Richmond Conservative MP Alice Wong has never hidden the fact she considers herself an evangelical Christian. She is on a list of “MPs to help you pray” on the noapologies.ca website. And the Conservative MP admits she has attended functions sponsored by the Canadian Alliance for Social Justice and Family Values Association (CASJAFVA) — a Chinese-Canadian Christian organization that has lobbied against things like gay marriage. But she denies ever raising money for the organization, as suggested in a new book called the Armageddon Factor by Marci McDonald (Random House).
Wong never raised cash for lobbyists
“Now the Conservative Member of Parliament for Richmond, Wong had been an enthusiastic speaker and fundraiser for CASJAFVA, the right-wing advocacy group whose mostly Chinese membership had organized the largest protest against the Corren agreement,” McDonald writes, referring to the B.C. government’s controversial decision to allow Murray Corren, a gay man, help write the curriculum for a class called Social Justice 12. While CASJAFVA members may have raised money for Wong, the Richmond MP said she has never raised money for CASJAFVA. That was the other Alice Wong, she added.
“There was another Alice Wong who was helping them with fundraising — not me. I never raised funds with them,” she said. K-John Cheung, director for CASJAFVA, confirmed that an Alice Y. F. Wong has participated in fundraising for the organization in the past. CASJAFVA may be bestknown for its fight against the implementation of a Social Justice 12 high-school course designed to teach a variety of social justice issues. The organization, led by Vancouver lawyer K-John Cheung, collected 17,000 signatures opposing the course’s implementation. In her book, McDonald suggests the Christian right see Wong page 4

But young Ewan Mountford, 4, might have more reason than most to dig out one very special memento of his childhood years when he gets all grown up. For Ewan’s mom, Stacey, entered a cuter than cute picture of her son, all decked out in 2010 Olympic gear, into a Royal Canadian Mint’s national “Face of the Games” contest — and won. Now her little guy, who was aged three at the time of the winning photo, has 100 prized commemorative Olympic Games medallions with his face on one side and the Queen’s head on the other. “We were pretty ecstatic when we found out we’d won,” said Mountford, who lives in South Arm. “I reckon when he gets older, he might be pulling that coin out of his pocket to impress the ladies.”

ichmond archivist Bill Purver gingerly picks up the old photograph with white cotton gloves. He then rubs his pinky finger alongside one of the childrens’ faces ever so gently. “It’s a mystery, there are many variables in play here and when you don’t have all the information, it can be difficult to make an accurate assumption,” said Purver. Then, he shakes his head and frowns as he closely examines the photograph of four children, who appear to be siblings, sitting for a formal family portrait. “I’m still a little baffled because the children are wearing timeless styles which could date back anywhere from the late 1800s or as late as the forties,” said Purver. On closer examination, he again shakes his head in bewilderment. “It doesn’t appear as if a professional photographer took the image because of the quality of the paper, yet from the clothes and jewelry, the children seem to be from a wealthy family.” With his finger, Purver points to the warped edges, suggesting moisture damage, and to the differences in the sides of the photo, which he said came from someone cutting the image to fit a frame. “Cecile” (she wishes to remain anonymous for personal reasons), found the faded photograph in a frame she purchased in one of the second-hand stores in Steveston. It sat in a drawer, she said, for more than two years until one day, curios-

Richmond City Archivist Bill Purver considers the historical context of the photograph, left, found in a Steveston thrift shop. ity got the better of her. “For some reason, I couldn’t throw it out and then I started wondering about who these children could be,” Cecile said. “Unfortunately, I don’t remember which shop I bought the frame from.” That is regrettable, Purver said. “The frame can often help us date the picture, provided it was the original frame,” he said. “There is no way to guarantee where this picture comes from, it could be anywhere around the world, but there are assumptions we can make from the style of clothing and hairdos.” Purver is quick to add that he is far from an expert in dating photographs and he only appraises photographs for historical value rather than for monetary reasons. “I date photographs for historical significance,” he said. “There has to be a context of something or
evidence of something that gives them archival value.” In other words, he explains, the photo should provide some idea of location, or at least be one of a selection of family photographs, which can help pinpoint a time frame and location. “Then, a photograph becomes one of historical value to show what things looked like in a particular era,” Purver said. “As far as this photo is concerned, we have no history, no context in which to work with.” Purver went on to say that without the original frame and without the photographer’s signature on the back (something that was a common practice for studio portraits in the early 1900s) or other records, he can only give an educated guess to the age of the photograph. “My best guess from the markings, the moisture damage and the older girl’s hair style that perhaps it
could be circa 1910,” he said. “However, when looking at the youngest girl’s button shoes, they were popular from the 1910s to the 1940s.” But, Purver said, if he is dating purely from the photograph’s paper, his summation would then be somewhere between 1920s to 1930s. “Today, most photographs are on a resin base print but this paper is a fiber base print, which was known and used in the twenties and thirties.” In the end, said Purver, he can only speculate a time frame but one thing he knows for sure “they are handsome children.” If you are serious about identifying, dating or preserving your old photographs, call Purver at 604-247-8305 or email him at bpurver@richmond.ca and he can provide names of local professional conservators (they can conduct a technical examination
of the photograph, which can reveal clues about how, when, and where it was made). However, conservators don’t come cheap, said Purver. “Generally, a consultation can cost you $75 an hour and to clean or treat a photo can run you between $300 or $400,” he added. The Richmond Archives houses more than 125,000 photographs and residents can download from a digital library of roughly 10,000 images of Richmond dating back to 1862. Braeden Caley, former assistant to Raymond Chan, said the attendance of Liberals like Chan, Dosanjh and Peschisolido would have been around 2002 or 2003, before CASJAFVA began to show its true colours after the debate on same sex marriage heated up in Canada. “Since (2003), it would have made no sense for a Liberal to associate with a group that has taken such a hard turn to the right,” he said. “But Alice Wong has been, and Stephen Harper did a fundraising event for them when he was leader (of the Conservative Party). Caley added there is evidence that the Harper government’s policies do in fact reflect fundamentalist Christian values. He cites the Harper government’s attempts to repeal the legalization of same sex marriage in its first term is a good example. The Harper government’s refusal to include funding for abortions in international aid package for women’s health in developing nations is a more recent example. It’s not just Liberals who think the Conservative Party has been mixing too much religion into its politics. In 2005, Charlie Horton, the Richmond riding association president for the Conservative Party, resigned after another evangelical Christian, Darrel Reid, was nominated as the Conservative candidate here. At the time, Horton said he was uncomfortable with the Conservative Party favouring evangelical Christians like Wong and Reid.

Maybe it was a drunken prank or maybe it was last-ditch wish to avert an old sofa’s passage to the big living room in the sky? Whatever it was, at least two people were probably falling over themselves with laughter in the early hours of Friday morning after plunking a couch atop O’Hare’s Pub’s “Blarney Stone.” The pub’s eight-foot-high “Blarney Stone” — the real version of which in Ireland is best known for people kissing and making a wish — is often the setting for fun photographs. But bemused drivers, making their way to work on Friday morning, were rubbing their eyes and slowing down to check the new landmark near the Railway Avenue and Steveston Highway intersection. Grant Bryan, who runs the familyowned pub with wife, Errin, was on his way to work when he got a call around 8:30 a.m. about the modification to his landmark. “It wasn’t there when the last person locked up at 12:30 a.m., so it must have happened after that,” he said. “To be honest, it’s something I would’ve done as a student in Edinburgh. Despite their religious difference, these ethnic groups tend to share the Christian right’s views on things like same sex marriage. “That realization was not lost on Stephen Harper when he drafted his theo-conservative strategy, nor was it any accident that Harper kicked off his 2008 election campaign clad in a blue sweater, indulging in a round of baby kissing in the B.C. riding of a three-time candidate named Alice Wong,” McDonald writes in her book. Wong said she takes exception to the suggestion in McDonald’s book that the Harper Conservatives want to see Christian values forming government policy, to the exclusion of non-believers. “If that’s the camp she’s putting me in, or the Conservative Party, then I categorically deny her assertion,” Wong said. “I would identify myself as an evangelical Christian in my religious beliefs, but I will never ever advocate for a Canada in which ‘non-believers have no place.’ “My very role as the Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism, I endorse the right of all cultures and religions to peacefully coexist here in Canada.” Wong added that she wonders why her attendance at CASJAFVA events means she is a religious bigot, but that other politicians aren’t. “I have attended those events sponsored by that organization,” she said, “but so have other politicians from all political stripes.” She said Ujjal Dosanjh (Liberal MP for Vancouver South), Sam Sullivan (former Vancouver mayor), Raymond Chan (for-

Richmond biologist quits amid crisis Nearly a decade ago, Otto Langer quit the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in frustration over what he felt was a lax approach to fish habitat protection. Now the Richmond biologist is resigning from a Marine Stewardship Council stakeholder panel over its certification of Fraser River sockeye. The certification was announced Friday — the day Langer started drafting his letter of resignation from the stakeholder council he has sat on for nearly a decade. “I’ve been on it long enough, and I feel a lot of my comments over the years have been ignored, and I think the last straw is the certification of the Fraser River sockeye,” Langer told the News. The MSC stamp of approval tells consumers that the fishery is managed sustainably —something many commercial fishermen and environmentalists here believe is contradicted by the current crisis facing Fraser River sockeye. “If you can’t have a fishery because there’s no fish, how can it be a sustainable fishery? It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever,” Langer said.
Otto Langer resigns over sockeye salmon certification Langer said the MSC was founded in England in response to the failure of governments around the world to do a proper job of protecting fish. The idea was to empower consumers by letting them know which seafood was sustainable and which wasn’t. And for the most part, Langer said the MSC has done some good work. He agrees with other recent certifications of B.C. sablefish, for example, and Nass and Skeena River sockeye. But he draws the line at Fraser River sockeye, which are so depressed that the commercial fishery has been closed for the last three years. Kerry Coughlin, MSC’s regional director for the Americas, says the fact the Fraser River sockeye fishery has been closed to commercial harvesting indicates it is being managed prudently. “It’s an appropriate management response,” she said. Commercial fishermen here may be happy to know that the MSC concluded that the current crisis is not the result of over-fishing. “It’s something at sea,” Coughlin said. She said the MSC’s certification can benefit the fish-
ery because it comes with 17 conditions attached. For example, the MSC requires DFO to implement a recovery plan for Cultus Lake sockeye. Annual audits must be conducted and if the 17 conditions are not met, it could result in MSC certification being revoked, although Coughlin said that has never happened before. None of the 17 conditions address issues related to fish farming, which has been blamed by environmentalists for their impact on wild salmon stocks. One of the problems with the certification of the Fraser River sockeye is that the application for certification was made nine years ago. Since then, a veritable crisis has occurred. “If you start a certification exercise, you better begin it and end it within a couple of years, or the whole world can change, and that’s
what’s happened,” Langer said. “Rest assured that the assessment of the fishery was not based on something from nine years ago, and nothing else above that,” Coughlin said. “Nobody has issues with the currency of data, to my knowledge.” Starting this fall, hearings for the Cohen Commission of Inquiry into the decline of Fraser River sockeye begin. Langer wonders if the MSC certification will undermine the inquiry. He also fears it will send a mixed message to consumers. “When they predict 11 million fish and 10 per cent turn up, and then we announce a very expensive, two-year long inquiry, and then in the midst of all this, suddenly Fraser River sockeye are determined to be a sustainable fishery, this must leave Commissioner Cohen really out in the cold,” Langer said.

Richmond is getting its third and final cash injection from traffic fines. Public safety and important municipal services in the city will likely benefit from the $892,549 in provincial funding, part of a $38.6 million instalment from the government’s Strategic Community Investment Fund. At the same time last year the province dished out $2.5 million to Richmond, mostly from traffic fines collected from around B.C. That figure was the first of three instalments, gradually decreasing to last week’s funding announcement. “Improving public safety is a priority for all levels of government,” said Richmond East MLA Linda Reid. “This investment will

Traffic fine cash boosts public safety allow the City of Richmond to put dollars where they’re most needed.” This year’s funding will be used for new police equipment such as imaging cameras, identification equipment and police vehicles, and a variety of community safety and crime prevention initiatives. The Strategic Community Investment Fund is a restructuring of provincial grants, consisting of the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program and Small Community and Regional District Grants. The payment of $38.6 million to B.C.’s communities is the third instalment of a total $227 million provided to local governments since 2009; a first instalment of $133 million was paid to communities in March 2009 and a second instalment of $55.5 million was paid in September 2009.

A touching memorial service was held on the weekend for Sergei Traschenko — one of Richmond’s finest artists. Mourners gathered at the Richmond Cultural Centre on Saturday to pay their respects to Traschenko and to watch a special slide show that was put together to celebrate the artist’s life and work. Traschenko, who last summer sculpted a lifesize bronze replica of the English champion racehorse Minoru, died, aged 46, from a heart attack while on vacation in the Bahamas. The unveiling of the statue at the Minoru Plaza coincided with the 100th anniversary of former Minoru Racetrack opening. Such was Traschenko’s dedication to the Minoru statue, he travelled extensively around England’s

When Stephen Harper kicked off his campaign in the last federal election, he did it in Richmond. Standing next to him was Conservative candidate Alice Wong. According to Marci McDonald, author of the book the Armageddon Factor, it was a move aimed at courting the socially conservative Chinese community here. It may have worked here — Wong was elected — but not Canada-wide, because Harper failed to get a majority government. It’s a good thing he didn’t, warns McDonald, because it may be the only thing holding him back from imposing Christian nationalism on Canadians. McDonald’s book has been criticized for being conspiratorial and paranoid. We’ve heard these warnings before. Remember Preston Manning, that right-wing bigot who was bent on undoing a century of progress in human rights? Turns out he wasn’t quite the theocrat he was made out to be. And frankly, we have not seen much evidence that Alice Wong is pushing any kind of evangelical Christian agenda in Ottawa. Then again, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives don’t have a majority. McDonald warns us that Harper has a hidden agenda — that if given the chance, he would impose Christian morality on us all. We doubt Canadians would stand for that. Evangelical Christians represent a minority in this country. They don’t even have the support of other Christians. Ironically, they might have the support of some non-Christians in Canada’s growing ethnic communities, including Sikhs and Muslims. Talk about strange bedfellows. While some immigrants and refugees may share the Christian Right’s socially conservative views on things like homosexuality and abortion, many also came here to escape persecution, religious or otherwise. Presumably, they know all about the dangers of mixing religion with politics.

Racist graffiti insults us all
The Editor, Re: “Youth charged in graffiti case,” News, July 28. The twisted and racist rant that was left on an Asian strip mall is an insult to the community as a whole. It is offensive to think that in this day and age, overt displays of racism still exist at all, let alone in such a multicultural and diverse province such as British Columbia. In cities all over B.C., ethnic minorities and diverse multicultural groups live in harmony as neighbours and friends; the racist remarks that were left on a high traffic area in Richmond are deplorable and the culprits should be aware that this type of behaviour is unacceptable. This incident is a reminder that racism still exists and our communities need to collectively condemn racist acts. Racist sentiments by one group or an individual does not echo the sentiments of an entire community, and this is important to keep in mind. Whether it is the racist graffiti left on a strip mall in Richmond, or the racially motivated assault of Jay Phillips, an injury to one community is an injury to all. In the words for Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was neither, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the Jews, but I was not a Jew so I did not speak out. Trapped in an age of false plenty In the 1920s, in southern US states like California and Florida, it wasn’t uncommon to see solar water heaters on the roofs of homes. Not that there were a lot of people eager to be green back then, it was simply an inexpensive way to heat water. Then natural gas wells were drilled, and pipes were laid, and new homes were built with the pipes running right up into the hot water heaters. And the rooftop water heaters vanished. Why? Because natural gas was cheaper? Of course not. How could anything you pay for be cheaper than free sunlight? But natural gas was more efficient, and it didn’t require home builders to put up the rooftop heaters, and roofs probably looked a bit prettier without pipes running across them. Finally, gas is cheap. Or it was. Someday, the gas will run out. There’s a finite amount of natural gas buried in the ground. Ditto for oil. Whether we’re near or far from peak oil (or whether we passed it a few years back), every drop of hydrocarbons sucked from the ground is one less we’ll have in the future. Almost everything we use is made from nonrenewable resources, or from resources that are being exploited faster than they can naturally replenish.

When we eat more tuna year after year, when we cut down more trees than are planted, when we mine minerals and then bury them again in landfills, we’re cheating our future. We’re writing bad cheques for the whole economy. I’ve started thinking of this as false abundance. Our car culture is the best example of it. Not only do we run our cars on petroleum, but significant parts of our autos, from tires to interiors, are made of oil, and we drive on roads paved with tar. If we had no access to non-renewable resources like oil, would cars have ever taken off? Would we have eight-lane highways, Detroit and Windsor, the Saudi dynasty? This false abundance even extends to things that we think of as being environmentally friendly. My bike is made with rubber tires, plastic tubes, and an aluminum frame. Do you know how much electricity it takes to smelt aluminum? How much more would I have to pay for my bike if all the power and components had come from renewable sources? Look around at your own life, and ask yourself how much your posses-
sions and lifestyle would cost if you couldn’t deplete the natural world any faster than it could be restored. If we tried to switch straight to that system, our entire society would crash and burn in short order. But aside from the mealymouthed international declarations that we should cut our carbon usage, governments are doing nothing to move us towards the more stable world. Make no mistake, if we don’t wean ourselves off non-renewables, we will run out and be unprepared. Remember the parable about the ant and the grasshopper? How about six to eight billion grasshoppers, and no ants to mooch off? That’s where we’re heading sometime in the next few years. We can delay it, but only a complete about face will prevent it. It’s ironic that here in Canada, the party that tries hardest to suck up to the oil industry, the Conservatives, is also the party that is supposedly the most fiscally conservative. Every time we burn off a tank of gas, we’re contributing to a future deficit. We don’t know the final price tag. We don’t know when the bill will come due. But we know it’s coming. The Editor, Re: “Public transit fare evasion figures revealed,” News, July 28. Coun. Bill McNulty and several councillors are riding in like heroes to save the day by pressuring TransLink to install turnstiles. I think a child from Grade 6 could tell you that any business that offers a service must have a way of guaranteeing payment for said services. To think that Premier Gordon Campbell justified TransLink’s board of directors a 500 per cent increase in pay because they exemplified top management. If that is what you call top management, then I believe there is a misunderstanding of the most basic of business philosophy. The TransLink board keeps asking for more money either through increased land tax, parking meters and so on. It is time for us to tell them to get their business running like a true business before they come running for more money. It seems we are paying for their gross
incompetence. Every politician involved in the planning of the TransLink should be fired, sued and forced to pay damages to the tax payers. I am sick and tired of the mismanagement of tax payer dollars and then to have the TransLink board threaten the cutting of services due to lack of funds. I don’t mind subsidizing the transit system, provided that the system is collecting its fares from the users of the system. But to subsidize the system due to stupidity of the board is beyond my comprehension and a total waste of our hardearned money. Then again, is that not what government is all about these days? Take good care of the big boys and damn the majority of the people. It is time for us to make these politicians listen to us by forcing changes in the rules for governing, before one day we wake up and find our pay cheques have disappeared. David Chan Richmond

An hour’s too long for leg break ambulances on duty in Richmond that day, and they were all at Richmond Hospital. Until one became available, or they could re-route one from somewhere else, my mother would just have to wait. One hour after the first call to 911, an ambulance finally showed up. I have nothing but praise for the crew that did attend and the staff at the hospital who later treated my mother. While I understand other serious emergencies taking precedence, it cannot possibly be acceptable for a 72-year-old woman to lie on her kitchen floor for an hour, in excruciating pain, with absolutely no-one to help or comfort her, except my 75-yearold father. The Editor, Re: “Thanks to our true pros,” Letters, July 28. I am exceptionally glad that Marie Murtagh and Ben Gnyp had “wonderful emergency service” as outlined in their letter. I, however, would like to share the opposite side of the story with our emergency services experience. On July 21, my mother fell in her kitchen and broke her leg just below her hip joint. My father immediately called 911 as it was obvious that something was seriously wrong as the injury was clearly visible. Twenty minutes later, after he first contacted 911, my father received a return call from the dispatcher wanting to know how serious an emergency it was. He explained that his wife was lying on the kitchen floor, literally screaming and sobbing in pain. He was then told by the dispatcher that there were “very few”

Traumatized kids need reassurance, not pity Danielle Aldcorn FAMILY FUNCT ION
When I was a student I worked at a therapeutic facility for preschool age children who had emotional, social, developmental, or behavioural issues. Some of the children had also experienced a trauma. People sometimes find it difficult to imagine how a three-year-old child could already need therapeutic services, but trauma can happen to anyone and it can come in many shapes and forms. There are fairly common things that can cause traumatic responses in a young child, like parents fighting, illness or death in the family, accidents, extreme poverty, parental abduction, abuse and neglect. There are also less common things that can cause traumatic responses, such as: a house fire where the father dies trying to save the children; a drug addicted mother that overdoses in front of the kids; a mentally ill father that drives the minivan full of kids into his ex-wife’s house; a member of organized crime that gets shot down, execution style, in front of his kids. For pretty much anything that you have seen on the news, you can assume that a young child was affected by it. Three-year-olds aren’t particularly verbal, so some people assume that the child is not aware of what is going on. It’s true that they don’t experience it quite the way that an adult would, but that doesn’t mean that it is not impacting them. Typically, the trauma is expressed through the young child’s behaviour and play instead of through words. For example, a quiet girl who witnessed her step-dad beat up her teenage brother might make her Barbies argue in whispered voices and then smack the Barbies together or drop the dad Barbie out the window of the playhouse. A rambunctious boy who witnessed his father being killed by militia before they came to Canada may make the army men battle in the sandbox and make the people all cry before he buries everything under the sand. The great thing about little kids is that they will play that way for a while then
one day they’ll just stop and move on, because they heal faster than adults do. Of course, it is unfortunate and sometimes disturbing to know that small children have such big problems to deal with so we find ourselves wanting to help them. There are a few mistakes that we adults need to avoid making in our attempts to help a traumatized child. The first caution is that, feeling sorry for a child only makes it worse. Showing pity towards a child because of his or her difficult past
circumstances is actually discouraging because it assumes that they are a weak and helpless victim. Try instead to see the child as resilient and admire his or her strength and perseverance. If you believe that the child is strong enough to handle the trauma of the situation, the child will also believe that he or she is strong enough to handle it. Support them and give them coping skills but don’t fall into the anxious trap of trying to shelter and protect them from every other hard-
ship just because they have already had more than their fair share of bad breaks. The second caution is that, children don’t always express feelings appropriately, so don’t get too caught up with the behaviour and forget to hear the underlying message. I remember a three-year old-boy who was so mad because his mom hadn’t showed up for a scheduled visitation after she had promised him that she would be there. He tried to kick one of the therapists. He swore
in his tear-filled baby voice then put up his tiny middle finger at her. The therapist said, “I can tell that you are mad and sad and I’m so sorry that your mom promised that she would be here then didn’t show up.” He cried and gave the therapist a big hug. Of course it is not appropriate for children to express their emotions with fowl expletives and flipping the bird. But there is the right moment to teach appropriate behaviour, and there is a right moment to just validate
how they are feeling. Our job as adults is to know which moment is which. Obviously, some traumatic responses need to be addressed with the help of a professional, especially if the parent is also experiencing their own traumatic response to the situation. on Irving has penned songs for Canadian superstars Anne Murray, Michael Buble and Lisa Brokop, but it’s now his time in the limelight. After years of writing ballads for singers around the globe, Irving is back on stage. Irving and his band are coming to Richmond this Friday for Cherelle Jardine’s Musical Expressions Summer Concert Series. Although the veteran singer/ songwriter/producer admits his success as a songwriter has been immensely gratifying, there was always something missing. “I really loved performing in front of a live audience and I really missed it, so a few years ago I decided to get back at it,” said the 57-year-old seasoned artist from his home in South Surrey. “I’m still writing but now it’s often collaborating with other songwriters.” Over the years, he did manage to record two of his own CD’s — Into the Blue and You’re Not Alone — but wasn’t getting the chance to really promote them. “There is no point in having 500 of my CD’s sitting in my basement if people can’t hear my music,” he quipped. Today, he’s performing at small, intimate venues across the Lower Mainland, as well as musical festivals. It suits him just fine. Years ago, Irving said his only choice of venues were mostly smoky, loud bars where music played second fiddle to patrons’ alcohol consumption. “Today, I can sing in coffee houses, book stores and venues such as the Britannia Heritage Shipyard where people are there for the music,” Irving said. week. But the country bug bit him soon afterwards. “I fell for country music because the lyrics are always about real people and real situations … things audiences relate to,” said Irving. “Country has a message, although some songs are good times, honky tonk style.” He spent a lot of time in the home of country, Nashville, where he performed with Canadians luminaries such as Randy Backman, Marc Jordan, Shirley Eckhard and Eddie Schwartz. Irving hit the big times when Anne Murray decided to record
his song, Bluebird in 1990. That song became not only a hit for Murray, it also opened many doors for Irving. “I wrote it as a simple melody, a love song for my wife,” he said. “My wife and I met Anne Murray in Toronto during the 1990 Canadian Country Awards when Bluebird won Song of the Year.” “It has since been recorded in German and French.” Today, he’s all over the musical map — writing pop, country, new country, blues and World Beat. “I love writing positive inspirational songs,” he added. Valley seeing plenty of Stars as an NHL goaltender coach

Mike Valley is employed by an NHL team yet not in the way he envisioned while growing up in the Lower Mainland. The one-time standout goaltender is no longer stopping pucks but rather showing others how to do it. The 33-year-old recently signed a three-year contract extension as the Dallas Stars goaltender coach. The agreement comes on the heels of the Stars hiring Valley last summer and is the pinnacle point of a newfound career that has soared since he wound down his playing days in Europe. “It’s happened way faster than I ever imagined, it’s almost surreal,” said Valley who is town this week wrapping up his Elite Goalies’ High Performance Camp at the Richmond Ice Centre. “If I can’t be playing in the NHL then this is definitely the next best thing.” Valley helped the South Delta Bantam AAA team win a provincial championship in the early 1990s before moving onto the B.C. Hockey League. His play in Chilliwack earned him a guaranteed full-ride scholarship with the University of Wisconsin Badgers. Valley played two seasons of college hockey before leaving to pursue his NHL dream. After a tryout with the Vancouver Canucks, his career continued for six more years playing minor pro and in Europe. Little did he realize the experience and knowl-
edge he gained at every level would later make him a hot commodity. He returned to Wisconsin to complete his degree and settled in the Madison area with his wife and young family. That’s where his coaching career also began, working with young goalies at first. Soon after, he had Brian Elliott — a former All-American at Wisconsin and current starter for the Ottawa Senators — showing up at the Madison Ice Arena for sessions. Through word of mouth, his list of clients continued to grow and included Minnesota Wild all-star Nicklas Backstrom, along with Al Montoya (Phoenix), Jordan Pearce (Detroit) and Jack Campbell who backstopped the United States to the gold medal at the World Junior Championships. The Nashville Predators had heard enough about Valley’s reputation to offer him a part-time position for the 2008-09 season. Then last summer, Marty Turco dialed him up. “I jumped at the opportunity to work with someone like him,” said Valley. “I didn’t think anything of it at the time but Marty put in a good word for me.” That was enough for Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk to offer him a one-year contract, despite already having former NHLer Andy Moog among the team’s assistants. The agreement allowed for Valley to remain in Madison but it meant spending upwards of 24 days each month on the road, flying to Dallas as well as the Stars’ minor
Sockeyes add local talent with main camp looming
There will be no shortage of homegrown talent when the Richmond Sockeyes open their main training camp in less than two weeks. The Pacific International Junior Hockey Club recently announced the signings of three players, including Richmond Minor grads Turner Popoff and Rudi Thorsteinson. Popoff played on the blueline for the Major Midget Greater Vancouver Canadians last season, while Thorsteinson was a key offensive contributor for Richmond’s top Midget team. Another Canadians player — goalie Devin Nijjer —was also inked. The Sockeyes will have nine local products on the ice when camp begins Aug. 16.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a B.C. boy – born and raised in Richmond. I began playing football while attending high school at Vancouver College and continued to develop my skills during my university career at Simon Fraser. I have been a fan of the Black and Orange all my life and distinctly remember attending Lions games at BC Place in the 1980s. My brother Mark was briefly a Lion in 1990 – so football genes definitely run in my family! After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day and play the game I love, and I’m more determined than ever to bring the Grey Cup home to B.C. at least one more time during my career. As one of the longest-serving veterans on the team and the guy anchoring the offensive line in the centre position, I take a leadership role in the locker room and am sometimes looked to for advice by the younger players. Our team — and the O-line in particular — is like a family to me and I’m proud of my contributions in the locker room and on the field. As the second-youngest of six kids in my family, I looked up to my older siblings when I was growing up for inspiration and guidance. For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the club’s Lions in the House initiative. It makes me feel proud to know that I could have a positive influence on a young person who is at a very important time in their life. As much as I love playing professional football, I believe it’s also important to give back to the community you grew up in and set a good example for the next generation. Angus Reid in action.
