Man killed in fire identifided Homeless victims given 45 minutes to salvage belongings BY NELSON BENNETT

A 79-year-old man who died in a fire at Heather Lee Apartments on Aug. 7 has been identified. The B.C. Coroner’s office Tuesday identified the victim as Allan Orr. The cause of death is still under investigation, and so is the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, tenants left homeless in last week’s fatal apartment fire were given 45 minutes to salvage whatever they could on the weekend. But at least one tenant was told her apartment is unsafe and she fears she may never be allowed to recover her belongings. Elena Varniskaia and her 14-year-old daughter were among the tenants displaced when a fire tore through Heather Lee Apartments at 8540 Westminster Highway on Aug. 7. Vinarskaia’s first-floor apartment was in the area of the building that sustained the worst damage and has been deemed unsafe. She said the landlord has told her she may never be able to get in to her suite to retrieve her valuables. While that may be true, that doesn’t mean the landlord plans to keep all her belongings.

“If it’s salvageable, they can have that,” said a spokesman for Cressey, the company that owns apartments. Speaking on the condition his name not be used, the Cressey spokesman said there may be some miscommunication going on with tenants. “When there’s a way of getting in there — and that will require demolition crews, and people that are qualified at doing that — we’ll get in,” he said. A few days after the fire, Vinarskaia was given five minutes, escorted by a fire inspector, to retrieve her passport, income tax papers, budgie bird and a couple of laptops, but was told she could not take anything else, including the $400 her daughter had received for her birthday. She said the suite was not burned, although carpets were smoke-damaged. On Saturday, Richmond Fire Rescue handed the building back to Cressey, which allowed tenants from the least damaged portion of the building in to retrieve some of their belongings. Leon Rzhemovska, whose sister lived in the building, said the understanding was that Saturday may have been the only chance tenants had to recover their belongings. see Victims page 4

On Aug. 17, 2009, the Canada Line went into operation, three months ahead of schedule and — technically — on budget. One year later, daily ridership has hit the hoped-for 100,000-plus mark three years ahead of schedule, and the spike in crime it was feared to bring appears not to have happened yet. “There were those who said ridership would never hit 100,000,” says Richmond-Centre MLA Rob Howard. “It came in ahead of schedule and on budget, which I think is a testament to the P-3 structure.” While the system did come in on budget, that budget was increased from the original $1.7 to $2.1 billion. The 19-km long line connecting downtown Vancouver to Richmond Centre and the Vancouver International Airport was built by SNC-Lavalin and is operated under a 30-year concession agreement with Pro-Trans. Howard was a city councillor when the original RAV (Richmond-AirportVancouver) line was first proposed and became city

All other council members lobbied for an at-grade system, saying an elevated line would be ugly, would not fit in with No. 3 Road’s configuration, and would not allow for an eventual extension south. “I think it’s far better esthetically and technically than we had thought,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. Coun. Harold Steves

still thinks Richmond’s elevated line is unsightly, but believes that the city has done a good job redesigning No. 3 Road to fit it into the city centre. “I think it worked out really well,” he said. “It required a major shift in terms of our downtown planning. My biggest disappointment is that the line can’t be extended.” A total of $25 million was spent redesigning No. 3 Road to accommodate the Canada Line, with the city contributing about $10

million. One concern expressed about the Canada Line was the absence of parking for commuters in the south end of the line. Local shopping mall managers worried that commuters would simply park their cars in local mall parking lots. And they did, but not for long, says Leslie Matheson, marketing director for Richmond Centre. “It was a huge concern for us,” she said. “We had some tows at the beginning, but it’s down to nothing.

Word of mouth is a wonderful thing.” Matheson said there has been an eight per cent increase in customers coming to the mall since the Canada Line opened. In some respects, the Canada Line’s success has created problems for itself. Gary Cross believes the 30year concession agreement that TransLink signed with SNC-Lavalin and ProTrans is too restrictive. He said the system is already overcrowded at peak periods. “By September this year, it’s going to be packed with students,” he warns. He believes the YVR segment is running under capacity while the Richmond-Vancouver segment is well over capacity. TransLink officials are looking at rerouting buses that now stop at Brighouse and sending them to Bridgeport to take advantage of the fact that the trains double when the Richmond and YVR lines converge. “Next year we are adding some additional trains,” said TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis. Two new trains will be added in August of 2011.

A major concern over the Canada Line when it was being planned was crime. Richmond city councillors feared it would bring the kind of street crime that plagues the SkyTrain system. Branding the Canada Line the “Crime Train,” Richmond First lobbied for increased police presence, turnstiles and other crime prevention measures on the new transit system. Richmond First Coun. Bill McNulty said the jury is still out on whether the Canada Line has or hasn’t brought more crime here, although he believes it has brought more homeless people here. “It’s brought people into Richmond who otherwise wouldn’t have come,” McNulty said. “It’s brought people in from the down-

town in.” But Richmond RCMP and the Transit Police Service say there has been no major increase in crime attributable to the Canada Line. According to the Richmond RCMP, there has been a small increase in violent crimes in the No. 3 Road corridor since September 2009, and a slight decrease in property crimes. Cpl. Sherrdean Turley of the Richmond RCMP said most of the transit-related crimes since September 2009 happened on buses, not the Canada Line. According to Transit Police chief Ward Clapham, transit-related crime along the Canada Line appears to be low compared to the Expo Line. “Good planning has paid off,” he said. “Our partnerships worked so that it hasn’t become the Crime Line. “The current (rider) numbers exceed what many expected, so

that’s a clear demonstration to us that the public feels so safe and secure with riding on the Canada Line that they’re riding it in droves. The average weekday ridership has topped 104,000 per day.” Clapham said there were 70 crimes against persons (assaults, for example) on the Canada Line since it opened, Aug. 17, 2009, and 243 property crimes. That’s for the entire line, not just the Richmond segment. “That is extremely low,” Clapham said. By contrast, he said the Expo Line had 362 crimes against persons in the same period. Richmond MLA Rob Howard credits Clapham for getting out in front of transit related crime, while Clapham credits the Transit Police Services’ partners: Richmond RCMP, the City of Richmond, YVR, Vancouver police, TransLink and the River Rock Casino — where the

transit police station is based — for working together with Transit police on prevention. “Richmond city council deserves a lot of credit for being visionary enough to plan and act early,” Clapham said. The line was designed according to “target-hardening” principles, like making stations largely transparent to reduce areas for criminals to lurk. Clapham is the former superintendent for the Richmond RCMP. He went to the Transit Police Service with an intimate knowledge of Richmond and its concerns over transit-related crime. Transit Police, Richmond RCMP and TransLink struck what is called the STAR team (Station Target Area Response) to be “out in front of known or suspected problem areas” in or near stations. There are 49 Transit police officers who patrol the Canada Line.

Varniskaia was not so lucky. She had no insurance, so she had hoped she would be allowed back in to retrieve her $400 cash, and other valuables, like clothing and furniture. Varniskaia said she had nice furniture, including a leather couch and love seats, and a $2,000 bedroom suite that she bought six months ago. McGowen said it’s up to the landlord to decide what to do with tenants’ possessions. “They’re going to have to work that out with the owners of the building — the owners and the insurers of the building,” McGowen said. Vinarskaia called Cressey Monday and “begged” to be allowed to get her possessions. She said a spokesperson for the company told her that she may never be allowed into her apartment. “At the moment, if it’s an unsafe suite,

nobody’s allowed to get into it until we find a safe way of getting into it,” the landlord told the News. “Nobody’s trying to do anything but look after people’s safety at the moment. In addition to not being able to get her belongings back, Vinarskaia said she is also being nickled and dimed by various utilities. When she called Shaw to cancel her cable, she was told she owed them for a digital TV box and would be charged $140 for it. A Shaw spokesperson told the News that, in Vinarskaia’s case, the company will make an exception and exempt her from paying for the box, since she can’t retrieve it. Vinarskaia said she also has library books that she fears she will have to pay for, and she has to pay Canada Post $42 for a temporary rerouting of her mail, and another $42 when she finds a permanent place to stay. Meanwhile, Cressey gave assurances it will try to get tenants their possessions back as soon as it is safe to do so. “It’s just a timing issue,” the landlord said. “Nobody gets to keep someone else’s stuff. If it is possible for her to get her stuff, she will be able to get her stuff.”

He may have cycled more than 8,000 kilometres from one side of Canada to the other, but the journey for Richmond’s Sam Wade is not yet over. Wade — who along with three friends pedaled from Victoria to St. John’s in aid of prostate cancer — was last week relaxing at home after his team’s arduous 75day adventure from coast to coast. But since flying back to Vancouver on Aug. 6, the past few empty days have given psychology student Wade time to reflect on what to do next for the Pedalers for Prostate cause he set up in 2008 after his grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer. “It’s been a big project for sure; it’s been my life this last two years,” Wade said.

In the rearview mirrors I can see my rival speeding towards me. I step on the gas pedal, pushing it all the way to the floor, desperately trying to keep ahead. Until now, I’ve never really felt the need for speed. But as my odometer climbs, taking me past 200 km/h, I can’t help but feel a rush as the car behind me shrinks

into the distance. Before I get the chance to get too comfortable, the track winds quickly to the left. I slam on the brakes and grab the wheel even tighter, trying to turn. Physics defy me. He was part of something similar in Chile, leaving behind his “legacy” of 12 cockpits. A typical race costs $20, and includes a practice qualifying round in a Mini, before the official 10-lap race starts in a Formula One car. The experience can last half-hour, and is much cheaper (and safer) than finding a track of your own.

Six men sentenced for kidnapping BY NELSON BENNETT

Six men have been handed heavy jail terms for the kidnapping of a convicted drug lord who was held and tortured for 25 days in Richmond in 2006. Peter Li, who is serving a 13-year prison sentence for drug trafficking, was kidnapped in 2006 from his Burnaby home, along with his wife Jennifer Pan, and friend Xiao Cheng. The trio were taken to a house in Richmond and held for 25 days in an extortion attempt.

The home at 8320 Sunnycroft Rd. was then owned by a company — listed as “not in good standing” by the Ministry of Finance — called Karser Enterprises Ltd., whose owners were listed as Chang-Rong Chen, Li-Chun Chen, Hsi-Hai Chen and Hua-Chu Liu. The house has since changed hands. Li ended up arranging for $1.3 million to be paid to his kidnappers and was eventually released, but not until he had been beaten and Tasered by his captors. The money he paid was never recovered.

Six men were arrested and charged with kidnapping and extortion. Yat Fung Albert Tse, Nhan Trong Ly, Daniel Luis Soux, Myles Alexander Vandrick and Viet Bac Nguyen were found guilty in April of kidnapping, unlawful confinement and extortion. Huong Dac Doan was found not guilty of kidnapping but guilty of unlawful confinement and extortion. On Monday, they received sentences ranging from 10 to 18 years. Tse and Nguyen — who were the leaders in the kidnapping — were given the longest terms — 18 years.

Richmond residents taking in the Steveston Maritime Festival this weekend might come away with the impression that the commercial fishing industry is the stuff of museums — something long dead. Richmond families who still make a living fishing salmon would prefer we not close the coffin lid on them just yet. Local gillnetters were actually expecting to be on the water today (Wednesday) for a second commercial opening. The salmon fishing industry is in trouble, for sure, due to dramatically declining wild stocks. This year’s Fraser River sockeye returns hold some promise, with returns of 14 million predicted. That sounds like a lot, but when you see the photos and read the stories about the golden age of fishing in B.C., you can see how we have brought our various fisheries to the brink. There is hope, though, according to Alan Haig-Brown, author of Still Fishin, one of the Maritime Festival’s guest speakers (see page 16.) He believes a sustainable fishery is still possible. But we need to learn some lessons from the past. Visit the Georgia Cannery, look at the photos and displays, and you can’t help but be struck by how rapacious our forebears were. Perhaps they didn’t know better, but we do. After you’ve taken in the Maritime Festival, head down to the Steveston docks, and you might even be able to buy a fresh sockeye right off the boat. There is no irony here — today’s fishers are not mining the seas the way they once did. In fact, a sustainable (of course, that’s the key word) wild fishery may be one of the keys to preventing our wild stocks from becoming history.

The Editor, Re: “Woman 70 bruised by cops,” News, Aug. 6. This is in reply to Lori Smith and people who are fast to judge our police. Have any of you stood face-to-face with an inebriated or stoned person who is aggressive and/or violent? Have you had to creep around in the dark to find a prowler in some yard late at night? How about walking smack-dab into the middle of a domestic dispute or showing up at a fatal vehicle accident? People who sit on couches and judge our police force should try dealing with any of these situations rather than typing off silly knee-jerk comments. Granted these police officers are trained to deal with these and other situations, and seem to do so to the best of their abilities — but they are only human and a person screaming and spitting in your face still creates a tense situation. I’m not a police officer, and have never been arrested. I’m just a mother of two grown kids who has seen and read enough about these unstable situations to be very grateful to have our police force around. Think about it — when you are snug in your jammies and someone is trying to break into your car or house. Who do you call? And aren’t you damned glad they are around when a crabby drunk accosts you on the street? The way I see it is that they are the only thing between us and the unlawful and violent. I wouldn’t want the job — but am glad there are men and women who do, and who do want to help. And what do you mean by embarrass us — again?? The way I see it the only person embarrassed is you and people like you who are too quick to judge. Ann Scott Richmond

Canada Line celebrates one year

he Canada Line’s a year old – not only did that year fly by, but the line itself is now just an everyday part of Richmond’s suburban experience. I’m still riding the train five days a week to get from Richmond to Waterfront station, and for the most part, I’m still a fortunate rider who usually gets a seat. The line already holds some memories for me, most notably the Friday night during the Olympics when I rode the last train of the night home from downtown Vancouver. Someone was smoking something funny, and the entire trainload (and it was packed like sardines) engaged in a round of O Canada. By and large, I’m a big fan of the Canada Line, and hope to see more transit lines and options in the Lower Mainland. There have certainly been changes over the year, and the line seems to be constantly growing in popularity as more people discover its charms. In the past four months, weekday numbers show 104,000 people riding the train, a target the line didn’t expect to reach until 2013. When weekends are factored in, the average is 99,200, even in July when most college students are taking a break. That’s pretty fine for a line that’s just celebrating its first birthday, and that hasn’t even begun the massive development planned around its stations. I drive over to

Bridgeport station and park in the park-and-ride lot on most days, which means I can catch either train when I come home from work late at night. It also means I can usually catch a YVR train on my way to Waterfront, and all regular riders know the YVR trains are much emptier than the Richmond trains. At the park and ride, I now have to park on the top floor. When the line first opened, I could usually get a spot on the same level as the ramp to the trains; now, no way. Despite the fact the lot has already had a 25per-cent fee jump (from $2 to $2.50 thanks to the harmonized sales tax), its still a screaming deal compared to the $20 plus dollars a day to park downtown. More and more people are discovering the convenience of parking at Bridgeport and that, coupled with the fact the casino reserved an entire level of parking spots just before the Olympics, means the lot gets more crowded every day. Apparently there are no plans to build any additional parking spaces anywhere along the line because the hope is that people will take the bus or carpool to the stations.

Well, I don’t know if that’s going to happen unless there are a lot more buses scheduled, particularly in the evening. In Richmond, using the 410 Railway as an example, while it goes every 10 minutes during rush hour, it only goes about every 20 minutes after nine p.m., and then every thirty minutes. That’s a long time to wait when your bus ride is only four or five minutes, and you could drive the distance in five minutes. Next August, there are plans to add two additional trains to the route, increasing capacity by 12 per cent. That will leave two more spare trains before more need to be purchased. I hope the two additional trains will be routed to Brighouse, because certainly that leg of the journey appears to be the most crowded. If ridership continues to grow over the next year, those two trains are going to be a drop in the bucket of what’s needed to keep the line pleasant to ride on. Already at rush hours it’s standing room only, and being squeezed cheek to jowl with strangers is not the most pleasant experience. To my mind, the success of the Canada Line should lead TransLink to build more rapid transit lines, and to open other options (such as rail and ferry) onto the Vancouver commuting table. Weist responded to my letter regarding the SPCA importing animals to Richmond for adoption by providing a lecture on the work done by that organization. I find this strange in that my letter clearly indicated that I understand that the SPCA “does wonderful work” and my comments were in no way critical of anything other than the issue of importing animals. I, and many of my friends, have adopted from the SPCA in the past and have had good experiences in that regard. My only concern regarding the SPCA

TransLink not accountable closing, yet your board of directors can come out and demand that the monies be given to you otherwise you are going to cut services. The problem with your thinking is that to spend the $100 million would be ill spent and that you would rather let $5 million of fare revenue be lost, but yet hit up the taxpayers to make up any short fall that TransLink may have. Must be nice having your jobs, no stress and no one to answer to and when things don’t work out, go after the public coffers. For any business, there is always going to be an investment that one must make to ensure the viability of the business. For the $100 million you are speaking of, in 20 years the gates will have paid for themselves, the numbers I am using is based on the report from the Richmond News. I have no beef with the service you offer, just so long as it is viable and that you and your board is not out there demanding handouts from our governments. The problem with the people at the board is they don’t respect the people who work hard to earn their money, only to see these directors come out and demand even more. I think enough is enough. Either the system can pay for itself or get rid of the system and the people running it. Yet, we are hearing that your board is looking to expand the system. Make some money first and prove that

the service can sustain itself! If you need to, raise the fares to the point the business is viable, why should I or anyone who does not use the system be forced to anti up for what I would call gross incompetence. Why are we subsidizing the transit users? David Chan Richmond

The Editor, Re: “Fare gate sums don’t add up,” Letters, Aug. 11. Mr. Garnett, my question is this to you and the TransLink board, in the art of doing business, how many businesses could contine to do keep their doors open if they were bleeding like your company is? If TransLink wants to do us all a favuor, how about giving back the 500 per cent wage increase they voted themselves, because I can guarantee you one thing, working for any private company, you would have been fired long ago. Most companies that are bleeding will generally cut wages and any unnecessary expenses to try and keep the company going. Assuming your numbers are correct, that it is too expensive to justify purchasing the turnstiles, then perhaps it is time to look at shutting down the system completely. No system should be put in place that cannot run on its own merits, the problem with public officials is they are not accountable to the company’s bottom line. The board is not an elected body, yet you go around demanding the raising of property taxes, tolls on bridges, raise parking fees and on and on. Are we, the taxpayers, supposed to pay for total incompetence? In this day and age, the economy is weak, families are doing without, children are being robbed of their education, schools are

This is where a menu of categories is offered, and one picks items from one’s gardens to submit and be judged. So, for example, Gary Greenthumb may pick an exquisite rose from his garden and enter it in the rose category. Greta Greenthumb (his wife) may pick sweet peas and enter those in the annuals category. A professional judge is brought in and gives (usually) a very entertaining run through of the top entries and why some were not chosen. A Best In Show ribbon is awarded, along with a gift certificate to a local nursery. It usually happens four times a year, and is usually

a fun and educational part of our meeting. But, once a year we have a Members Only Parlour Show, and this to me is the most fun. Happening at the end of July, when it’s guaranteed to be blazing hot, we go out amongst our gardens and pick — the best fruit we have, the best veggies, the best perennials and annuals. We bring them, along with a pot luck offering, and instead of a professional judge — we do the judging. We sniff and snort the roses and sweet peas, ooh and aah at the vases of mixed annuals and perennials and be amazed at the large blueberries, the plump tomatoes and the gleaming garlic. After the judging is done we dine on a wide variety of pot luck offerings — fresh fruit, sushi, tiny sandwiches, sweets to delight and cold drinks to refresh.

Three years ago it was suggested that to fill in the time while the tallying is being done we have a silent auction with the proceeds going to the food bank. Everyone brought near to new items from home, ranging from garden implements to T-shirts to paintings to games and such. It has become as much of a tradition as the Parlour Show itself, and only added to an evening of fun. It is difficult to hold a meeting in the summer — people are away and other social opportunities call one to attend. Many groups do not meet in the summer for this reason, and the Garden Club itself does not meet in August. But, when we get together like this — in a far more informal evening (not that we can EVER be called formal!) with the results being a decent sized cheque for the food bank — it is well worth the time it takes to search out donations from one’s home. And as for the time it takes to search out those almost perfect flowers for the Parlour Show? Anytime in the garden is priceless.

Celebrate Richmond’s connection to the sea W

alking through the stilt house, circa mid-1800s, is like stepping back in time. One of four historic houses on the Britannia Heritage Shipyard site, which were originally constructed for local Japanese fishermen, was where John Murchison, Steveston’s first police chief and customs officer, made his home. “John moved into one of the smaller houses in 1895 when he was still a bachelor,” said Angela Soon, special projects coordinator at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. “When he got married, he moved into the house next door, which was bigger and had a kitchen.” The historic buildings at Britannia give a snapshot of what life was like for the early settlers in Steveston. This weekend, you can go back in time as the Britannia Heritage Shipyard hosts the 7th Annual Richmond Maritime Festival, from Friday to Sunday. “People can go through all the homes and all the historical buildings, which feature informative displays and interactive activities depicting life in the fishing village a century ago,” said Soon, who added that last year, more than 20,000 people attended the festivities over the three days. During the festival, attendees can also celebrate Richmond’s rich connections to the sea with a classic wooden boat show, tours of more than 20 boats, as well as a host of children’s maritime-themed activities, such as face painting, pirate hat making, pirate tattoos, knot tying, rope making, model boat building and net mending. Kids, young and old, will have an opportunity to row on the Juanita, a 18th century Spanish long boat replica made of red cedar. “People can also go aboard the rum runner, the M.V. Fleetwood, which used to smuggle alcohol to the United States during the prohibition (1930s),” said Soon, who points to the bullet hole in the side of the restored sleek, beautiful and fast seiner. “She was fast because she was equipped with aircraft engines. There were no seats in the Fleetwood because it was loaded with alcohol.” The story goes that there was a secret lighthouse in the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, which would light up when the Fleetwood was coming through.

Seventh Annual Maritime Festival is at Britannia Heritage Shipyard this weekend

Liam and his buddies in the Walk the Plank Gang will be on hand at the weekend-long Maritime Festival to relieve patrons of their bootie. On the dock will be a number of volunteer guides and many interpretive signs, so people can discover tales at sea about all the ships they view. “This is the only time all year that people will be allowed onto the shipyard docks and able to go aboard some of the boats,” Soon said. You’ll also find out that the last boat built in the shop was the Silver Ann, which was recently restored by shipwright Colin Duffield with a team of volunteers, said Soon. The Silver Ann is a 33-foot wooden gill-netter, who battled the elements for years, until her pumps failed, sinking her at the dock where she was moored. When she was pulled from her watery grave, she was mounted up in the shipyard and left for several years.

“In 2005, Colin and a crew started to restore her,” said Soon. Also, learn how the 1912 Hell’s Gate Landslide blocked the Fraser River, which caused a significant decline in the salmon stock. That resulted in many of the canneries shutting down or being converted to other uses. “In 1917, the Britannia Cannery became the shipyard and marine repair shop for the ABC Packing Company’s fleet of fishing boats,” said Soon. Another major feature of the weekend, adds Soon, is the Steveston Dragon Boat Festival, with races happening both Saturday and Sunday. There are more than 30 local teams who will paddle on the mighty Fraser. “They will begin at the Britannia dock and go to the No. 1 Road dock,” said Soon. On the Saturday night, there is a barbecue beginning at 5 p.m., with funds raised benefiting the Richmond Food Bank and the Steveston Museum’s Japanese Hospital project. Ron Bradley, owner of Richmond’s M & M Meats, is setting up a tent and selling smokies, hot dogs, veggie and beef burgers, with 100 per cent of proceeds going directly to the two charities, added Soon. Behind the Britannia Heritage Shipyard building, in the open fields, will be two tents with various nonprofit exhibitors showcasing what they do and offering numerous activities and boat and water safety tips — the Vancouver Aquarium, Vancouver Wooden Boat Society, RCMP and Transport Canada. “Port Metro Vancouver is hosting a cargo hockey game with the kids,” said Soon. “There will be lots of freebies handed out over the weekend.” Don’t miss the one-hour sea shanties workshops with Tom Lewis, who will teach the audience how to sing like a sailor. Other speakers include Alan HaigBrown author of Still Fishin’ and marine artist John Horton, who will give two talks about Captain George Vancouver charting Northwest North America and the centennial of the Canadian Navy. “The fishing industry is such a huge part of our history, so it’s good to remember what it used to be like and celebrate it,” added Soon. “Close to 100 volunteers help make this three-day celebration possible.” Throughout the day, every day, there will be live entertainment on the stage set up behind the shipyard. No fair is complete without food. So to that end, there will be ethnic cuisine from around the globe. The 7th Annual Richmond Maritime Festival runs Friday (noon to 5 p.m.) and and Saturday and Sunday (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard, 5180 Westwater Dr. Admission is free. Islanders second best in the west ... the 94B team won silver in the 2010 Western Canadian Bantam Girls softball championships, held here in Richmond at London Park. Coming off their second place finish in the Bantam B Girls provincial softball championships, Sam Young’s 94B Islanders had just one more goal to reach: medaling at the 2010 Western Canadian Bantam Girls softball championships, hosted by the Islanders last weekend at London Park. Young’s team finished their regular season with a 17-1-1 record, had top two finishes in four of six tournaments they entered including Gold at the Lower Mainland Championships. A top three finish in the Westerns would be their toughest task yet with a

field that included provincial gold medallists Abbotsford Outlaws, bronze medallists South Surrey Thunder, Alberta A teams Calgary Diamond Devils and the Edmonton Wildcats and two Saskatchewan A teams, the Saskatoon Phantoms and the Saskatoon Lasers. Nerves and errors plagued the Isles in the round robin opener as the Phantoms easily dispatched the locals 9-0. Two round robin wins and three more losses left the Richmond side at 2-4 and tied for the fourth and final playoff spot. A tiebreaker game would be needed and the Isles

faced Calgary. Despite it being their third game on a wet and miserable Saturday afternoon, the weather did not dampen the Isles spirit as they easily cruised to a 6-1 victory. Now into the final four, the Isles faced the Phantoms again, with the winner guaranteed at least a bronze and the loser eliminated. The rain began to let up, but the Isle bats didn’t as they pounded out 19 hits and scored eight times to upset the Saskatoon team 8-5 and advance to the semi-final. Sunday morning saw just three teams left, the undefeated Saskatoon Lasers

awaited the winner of the Islanders and the Abbotsford Outlaws. The Isles had not beaten the Outlaws in four previous games this season, including the heartbreaking 4-2 loss in the provincial final last month. But this time Richmond won, pulling off a 5-4 victory that sent them into the Championship final. The victory sparked a wild celebration on the field and amongst the standingroom only crowd at London Park. The final game would be the Islanders toughest of the year. The Saskatoon Lasers, coming off a silver medal in the Saskatchewan Bantam A provincials, were undefeated. Ultimately, the game ended in a 9-2 victory and gold for Saskatoon. Lacrosse star named player of year Richmond Lacrosse’s Jonathan Bailey has been named Pepsi Player of the Year for Zone 4. The award is presented to second-year Midget age players who: display strong lacrosse skills, have good academic grades in school and give back to Lacrosse whether it be helping to coach teams, referee, volunteering for the association at other levels. Commitment to the sport is high on Bailey’s list as well as giving back to the association. He helps out at tournaments and with teams whenever is

RCBA Girls Bantam to host AAA nationals Richmond City Baseball Association (RCBA) announced they have been chosen as hosts for the Canadian Girls Bantam AAA Championships from August 26 August 30, 2010. Seven teams, including Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C. and Richmond, will be playing in a round robin style tournament at Brighouse and Blundell fields.
