❚SUSPECTED MURDER-SUICIDE IN CLOVERDALE/FLEETWOOD

‘Tragic end to tragic night’ A young woman lay bleeding Tom ZYTARUK in the middle of a residential Staff Reporter street in Cloverdale just after midnight Thursday, after being shot multiple times. She died at the scene while paramedics worked on her. Shortly after, the man police were looking for shot himself dead in a pickup truck in a driveway at 8555 152nd St. “A tragic end to a tragic night,” Surrey RCMP Const. Peter Neily said. Police say the woman died in a targeted and “domestic-related homicide.” Cpl. Dale Carr said of the man, “We have not conclusively linked him as the person responsible for the murder.” The names of the deceased had not been released by press time. The woman, believed to be in her early 20s, was killed on 67th Avenue near 193rd Street. Neighbouring streets and laneways were cordoned off with a criss-cross of yellow police tape Thursday while investigators pored over the murder scene. One of the bullets pierced the window of a house about a block away. Don Dercole, who lives several doors from where the shooting happened, said he was fast asleep at 12:30 a.m. when the Surrey RCMP received calls of shots fired, but said his neighbour had told him he’d heard six shots. “Pop, pop, pop,” he said. “It’s close to home, isn’t it?” ❚ In White Rock, police are investigating the discovery of a woman’s body on West Beach Tuesday. RCMP Inspector Al Ramey said the unidentified body was found at the high tide line on a stretch of beach adjacent to the 14300-block of Marine Drive at about 8 a.m. She was fully clothed, Ramey said, and three hours later, investigators were still trying to determine the cause of death. “We are treating this as a suspicious death right now and, in an abundance of caution, members of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, have been called in to assist in the investigation,” Ramey said. “We don’t know how long she’s been there. She was found about 75 feet off the tracks, toward the water, on the beach.” —with file from Ted Colley
