The City of Richmond has hatched a plan to build its own super green mini geothermal power station in the city centre. It is hoped the new “energy centre” — which, if built, would draw heat from under the ground via pipes and pumps — will initially provide enough energy to heat homes and water in the soon-to-be-built Remy and Alexandra Gate’s 453 units in west Cambie.

If successful, the city and its partners then envisage branching out and providing geothermal heat energy from the sustainable underground source to the entire Alexandra neighbourhood. The $4-million proposal, which went before city council’s general purposes committee on Monday, calls for “underground well and piping infrastructure” to be located under park land between Odlin and Cambie roads, with the energy centre located on park land just to the south. The move is part of the city’s
goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. City engineers estimate that providing geothermal energy to the Remy and Alexandra Gate development alone will cut between 200 to 600 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year. “This is a landmark step for us,” said Coun. Bill McNulty. John Irving, the city’s engineering director, told council that the energy centre building could initially be around 2,500 square feet in size, with potential

Irving added that the building would be built with the surrounding environment in mind, but could also be designed to show off its working parts to the public. Richmond’s Wendy Phillips has won the coveted Governor General Literacy Award for her inaugural children’s book, Fishtailing. Phillips was interviewed by the News last week after she had just heard that her book about teenage angst snagged her the Governor General nomination. At the time Phillips said, “I’m so astounded and extremely thrilled. I’m honoured to be in the company of top children literary writers.” Over at MacNeill secondary, where Phillips is a teacher/ librarian, her colWendy Phillips leagues are ecstatic, said principal CarolLyn Sakata. “We have someone famous in our midst,” she quipped. “We are elated and thrilled to have Wendy recognized like that. She is a fabulous teacher and librarian, who really connects with her students in a very personal way.” Phillips’ close relationship with her students comes across in Fishtailing, Sakata added. “You can see the connection she has with her students in the lines in her powerful book,” said Sakata. “Wendy is a fabulous role model for her students.” Besides the great accolade, Phillips receives a $25,000 cash prize. Phillips, along with the other 13 winners — authors, illustrators and translators — will receive her award from Governor General David Johnston on Thursday, Nov. 25, during a ceremony at Rideau Hall, Ottawa. Stay together by eating together Sitting and talking at the dinner table can bond families

Remember Sunday night dinners? For that matter, any night of the week when everyone in the family sat together at the dining room table and talked about their day? In many families across Richmond, those days are few and far between, according to Georgina Patko, director of community relations at Richmond’s Touchstone Family Association. “Families are incredibly busy and often parents and their children are eating on the fly, not at the table together,” said Patko. “Parents lose a wonderful opportunity to bond with their children and find out more about their lives.” To encourage local families to enjoy more family meals together, Touchstone Family Association has launched its Eating Together website (www.eatingtogether.ca). “We want to heighten local families’ awareness to the importance of eating together to foster communication between family members,” said Patko. “It’s not good enough to just eat together, they need to interact in a positive manner.” The idea behind Eating Together, an initiative of the nonprofit organization which helps local families in distress, is to foster the idea that families who eat together, stay together. “It’s such a simple message but it’s an important one,” Patko added. “Touchstone sees families when they are dealing with serious issues. “We hope that by educating families we might mitigate some of their issues by sitting together over a meal.”

On top of that, during the week of February 21 to 28, 2011, Touchstone, in partnership with local restaurants, is launching its version of Dine Out Vancouver, with a twist. “We wanted to create something new and exciting, similar to the Dine Out Vancouver that will raise awareness about Eating Together and our foundation,” said Patko. During Eating Together Week campaign local restaurants, such as Steveston Seafood House, Mondo Eatery, Gudrun, Mad Greek and many others, will give 25 per cent of a family’s bill to Touchstone Family Association. “We hope that Eating Together will become a yearly event,” added Pantko. “Mayor Malcolm Brodie has declared Feb.

A Liberal government would make education a top priority, cancel the Conservative government’s $6-billion corporate tax cut, tackle Canada’s $56-billion deficit, introduce a program that would pay people to take time off work to care for sick or dying family members and decriminalize marijuana possession. Those were among the pledges made by federal Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff at a town hall meeting at Richmond secondary school Friday. In exchange, he asked all students who will be 18 for the next federal election to vote.

The meetings use the Internet and interactive social media to engage young voters. Participants from across the country can ask questions via Twitter and Facebook and can read real-time blogs and listen to podcasts. (Visit www.liberal.ca/ openmike.) Ignatieff said only one out of five voters who had just reached voting age (18) bothered to vote in the last federal election. He encouraged students to take an interest in politics, saying it is a good way for young people to rise quickly up the ladder, and cited his own experience. Ignatieff was just 21 when he became the national Liberal youth leader under Liberal Leader Pierre Trudeau.

After a sluggish 2009, the construction industry has rebounded in Richmond by breaking records. As of the end of October, the City of Richmond has processed 1,511 building permits with a construction value of more than $769 million. This far exceeds the $163 million value in 2009 and beats Richmond’s previous record of $658 million in 2006. While there are a number of large projects that contributed to the increase, such as the development of a new IKEA store, another factor in the increase is the fact some projects were pushed forward this year to take advantage of current development cost charges (DCC)
before they rose in the fall of 2010. Some of the large projects that received building permits include: ! Onni Development project at Elmbridge and Hollybridge — 234 market condos, 70 live/work dwellings, 20 affordable low-end market rental units and approximately 67,000 square feet of ground floor retail, including space for a large grocery store ! IKEA — 350,000 square foot store relocation and redevelopment, increasing staff to 535 people, providing 1,400 parking spots, road improvements to Jacombs, Sweden Way, Bridgeport and Knight Streets, $133,000 in public art and 536 new trees
! Cranberry processing facility — new cranberry processing facility to be constructed in East Richmond serving the cranberry farmers in the Lower Mainland, replacing the old facility on No. 6 Road Other large projects in progress include: !TransLink facility — 120,000 square foot maintenance and office buildings for 250 to 350 buses. City received $1.77 million for a fully furnished 33 space, 3,400 square foot child daycare facility, 1.87 acre park with a trail connection to the Fraser River, $20,000 contribution towards the expanded Hamilton Community Centre, Fraser River dike upgrades and improved sidewalks along frontage roads.

Irving said in his report that the Alexandra District Energy Utility (ADEU) represents one of the “most significant advancements to date towards meeting the city’s sustainability and (greenhouse gas) reduction goals.” The committee approved the introduction of the bylaw which would allow the first phase of the project to go forward. Full city council approval and a public hearing will be the project’s next step.

An annual conference aimed at helping parents understand their kids better and help them with their schooling takes place Saturday at MacNeill Secondary School (6611 No. 4 Road). The annual Learning and the Brain conference is now in its 12th year. Last year, roughly 500 parents attended the conference. Organizers awed at re-opening of Artisans’ Galleria BY ALAN CAMPBELL

It’s a day they thought would never be possible. The Community Arts Council of Richmond (CACR) will officially open its new Artisans’ Galleria this Saturday, just two months after it shut the doors of its Steveston gallery for the last time. The CACR was even in the process of packing up
or selling off its remaining fixtures and fittings in September when it received a surprise call of support from a woman representing a prominent Richmond business. Now, after thinking life was ending for the gallery due to provincial art funding cuts, the CACR will throw open the doors to its new premises at the Garden City Shopping Centre. “We are overjoyed,”
said the CACR’s treasurer Margaret Stephens. “This is a real phoenix from the ashes story and it gives us a chance to continue to support the arts in Richmond, as we have been doing for the last 40 years. “It’s a day that we really didn’t think was going to happen and we can’t wait to get started this weekend.” Gary and Terry McPhail, who are owners of real estate management com-
pany The McPhail Group, were behind the galleria’s last ditch saviour, offering the CACR one of its units at the shopping centre on Garden City and Blundell roads. Since the News reported two months ago about the CACR’s change of luck, the organization’s members have been busy transforming the new space into a bright, “enchanting” gallery. “It really came out of

Try stone-cold sobriety Rich Coleman’s remarks about the new drinking and driving rules are not helping drivers, pub owners or police. The MLA for Fort Langley-Aldergrove said people have “misinterpreted” the rules to mean that they can’t have a drink at all and get behind the wheel. But hasn’t that been the message of the government, police, ICBC and MADD for years? The days when it was considered normal to have a drink, or two, or six, and weave your way home are long gone. The tough new rules only changed the penalties for hitting various stages of drunk driving, including longer driving suspensions for those who were caught with more than .05 blood alcohol content. It has long been considered dangerous to have that much booze in your system. The problem with people who drink and drive is often that they either play down how much they’ve had to drink, or that they believe they “can hold their liquor.” Coleman is the top cop for a government that has promised it will be tough on crime. For him to suggest that cops are being too harsh with legislation that his own government introduced is strange. If people are too afraid now to have one or two drinks with dinner, good. If the new rules cause more people to take a cab, or assign a designated driver, that will undoubtedly save lives. As for bar and restaurant owners losing money — tough. Our society has been moving towards a saner appreciation of the dangers of drunk driving for more than half a century. If that costs bars a few bucks, it’s nothing compared to the human lives that could be saved. Ask any Mounties who have pulled over drunks, or who have cleaned up after a fatal alcohol-fueled crash, whether they prefer drivers to have one or two drinks or none before hitting the road. The Editor, I’d like to offer congratulations to the Richmond volunteer who organized the reception after the Remembrance Day ceremony at city hall on Thursday. It was wonderful to see how many people (of every generation), participated and how happy they were to warm up and spend some time talking. Thanks also to Tim Hortons for providing refreshments, the Friends of Richmond Archives for their displays, and to the students of RC Palmer choir, whose voices were beautiful. A thought for next year — is there a particular reason that the cenotaph is situated on the corner of Granville and No.3? It was very difficult to see the ceremony and it occurred to me that perhaps it could be moved to the south side of the building where the steps would provide bleachers for the ever-increasing crowd. Successor handcuffed to Campbell He says he’s stepping down as premier, but Premier Gordon Campbell’s vow to stay on at the helm until a successor is chosen is creating some awkward tension within the B.C. Liberal government. And that tension is threatening to boil over into public view, with some very messy infighting looming on the horizon. Energy Minister Bill Bennett, who seems incapable of not speaking his mind, has been the first B.C. Liberal MLA to go public with his view that Campbell should leave now, with an interim leader being appointed in his stead. I’ve talked to several of his caucus colleagues — some in cabinet and some outside of it — who agree with his assessment. We’ll see if anyone else goes public with their thoughts. Others — such as Community Development Minister Kevin Krueger — think it’s just fine for their boss to remain where he is. The biggest problem with Campbell sticking around for a fairly long time (it will be at least late February, if not later, before the party gets around to choosing a new leader) is that it handcuffs his successor and diminishes the party’s chance of essentially “re-branding” itself along lines more palatable to the public than

what it’s been getting from a Campbell-led government. The looming change in leadership is also problematic for the government because it will occur at arguably the most critical time of the year — the introduction of a new budget, and a throne speech that outlines the proposed legislative agenda. If Campbell remains in charge for those two pivotal events, how can anyone in government make a credible argument that things are going to be done differently in the year ahead? And as long as Campbell remains premier, it will remain very difficult for any of his would-be successors to criticize him or make a clean break with any of the policies associated with him. To offer just a few examples, what if a leadership candidate proposed to raise the minimum wage, restore arts funding and scrap that 15 per cent income tax cut that Campbell sprung on an unsuspecting B.C. Liberal caucus? None of those policies is particularly radical and it’s quite conceiv-
able a candidate (or two) will adopt at least one of them. But that would mean taking on the boss, and it’s hard to see how a candidate could remain in cabinet if they clash with Campbell. There are two precedents for the B.C. Liberal caucus to fall back on. In 1991 the Social Credit caucus chose Rita Johnston to be premier, taking over from a disgraced Bill Vander Zalm. And in 1999, the NDP caucus chose Dan Miller to take over the premier’s office from Glen Clark. There are those who say the B.C. Liberal party constitution does not allow a party leader to be chosen in any method other than that agreed to by members of the party. But that is a meaningless argument. Parliamentary tradition stipulates that a caucus — not a political party — can choose the person to lead that caucus. It may be possible, in fact, for the caucus to vote for a new premier — even if Campbell remains the leader of the B.C. Liberal party. I’m filing this column on Monday. The B.C. Liberal caucus meets on Friday. By announcing he was stepping down, Campbell avoided one potentially divisive caucus meeting. But I’m not sure he can emerge unscathed from the next one. The Restorative Justice Program provides troubled youth with another option to put their life back on track. It gives them another chance to learn to respect people and their property and hopefully lead a productive life. The Editor, I got the impression that selling poppies for Remembrance Day became a non-event this year. The City of Richmond and the Touchstone Family Place must be commended for carrying on the Restorative Justice Program for another three years. This innovative program saves very valuable court time. On top of that, it gives the offenders in general and the vulnerable youth in particular another opportunity to mend their ways. Reporter Nelson Bennett has mentioned that nearly half of the participants in this program are 14-15 years old. This indeed is alarming. The Editor, Re: “Disease expert’s excuse is ‘hogwash’,” News, Nov. 12. This is not just a B.C. phenomenon; I live in Alberta and I’m facing the same ignorance and deception about how prevalent Lyme disease is in our province. Three test results from the U.S. are positive for Lyme but the doctors here won’t even consider that my symptoms are Lyme-related, they don’t know what it is, but they are firm in their belief that it’s not Lyme, because it’s
‘rare’ in Alberta. Hogwash! I am going to the U.S. in a month for a very aggressive six-week IV therapy treatment protocol to regain my quality of life. enough, and we were out of paper plates. My meager gesture of goodwill felt like a failure. But then I thought of a friend’s chili that I had dug out of the freezer on a particularly rough night last week, and how much I had appreciated her gift. I hadn’t thought once about the caliber of the chili; it warmed our tummies and my heart just knowing someone cared. Then I thought of all the times I had regretted not speaking up or acting on my good intentions. My regrets were always over what I didn’t do rather than the little imperfections when I did act. I took the muffins over, on a tinfoil wrapper piece of cardboard. My neighbour, who doesn’t speak much English, beamed. And the few muffins I kept at home actually tasted really good. It was cold last night. I went in to check on my five-year-old before I crawled off to bed. He has a habit of kicking off his blankets and then waking me at 4 a.m. with his cold cries. As I tucked the colourful quilt around his shoulders I also felt all warm and snug, for my mother had made this quilt for him. Each of my sons has a “Grandma Blanket” as we call them and I have to smile whenever I think of these quirky quilts. They are not your Martha Stewart pictureperfect quilts; each has a different size and different fabrics. Tristan’s is a gender neutral print, with both, princesses and dragons, on it as we didn’t know if we were having a girl or a boy. Liam’s has animals and Xavier’s is the only real boy one, with dinosaurs and black trim. We knew what gender he was going to be. But there are no complaints from my sons about the colours and no long car trip or night away would be complete without the Grandma Blankets along. My sons never tire of hearing the story of their quilts. “Long ago, before you were born, Grandma was so happy she was going to have a grandchild. She wanted to make a quilt to help keep the baby warm. So she went to the fabric store and picked out some colourful fabric and then stitched it up, stuffing the quilt with lots of love. So now, as I snuggle you up in this blanket, you are being snuggled in grandma love.” My mother-in-law also started quilts for our boys. She is a real quilter, with a room filled with the most beautiful fabrics. Rather than grabbing a colourful childish pre-made quilt pattern, she carefully pieced together just the right shades of exquisite prints into intricate carefully stitched patterns. But seven years later, my sons have yet to receive a quilt. These beautiful beginnings have joined all the other UFOs (UnFinished Objects) in her quilting room. When

The Port is bringing 2,000 square metres of park improvements to the North Shore. To make rail operations more efficient, Port Metro Vancouver and its partners are building a new rail bridge over Lynn Creek. And while they’re at it, they’re upgrading the nearby Harbourview Park to make it more enjoyable for everyone. The project represents a unique collaboration between government and industry to improve land in the community, while enabling growth in international trade.
The goal of the park improvements is to preserve and enhance the historical, recreational and natural resources of Harbourview Park. In other words, making a good park even better. Among the planned improvements are a revamped parking lot, a new lookout with a seating area, and the restoring of native trees and shrubs.

The new rail bridge is important too. Rail is already considered the most fuel efficient method of transportation for bulk commodities. This project supports the use of longer trains, making rail operations even more efficient. A side benefit is, by accommodating longer trains, there will be less noise from having to break trains into smaller blocks of rail cars.

Perhaps the most exciting of the new additions to the park is the pedestrian walkway being built under the new rail bridge. The walkway will connect the trails in Harbourview Park to the rest of the Lynn Creek trail system, which means that for the first time, visitors will be able to walk along the entire length of Lynn Creek. That’s great news for dog walkers, joggers and anyone else who enjoys a stroll alongside the creek.

The Seafair Islanders swear they weren’t playing possum during the early stages of the 17th annual Tim Jardine Bantam Showcase. After somewhat sputtering out of the gate, the favoured Islanders cranked up their game when it mattered the most to capture the eight-team rep tournament hosted last week by the South Delta Minor Hockey Association. The Islanders had opened the tournament on Remembrance Day by tying Surrey 4-4 and dropping a 3-2 decision to the host South Delta Storm. In past years, that likely would have been enough to keep them out of the semi-finals — with only the top two teams from each roundrobin group advancing. However, this edition adapted a different format that saw all eight participants advance to a quarterfinal playoff round. Seafair blasted Mission 8-2 on Saturday then slipped past Langley, 5-4, in the semi-finals Sunday morning. The Richmond squad completed the run with an 8-2 romp over the same Surrey team it tied three days earlier. Islanders coach Russ Weber insists his team didn’t do anything differently in the medal round or take it for granted a playoff berth was guaranteed. “From our perspective, we approached
every game the same and didn’t perceive anything,” said Weber, who has now won this tournament three times after earlier guiding a pair of Richmond Minor teams. “This format maybe new to South Delta but it’s not new to tournaments. I think it’s more user friendly and does a better job of making sure the best two teams are in the final rather than being penalized for one bad game.” Despite a talented line-up that is considered a provincial contender, the Islanders are still working at establishing themselves as an elite A1 team. They went unbeaten in the second flight of Pacific Coast Amateur tiering play which earned them a promotion to flight one for the regular season. That will mean a steady diet of perennial powerhouses such as Burnaby and North Shore Winter Clubs. “There is still a lot of building and work in progress,” continued Weber. “When we get up by two or three goals, we play with a lot of confidence and we are a tough team to beat. We need to get more comfortable playing in those tight one goal games which we are going to see a lot of (in the top flight). These kids have had (so much earlier) success that they haven’t experienced much of that.” The Islanders will also get another significant test in tournament play at the Dallas Saunders International — Nov. 2528 in Abbotsford.

Ten field lacrosse players from Richmond have been selected to play for the Burnaby Mountain Selects (BMS) Elite Touring Teams. Entering the program’s eighth season; the Selects are widely recognized as one of Canada’s top field lacrosse development programs, combining excellence on the field with academic achievement. The program is overseen by Jeff Cathrea and Brent Hoskins, co-head coaches of the Simon Fraser University men’s lacrosse team.
