More tolls could be in the picTed COLLEY ture for Surrey drivers if TransLink Staff Reporter can’t find another way to pay for a $1.2-billion replacement for the Pattullo Bridge announced this week. TransLink’s Ken Hardie said Thursday the transportation authority plans to ask the provincial and federal governments to help with funding. “The only other way to pay for it would be with tolls. Nobody wants to see more tolls, so we’re looking at ways to avoid that,” Hardie said. The plan calls for a new six-lane span about 100 metres upstream from the existing bridge. The price tag, Hardie said, will be big.

Think Olympics. Tom ZILLICH With the streets and highways Staff Reporter of Metro Vancouver about to face the crush of post-Labour Day commuters, the boss of TransLink is encouraging people to return to their way of getting around during the Winter Olympics last February. “With the fall season coming, we encourage transit customers and motorists to consider the same TravelSmart options they had during the Olympics,” Ian Jarvis, CEO of TransLink, told the media. “In doing so, they will help us to use Metro Vancouver’s transportation network in the most efficient and effective way.”

There’s beating the bus and then Ted COLLEY there’s leaving it for dead in the Staff Reporter ditch. On Wednesday, three Kwantlen Polytechnic University students set out to test three methods of travelling between the school’s Surrey and Langley campuses: bicycle, sneaker and transit bus. The Beatthe-Bus competition was put on by the Kwantlen Student Association and, given the name, the outcome never seemed to be in doubt. The bike finished the 19-kilometre route first with a time of 59 minutes. The runner came in second at 66 minutes and the bus finished dead last with a time of 79 minutes.
