know. So if the thought of tee time around 1 a.m. turns your crank, get hold of the Yellowknife Golf Club and see if they have any room for you. You can reach me at preimer@canwest.com

Surrey and North Delta teams emerged with a combined eight Coastal Cup titles from championship weekend April 24-25 in Richmond. The Coastal Cup covers all ages and levels of youth soccer, with six age groups from Under-13 to U-18. Each age group has two boys and two girls divisions — the “A Cup” for the top level teams and the “B Cup” for all other teams. With seven titles won — three boys and four girls — Surrey was the most successful district represented in Richmond. Leading the way for the Surrey contingent was the Guildford AC and Whalley SC organizations. Guildford edged Surrey FC Pegasus 2-1 to win the girls’ U-13A Cup final and combined with Surrey United on Metro

level sides that won two other titles. The Guildford-Surrey entry captured the U-14 boys A Cup with a 2-1 win over the North Shore Selects while the girls from the same age group doubled up on the Victoria Capitals 2-1. Meanwhile, the Whalley Falcons soared to a 2-0 win over Langley in the boys’ U-15 B Cup final while the Whalley Canadian Rocks were tripped up 3-0 by Comox Valley in the boys’ U-13 B Cup finale. The Surrey Selects, a joint team from Whalley and Surrey Youth, squeaked past Richmond 1-0 in the boys’ U-16 A Cup event. Surrey Youth Pegasus blew away Tsawwassen 5-1 to win the girls’ U-16 A Cup title but the Surrey FC Jaguars lost 1-0 on penalty kicks to

Coquitlam in the girls U-13 B Cup event. Cloverdale’s Surrey United Force took top honours in the girls’ U-16 B Cup with a 3-1 win over Victoria Gorge but the club’s U17 Lions lost 3-2 on spot shots to Lakehill in the B Cup title game. North Delta United rounded out the list of local champs with a 2-1 penalty kick win over the Cowichan Wolves in the boys’ U-18 A Cup finale. Semiahmoo United narrowly missed the girls U-18 B Cup award with a 1-0 loss to the North Shore Riptide. Winners of the U-14, U-16 and U-18 A Cup have qualified to play the Interior champions in July for the provincial title and the right to represent B.C. at nationals in October.

The event attracted to 20 men’s and 16 women’s teams representing curling clubs from across the province and from Alaska down to Texas. In the end, the Cloverdale teams earned the right to represent B.C. at the Dominion Curling Club Championships in Charlottetown in November. The Cory McLaughlin rink

(with Danielle Callens, Crystal Murray and Corri Roberts) defeated Richmond’s Team Thompson in the women’s final to advance to the national competition. In the men’s draw, Cloverdale’s Stu Harris rink (Dean Lunn, Todd O’Dell and Bob Crocker) topped Team Black from Penticton to advance as the men’s representative. It is the first time in the PIC’s 13-year history to have both cup champions hail from the same curling club. The Dominion Curling Club Championship is Canada’s first

national championship for club curlers. After winning their respective provincial and territorial playdowns, men’s and women’s club champions from across the country — including all 10 provinces, three territories and a separate entry for Northern Ontario — will compete at Prince Edward Island’s Charlottetown and Cornwall Curling Clubs from Nov. 23 - 28. All profits from the Dominion Curling Club Championship are directed to the Canadian Paraplegic Association and the development of curling initiatives in communities across the country.

Had an interesting conversation about golf with the Honourable Bob McLeod, who happens to be the Minister of Tourism, Industry and Investment for the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. He was in Vancouver to talk about a lot of things related to the north and plans for the upcoming years. Their pavilion was one of the most popular of the Olympic Games.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
